Dolly Parton took a major step in the direction of being a country singer when she appeared onstage at the Grand Ole Opry. Parton was still a child, but she had a sizable ambition and an aversion to the word “no.” She set her mind to appearing on the stage and made persistent attempts at getting there. Unfortunately, she was too young to sing at the Opry. It took some assistance from another performer to get her in front of the audience.
Dolly Parton shared how one country singer helped her at the start of her career
After Parton and her Uncle Bill decided she should perform at the Grand Ole Opry, they made their way to the historic venue. Once they arrived, full of ambition, manager Ott Devine informed the singer that she was too young to perform.

When Dolly Parton realized she wanted to be a musician, she set her sights on performing at the Grand Ole Opry. She put on small performances, but she and her Uncle Bill never lost sight of their goal of having her get onstage at the historic venue. When she finally had a chance to, she only got onstage because she broke a rule.
Dolly Parton broke the rules at the Grand Ole Opry
Parton’s Uncle Bill firmly believed in her star power, and he saved up enough money to bring her to the Opry.
“Nobody ever told me that you couldn’t do anything you wanted to do,” Parton said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. “I just always thought, ‘Well, all you gotta do is just go there and if you sing well, you can be on the Grand Ole Opry.’ Gettin’ the nerve was probably the hardest part,...

This article contains major spoilers for "Cobweb."
As anyone with arachnophobia can attest, there are few moments more horrible than looking up at the ceiling for the giant spider that was there only a moment ago, only to find nothing there. Well, except maybe the moment where the giant spider reappears on your pillow, a few inches away from your face. Samuel Bodin's 2023 horror film "Cobweb" preys on that kind of fear with a monster who is unseen for most of the movie's runtime, and who hides under on ceilings, under furniture, and inside the walls in the film's blood-soaked final act.
The fact that there even is a monster is hidden for much of the movie, which instead presents young Peter's (Woody Norman) parents, Carol (Lizzy Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr), as human monsters who just might kill him and bury him in the pumpkin patch if he doesn't behave himself.

Comedian Adam Devine seems to think that Marvel films have ruined comedy. In fact, the actor believes that audiences crave big-budget blockbusters, and no longer have any interest in seeing small films that don’t match the scope of superhero films, “I think Marvel ruined it. It feels like superhero movies kind of ruined comedies,” Devine said on This Past Weekend with Theo Von. “Because people go to the theatre and you expect to watch something that costs $200 million to make and comedy movies aren’t that. You’re like, ‘well, why would I spend the same amount of money to go...

Restarted negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that could mean an end to the actors strike have raised hopes for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Oct. 31-Nov, 5 in Santa Monica. What everyone is hoping for is, in the words of one leading indie producer, that “we can all get back to business.”
Even without a new SAG-AFTRA deal, there is a healthy batch of new titles on offer — a mix of international features and U.S. indie films that have secured interim agreements from the union to begin production. “In the last few days we’ve seen a waterfall of lineups,” says Nadiia Zaionchkovska, Cco of newly-founded Ukraine distributor Green Light Films, which will be making its market debut at this year’s AFM. “Lots of theatrical films, lots either in post or in pre-production, ready to shoot in the first...

The Pitch Perfect spin-off, Bumper in Berlin, is getting bumped off. According to Deadline, Peacock is not moving forward with the sophomore season of the musical comedy series. Previously, the network renewed Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin for a second season in early January. Unfortunately, Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin is another victim of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The fight for better representation, pay, and safety in the entertainment space is delaying productions across a broad spectrum, and Bumper in Berlin is getting swept up in the fallout.
While Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin is canceled, Universal says Pitch Perfect is still an essential part of its IP library. The franchise’s Elizabeth Banks continues developing projects with the studio, and Bumper in Berlin showrunner Megan Amram still has an overall deal with Universal Television.

Peacock has reversed course and canceled the second season of its Pitch Perfect TV spinoff Bumper in Berlin, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The renewal was first announced back in January, after the show’s first six-episode season debuted on Nov. 23, 2022. At the time of the renewal, NBCU said Bumper in Berlin was the streamer’s top comedy series to date, but has not released any viewing data.
The cancellation comes amid Hollywood’s dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and marks yet another series, alongside the canceled second seasons of Prime Video’s The Peripheral and A League of Their Own, to have the plug pulled during the work stoppage. At the time, A League of Their Own co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson criticized Prime Video’s decision, writing that “to blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly.”

“Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin” has been canceled at Peacock despite the fact the show was previously renewed for a second season.
The spinoff of the “Pitch Perfect” film franchise originally debuted on Peacock in November 2022 and was renewed in January 2023. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the decision was made to cancel the series as the ongoing strikes in Hollywood meant that production was not able to begin as originally scheduled.
The series saw Adam Devine return as Bumper Allen as he moves to Germany to revive his music career when one of his songs becomes big in Berlin. Along with Devine, the cast of Season 1 included Flula Borg, Sarah Hyland, Lera Abova and Jameela Jamil. Per NBCU, the series scored the biggest comedy premiere in Peacock history, as it was watched by more accounts in its launch weekend than any other Peacock Original comedy to date.

Cobweb, much like its namesake, fills a space relatively well despite gaps, and though its engineering is notionally unique, it's built on well-worn, even ancient, patterns.
Woody Norman is Peter, he's already had a central role in C'mon C'mon and horror fans will likely see him in the forthcoming The Last Voyage Of The Demeter. In one of those identikit American horror movie suburbs that looks suspiciously like a couple of street exteriors with matching Eastern European film studio sets he does the usual kid things of going to school, putting up with his parents, and hearing voices from the walls.
He's got a teacher, Miss Devine, as on the nose a bit of naming as Matilda's Miss Honey. Cleopatra Coleman manages requisite levels of concern, empathy, and eventually action. That said, there is a moment that undermines her character that seems a consequence of shuffling scenes in the edit.

Directed by Samuel Bodin, Cobweb is a well-made horror thriller, but the problem is that it gets trapped in its own intrigue and doesn’t manage to find a way out of the mess. The story begins by showing us the life of a boy named Peter. He gets bullied at school, and his father is too cold a figure. His mother seems to love him, but even she grows cold as time progresses. All manner of wicked things seem to be surrounding the young boy, and it all has to do with the voices coming from behind a wall in his bedroom. The premise of Cobweb is indeed intriguing, but does it even have a resolution, or is it just a pretext for bombarding the audience with cliches?

Cobweb, directed by Samuel Bodin, offers a chilling exploration of childhood dark fantasies, the repercussions of parental negligence, and the enduring impact of unchecked childhood trauma. This horror thriller dives into the secrets of a dysfunctional family and the haunting struggle of a young child attempting to survive in a household fraught with horrifying mysteries. The film features a talented cast, including Antony Starr, Lizzy Caplan, and Cleopatra Coleman, and deftly showcases a great effort to conjure fear and suspense throughout its enigmatic narrative and grim and creative visuals.
While Cobweb successfully taps into the fear of the unknown, effectively keeping us on the edge of our seats, some die-hard horror fans like me may find the storyline extremely predictable and find that it falls short of delivering the satisfactory horror experience they might expect. In comparison to other films in the horror genre like The Babadook, which masterfully explores a psychological horror,...

“Workaholics” and “The Righteous Gemstones” star Adam DeVine called out Variety, saying the trade magazine misrepresented his comments about Marvel movies in a podcast interview.
While promoting his latest Netflix movie “The Out-Laws” on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast, DeVine gave his theory about why there have been fewer theatrical comedies in recent years, crediting the shift to audiences expecting to see “$200 million” movies in theaters. DeVine blamed Marvel and “superhero movies” for creating that expectation.
That interview led to Variety posting an article titled “Adam Devine Says Marvel Movies ‘Ruined Comedies’: They ‘Make Those Movies Kind of Funny,’ But ‘It’s Not Real Comedy.'” A social media post promoting the article read, “Adam Devine: ‘You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f—ing comedy…My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.'”

Outside of its CGI battles, stacked casts and casual disregard that not every series within the franchise needs its own franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be best known for its implementation of comedy. Certainly the MCU has some legitimately hilarious moments, with some movies landing the laughs better than others (Thor: Ragnarok and the Guardians movies tend to get the most praise here). But according to actor Adam DeVine, who is no stranger to the comedy game, Marvel has outright ruined the genre.
Speaking on the This Past Weekend podcast (per Variety), DeVine said, “You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f*cking comedy…Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There’s still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy…it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.” That feels like a bold statement, but DeVine defended it as such: “I feel...

Los Angeles, Aug 8 (Ians) Actor Adam Devine has shared his theory that Marvel movies and other superhero films killed the traditional Hollywood comedy.
The ‘Workaholics’ and ‘Pitch Perfect’ actor recently appeared on Theo Von’s ‘This Past Weekend’ podcast during his press tour for Netflix’s ‘The Out-Laws’ and shared his theory, reports Variety.
The actor noted that because Marvel movies rely so much on humour they ended up becoming Hollywood’s new de facto comedy films.
“You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f****** comedy,” Devine said.
“Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There are still good (comedy) shows, but movie comedy, it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it. I feel like superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theatre and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make, and comedy movies aren’t that.

