The big day has finally arrived for Fantastico Studio and Cannibal Tales, as Episode 1 of the horror visual novel is now available on Steam. As mentioned on the Cannibal Tales Steam page, Episode 1 is only the “beginning of a larger journey” for the team, as two episodes are set for release in 2025, culminating in a 3D Survival Horror game in 2026.
The release of Episode 1 coincides with the birthday of Cannibal Holocaust director Ruggero Deodato, who also penned the script for Cannibal Tales. “We’re deeply sorry we couldn’t share this moment with the master Ruggero Deodato, but we believe releasing the game on his birthday is a fitting tribute to him.”
In addition to working on the additional episodes, Fantastico Studio is in the process of bringing Cannibal Tales to the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, as well as localization into other languages.

If the most terrifying horror monsters are the ones that most reflect real-life terror, then cinematic cannibals might be the most terrifying monsters of all. Unlike vampires, werewolves, or ghosts, cannibals on film are fully flesh-and-blood humans — just with a taste for the flesh and blood of other humans. The garishness of the act makes cannibalism a perfect subject for shock horror, and the cannibal film fully came alive in the ’70s and ’80s via low-budget splatter triumphs like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Cannibal Holocaust,” which pitted their protagonists against horrific waves of flesh eaters.
In recent years, cannibalism has had a bit of a “moment” — on film, at least. As The New York Times pointed out in 2022, a wave of movies, TV shows, and books exploring cannibalism has emerged in popular culture, from “Yellowjackets” to “Bones and All” to “Fresh.” Many of these projects use the practice as...

While it’s not the March release that Fantastico Studio was hoping for with Episode 1 of Cannibal Tales, those looking to sink their teeth into the game will be able to do so next month! The developer has announced that Episode 1 will be released on May 7 on Steam.
And no, it’s no coincidence that the game is being released on the birthday of the late Cannibal Holocaust director (and writer for Cannibal Tales) Ruggero Deodato. The team explains in the update that the date was chosen “in celebration and tribute” of Deodato, who would be turning 85 next month.
Fantastico Studio also revealed that there is a console release in the works for Cannibal Tales “this summer”. The overall plan for the game is for the second episode to be released in Winter 2024, and will “conclude beautifully” with the third episode, which will be a “3D survival horror adventure that...

When it comes to psychological horror films, few have achieved the chilling impact and critical acclaim of Anthony Hopkins‘ The Silence of the Lambs. With its gripping narrative and spine-tingling atmosphere, the film has rightfully earned its place among the greatest in cinematic history, earning five Oscars and widespread acclaim.

Yet, amidst the crowd of horror classics, there exists a film that goes beyond mere scares, into the realm of controversy and legal turmoil that few filmmakers dare to tread. Released in 1980, Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust seemed too realistic and authentic when it came to the gory scenes that the filmmaker would end up being arrested and charged with murder.

The plot of director Dean Parisot's cult-favorite 1999 sci-fi comedy "Galaxy Quest" hinges on a race of extraterrestrials, the Thermians, believing that an '80s space adventure series is a collection of "historical documents" of real-life events. When one of the show's actors, Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver), tries to explain to them that many TV series are purely fictional, she adds (with more than a hint of exasperation), "Surely, you don't think 'Gilligan's Island' is a ..." before trailing off as she watches the Thermians' faces drop in heartfelt despair. "Those poor people," their leader, Mathesar (Enrico Colantoni), somberly replies.

Not only that, but the team is once again confirming the goal to release Cannibal Tales “for the end of February.”
“We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve completed the implementation of all the game scenes,” reads the statement. “Currently, we’re focusing on refining the settings and saving features. Our goal is to wrap up development by January.”

In our jaded present, it’s hard to imagine that there was once a time when film audiences took the “based on a true story” claim seriously. At this point, we’re all fully aware that artists sometimes have to embellish the truth in order to prove a point – and sometimes simply to entertain. In fact, the very act of creating a faux-reality to tell a story has since evolved into an artform in and of itself. While Ruggero Deodato is often credited with having invented Found Footage with 1980’s Cannibal Holocaust, the truth is that the genre and its current off-shoots have been slowly creeping into existence since the early days of cinema.

Developer Fantastico Studio has finalized their plans for the upcoming closed beta for Cannibal Tales, announcing that the beta will kick off on October 31. The team also dropped a bit more info on the beta, as well as revealed a new art piece involving the game’s antagonist.
The closed beta (which you can sign up for via the Cannibal Tales official site) will take place from October 31, and last until November 7th. This will be different from the public demo that was available this summer, and will give players access to the first two chapters of the game, totaling around 30 minutes of gameplay. Upon completing the demo, there will be a survey asking for player feedback.
This all ties into Fantastico’s aim to have the game out in February 2024. According to the announcement, development is in the “home stretch”, with the final two scenes, save functionality, options, and localization remaining.

