Recipient of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award (presented to a writer for
meritorious contributions to baseball writing) in 1995.
He was a captain in the Army Air Forces during WWII.
Sports writer for The New York Times for 51 years; author of a dozen
sports biographies and books on sports history.
He started his journalism career at the Newark (NJ) Evening News in
1947. He also worked in radio before going to the NY Times, where he
started covering sports in 1964.
His sports writing earned him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown, NY.
He has been writing for the New York Times since
