Inspired by the real-life catastrophic Halifax explosion of 1917, Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby’s Oscar nominated animation short The Flying Sailor tells the story of a seaman whose life flashes before his eyes when he finds himself catapulted into the air in the wake of the blast. It’s a poignant film that takes a darkly comical stance on the existential circumstance the sailor finds himself in. Through a blend of 2D, 3D and live action techniques, Forbis and Tilby impressively bring their tale to life with plenty of whimsy but also a rich melancholic contemplation. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that The Flying Sailor just won The Short Film Jury Award: Animation at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and marks the pair’s third Oscar nomination to date. Dn spoke with the co-directors, in the run up to the prestigious awards ceremony, about their career-long partnership, the...

Filmmakers Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis were inspired to make The Flying Sailor from a small blurb about a sailor they found while researching the Halifax explosion of 1917. As they were captivated by the flight aspect, their animated short takes a slowed down look at life flashing before a man’s eyes as his “balletic” movements are underscored by a beautiful piano. The animation style blends 2D and 3D elements, which Forbis says created a “cartoony” opening sequence that contrasts the tragedy of the situation.
Deadline: How did this short come about?
Wendy Tilby: The inspiration came about 20 years ago when we happened to be in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the east coast of Canada. We went to the Maritime Museum where there was a display all about the Halifax explosion and among the many things that we looked at, there was a very small blurb that told the...

Sometimes studios make baffling decisions. Like the one Universal made back in 2011, when they decided not to move forward with an epic adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novella At the Mountains of Madness, which Guillermo del Toro was going to direct with Tom Cruise in the lead role and James Cameron producing. The problem: del Toro intended to make an R-rated film. Universal wanted a PG-13. So the movie wasn’t made at all. Over the years, del Toro has held on to the hope that he can get a different version of At the Mountains of Madness off the ground at some point – a version that would be smaller and weirder. While we wait to see if that’s ever going to happen, the filmmaker decided to share some CGI test footage that was created for the scrapped version of At the Mountains of Madness, footage that gives an...

This week, Guillermo del Toro’s gothic-horror-romance Crimson Peak will haunt movie theaters across the land. It joins the unique crowd of del Toro projects that makes it to the screen instead of vanishing into development oblivion. Del Toro is always cooking something up, and his name is frequently being thrown around for various films that never quite materialize: he’s been working on-again/off-again on a Haunted Mansion film; then there’s the DC Comics adaptation Justice League Dark. Pacific Rim 2 keeps jumping back and forth between being in development and being put on hold. The filmmaker was even going to direct the first of The Hobbit films before things changed, and we ended up with a bloated trilogy filled with nonsense. But the holy grail of unmade Guillermo del Toro films is his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.

If you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's work, specifically of his story At the Mountains of Madness, you're going to love this this photo of the original notes and sketch he did, showing the beasts from the story including descriptions. As you can see, the struggling writer used an envelope to help him in his efforts to shape his story. This gives us an idea of what exactly Lovecraft envisioned for his monsters.
The story was written in 1931 and was published in the pulp magazine Astounding Stories in 1936. The image above comes from Slate, which points out the following,
The sketch on the right side of this page of notes, with its annotations (“body dark grey”; “all appendages not in use customarily folded down to body”; “leathery or rubbery”) represents Lovecraft working out the specifics of an Elder Thing’s anatomy. As Lovecraft’s narrator was a scientist, the...

The genre's busiest and most prolific filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro, is a tenacious fighter who should be respected if only for that. Months after the kibosh was put on his adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness, the man is still keeping the fires burning, and god bless him for it!
In an interview with The Playlist, Del Toro says he's going to take another crack at finding a home for the story. This is great news indeed, especially since last year he expressed concern over parallels between Prometheus and At the Mountains of Madness. "I saw it finally and... yes, there are things in common, but, you know, screw it. Lovecraft was there first," he told the outlet, adding, "I'm going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss. We're gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio's] interested.

Guillermo del Toro's dream project At the Mountains of Madness isn't dead! He's not giving up on it yet. In a recent interview with The Playlist he says that Tom Cruise is still attached, and that he's going to try to get it made one more time.
I'm going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss. We're gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio's] interested. Yeah, Tom is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He's been such a great ally of the project.
At one point he said that he didn't want to do it because Prometheus looked way too close to what he wanted to do, but after he saw Prometheus he was no longer worried about the similarities,
I saw it finally and.

