Exclusive: Universal Cable Productions has optioned author Catherine Linka’s debut novel A Girl Called Fearless and its forthcoming sequel, A Girl Undone, to develop the stories into a series. Linka’s A Girl Called Fearless is set in an alternate future America where a synthetic beef hormone has wiped out millions of women and turned teenage girls into a valuable commodity to be “protected & contracted.” When she is “contracted” into marriage as a political pawn, Avie Reveare flees to Canada but is torn between her love and her freedom. Deadline reports that Alex Proyas - who has previously directed I, Robot, The Crow and Knowing - has signed on to direct a film adaptation of Joe Golem And The Drowning City, a graphic novel written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. Constantin Films recently acquired the film rights to the graphic novel, which was published by St. Martin’s Press in March. The film is expected to undergo production in Proyas' native Australia. The Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Eric Robinson are producing with Mystery Clock’s Proyas and Peter Donaldson. Mignola and Golden are exec producing. Constantin Film has acquired the film rights to "Hellboy" creator Mike Mignola's latest work "Joe Golem And The Drowning City" reports Deadline.
Mignola and Christopher Golden co-authored the supernatural-steampunk graphic novel which takes place in an alternate New York. In this universe, an earthquake in 1925 sunk lower Manhattan into the water - turning streets into canals.
Decades on, the 1970's to be precise, an orphaned teenage girl, an aging magician, a lunatic scientist, a Victorian occult detective, and a stalwart sidekick named Joe Golem who experience strange dreams, all come together to fight for the fate of the partly sunken city.

Alex Proyas is set to direct the feature film version of a graphic novel with filming to take place in Australia.
Created by Hell Boy’s Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, Proyas will adapt the story to bring Joe Golem and the Drowning City to the big screen.
Since Proya’s adaptation of epic poem Paradise Lost fell over, the Australian film-maker also picked up the adaptation rights to Robert A Heinlein’s sci-fi novella The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag in April and a project called Gods of Egypt with Summit Entertainment in May.
He is also set to direct a vignette within John Polson and Gary Hamilton’s Sydney Unplugged.

In this vision, lower Manhattan sank into the water during a catastrophic earthquake in 1925, leaving those unwilling or unable to abandon it to make a new life in streets turned to canals.

A few weeks ago, the release date of the two first seasons of Emily of New Moon was revealed. The first season will be released next week on April 20, and the second season on May 18.
