Barbara Walters, the glass-ceiling-shattering newswoman whose intimate television interviews with celebrities and world figures blended show business and journalism and induced many a tear, has died. She was 93.
Walters, the first female co-host of the Today show, the first evening news anchorwoman in broadcast history and a co-creator and co-host of The View, died Friday evening at her home in New York, ABC News announced.
Walters revealed in May 2013 that she would retire from journalism upon the conclusion of The View season in 2014. “I thought it was better to go when people are saying, ‘Why is she leaving?’ than, ‘Thank goodness she’s leaving!’” she said.
Yet Walters soldiered on with exclusive interviews, like one with Peter Rodger, the father of Elliot Rodger, the Uc Santa Barbara student who killed seven people in May 2014.

Simone Swink has been named executive producer of Good Morning America.
Swink, who has been with the show since 2010, is filling the top job following the departure in April of Michael Corn.
Corn, who is now president of Nexstar’s NewsNation, was accused last week of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed by Kirstyn Crawford, a producer on the show. She also claimed that a former ABC News staffer also accused Corn of sexual assault. Corn denied the claims.
Swink had been senior broadcast producer of the show, where she has been overseeing the GMA second hour. She originally joined the show as a writer.
“Simone is a dynamic, thoughtful and creative leader, experienced in collaborating across platforms,” ABC News president Kim Godwin wrote in a note to the staff. “I’m confident that she and the GMA team will continue to lead the show in new and innovative directions.

ABC News will turn to an insider to lead its flagship morning program, “Good Morning America,” one of the most critical roles in live television.
Simone Swink, a longtime senior staffer at the show, has been named its senior producer, according to a memo sent to employees by Kim Godwin, president of ABC News Sunday.
Swink takes a role which has been left vacant for months. The show, a pillar of the economics of both ABC and its parent company, Walt Disney, was previously supervised by Michael Corn, who left abruptly in April, and was recently accused of sexual harassment in a lawsuit filed last week. Corn has denied the allegations. ABC News has been sifting through candidates for the top job at “GMA” for weeks, and had considered a number of prominent executives from outside the company, according to people familiar with the process.

Jackie Levin, a veteran producer at NBC News’ “Today” who in recent years steered the show’s 9 a.m. hour through tumult and new triumph, is leaving the company.

Exclusive: James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and businesswoman Nancy Shevell McCartney, wife of Paul McCartney, are hosting an event in London on Monday night in support of Democratic Presidential hopeful Michael Bloomberg.
The high-end Conduit Club in London’s plush Mayfair district is expecting a capacity 200-person crowd for the private drinks event, which is organized in co-operation with Bloomberg’s campaign team. We have been told the get-together is not a fundraiser.
The event comes a day before the vital Super Tuesday election when 16 state and territory primaries will take place. Democrat voters overseas will also cast votes tomorrow, when big-spender Bloomberg will be on the ballots for the first time.
Anglophile and philanthropist Bloomberg has previously called Paul McCartney a “friend of long standing,” and the billionaire former mayor was a guest at McCartney and Shevell’s 2011 wedding party in New York. An Eventbrite page for tonight’s...

Veteran Washington correspondent Sam Donaldson, who retired from ABC News in 2013, spoke out in defense of CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta and criticized President Trump’s “wholesale attack on the mainstream press” as both “wrong” and “dangerous.”
He also criticized the White House press secretaries under Trump, without naming either Sean Spicer or Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
“I spent 52 years as a reporter in Washington, 16 of them as the White House Correspondent for ABC News, covering Presidents Carter and Reagan and President Clinton’s second term,” Donaldson said in a column published on CNN.com. “Back then, press secretaries tried to put the best face on it when things went badly for their boss. But they didn’t lie to you, as Mr. Trump’s press secretaries have done regularly, and they didn’t call you names to your face.”

Reporters like to tell stories, and they try to do it without becoming part of the tale. Jim Acosta has had little choice in the matter.
The journalist, whose profile has risen over the past two years while serving as CNN’s Chief White House Correspondent, has often found himself enmeshed in the headlines, particularly when the Trump administration in November of last year tried to block him from covering the president because the Commander-in-Chief often didn’t like the questions Acosta asked him at various events. Acosta later became a symbol of America’s belief in the First Amendment when CNN prevailed and got its employee reinstated.
Had CNN lost, says Acosta, “it would have been a radical change for our business,” with national and local politicians able to toss reporters out of public events simply because they asked impertinent questions. “It would have been a devastating blow to...

