If audiences enjoy waking up to Nitv’s Big Mob Brekky – Australia’s first ever Indigenous breakfast show – this week as part of Naidoc Week, Sbs director of Indigenous content Tanya Denning-Orman doesn’t rule out it becoming a permanent fixture in the future.
Hosted by Shahni Wellington and Ryan Liddle, the show premiered yesterday, broadcasting live from Sydney’s Taronga Zoo, and will run everyday until Friday.
“It’s an on-air pilot; that’s what we do at the channel,” Denning-Orman tells If.
“If Australians are wanting that different perspective, waking up to something different in the morning, with a bit of our cheekiness as a blackfellas – anything’s possible as part of Sbs.”
The decision to run the show stems from a desire to do something different after a year of heavy news content, as well as the current conversation around diversity in media.

An amazing Blu-ray year is capped by a genuine favorite, rescued by its filmmaker and set aside for almost twenty years. Wim Wenders was forced to make a shortened version of what he hoped would be his greatest success, following Wings of Desire: but he cleverly saved his 4.5-hour uncut version, making its Blu-ray debut on December 10. Longform video is currently the rage, so perhaps the time has finally come for the uncut Bis ans Ende der Welt. The music soundtrack is nothing less than fantastic, not to be missed.

Rick Kalowski.
ABC head of comedy Rick Kalowski has a ready answer when producers complain they can’t get a show funded because they have been unable to land an international financier or co-producer.
“If you can’t co-finance your scripted show internationally it’s not because it’s too local, it’s because it’s not good enough,” he tells If.
“There is so much hunger out there for scripted content that if you can’t finance it, it’s not a conspiracy. Many good Australian producers have had a lot of success selling their shows internationally.”
Most ABC scripted comedies are now co-financed internationally by streaming platforms or cable broadcasters such as Sky TV. “One of the few good things about the budget cuts in the past few years is that they have forced us to think internationally about our financing,” he says.
“Since I started in September 2013, I,...

Tracey Rigney (Photo credit: Michelle Grace Hunder).
Growing up in western Victoria, Tracey Rigney, a member of the Wotjobaluk and Ngarrindjeri peoples, rarely saw black faces on television apart from David Gulpilil and Ernie Dingo.
Today the writer-director, who started out as a playwright with Belonging and How Blak R U? in 2002, is among the screen industry’s fast-rising Indigenous storytellers.
Currently she is crafting ideas for one of eight shorts which will comprise the anthology feature Cook 2020: Our Right of Reply, jointly commissioned by Screen Australia and the New Zealand Film Commission.
When there was a call-out for applications initially she decided not to apply, given the demands on her time and energy as the mother of a two-and-a-half year-old girl.
A producer friend told her she had some good ideas and encouraged her to give it a go. “I applied not thinking I would get anywhere,” she tells If.

Are you really named Christopher after horror icon Christopher Lee?
Sure am, my mum loved him as an actor and I guess I scored his name.
Your past horrors – Daddy’S Little Girl, Come And Get Me, Charlie’S Farm – were all R rated and came with some controversy. Is that why Boar is just gory creature feature fun?
When I first wrote Boar I wanted it to be R Rated as well, really violent kills and gore like my past films, people seemed to really love the kills in Charlie’s Farm and the Torture in Daddy’s Little Girl. I wanted the fans to get that same feeling and enjoyment from the bloodshed in Boar. I wrote Boar to be funny when it had to be funny and serious when it had to be serious. I wanted to give the fans a journey they could go on for 96 minutes,...

"There's nothing out there except dust and ruins..." Watch out for angry wild boars! Australia has given us many various wild and crazy creature features, and we have yet another one on the release line-up for 2018. Boar is a movie directed by Australian filmmaker Chris Sun about a massive, dangerous, angry wild boar. "It cares for none, defends its territory with brutal force, and kills with a raw, animalistic savagery unlike any have seen before." Yeah, just one massive, vicious, wild boar. The cast of Boar includes John Jarratt, Simone Buchanan, Bill Moseley, Melissa Tkautz, Nathan Jones, Roger Ward, Hugh Sheridan, Ernie Dingo, Chris Haywood, Ricci Guarnaccio, Emily Williams, and Steve Bisley. This looks like it gets very violent and very bloody, which is exactly what we should expect from Australian creature horror. Here's the full theatrical trailer (+ poster / teaser) for Chris Sun's Boar, direct from YouTube: In the harsh,...

Opening the festival is one of 2018’s most anticipated new horror flicks, Christopher Sun’s creature-feature, Boar. Now we’re huge fans of Sun here at Nerdly, especially his films Daddy’s Little Girl (a film that should have got the plaudits the more recent Hounds of Love received) and Charlie’s Farm. Sun is not the only filmmaker returning with a new film at this years Monster Fest, joining him are Daniel Armstrong (Murderdrome) with his film Tarnation; and Nerdly favourites...

If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.
Baz Luhrmann.s opulent romantic drama won six awards tonight, for best film, director, adapted screenplay, lead actor Leonardo DiCaprio, supporting actor Joel Edgerton and supporting actress Elizabeth Debicki.
That.s in addition to the six awards in craft categories plus the Aacta award for outstanding achievement in visual effects bestowed on Luhrmann.s film on Tuesday.
Kim Mordaunt's The Rocket, which had 12 nominations versus 14 for Gatsby, had to be content with just one trophy, for Mordaunt.s original screenplay.
The outcome is likely to reignite the debate about the near-impossibility of comparing a lavishly-mounted 3D film financed by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, which cost $160 million, with an independently-funded Lao-set film from a first-time director budgeted at about $2 million.

