Steve Dayan has won the Secretary-Treasurer job at Local 399 Hollywood by 299 votes over long-term incumbent Leo Reed. In election results released today, Dayan received 1,308 votes to Reed’s 1,009 in the union race. Reed had held the Sec-Treasurer post for 24 years — eight three-year terms. The battle between the two was bitter as Reed dismissed Dayan in July as Local 399′s Business Agent after he announced his intention to run against the incumbent. Dayan had been Biz Agent since 2000. The challenger went after Reed by announcing a need for “new leadership with fresh innovative ideas that move us forward together” in his campaign literature. Dayan’s Members First slate took the Local Presidency and three trustee gigs. Ed Duffy and Rosie Falcon of Reed’s slate took the VP and Recording Secretary jobs. Teamsters Local 399 reps more than 4,500 location managers, drivers, casting directors and animal wranglers in the La County area. Here...

Despite warnings it would drive away the entertainment industry, the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved filming rental rates for downtown's recently opened Grand Park that are significantly higher than those at many other parks throughout Los Angeles.
They voted 4-1 -- with Supervisor Don Knabe voting no -- to charge producers about $1,920 to $12,000 to shoot movies, television shows and commercials at the park for up to 14 hours. For still photographers, the cost is $1,600 to $4,000 for six hours.
On top of those amounts, producers and photographers would have to pay for any labor that county workers perform at the Grand Park related to the shoot, such as maintenance and security.
Edward Duffy, vice president and business agent for Teamsters Local 399, which represents location managers, casting directors, drivers and other entertainment industry workers, yelled at the board from his seat in the audience and almost walked out in frustration.

On Nov. 7, five casting directors in the Los Angeles area received death threats via their office telephones. The recipients reached out to Teamsters Local 399 and were encouraged by the union to alert security personnel at the studios where they work and the local police. Teamsters business representative Ed Duffy, who confirmed to Back Stage that the threats had occurred, sent a mass email to members of the L.A. casting community warning them of the phone calls and encouraging anyone else who has been threatened to come forward. On Monday, Duffy was contacted by a sixth casting director who had been threatened."It's a pretty low blow to do something like that to these casting directors," Duffy said. "Whether it's a reality or not, it has to be taken seriously."Duffy did not reveal the names or workplaces of those who were threatened. He reiterated that any casting directors who...