The ‘Jessie’s Girl’ singer was allegedly taken into custody on March 8 after blowing off a court date for a previous DUI arrest.
Rick Springfield was issued a DUI back in May 2011 after cops pulled him over in his 1963 Corvette Stingray in Malibu — he appeared to be intoxicated. His run-in with the law was less than cordial. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Rick threatened to kill the deputy who had arrested him, and the deputy’s family, if he had Rick’s car towed. The star is now facing consequences after he failed to show up for his court date to resolve the DUI matter.
Rick Springfield Arrested For Missing Court Date
A representative for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told TMZ, “Deputies went to Rick’s L.A. home this morning to execute the warrant … but by the time he was being booked, Rick’s attorney had the warrant recalled.

Randy’s naked Dwi arrest from August of 2012 has landed the country singer a whopping six months in jail, though chances he will have to serve any time are slim! Read on for all the details.
Though it may have taken five months for Randy Travis to be formally charged with a Dwi on Jan. 11 after he was arrested in Sherman, TX for driving while intoxicated on Aug. 7, the sentencing from his guilty plea has been much swifter. On Jan. 31, the country singer was sentenced to 180 days in jail.
Randy, 53, plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated on Jan. 31, TMZ reports. According to the Grayson County District Attorney, though he received the 180 day jail sentence, it’s been probated for two years — which means if he can manage to stay out of trouble in that time, he’ll also stay out of jail. He’s also been ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.

Josh rang in 2013 a bit too hard. The actor was arrested for public intoxication on Jan. 1.
Josh Brolin was arrested just before midnight on January 1 in Santa Monica, California for public intoxication. Josh was reportedly booked into jail at 3:02 Am and then released at 7:14 Am on Jan. 2.
Josh, 44, who is married to Diane Lane, was not given a citation, which means that he will not have to appear in court over the arrest, according to TMZ. In other words, it’s all said and done. He paid the $250 bail and was released from jail.
Josh was hanging out with a bunch of his good friends and ended up having “too much fun,” a friend tells TMZ.
Let’s hope Diane doesn’t leave Josh after his arrest. Veteran newscaster Sam Donaldson‘s wife, journalist Jan Smith Donaldson, divorced him after a DUI arrest, however, they were reportedly separated...

Many were surprised by recent news that veteran newscaster Sam Donaldson, 78, had been arrested for a DUI in early December, wondering what could have led the respected ABC News journalist to such a lapse in judgement. Sam, a well-known and respected ABC news anchor and reporter, is now making some news of his own: it's been reported that he was arrested for driving under the influence in Delaware earlier this month. Sam Donaldson has been arrested for DUI -- adding his name to a long list of fellow celebrities who've been busted for drunk driving. TMZ has reported that, according to law enforcement reports, 78-year-old Sam was pulled over on Dec. 1, after he had driven onto the shoulder of the road. During the stop, Sam reportedly failed a field sobriety test and was immediately arrested for DUI. Unlike some DUI situations we hear about in the celebrity world, Sam was reported to be very cooperative when in police custody, and was eventually released. Sam once spoke to the Academy Of Achievement about the importance of discipline in life -- a skill he seems to have lacked in this instance.

Ed Schultz's Monday night panel tackled the incident last week that created an immediate media frenzy: The Daily Caller's Neil Munro interrupting President Obama's remarks about his new immigration policy. Schultz noted Tucker Carlson's comparison to Sam Donaldson's "heckling" President Ronald Reagan. Donaldson rejected this parallel, pointing to underlying racial motivations. That topic of racism dominated the segment.

On Friday, President Barack Obama made a speech from the White House Rose Garden announcing a change in immigration policy, but before he finished his remarks, reporter Neil Munro from The Daily Caller interrupted him with a question.
Obama told Munro to hold his question. Later in his speech, when Obama felt that he had answered Munro's question, he said, "The next time I prefer you let me finish my statements before the question... I didn't ask for an argument. I'm answering your question."
Munro later released a statement regarding the incident. "I always go to the White House prepared with questions for our president. I timed the question believing the president was closing his remarks, because naturally I have no intention of interrupting the President of the United States. I know he rarely takes questions before walking away from the podium. When I asked the question as he finished his speech,...

CNN just had their lowest ratings in a decade. They are in disastrous shape. When I was on MSNBC, we would beat them with a stick. Even after "pro-cnn" stories like revolutions in Egypt and Libya, Japanese nuclear meltdowns and the killing of Osama bin Laden (CNN does much better when major news or international stories break out), we still beat them. Now they're doing so poorly I might even catch them on Current.
We started at almost nothing on Current, but we have been steadily improving our numbers. Why are we getting traction? Because people want an alternative -- the real news. So, I should just stay quiet and let CNN drive off that cliff. By the way, when I catch Erin Burnett -- which is not that far off because I'm beginning to see her in the distance in the demos -- everyone will know it. Who knows,...