The horror genre and its directors may have endured the most clashes with the Motion Picture Association and the world's other regulatory boards, but Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, Ruggero Deodato, and a dozen other horror filmmakers are not the only ones. Numerous directors across action, drama, and even comedy have adjusted their content for release, and often at the perilous threshold between R and Nc-17.
This distinction is particularly important because some theater chains refuse to show Nc-17-certified films and several media outlets even refuse to run ads (via NPR). It's an odd streak of puritanism not found in other markets, such as the United Kingdom, where the equivalent "18" rating carries no such stigma.
R ratings can be very lucrative, but only one example — the disturbing, incendiary "Joker" — has ever made over $1 billion, which places it toward the bottom of the top 50 highest-grossing films — a space dominated by...

Fantastico Studio has dropped another progress update for their Cannibal Tales visual novel, which is aiming to have a beta release this Halloween. In addition to adding three new scenes to the beta, the update delves into the characters that are part of Ruggero Deodato-scripted game.
“As the beta release draws near, we’re putting the finishing touches on localizing the new scenes in the upcoming demo,” reads the update. The closed beta comes off of the success of the demo that the developer put together back in August for Steam’s Visual Novel Fest.
Fantastico also dropped a few details regarding the characters that will be part of this first entry, “The Interview”, which is being planned for release this Winter:
Helena is a journalist at “Bloody Disgusting” (no relation to us), is entangled in a violent, manipulative relationship with her boss, Paul.

After helping to pioneer Italy’s budding giallo genre throughout the 1970s with influential titles like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and Deep Red, Dario Argento took a brief sabbatical from the lurid thrillers to explore supernatural elements in Suspiria and Inferno. When the latter failed at the box office, he made a triumphant return to gialli in 1982 with Tenebrae (sometimes spelled Tenebre; originally released in the US as Unsane).
While his American contemporaries were trying to come up with inventive instruments of death to propel slasher films, Argento was designing more lavish ways to film his kill scenes. Suspiria remains his crowning achievement, but Tenebrae finds the filmmaker bringing his honed visual panache to the giallo sandbox in which he made a name for himself. The result stands not only as one of Argento’s strongest efforts but also a landmark giallo work.

Love him or hate him, Nicolas Winding Refn continues to be a voice of sanity in a film industry beset by upheaval. Variety reports that the Danish auteur went off again about what ails cinema today at the Venice Film Festival in a tribute to Ruggero Deodato. And Refn didn’t hold back, bashing streamers for being “overfunded and rotten with money and cocaine,” and rallying against the integration of AI into the movie industry.

Nicolas Winding Refn is calling on Hollywood to save cinema, especially if it means taking the streamers down a peg or tow. The “Drive” and “Only God Forgives” director slammed streaming content for having “saturated everything” and “devalued” film to “just a swipe” during a tribute to Ruggero Deodato at the Venice Film Festival, as reported by Variety.
“It’s incredibly sad and terrifying because art is essentially the only thing — besides, you know, sex, water, and happiness — that makes us exist,” Refn said, while adding that streamers have been “overfunded and rotten with money and cocaine” for years. Refn previously helmed “Copenhagen Cowboy” for Netflix and “Too Old to Die Young” for Prime Video, which he claimed Amazon buried on the platform for fear of “looking bad.”

While at the Venice Film Festival to pay tribute to Ruggero Deodato, “Drive” and “The Neon Demon” filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn participated in a masterclass and bashed streamers for being “overfunded and rotten with money and cocaine.”
The director, who previously infuriated some in the film biz by claiming that “cinema is dead,” said he has somewhat changed his mind and will now fight for cinema to continue on because streamers have “kind of saturated everything” and “devalued content to just a swipe.”
Refn, who last directed the series “Copenhagen Cowboy” for Netflix, said “it’s incredibly sad and terrifying because art is essentially the only thing – besides, you know, sex, water and happiness — that makes us exist.”
“Even though I projected it was dead a few years ago, it has changed into something we have to fight for,” he added. “Theatrical movies are part of what makes us human and experience creativity.

If you’re eager to delve into Ruggero Deodato‘s final project with developer Fantastico Studio and their Cannibal Tales visual novel game, you’re in luck. Cannibal Tales will finally have a demo available on August 7, and accompanying the news is a brief interview with the late Ruggero Deodato that was recorded before his death in late 2022.
The video features Deodato revealing his insights into his decision to dip into the world of video games with his script, saying that it was “time to complete my circle”. Deodato went on to say that he liked how the project (which was Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare at the time) was progressing, with how the characters were being portrayed, along with the atmosphere.