The movie is set in 1969 and follows Aboriginal teenager Willie (Rocky McKenzie) as he runs away from boarding school back to his home town of Broome to reunite with his girlfriend Rosie (Jessica Mauboy). During his journey, he encounters ‘Uncle’ Tadpole (Ernie Dingo), a benevolent but crazy drunkard, and a couple of traveling hippies as he maneuvers across country trying to outrun his boarding school’s headmaster Father Benedictus (Rush), who’s closing in on him. As Willie gets closer to home, friendship, family and love become the order of the day.

Predicting the future of a film or television program and avoiding a financial disaster doesn’t necessarily require clairvoyant powers; testing your project with an audience at different stages of the production process can make a huge difference. Aravind Balasubramaniam reports.
“Nobody wants others to tell them their baby is ugly,” says the founder and CEO of Audience Development Australia (Ada) David Castran. “But it’s very important that producers listen with two ears and try to challenge their strongly-held views. Testing empowers producers by giving them information about the audience’s relationship with the pilot or program. I know at times that can be controversial.”
Drama has the highest production cost per hour of all TV programming, so well-executed testing can inform producers and broadcasters about the potential response to their shows.
Castran’s company was founded in the early 90s to provide comprehensive audience study services to the industry.

Australian actor Ernie Dingo has been suffering from bouts of depression since he was accused of slapping a young boy during a school visit over the summer - because the assault charge has left him unable to work. He pleaded not guilty in October and is due to stand trial in February 2011. Dingo reveals he has been banned from working with children since the incident, and he's devastated because he has always loved performing for youngsters.
He says, "I haven't worked because (the Department of) Education deem me unfit, as a threat... I can't do any work with children, and I have done that all my life. (I'm dealing with) a lot of negatives, mental anguishes, inserts of depression, not being able to work.

Bran Nue Dae, directed by Rachel Perkins and written by Ms. Perkins, Mr. Chi and Reg Cribb, follows the rebellious odyssey of Willie (Rocky McKenzie), a goody-goody Aboriginal teenager who runs away from the Catholic boarding school in Perth where he is the pet student of its insufferably paternalistic priest, Father Benedictus (a silly Geoffrey Rush).
Once Willie flees, Bran Nue Dae turns into a singing and dancing road movie whose Oz-like destination is his hometown of Broome, 3,000 miles away in western Australia. Father Benedictus, who gives chase in his Mercedes, suffers sundry comic humiliations while on the road. To reach Broome, Willie teams up with Annie (Missy Higgins) and Slippery (Tom Budge), a hippie couple in a van winding their way through the Australian outback.
Accompanying them is Uncle Tadpole (Ernie Dingo), a free-spirited old drunk whom Willie meets at a homeless camp. Tadpole might be described as the story.s tipsy,...

Based on a popular Aboriginal stage musical, Bran Nue Dae is about a teenage Christian’s struggle to stay morally pure in the Outback (and briefly in Perth) in the late ’60s, when wild music and loose women abound. Rocky McKenzie plays the boy, a small-town bastard who loses his would-be girlfriend to the excitement of the local bars and subsequently gets banished by his mother to a Catholic school run by the dictatorial Geoffrey Rush. McKenzie soon crosses Rush as well and flees to the train yards, where he meets boozy hobo Ernie Dingo, who promises to get McKenzie ...

Resistance comes in all shapes and sizes. A friend was on a bus in inner-suburban Sydney when two small Aboriginal boys jumped on and sat down without paying their fares – the driver announced that the bus would not leave until they did. The bus didn't move, and the boys didn't move either. Minutes ticked past. The other passengers began to get annoyed. The boys sat tight. The driver called for back-up. A police car turned up. Before the police were out of the car, the boys had hopped off the bus and vanished. Pointless? Depends. The boys challenged the driver, and the driver lost. His bus was delayed and his timetable was disrupted, which was a result for the boys. Self-defeating? Probably.

Bran Nue Dae is an over-the-top musical based on the late 1980s Australian play of the same name, about an Aboriginal boy who defies his original destiny and travels across the continent to get back home.

The eleventh and last part (W-z) of my extensive 2010 preview guide I'm still at work on and should be hitting the site either Tuesday or Wednesday. Before that though it is time to plug a few holes.
With release dates always in flux, there is no true definitive list of films opening this year as the number of titles change day-by-day and many aren't really locked in yet. As a result, there's definitely been some guesswork assembling this list, albeit carefully considered and researched to try and fit in what will come out, what's important enough, and what can be reasonably done.
However, there are always titles that slip through the cracks. Thankfully some ever vigilant readers have been keeping an eye out and sent in some suggestions of key projects I've missed. Not everything can be included of course, otherwise this list would take forever, but there are fourteen...

I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).

Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. Presented by Entertainment Weekly.

The Sundance Film Festival's competition lineup for 2010, announced Wednesday, might demand that audiences wear their serious caps. But the out-of-competition selections allow programmers and viewers to cut loose a little.
The 53 films that populate this year's Premieres, Next, Spotlight, Park City at Midnight and New Frontier sections run the gamut from the cosmically experimental to the star-studded and silly. There is indeed something for everyone at this year's event, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
As usual, Premieres collects work involving the industry's higher-profile talent, none more so than John Wells' feature directorial debut, "The Company Men," which stars Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones and Chris Cooper. Mexican actor Diego Luna's directorial debut, "Abel," will screen, as will Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating."