Adam Devine has a bold theory about the effect that Marvel films had on the general audience and said that “superhero movies ruined comedies.”
While making an appearance on This Past Weekend with Theo Von, Devine talked about the quality of comedies in Hollywood. The Righteous Gemstones star said that although TV comedies are still good, he can’t say the same about movie comedies.
“My theory is I think, I think like Marvel ruined it,” Devine said. “I feel like superhero movies kind of ruined comedies. Because people go to the theater and you expect to watch something that costs $200 million to make and comedy movies aren’t that.”
The Pitch Perfect alum noted that moviegoers are stuck in a predicament about where to spend their money opting for a bigger budget production where you get more bang for your buck.

The awkward tension between youth pastor Kelvin Gemstone and his ex-satanist bestie Keefe Chambers has at long last been dispelled!
In Sunday’s penultimate episode of The Righteous Gemstones, Kelvin’s (Adam DeVine) recent near-death experience and abduction led him to finally plant a kiss smack-dab on Keefe’s (Tony Cavalero) lips just seconds before leading service for the family’s megachurch. The moment certainly caught Jesse and Judy off guard, but brother and sister were seen smiling as the three walked away to head out on stage. Bj’s knowing glance, however, indicated that he saw the kiss coming from miles away.

Peter is a quiet, reserved and precocious child who is picked on at school. He doesn’t have many friends and his relationship with his parents is a seemingly distant one. One night, he is awoken by the sound of knocking coming from inside his bedroom wall. Fearful of what might be in there he cries out; he is finally tended to by his mother, Carol (Lizzy Caplin). Director Samuel Bodin established a talent for crafting bone-chilling scares with “Marianne,” a series that saw a fairy tale nightmare spill over into waking life for its protagonists. For his follow-up, Cobweb, Bodin steps further into the realm of fairy tales for a gateway horror effort that plays like a bedtime story. In the severing of reality, though, Cobweb spins a messy web.
Eight-year-old Peter (Woody Norman) suffers night terrors that have his parents, Carol (Lizzy Caplan) and Mark (Antony Starr), at their wit’s end. Peter’s insistence that something’s inside his bedroom walls tapping all night long gets chalked up to an active imagination. The sounds become more consistent, and Mom and Dad’s peculiar reactions to Peter’s claims instill suspicion. Not helping the mounting mistrust is Peter’s school life, where his peers bully him. Peter’s new substitute teacher, Miss Devine (Cleopatra Coleman), takes...

After turning heads with the well-received but short-lived Netflix original horror series Marianne, French director Samuel Bodin moves into features with the visually compelling though ultimately disappointing chiller, Cobweb. Written by Chris Thomas Devlin, who took a stab at rejuvenating the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise in 2022, the script landed on the Black List, among the best unproduced screenplays of 2018, as well as its horror counterpart, the Blood List. That pedigree clearly helped draw a solid cast and crafts team, but after a promising set-up, the story’s internal logic gets scrambled.
Suspenseful though seldom scary, the film is set a week before Halloween and hinges for a good part of its run time on the reliable horror trope of the threat coming from inside the house.
It effectively defies the natural family dynamic of parents as protectors of the vulnerable by giving the young protagonist, Peter (Woody Norman, from C...

It’s one week before Halloween in a sleepy Michigan suburb and the pumpkins are already rotting in the backyard. For some reason, Peter’s (Woody Norman) suspiciously strict parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) are intent on shielding the eight-year-old from participating in the holiday festivities, which may have something to do with the spooky and unnerving presence that the boy senses within the walls of their dark and austere home.
Samuel Bodin’s Cobweb isn’t shy about drawing upon the iconography of many a horror film before it—even the name of the town where it takes place is a difficult-to-ignore nod to Halloween’s Haddonfield—yet it weaves a distinctly eerie spell over the audience in its depiction of Peter’s troubled young life. In the film, the boy becomes tormented by tapping sounds emanating from behind his bedroom wall, and after willing himself to knock on the wall,...

Loretta Devine will step in for her old Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Holliday in the upcoming New York City Center gala presentation of Pal Joey starring Ephraim Sykes.
Holliday had been previously announced for the role of nightclub owner Lucille Wallace but bowed out due to scheduling conflicts. The production runs Nov. 1-5 at City Center, starting with a benefit performance to be followed by a gala dinner at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
Both Devine and Holliday became Broadway stars for their performances in the original production of Dreamgirls in 1981, with Devine playing Lorrell Robinson and Holliday playing Effie Melody White.
The starry gala presentation of Pal Joey will be co-directed by Savion Glover and Tony Goldwyn, with Glover choreographing. The musical is being reconceived, with the character of Joey Evans portraying the character as a Black jazz singer who refuses to compromise on his craft...

