Cat Deeley is back as host of the show, but there are major changes around her as the series revamps its format for this latest edition of the competition. For starters, we have a refreshed judging panel. “Dancing with the Stars” Mirror Ball champion Maksim Chmerkovskiy is coming onboard “Sytycd” as a judge for the very first time, joining Emmy-nominated “DWTS” and “Sytycd” alum Allison Holker and returning “Sytycd” judge JoJo Siwa, who recently made “DWTS” history as the first celebrity to compete with a same-sex partner, Jenna Johnson; they ultimately finished second. So You Think You Can Dance has been a mainstay of Fox‘s reality show lineup since it debuted in 2005. All of the guest judges on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’
The format of So You Think You Can Dance has broadly stayed the same throughout each season. The panel comprises two to four permanent judges, with guest stars joining in occasionally. For callback episodes and season finales, the panel could rise to twice or more its normal size.

If you are a fan of dance, you’re a fan of Tyce Diorio. He’s a man who has gone out of his way to make things right in the world of the dance situation, and he’s done a phenomenal job of it. He’s a man who likes to make the world a better place by movement alone, and he’s one who also likes to do what he can to change the way we all see it as we go about our lives. Jensen Arnold fell just short on “So You Think You Can Dance,” finishing in second place behind winner Hannahlei Cabanilla in what host Cat Deeley said was the closest final vote in the show’s history. So maybe Mandy Moore will let Arnold keep her Emmy instead.
The “Sytycd” season 15 finale took place the day after the Creative Arts Emmys, where Moore won Best Choreography for the second year in a row, though this was the first time she won for this series. Last year she prevailed for routines she created for “Dancing with the Stars.” To celebrate her win during Monday night’s finale, she even loaned her new trophy to the show, and it popped up in the kitchen.

A version of this story about Travis Wall and “So You Think You Can Dance” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
To say that “So You Think You Can Dance” has dominated the Emmys’ Outstanding Choreography category is an understatement. It has four of the five nominees this year, just as it had four in 2009, 2013 and 2014.
In the 12 years it has been on the air, it has landed 38 nominations, more than 60 percent of the category’s total of 63, and won eight times.
And to say that “Sytycd” has changed Travis Wall’s life is another understatement. As a wide-eyed (and mohawked!) 18-year-old, Wall auditioned in Season 2, ending the season as runner-up. His journey was only beginning: He assisted choreographer Tyce Diorio in Season 3 and was choreographing his own pieces for the show by Season 5.

It took a while to get here, but the top 10 dancers finally performed live for America’s vote on Monday night, August 6. They were paired off, and each of the five couples had to dance two routines, so everyone got to perform one dance in their signature style and one in their partners’. For ballroom dancer Cole Mills, that meant performing a contemporary routine with his partner Hannahlei Cabanilla. But you’d never guess that wasn’t his natural style.
Judge Nigel Lythgoe pointed out how rare it is for a ballroom dancer on “Sytycd” to excel in the contemporary style. He even compared Mills to another dancer on a rival dance show, likening the young contestant to Emmy-winning “Dancing with the Stars” and “World of Dance” star Derek Hough.
That’s pretty high praise. Do you agree? Watch Mills’s performance with Cabanilla above, and read what the judges thought of their performance below.

While many of us enjoyed the final hours of a three-day weekend, the remaining So You Think You Can Dance contestants worked overtime for the Fox series’ Labor Day installment.
And oh, what an episode it was. There were tears, courtesy of Mary Murphy. There was an overuse of the word “stupendous,” courtesy of Vanessa Hudgens. And there was some infuriating favoritism of one particular couple, courtesy of Cat Deeley.
All that, and a genuinely shocking elimination — at least for this recapper, who did not see it coming.

Yeah, she’s not flawless — she’s a little cloying in her abject praise and teary-eyed awe — but the woman knows her vocabulary, connects individually with contestants, wears a Mexi-print top like your favorite aunt, remembers past routines without hesitation, and doesn’t mind being critical. Can’t say the same about Kenny Ortega, y’all. And he directed High School Musical 3 and Hocus Pocus, those true choreographed miracles.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There are too many damn contestants at this stage of the game. I can’t separate my Jades from my Jennas, my Mariahs from my Maleces. They’re all twirling, hard-smiling pageant droids to me right now, and you know what? It’s too damn hot out to remember everyone.

