A headlining set from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on the beach in their spiritual home of Asbury Park, N.J., sounds more like a fannish fever dream than an actual festival booking. But that performance is actually happening Sept. 15, on the second night of the sixth annual Sea.Hear.Now festival. The festival, which has already hosted names as big as Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters (and will feature Noah Kahan as headliner the night before Springsteen), was founded in 2018 by famed photographer and Jersey native Danny Clinch...

Back in the halcyon days of the early 2010s, Rob Schneider was perhaps best known for being a Saturday Night Live alum, one of Adam Sandler’s BFFs, and the star of the (underrated) The Hot Chick and the (completely fairly rated) Deuce Bigalow franchise. Today, however, he’s probably best known for being red-pilled as fuck.
Every once in a while, Schneider emerges in the public consciousness to remind us of his existence, either by saying something insane about vaccines or Joe Biden or gender-affirming care or appearing as...

Asbury Park’s Sea.Hear.Now festival kicked off its inaugural year in a big way last month, when Bruce Springsteen surprised fans by joining California punks Social Distortion onstage for a searing three-song set including “Ring of Fire.”

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton covers a trio of grisly horrors. The Toolbox Murders, Blood Harvest and A Cat in the Brain each feature a pop culture icon in a leading role. Hollywood actor Cameron Mitchell, oddball 1960s crooner Tiny Tim and the Italo horror director and all-round enfant terrible Lucio Fulci find themselves caught up in their own gory and disturbing splatter show. Perhaps unsurprisingly, all three films fell foul of the British Board of Film Classification at the time of their original release in the UK.

One production of The Vagina Monologues has just lost its star. Veteran actress Maria Conchita Alonso, who was set to star in the Spanish-speaking version of the popular play in San Francisco next month, stepped down from her role Friday, Jan. 17 for expressing political support in a Tea Party campaign video. After facing threats of boycotts and protests for backing California Gubernatorial candidate Tim Donnelly in a bilingual Internet campaign video released last week, Venezuelan-raised Alonso, 56, decided it was best if she stepped down from [...]...

There was a sad period in our lives last year, when we hit a dry spell in the Ryan Gosling sighting department. Silly man was off making movies and being with Eva Mendes or something instead of inadvertently posing for a thousand Tumblrs and starring in all of our dreams. That nightmare seems to be over, thank goodness, as we’ve been blessed with two trailers for upcoming movies, Gangster Squad’s release this weekend and, of course, his appearance on the red carpet of the premiere of Gangster Squad last night. We are pleased to report that the number of handsome faces he made as he escorted his mother to the movie were almost enough to make up for that earlier drought. All we need now is for him to go rescue someone on the street again and we’re all set.

A play-by-play review of all Star Trek Original Series episodes. We start with The Cage, the unaired first pilot for the show that was completed in early 1965, though never broadcast on television fully until 1988.

That’s the first thing you notice. It’s different.
And not in a good way.
This was made well before the series, and while it is still recognizable, it is also very different. The bridge is different:
And that’s just the first shot.
This is not what we would call advanced science fiction. In fact, Voyager watchers will understand what I mean when I say I expect Captain Proton to chase Satan’s Robot and Chaotica across the bridge any second, especially when they are having trouble telling the difference between a “meteroroid” and a radio wave to the point where Spock,...

When selecting a Halloween costume, there’s as many different approaches as there are non-friends’ Halloween parties you annually weasel your way out of attending: Do you go with something sexy? Something scary? Something just cool or funny or dumb or nostalgia-ey? It’s pretty much up to you. However, there’s one category of ready-made costumes that should never, Ever be worn: Costumes that are trying to be funny, sexy, or referential, but when you actually see them, they’re creepy as f**k. To help weed out this phenomenon, we’ve collected 50 examples from actual, current costume websites — from monstrously inaccurate characters to joke-costumes bordering on the rapey, here are this year’s 50 Most Unintentionally Terrifying Costumes: 50. Shrek Donkey Remember that scene in Shrek The Third when Buffalo Bill murders Donkey and wears his face? 49. Orangutan Orangutans look like this (and are friends with dogs). 1. Jeffrey, entering the Williams’s home, crossing a threshold that is a doorway. This is Sandy’s castle, guarded by her father the detective, who wears his gun holstered, even at home. Or is Jeffrey the detective? Or—more radically—is Sandy?
2. “Leaving the burning theater behind one begins to
ease into a new perspective. The stairway leads to
a doorway, the doorway to an alleyway, the alleyway
to another door, more stairs, another amber room
where one can forget again”
3. “He hacks desperately at the brambles and, as the hedge closes round him like the grasping flesh-raking claws of an old crone, imagines instead her dreams, sweet and hopeful and, above all, loving: loving him who is to come, slashing through the briars and scaling the castle walls to reach her bedside with his spellunbinding kiss.”
4. “Some people say that the girl detective is a natural blonde.

Jonathan Franzen's family epic, a new collection from Seamus Heaney, Philip Larkin's love letters, a memoir centred on tiny Japanese sculptures ... which books most excited our writers this year?
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
In Red Dust Road (Picador) Jackie Kay writes lucidly and honestly about being the adopted black daughter of white parents, about searching for her white birth mother and Nigerian birth father, and about the many layers of identity. She has a rare ability to portray sentiment with absolutely no sentimentality. Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns (Random House) is a fresh and wonderful history of African-American migration. Chang-rae Lee's The Surrendered (Little, Brown) is a grave, beautiful novel about people who experienced the Korean war and the war's legacy. And David Remnick's The Bridge (Picador) is a thorough and well-written biography of Barack Obama. The many Americans who believe invented biographical details about Obama would do well to read it.

When NBC's Trauma series was first announced, more than a few TV viewers were reminded of the 1970s Emergency! TV show. Trauma Executive Producer Dario Scardapane says that's not a coincidence.
Emergency! revolves around a Los Angeles team of devoted paramedics, doctors, nurses, and firemen who are quick to respond when there's an accident or disaster. The cast includes Robert Fuller, Julie London, Bobby Troup, Randolph Mantooth, Kevin Tighe, Tim Donnelly, Mike Stoker, Marco Lopez, Michael Norell, and Ron Pinkard.
The series ran for six seasons on NBC, from 1972 until 1977. It was cancelled after 122 installments but members of the cast returned in five made-for-tv movies between 1978 and 1979.
In two of the TV movies, some of the characters visit San Francisco and one of the movies involves two airplanes crashing over a residential neighborhood. Up until...

Chicago – If you’re like me, you forgot how totally weird the cult horror classic “The Toolbox Murders” actually is. Perhaps the dull, by-the-numbers Tobe Hooper remake (with the otherwise great Angela Bettis from “May”) warped our minds, but this is a trippy slasher film, a notable entry in the slasher genre now available in glorious B-movie High-Def for the first time.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
Reportedly based on a true story (aren’t they all?), “The Toolbox Murders” caused quite a stink in 1978 when it was released. It’s not that graphically violent, but it is easy to see what turned people off in a film that, for almost the entirety of its first act, consists of intercut shots of a power tool and a screaming woman being murdered by said tool. Watching a woman masturbate before being killed by a masked man with a nail gun is not for everyone.