Halfway into The Out-Laws, I was wondering if I should get a drink and watch the rest after getting a little buzzed because that would have certainly made this experience more profound. Not that it is any less than when you watch it dead sober. But there is one condition. You need to have a penchant for bad movies, like me. That is the only way you would enjoy The Out-Laws. It is a very obvious bad movie, which fits right into the “so bad that it’s good” genre. This is a movie where a man mistakes another man’s genitals for a ripcord while sky-diving. The same man repeatedly gets his buttocks grabbed by his fiancé’s parents as if nothing happened. Then, during an all-important heist, this man uses a water gun instead of a real one. Yes, it is that kind of movie. With the freedom of R-rating,...

Review: There are few winners in this late phase of the Streaming Wars as accomplished as Adam Sandler. The former SNL funnyman went from box office superstar to a lucrative contract with Netflix, resulting in dozens of mediocre movies and very few good ones. Even when not starring in the films, Happy Madison Productions has released films of a similar ilk which are funny enough for ambient viewing but not nearly good enough for the big screen. The latest Happy Madison movie, The Out-Laws, starring Adam Devine as an average guy whose future in-laws are notorious bank robbers played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin.

The ex-007 plays a criminal father-in-law in an Adam Sandler-ushered action comedy that misses every time
Nothing strikes fear in the heart of a film critic more than pressing play on a new comedy and immediately seeing those ominous four words: “A Happy Madison Production”. ‘The Out-Laws’ Review: Adam Devine Tangles With Pierce Brosnan In Over-Stuffed Netflix Action Comedy
In 1979, Peter Falk and the late great Alan Arkin made the perfect odd couple in the classic action comedy The In-Laws. It even spawned a not-bad remake with Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks in 2003. The difference between those films, and a bit of an attempt to do something similar in the cleverly titled The Out-Laws, which starts streaming on Netflix today, is that those movies were genuinely funny –particularly the Arkin-Falk teaming. But this one, also a kind of Meet the Parents on steroids, relies far too heavily on nonstop and incessant action scenes to carry us through its 95-minute running time.
The fault here does not lie with its cast, which is pretty impressive overall. Basically this is a comedic vehicle for Adam Devine, who not only stars but also helped develop the Ben Zazove and Evan Turner script as well as producing with Happy Madison’s Adam Sandler and Allen Covert.

Like the chicken and the egg, it’s hard to know what came first for the new Adam Sandler-produced Netflix feature, The Out-Laws: Was it the title or the concept?
My gut would lean toward the former, so much does this watchable if forgettable crime comedy feel like an entire movie wrapped around a simple play on words. In case you somehow missed it, imagine for one second that your mysterious in-laws arrived in town on the brink of your wedding and turned out to be “out-laws.” Get it?
As silly as that sounds, the out-laws in question, played by Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin, manage to carry the concept to a few fun places, mostly because their characters — a pair of bank robbers named Billy and Lilly — truly look like they don’t give a shit. Compared to their yoga-teaching daughter, Parker (Nina Dobrev), and her fiancé,...

Tyler Spindel’s The Out-Laws is exactly the kind of film that streaming services have promised to showcase for years but have rarely delivered. Written by Ben Zazove and Evan Turner, it’s the sort of breezily pleasurable, mid-budget, and intimately scaled movie that used to be a staple of the video stores that streaming helped to kill.
Tightly wound bank manager Owen (Adam DeVine), on the eve of his nuptials to Parker (Nina Dobrev), finally meets her parents, Billy (Pierce Brosnan) and Lilly (Ellen Barkin), only for his excitement to quickly turn sour when his bank is robbed by bandits whom he strongly suspects are his future in-laws. Before Owen can confirm his suspicions, though, Billy and Lilly get their cover blown by a rival thief (Poorna Jagannathan), who takes Parker hostage to extort her parents, forcing them (and Owen) to commit further robberies to pay her ransom.

What if you managed a bank, and your fiancée’s folks turned out to be notorious bank robbers who saw their prospective son-in-law as the perfect patsy for their next hit? Not a bad setup for hijinks and hilarity. That’s what the filmmakers behind “The Out-Laws” are hoping, anyway. Produced by Adam Sandler (among others) and directed by Tyler Spindel, the not-so-original Netflix original plays like “Meet the Parents” crossed with “Fun with Dick and Jane.” Seeing as how the former inspired several sequels and the latter a remake, the situational comedy on offer is hardly fresh, though it still could (and should) have been funnier.

Some Hollywood couples are always polished and elegant. Adam DeVine and Chloe Bridges are definitely not one of those couples. The pair of actors, who have been together since 2015, always make a splash whenever they step out together, thanks to their uniquely goofy (and completely un-self-conscious) relationship. Whether they're posting silly pics on Instagram, hanging out courtside at NBA games, showing up at some of the most glamorous red carpet events in Hollywood, you can always count on them to be the ultimate kind of couple goals - the couple who always make each other laugh and have fun whenever they're together.