Supercringe! Nigel Lythgoe’s general buffoonery can make for some pretty awkward critiques on Sytycd, but tonight he outdid himself while raving about Dorian “BluPrint” Hector’s prowess in an Afro Jazz routine. “People say, ‘This is your ethnicity, your heritage.’ But it isn’t! You didn’t grow up in a jungle!” the old white man exclaimed to the young black dancer. Say what?! At least BluPrint (pictured, center) put on a brave grin following the comment. As you can see, host Cat Deeley took a bit longer for her “Wtf, man?” face to catch up to the contestant’s.

The dancers try their hardest, but choreographer Sonya Tayeh has some words of encouragement: Try harder or die.
So You Think You Can Dance‘s Vegas rounds give us roughly the same amount of drama as American Idol‘s Hollywood week, but the stakes are actually higher because everyone in Vegas is extraordinary in at least one form of dance. On Idol, there’s always a chance some moron who squawked an Ok version of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” won a ticket to Hollywood, you know? On Sytycd, everyone is an astounding talent — which is why it’s sort of disappointing when unqualified guest judges like Hannah Simone from New Girl and Jason Derulo of “JaSON DeruloooOOooOO” fame get a say in the proceedings. Simone was honestly introduced as “a dance enthusiast.” It would’ve been more bad-ass if she were “an anti-dance curmudgeon” or something more threatening.

"Bones" will return from its winter hiatus with a bang. Not a literal bang, of course (probably, unless there's a murder victim who gets shot), but figuratively speaking the return will represent a big night for the show. There will be two episodes -- "The Diamond in the Rough" and "The Archaeologist in the Cocoon" -- aired back-to-back on Monday (Jan. 7).
What can we expect? A video promoting the episodes may have some clues.
Granted, the video does focus primarily on the first of the two episodes, "The Diamond in the Rough." In this episode, Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) head undercover -- as Buck and Wanda Moosejaw! -- to a dance competition in order to find their murderer. Guest stars from the real dance competition world (including Mary Murphy, Tyce Diorio, Dmitry Chaplin and Eliana Girard of "So You Think You Can Dance" will appear) help make...

Cross-show synergy. That's what it's all about these days. It makes sense then that "Bones" would team up with "So You Think You Can Dance" when the Jeffersonian team has to go undercover in order to solve a murder.
But can the detectives dance? Photos released from the episode indicate that they may indeed have some skills on the dance floor.
In "The Diamond in the Rough," Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) go undercover -- as Buck and Wanda Moosejaw, of course -- at a ballroom dancing TV competition.
Their competitors are impressive to say the least -- two of them are played by "Sytycd" alumni Eliana Girard (season 9) and Dmitry Chaplin (season 3).
This does not intimidate Buck and Wanda when they go to sign up though.
As anyone who watches ballroom-dancing competitions knows, part of the deal involves getting dressed up. This applies to men as well as women.

Returning from its brief hiatus, Bones jumps right back into Season 8 with more super villain Christopher Pelant, a new boyfriend for Cam, a possible life change for Angela and more fall-out and struggle with Brennan’s decision to take off with Christine. In a recent press conference call, executive producers Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan provided all the candid scoop on what’s next and what may have fans clutching at their hearts.
So what can you tell us about when the show will to get back to the Pelant story?
Stephen: The Pelant story will reappear in January. Pelant is always going to be hanging over their heads in all of the episodes, but he comes back in earnest—we’re actually shooting the episode now and it will air in January.
Hart: It’s being directed by Rob Hardy and it’s one of the biggest episodes we’ve ever shot; very exciting.

Bones finally returns next week after a month-long hiatus.
What can we expect from Booth, Brennan and the rest of the Jeffersonian crew this month and beyond? Executive producers Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan shed some light on that on a conference call today.
Consider yourself warned, minor spoilers ahead ...
Pelant's return: Expect him back in January, then perhaps again toward the end of the season. "We're starting to talk about our season ender," Hanson said. "And he may or may not be a part of that."
Sweets is making himself at home: See photo above. Enough said.
Honoring 9/11: "The Hero in Purgatory," airing on November 12, features five male squinterns, all young people at the time of 9/11, and their perspective will be those of children faced with tragedy.
Brennan's mystery family member: We'll meet one in Season 8. "We are going to see a family that we don't expect to see,...

