[This story contains spoilers for Echo.]
There are certain television shows that people within the entertainment industry all watch and admire, and one of those shows was Better Call Saul, the celebrated prequel-sequel to the almighty Breaking Bad. The number of influential filmmakers who watched Saul is at least a mile long (Steven Soderbergh, Guillermo del Toro, Darren Aronofsky to name a few), and the brass at Marvel Studios are all included in that group. So it was hardly a surprise when Marvel sought out Saul writer-producer Marion Dayre to lead the writers’ room of Echo, a mature miniseries that’s centered on Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox), who was first introduced as Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) deaf enforcer on Hawkeye (2021).
Under the tutelage of Saul co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, Dayre became a two-time WGA Award-nominated TV writer. She first co-wrote season two’s “Klick,” which put Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) on...

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)
In crafting Rian Johnson’s whodunit, editor Bob Ducsay took a bold approach to this intricate story, placing key information in plain sight. To be sure, just watch the Netflix movie a second or third time and see how many clues were right there all along (such as a nod to one character’s true identity and the source of a crucial cocktail). The meticulously crafted story follows a group of self-proclaimed disrupters who are invited to a weekend on the private island of their wealthy friend Miles (Edward Norton). Daniel Craig reprises his Knives Out character, detective Benoit Blanc, who is also at the island getaway when a murder takes place on the first night.
“It was important to us to make sure that the audience didn’t feel cheated,” Ducsay explains, noting that they decided to be “as honest as we could be with the audience.

“Better Call Saul” ended its acclaimed six-season run this week with a finale that some felt was among the best final episodes ever. But despite its status as one of the era’s great dramas – and its place as a worthy prequel to “Breaking Bad” – “Better Call Saul” has famously never won a single Emmy Award. With its haul this year, “Better Call Saul” has received 46 nominations.
That tally – which could grow higher next year as the show’s final episodes are eligible for Emmy Award consideration in 2023 – is on par with what “Breaking Bad” accomplished through its five total seasons. But “Breaking Bad” won 16 Emmys, including twice for Best Drama Series and four times for Best Drama Actor Bryan Cranston. Coming off that success – “Breaking Bad” won Best Drama Series twice for its final season on account of a split release – “Better Call Saul” had some big shoes to fill.

Adapting Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Goldfinch for the screen was never going to be an easy task. At 771 pages, it would make a daunting TV miniseries – and director John Crowley managed to whittle it down into an under-two-and-a-half-hour feature film. As any team adapting existing material must, the filmmakers had to […]

From Warner Bros. Pictures and Amazon Studios, The Goldfinch is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s globally acclaimed best-selling novel, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.
Directed by BAFTA Award winner John Crowley (“Brooklyn”), the film features a multigenerational cast led by Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) as Theo Decker and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Barbour.
With a Fall release date, expect an awards season push from Warner Bros.
Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day…a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch.

For the past five seasons, the Best Drama editing winner has gone on to win the Best Drama prize as well. So if you want a potential barometer for this year’s big prize, the three crucial editing nominees are “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” and “Better Call Saul.”
This doesn’t mean that “The Crown” or “The Handmaid’s Tale” won’t win Best Drama, but it’s noteworthy that they weren’t among the editing nominees. Neither were “House of Cards” or “This Is Us,” the other Best Drama nominees, as “Stranger Things” and “Better Call Saul” each got nominated for two episodes.
However, while “Better Call Saul” significantly saw Jimmy (nominated Bob Odenkirk) getting more Saul-like from “Breaking Bad,” it’s very much the dark horse. The real smackdown is between the dueling sci-fi newcomers, “Stranger Things” and “Westworld.” Both have their advantages (the Upside Down versus the robot...

While “Game of Thrones” achieved epic greatness with the ambitious “Battle of the Bastards,” “Better Call Saul” got even better in Season 2 with a looser and more experimental vibe. They’re squaring off for best drama series editing, with “Got” the likely winner.
Meanwhile, “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” which captured the “Trial of the Century” as a telling precursor to current racial strife, has the edge over the trippy “Fargo” prequel in the limited series/movie editing race.
“The Battle of the Bastards” brings to a head the heated feud between Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) and his army of Wildlings, and the Boltons, led by nemesis Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon). Director Miguel Sapochni used “Ran” as dramatic inspiration and the military strategy of Hannibal as reference with both armies trying to lure the other into the center and then attack from the sides.

Discussing the representation of women in Hollywood is never, you know, a fun topic, especially when it comes to below-the-line departments. In 2016, there are still glaring examples of a lack of progress for women.
While an improvement over years past, here’s just a quick sampling of accomplishments women were not recognized for: narration, music composition, writing in many categories, stunt coordination… There are plenty of categories, as well, where only one or two women were nominated, often with a male partner — such as Writing for a Comedy, where the sole female nominee is Sharon Horgan alongside Rob Delaney for “Catastrophe.”
But rather than dwell on that, let’s acknowledge some of the accomplished nominees who have a chance to be recognized for their achievements this year. Because regardless of gender, they’re awesome.

