Rob DesHotel, writer/co-executive producer of CBS’ comedy series Man with a Plan, has passed away. He died suddenly yesterday of a suspected heart attack. The veteran TV writer-producer was 52.
Known mostly for his comedy series work, DesHotel segued seamlessly between half-hour and hourlong shows throughout his career.
He landed his first staff writing job on the NBC comedy series Hope & Gloria. DesHotel went on to work on the first two seasons of Joss Whedon’s WB drama series Buffy the Vampire Slayer as story editor and executive story editor. He then joined Fox multi-camera comedy series That 70s Show at the start of Season 2 as co-producer and stayed on until the series’ end after eight seasons, rising to executive producer.

Flu. What's all that about then? As if this time of year isn't rubbish enough, the late Autumn and Winter seasons always seem to give you the gift of the snotty, phlegmy flu. While chemists have good cause to celebrate, the rest of us are confined to bed with copious amounts of tissues, hot water bottles and those funny medicines that taste like edible hell.
Buffy, superheroine that she may be, has nevertheless succumbed to this infernal condition. It's understandable, given that she's not at her peak. Her ex has turned psycho and has killed her friend's girlfriend. These are not peppy times for Buffy. So naturally, while fighting Angelus and phlegm, Buffy is for once, floored by the latter evil. Cue a trip to the local hospital, which naturally turns out to be a haven for a child-killing monster. No place in Sunnydale is safe, it seems. The local...

Rupert Giles. Champion of the piping hot, meaty drink and tweed suits. The archetypal Brit abroad, complete with Hugh Grant-esque clucking when embarrassed and a confused frown at American colloquialisms.
Even his friends are queuing up to poke the fun, on today of all days. Buffy scoffs that he wore tweed diapers (that's nappies to the Brits); Xander is reeling from the horror of mentioning Giles and orgies in the same sentence; even Giles' beau, Jenny calls him a fuddy duddy. Such a rock solid square clearly isn't capable of harbouring a dark past.
You would have thought so, anyway, but as it turns out, Giles is no stranger to the dark side. His shady history has happened to have caught up with him in a big way in the latest episode called The Dark Age. You know how some people just turn out to be unwanted acquaintances rather than friends?...

I can just hear that twangy song playing right now in my head, can’t you? Yes, we’ll soon be losing the weekly replay of the epic theme song for Game of Thrones, in favor of the dulcet tones of Jace Everett singing “Bad Things”, when True Blood returns for Season Six on June 16.
To help get us ready (as if we weren’t), HBO has released a new TV spot containing mostly footage we’ve seen in the trailer but if I’m not mistaken, a few little snippets of new footage as well. There’s a new poster, and they’ve also issued a press release that gives a teeny bit of info about the season in general, followed by synopses of the June episodes.
The synopses are fairly spoilery, so if you love spoilers, dig in. If not, it’s pretty easy to see where they are without reading them,...

Ever tried juggling? It's an accomplishment that very few can pull off, and to those like my clumsy self who have trouble throwing and catching one lone object, never mind three - as a career prospect, it's as likely as taking a stroll 20 feet up in the air.
Buffy wouldn't be too good at juggling - especially given that she's having trouble multi-tasking in her own life. Being a Slayer doesn't allow for an easy social life, as she finds out to her annoyance in Never Kill A Boy On The First Date. All she's after is a simple, hassle-free date with Mr Sensitive Of Sunnydale, Owen Thurman, but her true calling in life is making this aim difficult.
In fact, if Buffy's life were a list of school exam results, then she'd be mortified. While she's scoring a Grade A in making those around her green with jealousy,...

Heading into its upfront presentation Wednesday, CBS has firmed up its roster of returning series.
Coming back are dramas "Cold Case" and "Numbers" and comedies "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Rules of Engagement" and "Gary Unmarried."
Not being renewed are veterans "Without a Trace" and "The Unit" and freshman "11th Hour."
Additionally, CBS is close to acquiring the newly canceled NBC drama "Medium," which is produced by CBS TV Studios. NBC has until the end of today to release the series.
"Cold Case" fought a long hard battle to come back, with budget cuts as the focal point of the renewal talks as has been the case with all returning series this year.
It was boosted by a ratings uptick during the May sweep when the show scored with its Pearl Jam-themed episode.
CBS has been happy with "Christine" and "Gary," as they opened a comedy block for the network on Wednesdays.

Part of CBS' Wednesday night sitcom experiment, Gary Unmarried remains firmly "on the bubble" for renewal. The show hasn't exactly been a stellar performer but it's still done pretty well, especially considering its competition.
Gary Unmarried stars comedian Jay Mohr as a newly-divorced dad who's readjusting to the single life. Others in the cast include Paula Marshall, Jaime King, Ed Begley Jr., Ryan Malgarini, Kathryn Newton, and Al Madrigal.
While CBS execs are thinking about whether or not to give the sitcom a second season, there's a big change going on behind the scenes. Creator/executive producer Ed Yeager and executive producer Ric Swartzlander have left the show due to creative differences with the network.
If Gary is renewed, it's expected that co-executive producer Ira Ungerleider and consulting producer Rob Des Hotel will be moved up to showrunners.
The change in staff may be good news for the sitcom. If...

TV crime show writers often employ a ticking clock to ramp up suspense in an episode, putting characters under added stress to solve a mystery by an impossible deadline. But now those writers are the ones watching the minutes tick by, along with the rest of their show's cast and crews, as negotiations go down to the wire on whether networks will renew several veteran series.
Dramas including "Cold Case," "Without a Trace," "Numbers," "Law & Order" and "The Unit" remain up in the air. Same with comedies "My Name Is Earl," "Scrubs" and "The New Adventures of Old Christine."
"What you're seeing is networks playing hardball, especially with their more mature shows, when negotiating license fees," one network insider said. "There may be a few surprises at the upfronts next week with shows not coming back, or even jumping networks."
With ratings in decline and the networks saddled with covering...

"Gary Unmarried" executive producers Ed Yeager and Ric Swartzlander have left the freshman CBS comedy over creative differences.
The move comes as CBS is mulling the fate of the series, which is on the bubble for a second-season pickup.
There is speculation that two writer-producers on the show -- co-exec producer Ira Ungerleider and consulting producer Rob Des Hotel -- would be elevated to run "Unmarried," and with them in place the series would be renewed.
Yeager created "Unmarried," which stars Jay Mohr as a recently single painting contractor who shares custody of his children with his controlling ex-wife (Paula Marshall).
The project landed at ABC Studios after Yeager's friend, studio-based writer-producer Swartzlander, brought the spec to studio brass, they bought it and set it up at CBS.
ABC Studios co-produces the series with CBS Par.
After a promising start, "Unmarried's" ratings leveled off, with the show pulling respectable numbers in the 8:30 p.