So, what's on your mind these days? Maybe you're looking ahead to the general election or pondering the nature of judicial activism. Whatever the case, recent events make me pause, as I do often, to think about how much time we spend reading and listening to speculation and predictions from pundits-- that curious cadre of people we've installed in our society, on our talk shows and on our RSS feeds and newspapers who tell us what to think. Whatever one thinks of them, there's little question that these bearers of blood pressure do a very effective job of inflating the deeply contingent nature of reality and making us worry. In my industry, one of our trade magazines reported that the deployment of the words "double-dip recession" which crested at a frenzied 230 articles per week last year has now subsided to under 40 in February of 2012. Then there's the continuing Gop race...

Yesterday we reported on the surprising news that Chris Cuomo was going to be leaving Good Morning America (surprising because it was so sudden). Cuomo announced that he would still be on ABC, however, and would take over the co-anchor job on the nighttime news show 20/20.
Unlike Chris Cuomo's announcement, Diane Sawyer had given plenty of notice that she would be leaving Good Morning America and taking over Charles Gibson's anchor position at "World News" (Gibson is retiring).
Diane Sawyer has been part of the political and news landscape in the United States since the early 1970s. From 1978 to 1989, she was a political correspondent and co-anchor of the CBS Morning News, and then 60 Minutes. Sawyer moved to ABC in 1989 to co-anchor Primetime Live with Sam Donaldson (a former co-anchor of 20/20, back when Barbara Walters was also co-anchoring the news program) and even 20/20.

We’re all seen it: a guest on a TV talk show makes some outrageously bigoted or factually incorrect statement about Glbt people — and the host, who surely knows better, stays absolutely silent, leaving the impression that the statement is either (a) accurate or (b) part of acceptable discourse.
But there’s one bright, shining exception: that kind of thoughtless bigotry never goes unanswered on a talk show hosted by Joy Behar – whether it’s on the long-running female chat-fest The View or the new Hln show The Joy Behar Show (which airs at 9 Pm Et/Pt on Hln). When Joe the Plumber recently said gays can’t be trusted around children, Joy demanded he explain himself.
Even when the interviewee isn’t anti-gay, gay issues frequently come up when Joy is in charge. She had ex-Mormon and Oscar winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black on recently to talk about gays in the Mormon Church.

Veteran news anchor Sam Donaldson announced this week that he will be retiring from his full time position with ABC News. Donaldson has worked with the station for 41 years.
Though he won't be working full time, he will still continue to appear as a panelist on "This Week" and will have occasional spots on ABC radio. The modest anchor also requested that ABC not send out a press release, since he would still be doing some work with the station.
Donaldson was interviewed by the Washington Post and discussed his retirement saying, "Some people leave the business bitter, feeling they've been cast out, or they hang on too long. And I don't ever want to get in that position."
On his life after working as a popular news anchor, Donaldson said, "I'm sure I went through a phase that people knew me, I was on television, the head waiters tried...

New York -- Longtime ABC News veteran correspondent Sam Donaldson is easing quietly into part-time work, unlike the shouting that he sometimes did as the network's chief White House correspondent in the 1970s and '80s.
The 74-year-old journalist is leaving full-time work at the network later this month. It's not exactly retirement but instead what Donaldson terms "cutting back." He told the Washington Post, which broke the story, that he didn't ask for a new contract when his last one came due late last year.
Donaldson was chief White House correspondent for the network from 1977-89, spanning the presidencies of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. He made his name for his reporting of the Carter and Reagan administrations as well as his yelling of questions to Reagan when the president left the White House.
In recent years, he has hosted programs on ABCNews.com and ABC News's ABC News Now.

Television anchors are definitely keeping up with the times. Boy, are they into change. Whether it's CBS, PBS or just Bs, their looks, chat, and clothes now grab more focus than their lead stories.
It's all about The Hair. Murder in Brooklyn, looting in Newark, robbery in Queens, fire in Manhattan. Then a shake of the loose hair that's almost, but not quite, in their eyes.
Homes lost, people crying, tragedy and devastation everywhere. Then a pushing back over the ear of that long, silky, shiny, ironed, heavily highlighted hair - always with one finger. The finger I'd like to give them is the middle one.

Lee Atwater, the wunderkind 1980s po litical operative who helped get George H.W. Bush elected, was guilty of smearing, fomenting racial antagonism and name-calling.
Or so says "Boogie Man," a documentary that uses against Atwater images of lynch mobs, decades-old racist comments of his onetime boss Strom Thurmond, and a clip of Bryant Gumbel calling him "the architect of the evil campaign."
Atwater, who died at age 40 of brain cancer, is most famous for an allegedly "racist" ad that illustrated 1988 presidential candidate Mike Dukakis' unfortunate habit of letting killers out of prison on furlough.
