Apple TV +’s “Causeway” revolves around a U.S. soldier (Jennifer Lawrence) who suffers a traumatic brain injury while surviving in Afghanistan. Returning home, Lawrence’s Lynsey has a difficult time recovering physically, mentally, and emotionally. She finds a kindred spirit when she meets James (Brian Tyree Henry) who lost his leg in a car crash and is fighting his own demons
The well-received “Causeway” (Henry is nominated for a Gotham Independent Film Award for outstanding supporting performance) is the latest in the movie genre exploring the problems veterans have once they return from the battlefield.
The best and most beloved of these films is 1946’s “The Best Years of Our Lives,” directed by William Wyler which won seven Oscars. The haunting drama looks at three World War II vets — all dealing with trauma and severe injuries — who return home to discover they and their families have forever changed.

There’s always somebody new in the rat race trenches whose motto is ‘how to make friends and deceive people.’ Howard Duff’s photographer uses his camera to extort money from criminals while polishing his image as a grabber of Pulitzer-worthy news photos. But how long can he maintain his charade with mobsters Brian Donlevy and Lawrence Tierney, and how soon will his kissing partners Peggy Dow and Anne Vernon see through his lies? This efficient noir was the first feature directing job from the prolific Joe Pevney.

Today’s noir forecast is vice, kidnapping, murder, suicide, narcotics and a sleazy stolen baby racket! Kino’s third volume of Universal-International pix contains two seldom-screened quality urban noirs. Expect genuine dark themes in these sizable-budget location noirs filmed before Universal pulled most production back onto its one-size-fits-all backlot sets. Barbara Stanwyck dominates one show, while noir stalwarts Richard Conte and Dennis O’Keefe anchor the other two dramas, with dynamic showings by Coleen Gray, Edith Barrett, Peggy Dow, Jeanette Nolan, Meg Randall and especially Gale Storm.

As we enter the eighth week of the IMDb250 Project it’s becoming clear that the experience has completely changed our tastes, our appreciation and our knowledge of movies and movie making in general after only 20 films viewed each so far, that is something truly incredible for us personally and a real positive for attempting this project which could easily have become a chore watching so many movies in such a short period.
If you want to check out the previous weeks 1 – 7 click here for a rundown of our previous progress in the project but for now I bring you my next five films for the project of which three I had never seen before, one I haven’t seen since I was very very young and the final one is such a phenomenal a personal favourite movie of mine that I wish I could watch it again for the...

John Travolta is in negotiations to step into the shoes of Jimmy Stewart in the update of the 1950 film Harvey, a co-production between MGM and Miramax Films, sources confirmed. Based on the Pulitzer-winning Mary Chase play and updated by scribe Craig Mazin, the project will see Travolta star in the story of Elwood P. Dowd and the relationship he has with his best friend, an invisible 6-foot-tall rabbit. The project does not have a start date. In addition to Stewart, the original Harvey, directed by Henry Koster, also starred Josephine Hull, Peggy Dow, Charles Drake and Cecil Kellaway. The film landed Stewart an Oscar nomination for best actor, while Hill walked home with the statuette for supporting actress at the 1951 Academy Awards.
