Who says you can’t laugh and win Oscars, too?
In a stunning year for cinema, the candidates for the coveted best picture category are overflowing with prime comedic endeavors that surpass their dramatic counterparts. From a toy doll to an author with a triumphant “Black book” to a reverse Frankenstein tale that shows a whole lot of sex, the Academy has an opportunity to invite the softer side of cinema to its ceremony.
This year, it’s hard to imagine an Oscar picture lineup that won’t include four of this year’s Globe nominees: “American Fiction” (MGM), “Barbie” (Warner Bros.), “The Holdovers” (Focus Features) and “Poor Things” (Searchlight Pictures).
When it comes to “Barbie,” when analyzing the competitive field, there’s a real possibility for Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy about the beloved toy doll to rake in upwards of 14 Oscar nominations, which would tie for the most in...

May December, Natalie Portman as Elizabeth Berry. Cr. François Duhamel / Courtesy of Netflix The subject matter of the new film May December is both scandalous and disturbing — it’s loosely based upon the real-life story of a teacher who seduced, fell in love with, and had children with one of her middle school students. Natalie Portman stars as an actress who is set to play the teacher in a movie; along the way, as she gets to know the teacher and other people involved with the story, she becomes more involved than she expected in their lives. Portman said the story — and the character — were both eye-opening for her. Viewers who assume Todd Haynes’ May December is a thinly veiled revisit of the Mary Kay Letourneau story aren’t exactly wrong, nor are those who flip on the Netflix movie hoping for something a bit tawdry and high camp. But those viewers also play right into Haynes’ hands, as his movie is a more thoughtful look at the complex individuals behind the tabloid fodder and the flimsy line between understanding and exploitation.
Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) is an actress who arrives in a Savannah neighborhood to study Gracie (Julianne Moore), a woman who, years back, slept with her teenage coworker, Joe (Charles Melton), went to prison, had his baby and married him. May December, Natalie Portman as Elizabeth Berry. Cr. François Duhamel / Courtesy of Netflix Loosely based on a real-life story, May December has won critical acclaim but has also been called “deeply uncomfortable” for the way it handles the story of a middle-aged woman who seduces a young boy, later having his children. In the film, Natalie Portman plays an actress who’s researching the “real-life subject” of a movie about the taboo romance. Portman credited the film’s screenwriter, Samy Burch, with creating a movie and a character she couldn’t resist playing. May December, the latest from director Todd Haynes, inspired by an infamous scandal, goes to some mighty dark places. Julianne Moore is Gracie Atherton, a suburban woman who ignited a media frenzy when, at 36, she had an affair with seventh-grader Joe Yoo (Riverdale’s Charles Melton). She’s now married to Yoo and living away from the spotlight in Savannah, but her sordid past comes back to haunt her when actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman) visits the pair to research her role as Gracie for a movie. “As Elizabeth observes and studies Gracie and her world, and gets to know Joe, her reliability as a narrator begins to falter,” notes Haynes of the film, based in part on the real-life 1997 case involving the late suburban Seattle teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and the sixth-grade student she had an affair with, and eventually married. The official trailer for Todd Haynes’ upcoming film, May December, explores a twisted personal drama, reminiscent of the real-life scandal between former teacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her 13-year-old student, Vili Fualaau.
The film stars Natalie Portman as Elizabeth Berry, an actress who travels to Maine to spend time with the real-life character she’ll be portraying in an upcoming film, a disgraced former teacher who made tabloid headlines for her relationship with a young teen student.
Julianne Moore plays the teacher, Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who has since married and had kids with the now-grown student, Joe Yoo (Charles Melton), having given birth to one of their children while she was imprisoned for her crimes against the then-minor.

Temuera Morrison is 60 years old. Ming-Na Wen is 58. They are not at the age where many actors would be asked to play an action hero. Yet here both are on The Book of Boba Fett, her chasing assassins across rooftops in last week’s series premiere, and him robbing a train in this week’s episode. Nice work if you can get it — and if you can do it as well as these two can.

A scene from Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit. Photo by Francois Duhamel. Courtesy of Annapurna Pictures (c)
In Detroit, director Kathryn Bigelow spotlights the civil unrest that shook Detroit in the summer of 1967, and particularly the infamous events that took place at the Algiers Motel, when police abused a group of mostly black men and killed three. One would have hoped that 50 years on, we would be looking back those events and noting how far we have come. Sadly, that is not the case.
The award-winning director of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty tackles an event that took place 50 years ago yet seems timely now, in the light of Michael Brown and Ferguson, and other recent incidents of police violence and public outrage. It is certainly a worthy subject but the film itself has some flaws. Like in Zero Dark Thirty, Bigelow takes awhile to bring the subject into focus,...

Rules Don’T Apply opens as a boy-meets-girl tale set in classic Hollywood, an introduction suggesting a light-hearted romance, maybe even romantic comedy, which is how the film is being promoted. And Rules Don’T Apply is that boy-meets-girl tale at first, until Howard Hughes shows up, played by writer/director Warren Beatty. Then the story takes a darker turn and switches from Hollywood romance with contemporary Woody Allen flavor to a Howard Hughes biopic. It is as if Beatty the actor hijacks Beatty the director’s film.
Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins), a small-town beauty queen raised with a strong Baptist faith, arrives in Hollywood with a movie contract from Howard Hughes in hand and her mother (Annette Bening) in tow.