Before the 1975 masterpiece Jaws made us all afraid to go in the water, another film presented equally terrifying footage of real underwater nightmares. Directed by Peter Gimbel, the 1971 documentary Blue Water, White Death follows a group of aquatic photographers and adventurers determined to capture the first underwater footage of Carcharodon carcharias, the mythic apex predator commonly called the great white shark. While not a horror movie per se, the film presents breathtaking footage of massive sharks shot from within cages designed specifically for the expedition. It also includes shocking acts of animal cruelty and a dated understanding of marine wildlife. Premiering three years before publication of Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel Jaws, this unprecedented documentary formally introduced the world to the great white shark and likely planted seeds that would go on to change cinematic history as we know it.

From Haxan to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, horror cinema has been stretching the definition of reality for well over a century now. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who still believes in the “based on a true story” claim that often accompanies genre releases, with most audiences having already come to terms with the fact that Hollywood productions aren’t exactly meant to be educational.
That being said, there are still a few unconventional projects that can successfully blur the line between truth and fiction, such as Animal Planet’s infamous series of cryptid-based mockumentaries which tricked audiences into believing that mermaids and megalodons could be living among us. At a certain point you care less about world premieres and fixate mostly on a festival’s repertory slate. And even by the high standards set with Cannes Classics or NYFF Revivals is this year’s Venice Classics in a class of its own. We could start at the new cuts for three of the greatest directors ever: One from the Heart is the latest film to be given a revision by Francis Ford Coppola, following recuts of Apocalypse Now, Twixt, and Dementia 13––to say nothing of restorations like The Rain People, of which we’re hosting the New York premiere next weekend––while Andrei Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev will debut in “the reconstruction of the complete original version, which was censored before its release and has never been seen until now.” Meanwhile one of Yasujiro Ozu’s greatest films, There Was a Father, has been amended by “recent rediscovery...

Recently restored versions of William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist,” Terrence Malick’s “Days of Heaven” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “One From the Heart” feature in the Venice Classics section of the 80th Venice Film Festival.
The lineup of recently restored films in Venice Classics, which is curated by the festival’s artistic director Alberto Barbera in collaboration with Federico Gironi, was unveiled on Friday.
“The Exorcist” is screened, 50 years after it was produced by Warner Bros., alongside Disney’s “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm,” starring Shirley Temple and directed by “the prolific and sometimes brilliant” Allan Dwan, to mark the Hollywood studios’ 100th anniversaries.
“One From the Heart” and Arturo Ripstein’s “Deep Crimson” are “not just restored, but also revised by the filmmakers themselves in what are genuine Director’s Cuts,” Barbera and Gironi said, while Andrei Tarkovsky’s masterpiece “Andrei Rublev” will be presented in the reconstruction of the original version,...

Things have been fairly quiet regarding the development of Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare. According to developer Fantastico Studio, the project is still alive, though not in the way you might expect (more on that in a bit). In light of director Ruggero Deodato‘s passing, the developer has decided to switch things up, announcing the visual novel game, Cannibal Tales.
You’re probably wondering just how this all makes sense. According to the developers, development on Borneo: a Jungle Nightmare has been halted, due to a lack of funds. Sadly, attempts to secure additional funding haven’t been successful. According to Fantastico, they don’t even have the necessary resources to complete a vertical slice of the game.
Therefore, the team has decided to pivot, returning to the original idea with their collaboration with Deodato. “We will create a visual novel using the master’s unpublished screenplay, and the project will be called Cannibal Tales.

Raquel Welch, the electric, multi-talented superstar of culture-rocking films like "One Million Years B.C.," "Myra Breckinridge," and "The Three Musketeers" has died. We're only 46 days into 2023, and it seems like the death of a major star has rocked almost every one of them. Burt Bacharach, Carlos Saura, David Crosby, Lisa Marie Presley, Ruggero Deodato, Cindy Williams — the list, unfortunately, goes on and on.
There's something particularly painful about Welch's death. She was best known in her time as a sex symbol. Parts like the role in "One Million Years B.C." which gave her such cultural latitude also hemmed her into a kind of straitjacket, in terms of roles she'd later be asked to play. But Welch soldiered on, delivering dynamic yet precise performances in everything from whodunnits like "The Last of Sheila" and social thrillers like "Bluebeard."
Her brilliant sense of timing regarding line delivery — comic and otherwise — is still deeply,...