Chehon Wespi-Tschopp was well aware that most of his ballet-world contemporaries would think him crazy for abandoning a lead role in the touring production of Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away for a chance to audition for So You Think You Can Dance, but he saw it a different way.

In the first time in Sytycd history, two ballet dancers take top honors!

Our top four dancers have done all they can and the votes are in... but which two will be named the winners of So You Think You Can Dance? After welcoming the previous top 16 contenders, here they are: Eliana, Chehon, Tiffany and Cyrus! The winners might have already been chosen, but before we find out the names of the lucky victors, we've got a two-hour show to get through! And because it's the finale, things are even bigger than normal - joining Nigel and Mary on the panel are (breathe in): Lil' C, Adam Shankman, Debbie Allen and Tyce Diorio. Phew! Cat Deeley's looking absolutely stunning and it seems Nigel's getting a bit overexcited, because he's started shouting: "Gangnam style!" So perhaps it's best if we move straight on to the first group routine, featuring the entire top 20. The dance, choreographed by Christopher Scott and (more)...

Mary Murphy is blogging for EW.com this season! Catch up with her and her thoughts on the most recent episodes of So You Think You Can Dance.
What an exciting night of dance! Tension ran high on the judging panel and in the audience as to who would make our finale. The pressure is off the judges because America voted for the top six tonight, and for who would be in the finale. We had absolutely no say, so I found it odd today that my Twitter was so abuzz with comments about how “we” could possibly let a certain dancer leave the show!

Silent screams pierced the So You Think You Can Dance stage this week, and it had nothing to do with Mary Murphy’s voice giving out during a Hot Tamale Train boarding call, or young female dancers responding to lascivious feedback from Nigel Lythgoe.

Like American Idol, every season of So You Think You Can Dance crescendoes to an exhausting and thrilling moment, that week when you realize you're watching superfly talents attempt to sustain superflyness for the eighth or ninth week in a row. It's bracing. It's awesome. But frankly, it's almost a little too grueling in a They Shoot Horses, Don't They? way. (Expect that '69 gem in our Best Movie Ever? section sometime soon.) And here we are, right in the thick of the glorious hell just a week from the finale -- or, as I heard Cat Deeley pronounce it this week, finarwley.
We have six combatants left, six varied levels of eye-popping skill, and another so-so appearance from guest judge Christina Applegate, whose critiques ranged from direct and insightful ("There's a picture in every moment you dance," she said sagely to Eliana) to empty veneration ("Beautiful," she said to.

On tonight's episode of "So You Think You Can Dance," the top 10 performed a group number, choreographed by Tyce Diorio, to "The Cool With The Stomp," in honor of Gene Kelly. Kelly's widow, Patricia, was in the audience to celebrate his birthday tomorrow, when he would have turned 100 years old.
Ultimately, four dancers were in danger of elimination -- Witney Carson, Audrey Case, George Lawrence Jr., and Chehon Wespy-Tschopp. With a little bit of time to kill, all four dancers were able to perform solo routines after they were put on the chopping block.
In the end, Witney and Chehon were saved by a divided judge's panel. Unfortunately, Audrey's performance this week, as a vampire alongside Twitch, wasn't strong enough to outweigh last week's errors, and she was cut. George also got the boot after a jazz performance that was technically sound but creatively lacking, according to Nigel.

The So You Think You Can Dance All-Stars returned to dance with the Top 10 contestants Wednesday night — and look who we have here! Season 7 standout Alex Freaking Wong, who exited early because of an Achilles tendon injury and had to sit out last summer, after being invited back as an All-Star, because he’d hurt the Other Achilles tendon. I would guess that Alex Wong’s abs positively loathe his Achilles tendons for denying them their rightful opportunity to glisten on national television whenever possible.

It isn't an exaggeration to say that "So You Think You Can Dance's" 9th season has delivered the best Top 20 the show has seen. And the first night of live competition did not disappoint. From Will and Amelia's lusty "Love Cats" to Cyrus busting a Broadway move (and wowing the judges), the dancers totally brought it.
That's the good news. The bad news is that four dancers -- Yes, 4! -- will be voted off next week. Meaning that two guys and two girls who danced their hearts out on Wednesday's (July 11) show won't be continuing in the competition. Unless we can all agree right now to send in one vote apiece for each contestant, thereby making it impossible for any of the dancers to land in the bottom 3 girls or guys.