A review of tonight's Better Call Saul coming up just as soon as I'm cashier at the Hinky Dinky... "There's no point in me doing this if I can't be myself." -Jimmy Mike's half-measures speech from the Breaking Bad episode of the same name has hung over a lot of this Saul season, and not just because Mike himself has been suffering no end of headaches over his decision to opt for a half-measure over simply killing Tuco. It's because both Jimmy and Kim have spent much of this season, and "Inflatable" in particular, struggling to pull off half-measures when it comes to their careers and their relationship. Jimmy tried with Davis and Main, sort of. As Kim noted a few episodes back, he never really committed to the job, which we know he only took as an excuse to be near her(*). But he made an effort at times,...

A review of tonight's Better Call Saul coming up just as soon as I do the Carol Burnett thing with my ear... "You don't save me. I save me." -Kim What an oddly structured show Better Call Saul can be at times. Throughout the series, Jimmy and Mike rarely interact — or do it briefly, as happens here when Jimmy expresses concern about Mike's battered face — and are moving through stories with completely different tones, usually featuring different characters (though both of them have run afoul of Tuco and Nacho at some point), and at times feeling like different genres. Their lives and stories are destined to become far more entwined, but at the moment, Jimmy's in a legal dramedy and Mike's not only in a hard-boiled crime show, but one that for now has much more of a direction connection to Breaking Bad. Saul is far from the...

Many of you may already have noticed that AMC have released the first promo poster for their new show due out in 2016, Preacher, and – even better news – it’s been ordered to series for a ten episode run. Based on Garth Ennis’ Vertigo horror comic, fans are rabidly waiting to see how this series will turn out. It’s early days to be pulling apart a show that hasn’t even aired a trailer yet, but here’s what fans may be excited/bummed about, with the information we have to hand.
Pro: The Actors
Right now the show seems to have stocked its talent pool well. The actors currently involved in the project seem to be top drawer. Dominic Cooper fits the Jesse Custer role admirably, and, though many would prefer a dyed-in-the-wool Texan play the title role, he does look the part and...

It's not often that you hear TV producers proudly describe an aspect of their show as looking terrible — and using much less polite language than that — but then it's not often you have TV producers both as talented and idiosyncratic as "Better Call Saul" creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould. The aspect in question is the show's main title sequence (embedded above), featuring various images from Jimmy McGill's future life as Saul Goodman, all of it presented with the same terrible image quality of early VHS or public access television. Late last week, I spoke first with Gilligan and Gould — who, I should say, had trouble controlling the laughter at times when using a certain profane adjective to describe the picture quality of those credits — and then with "Saul" assistant editor Curtis Thurber, who put together the different title sequences, about what they wanted and what was necessary to put them together.

A review of tonight's "Better Call Saul!" coming up just as soon as I take off the space blanket... "Wow, you got a mouth on you." -Tuco Our second "Better Call Saul" installment is really two episodes in one: a long resolution of the Tuco fiasco, followed by Jimmy trying to get his act together to avoid ever being in a situation like that again. The former suggests a "Breaking Bad" rehash filtered through the personality of the new main character, while, the latter suggests... something else. And given that the episode ends with Jimmy being approached by Tuco's pal Nacho, it's not clear yet which version of the show will be triumphant. What is clear even at this early stage, though, is how entertaining it is to watch Jimmy try to talk himself out of trouble again and again. So, yes, the trip to the desert is a vintage Walter White scene,...

This article contains spoilers for all five seasons of Breaking Bad.
Since Breaking Bad drew to a close on Sunday, many of its eulogies have focused on how its serialised narrative has played with the format of television drama. You can argue that soap operas use the same technique, but the series has garnered acclaim and multitudes of fans for telling a thematically rich story that has ostensibly continued as one serial over six years.
The series has also kept viewers on the edge of their seats by cutting off at crucial points in that serial, but arguably, it's not the cliffhangers that became the show's trademark. Vince Gilligan and his writing team are unbeatable when it comes to beginning and ending episodes,...

Each year American Cinema Editors [1] (Ace) recognizes the best editing of the year in narrative film, documentary and television through the Eddie Awards. The nominations for achievement in 2011 have been released [2]. They include a couple of expected films such as Hugo and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and feature a couple other inclusions that might count as surprises to some. The full list is below. This list comes from the Ace press release about this year's Eddies. In this case, I like that there are feature film categories for dramatic and comedy/musical efforts; not that editing one or the other is more difficult, but editing is such a core component of comedy and musical films, and one that so often goes unheralded and even unexamined, that it deserves a moment in the sun. Looking at the documentary selections, I was at first disappointed not to see Senna included,...

hollywoodnews.com: The American Cinema Editors announced their nominations for the 62nd Annual Ace Eddie Awards Monday morning, recognizing outstanding editing in nine categories of film, television and documentaries.
Like the Golden Globes, the editors divide their films between “Dramatic” and “Comedic” categories, so its tough to peg how (or if) they play into the five Oscar nomination slots. At the very least, you can guess that the Academy’s five nominees will come from the five features listed below.
