Held just one month after the Woodstock festival in 1969, the Big Sur Folk Festival featured standard bearers like Joan Baez while inviting new kids on the block like Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Baird Bryant and Johanna Demetrakas’s film was released in 1971, a year after Michael Wadleigh’s historic Woodstock. Sadly more idiosyncratic acts like The Flying Burrito Brothers and The Incredible String Band were left on the cutting room floor but Celebration at Big Sur still has plenty to celebrate.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings you the Oscars (yep, that's why they're called Academy Awards), and on Friday, the organization announced that it was prepared to invite 176 new folks to its fold.
In a list posted on its website, the Academy deemed Matthew McConaughey, Jean Dujardin, Terrence Malick, Jonah Hill, Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer and a host of other film luminaries worthy of inclusion in its nearly 6,000-member army.
The Academy has drawn the ire of critics who bemoan its overwhelmingly male, white population. A Los Angeles Times investigation found that of all Academy members, 94 percent are Caucasian and 77 percent are male. A mere 2 percent are black, with Latinos constituting an even smaller portion. Only 14 percent of members are under the age of 50.
Full members of the Academy select and vote on Oscars nominees. The organization was started in 1927 and is now governed by a 43-person board.

Bangkok — Religion can be a tough sell nowadays, so instead of waiting for disciples to make their way to temple, some promoters brought 36 films with Buddhist themes to the heart of modern Thailand earlier this month.
The International Buddhism Film Festival was an effort by the government and private religious groups to popularize Buddhism among the younger generations.
"It's like prescribing medicine to children, you have to add a little sweetener there," said Somchai Seanglai, the permanent secretary of Thailand's Culture Ministry. "City dwellers or our young people are not used to the traditional way of practicing Buddhism, so we insert Buddhist dharma into art and culture that people love to consume." Dharma refers to the Buddha's teachings on the meaning of existence.
Initiated by the California-based Buddhism Film Foundation, the movie festival came to Bangkok for the first time this year since its debut in Los Angeles in 2003, and pulled in 3,700 visitors.

Title: Crazy Wisdom Director: Johanna Demetrakas “Crazy Wisdom” focuses on a subject perhaps worthy of a documentary, but hopelessly obscured by fawning and myopia. Director Johanna Demetrakas sets her sights on Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a brilliant Tibetan monk who on foot escaped the 1959 Communist invasion of his homeland in quite unlikely fashion, studied and taught at Oxford University, and then shattered Westerner’s preconceptions of Buddhist enlightenment, renouncing his monastic vows, bedding students, drinking alcohol and eventually eloping with the 16-year-old daughter of an aristocrat. Known in many circles as “the bad boy of Buddhism,” Trungpa was at the forefront of a movement that saw Eastern faith, religion, healing and consciousness...

Are we living in a time when wisdom has faded?
Recognizing that the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism would be lost if not transferred to the West, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche headed from Tibet to the United States, where he met with the thinkers of other nations and meditated through the teaching of others on the notion of enlightenment. The founder of the Naropa University and Shambhala Centers for meditation across the country, Trungpa lived in open counterpoint to many of society’s mores relating to fidelity while teaching an unconventional position contrary to the Western struggle for material and militaristic gains.
While his teachings might have presented a loud wake-up call to many who lived in his presence, this movie is more of...