Nearly three years have gone by since it was announced that Fantastico Studio was teaming up with filmmaker Ruggero Deodato for a video game that would serve as a follow-up of sorts to Deodato’s infamous 1980 movie Cannibal Holocaust. Deodato was serving as a script director on the project, which was originally going by the title Cannibal and was later renamed Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare. Sadly, Deodato has passed away and won’t have a chance to see the finished game for himself – but our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that Fantastico Studio is still working on Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare, with their aim being to release the game on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and mobile sometime in 2024.
Here’s a description of the game:

Ruggero Deodato, the Italian filmmaker whose hyper-realistic found-footage horror pic Cannibal Holocaust got him arrested and was banned in more than 50 countries, died today, Italian media reported. He was 83. No details of his death were given.
Deodato wrote and/or directed dozens of films and TV shows spanning myriad genres during a 60-year career, but none was more notorious, controversial or scrutinized than 1980’s Cannibal Holocaust. The film’s intense and authentic-looking gore led many to believe that local actors actually were murdered on screen. The film was seized by Italian authorities, who later arrested Deodato and put him on trial for murder and animal cruelty.

Ruggero Deodato, the Italian director behind the gruesome and controversial 1980 film Cannibal Holocaust, died Thursday in Rome, the Il Messaggero newspaper reported. He was 83.
Made in the style of a documentary and shot in Colombia, Cannibal Holocaust starred Robert Kerman and employed purported “found footage” taken by a sadistic American film crew during an expedition into the Amazon jungle to locate indigenous tribes.
It depicted murder, mutilation, torture, gang rape and animal slaughter and was banned in several countries including Deodato’s own, with Italian authorities seizing his film and destroying prints shortly after it hit theaters.
Deodato was put on trial for murdering actors and faced 30 years in prison, but he produced the supposedly dead men in court, and the charges were dropped (the actors had signed contracts to disappear for a year). He was fined for obscenity, however.

In the wake of director Ruggero Deodato‘s death, some of you are probably wondering about the fate of what appears to be Deodato’s final work in Borneo: A Jungle Nightmare. The game, which is being developed by Fantastico Studio for release on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and mobile, is still very much in development. However, according to the Steam page, Borneo‘s release date has been pushed to 2024.
Obviously, there’s been no update from the developer regarding Deodato, who was serving as a script director for Borneo. The game, which is based on a completely new screenplay, and is intended as an original chapter in his series of cannibal films, recently had a time-limited demo available back in November to gather player feedback.
Developer Fantastico Studio also released a devlog back in October that delved into the development of the game, which also explained its name change.

Ruggero Deodato, director of the infamous 1980 film "Cannibal Holocaust" and one of the most boundary-pushing filmmakers in cinema history, has died at the age of 83. The Italian media reported that he died on Thursday (via The Guardian). Deodato was a prolific director with numerous credits, though he will perhaps forever be known for "Cannibal Holocaust," in large part because of the controversy he courted while promoting the film. He was so successful in convincing people that his found-footage horror film was actually created with real found footage that he ended up on trial for the murders of his actors, who had to come to court and prove they were still alive. Now that's a marketing scheme.
The brutal horror film has gone down in history as one of the most difficult to watch, because while the footage of humans dying is all faked, there are real animal deaths depicted. The onscreen deaths of a monkey,...

Italian screenwriter and director Ruggero Deodato, whose lengthy career was most noted for the controversial horror film “Cannibal Holocaust,” died Thursday at age 83, according to multiple reports.
The 1980 film, a “found footage” pseudo-documentary pioneer, depicts an anthropologist from New York University played by Robert Kerman leading a team into the Amazon rainforest to find crew of documentary filmmakers that went missing. They discover their bodies, but are able to recover the crew’s film reels, which a US television station then wants to air, despite gory footage of real violence against animals, sexual assault and exploitation of the native Amazonian populations.
The graphic violence in the film raised objections, including an arrest of Deodato on a series of charges including murder after rumors said some of the deaths depicted in the film were real. Deodato later brought the actors to court to prove they were alive, and the charges were dropped.

The graphic violence in the film raised objections, including an arrest of Deodato on a series of charges including murder after rumors said some of the deaths depicted in the film were real. Deodato later brought the actors to court to prove they were alive, and the charges were dropped.

The film world has lost one of its most controversial figures, as it has been confirmed that Italian screenwriter, director, and actor Ruggero Deodato has passed away at the age of 83. Described by filmmaker Mick Garris as “a sweet man who made brutal cinema”, Deodato was best known for directing the 1980 film Cannibal Holocaust, which got him arrested because the authorities suspected he had really murdered members of his cast. They were all just fine, but Cannibal Holocaust has also sickened and disturbed many viewers with its depiction of multiple real animal killings. Deodato would later say he regretted including the deaths of those animals, saying it was “stupid” to put those moments in the movie.
Deodato was born on May 7, 1939, and got involved with filmmaking at the end of his teens because the area in Rome where he lived also happened to be the neighborhood where the major film studios were located.