Written and Directed by Warren Beatty, Rules Don’t Apply is a film in love with film, and hopeful that looking back at a different era, and a different era of filmmaking, is something people will still connect with today.
The movie is overloaded with talent, but centers on a young actress in the ’50s (Lily Collins) who finds herself working for Howard Hughes (Beatty).
The general plot is covered in the trailer, and fairly obvious, but more importantly the film looks to be a fantastic homage that simultaneously uses the most outlandish character to highlight an outlandish era/industry, and showcases the elements of film that turned so many into truly committed cinephiles.
The film hits November 23rd, and also stars: Alden Ehrenreich, Ed Harris, Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin, and many more.
Take a look, and let us know what you think of this one.

Regency Enterprises and 20th Century Fox have released a new trailer for the Romantic Dramedy Rules Don’T Apply, written, directed and produced by 15 time Academy Award nominee Warren Beatty.
An aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire (Warren Beatty), who they work for.
It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress.

The brand new trailer and poster for DreamWorks Pictures’ upcoming movie The Hundred-foot Journey starring Helen Mirren are here.
In The Hundred-foot Journey, Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) is a culinary ingénue with the gastronomic equivalent of perfect pitch. Displaced from their native India, the Kadam family, led by Papa (Om Puri), settles in the quaint village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France.
Filled with charm, it is both picturesque and elegant – the ideal place to settle down and open an Indian restaurant, the Maison Mumbai. That is, until the chilly chef proprietress of Le Saule Pleureur, a Michelin starred, classical French restaurant run by Madame Mallory (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren), gets wind of it.
Her icy protests against the new Indian restaurant a hundred feet from her own escalate to all out war between the two establishments – until Hassan’s passion for French haute cuisine and for Mme.

’12 Years a Slave’: 2013 movie about slavery in the American South is Best Film of the year for some U.S. critics’ groups (photo: Chiwetel Ejiofor in ’12 Years a Slave’) Directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave remains one of the favorites — perhaps the favorite 2013 release — among U.S.-based critics’ groups. Below is the list of winners from four of those: the Austin Film Critics Association, the Southeastern Film Critics Association, the Florida Film Critics Circle, and the Las Vegas Film Critics Society. Their winners were announced within the last week or so. McQueen’s slavery drama was the top choice of three of the aforementioned groups. The one exception was the Austin Film Critics, who went for Spike Jonze’s Her, in which Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with a computer with Scarlett Johansson’s voice. In the acting categories, 12 Years a Slave‘s...

Two-time Academy Award®–winner Emma Thompson and fellow double Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks topline Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks, inspired by the extraordinary, untold backstory of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen.
When Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins,” he made them a promise—one that he didn’t realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie Dimaso (Bradley Cooper). Chicago – So there I was at a packed awards consideration screening for Stephen Daldry’s latest prestige-filled tearjerker. Though a few of my fellow colleagues were grumbling about the grim task of sitting through more Daldry Oscar bait, my heart was filled with goodwill. I loved Daldry’s feature debut, “Billy Elliot,” and had plenty of favorable things to say about “The Hours” and “The Reader.”
Yet it was only 10 minutes into “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” that I began to wonder if the projectionist was playing a practical joke on us. Surely this picture couldn’t have been the work of a three-time Oscar nominee. On the occasions when it became too painful to keep my eyes focused on the screen, I glanced at the expressions of my peers, which looked like outtakes from the “Springtime for Hitler” sequence in “The Producers.” When the horrible reality sunk in that the...

Robert Downey Jr, Iron Man 2 The Judge is set to star Robert Downey Jr, who will also produce the film alongside Susan Downey and director David Dobkin. Based on a story (or rather, original screenplay) by Gran Torino's Nick Schenk, The Judge follows a lawyer who learns that his estranged father, a judge suffering from Alzheimer’s, may have committed a murder. Bill Dubuque is to work on the screenplay. When exactly The Judge should start filming (if ever?) remains unclear. Downey Jr has Iron Man 3 and Dubuque will next work on The Headhunter's Calling and The Accountant. Dobkin, for his part, has his Arthur & Lancelot to work on. In other news, Amy Brenneman and Jess Weixler have joined Annette Bening, Robin Williams, and Ed Harris in The Look of Love. In the film, which seems to have elements found in movies as disparate as Alfred Hitchcock...

Sandra Bullock, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Kate Beckinsale/Underworld Awakening vs. Jean Dujardin/The Artist: Box Office Directed by Anthony Hemingway and executive-produced by Stars Wars' George Lucas, Red Tails opened at no. 2 with an acceptable $6.02 million on Friday, Jan. 20, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Its per-theater average was a good $2,398. Though certainly not a bad opening for a socially conscious period drama lacking a major star attraction — apart from Lucas' name, that is — Red Tails' performance seems considerably less impressive when one factors in that it cost a reported $58 million. And that movies such as Red Tails, dealing with American issues of interest to (some) Americans, don't travel very well abroad unless they have a star of Leonardo DiCaprio- or Johnny Depp-caliber to make it more attractive to international audiences. Despite all the awards-season buzz, Tate Taylor's The Help,...

Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron and co. are absolutely ‘glee-ful’ about Eat, Pray, Love. Does their enthusiasm make You want to see the film when it hits theaters Aug. 13?
The Glee cast can sing, they can dance – and they can review movies, too! And what better way to earn brownie points with bossman Ryan Murphy then to say his new flick rocks?
“Secret screening of @EatPrayLove yesterday was Awesome. Made me want to get on a plane to Italy for a big bowl of pasta,” Jenna Ushkowitz tweeted after the August 1 screening.
Dianna Agron agreed with her castmate, writing, “Saw an advanced screening last night. So proud of Ryan.”
Even though Eat, Pray, Love is geared toward women, the guys said they loved it, too.
Said Kevin McHale, “Seeing Eat Pray Love was like eating the best cake ever. Still filled with it’s amazingness,...
