Here’s the trailer for Hopeville, a film that screened and won an “honorable mention” at the Pan African Film Festival this year.
The South African film was directed by John Trengove and stars Desmond Dube, Jody Abrahams, Jonathan Pienaar, Terry Pheto, Themba Ndaba and Junior Singo.
Film synopsis:
Hopeville tells the story of Amos, a reformed alcoholic on a mission to forge a relationship with his estranged son, Themba. When father & son arrive in the dusty town of Hopeville, they discover a mean little community where apathy, fear & suspicion are the order of the day. When Amos decides to restore the public swimming pool so that his son can pursue a swimming career, he is met with scepticism and resistance from the town’s authorities and its inhabitants. Through patience, determination and above all courage, Amos’ selfless act ripples through Hopeville, inspiring others to take action and to do what they know is right.

Over the weekend, as most of us were reveling in Academy Awards thrills and chills, the nominations for another major movie award ceremony were announced, many miles, across the Atlantic Ocean; I’m referring to the 7-year old (this year) Africa Movie Academy Awards (Amaa), which will be held in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State (Nigeria) on Saturday, March 26, 2011.
This year’s nominations list boasts an even longer list of awards, compared to previous years, as the award ceremony continues to grow.
I’ll have to thoroughly scrub this list to highlight as many titles as I can – especially in the feature film categories, and I’ll do that with individual posts over the next week, or so. In the meantime, however, I’ll quickly point out those few titles that we’ve previously given ink to on this website, that are nominated for Amaa awards, including the following: in the Best Diaspora Feature,...

Hotel Rwanda (2004) Direction: Terry George Cast: Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo, Nick Nolte, Joaquin Phoenix, Desmond Dube, Neil McCarthy, Jean Reno Screenplay: Keir Pearson and Terry George Oscar Movies Recommended with Reservations Sophie Okonedo, Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda In the second quarter of 1994, while much of the world was gearing up to the World Cup to be held in Los Angeles, one of history's deadliest wholesale slaughters of human beings was taking place in Central Africa. Following the death of Rwanda's President Juvenal Habyarimana, an ethnic Hutu whose plane was shot down above the Kigali airport on April 6, 1994, the Hutu powers-that-be decided it was time to eliminate the Tutsi minority who were blamed for the crash. What followed in the next three months was an orgy of hackings and shootings throughout the country of 7.6 million people that left more than 800,000 dead: Mostly Tutsis, but also those Hutus [...]...

At the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO's president of programming, spoke about the future of No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Though it won't be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies.
No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube.
This weekend, Lombardo said, "We're talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we've love to do it. So it's alive."...

Best.Gay.Week.Ever? I don't think so. First, there was that Amazon.com kerfuffle where the online merchant began treating almost all books dealing with gay subject matter (even purely academic ones) as adult content — excluding many very worthy titles from their sales rankings system and standard searches.
One sad result? When you type in "homosexuality" as a search on Amazon, the results are skewed dramatically toward crap like this:
(Here's my bit of unsolicited advice to Amazon shoppers who might be interested in A Parent's Guide to Preventing Homosexuality: "Do everyone a favor and don't have kids!")
So what's going on here? On the surface, it sure looked like Amazon had adopted some sort of conservative policy to effectively bury positive gay representation on their site.
But then company spokespersons variously blamed it on a computer "glitch," and a "ham-fisted cataloging error" and made assurances they were working on a fix.

A TV series based in Africa is premiering this weekend on a premium cable television channel that isn't inundated with images of poverty and corruption. For All Of Us (Ianto) Jonesing For Some Torchwood Action
This is a big week for Torchwood fans.
The new Torchwood comic, “Captain Jack and the Selkie,” is finally being published in the U.S. Anticipation for this comic is particularly high, since it’s co-written by Captain Jack’s alter ego, John Barrowman, himself, along with his sister Carole (and I’ve got a terrific Q&A with Carole you’ll get to see in just a few).
Ordinarily, the publication of a comic might seem like small potatoes in the world of entertainment. But Torchwood fans have been craving any and all new Torchwood material for months. It’s been almost a year since the tearjerker Season Two finale aired in the U.S., and ever since, the blogosphere has been rampant with anxious speculation about Season Three. Sci-fi fans are such a bunch of nervous nellies about...

In this edition of Gays Of Our Lives, we introduce “In The Spotlight,” a new recurring feature where we examine in depth a particular series, character or storyline of gay interest.
First up, Casualty’s Dr. Toby De Silva, played by Matthew Needham, who bid goodbye this past week to the long running BBC medical series after a story arc during which the character struggled not only with his sexuality, but with his decision to become a doctor as well.
When Toby first joined the show in September 2007, his conflict over whether or not to be a doctor was quickly apparent as we learned that his overbearing parents had forced him into medicine. And while his relationships with women were rare, fleeting and usually disastrous, there hadn’t been much of an inkling regarding Toby being gay – at least not until he was found in bed with Ben Harding (Mark Letheren...

London -- Anthony Minghella and Sydney Pollack will receive posthumous executive producer credits as the BBC moves forward with its six-part TV series based on Alexander McCall-Smith's "The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency."
The series, officially announced Monday, continues the vision of Minghella, whose feature-length adaptation of the first book premiered to huge success in the U.K. shortly after his death in March. Pollack, whose Mirage Enterprises -- a co-venture with Minghella -- co-produced the telefilm, died two months later.
Filming has begun on location in Botswana on six 60-minute episodes, which will chronicle the poignant and amusing adventures of Precious Ramotswe, the proprietor of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana.
Grammy winner Jill Scott will reprise her role as Botswana's first female sleuth and be joined by Anika Noni Rose, Desmond Dube, Lucian Msamati and Paterson Joseph.