It sounds as if Guillermo del Toro still has come cinematic mountain climbing on his agenda as the visionary director shared some interesting tidbits on the official status of his version of the H.P. Lovecraft tale At the Mountains of Madness.
“I think we may still make it. When I’m brave enough to go and see Prometheus, I’ll know,” Del Toro revealed. “But for now, I don’t know. We are all nothing but human beings. I go to the theatre, I buy my ticket for Prometheus and I go and see something else because I’m afraid. I’m not a mental entity, I am also emotional because the ideas are similar, from what I’ve heard, and I’ll see it next week, I promise!”

Tom Cruise has signed up to star in Guillermo Del Toro's big screen adaptation of the Hp Lovecraft si-fi novella At The Mountains of Madness. He's set to play geology professor William Dyer, a scientist-explorer who discovered a dangerous secret hidden in the ruins of an alien city during an expedition to the Antarctic. Del Toro has long been keen on bringing the story to the screen as a 3D film with James Cameron originally attached as producer.

It has recently been revealed by producer Don Murphy that Tom Cruise has been tapped for the lead in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, set to start filming this June. The film has been long awaited by horror fans and fans of the writer, is being co-produced by James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), and is going to be released in 3D. As a rabid fan of Lovecraft’s work, I have to wonder if this is the right choice.
It’s not that I hate Cruise, but I’ve never been a big fan of the man. In fact, there’s little before 1994’s Interview with the Vampire that I actually consider worth watching (I will admit, one of these days, I do plan on giving Legend a second chance). A recent report that the Knight & Day actor will play the lead role in director Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film -- based on the popular Lovecraft novel -- is proven premature. At the Mountains of Madness is a 1931 horror novella written by H.P. Lovecraft. It entails the story of geologist William Dyer's expedition into Antarctica. While there, his group discovers the remains of ancient lifeforms. What follows is an adventure in which Dyer discovers the secrets of life itself, the downfall of a civilization and an entity which, upon sight, causes one to lose sanity. Though only rumored for the role, Tom Cruise was reported to be officially onboard to star in the film which has Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) attached as the director and James Cameron (Avatar) as one of the...

It may seem hard to believe, but despite the fact that James Cameron officially came on board [1] last year to help Guillermo del Toro bring At the Mountains of Madness to the big screen in 3-D, the project still has not been officially greenlit. The movie remains in pre-production over at Universal as del Toro continues to tweak the screenplay with his writing partner Matthew Robbins. Right now it looks like the next big step will be to settle on a cast, and back in September there were reports [2] that the studio and director disagreed over who should play the lead role of William Dyer. Now it's sounding like del Toro might have won out with his top choice... and who better to capture a descent into Lovecraftian madness than Tom Cruise? According to reports, producer James Cameron and director Guillermo del Toro are in pre-production on a 3D Universal Pictures adaptation of author H.P. Lovecraft’s horror novella "At The Mountains Of Madness".

Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’S Labrynth) announced in a recent interview with the L.A. Times that he is hard at work on developing H.P. Lovecraft’s classic novella, ‘At the Mountains of Madness’ into a movie. Guillermo del Toro had a sit down with Universal executives and presented them with his models and concepts for the movie that reportedly will be shot in 3D. With a completed script, it is possible that filming could begin as early as summer 2011, and James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) is also reportedly taking an active role in the production of the film. ‘At the Mountains of Madness’ is a classic Lovecraftian tale about geologist William Dyer who leads a team of scientists on an epic adventure to Antarctica. There the explorers confront creatures from the depths of the darkness that are so horrific that they twist and contort the men’s perception of reality.

James Cameron'S luminescent-but-lethal jungle world will get you one way or another.
In case you missed Avatar the first time round, or wanted to see more, a Special Edition that's nine minutes longer is now in cinemas, but it doesn't end there.
A new Blu-ray is coming in November with the original theatrical release, the extended special edition and yet another cut, this time with 16 minutes of extra footage.
The reinstated scenes were raw and unfinished so the studio has spent millions getting all the special effects added.
Cameron says that after this next Blu-ray release there will be no going back and tinkering with the movie again.
He told Total Film: "I'm not going back to this. There's no revisiting this downstream and I don't see it coming back into theatres at all unless 20 years from now they want to do something and I'm a doddering old guy that can't stop them.

Hot on the heels of announcing his next film will be the long-gestating adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, Guillermo Del Toro may already be running into friction with Universal regarding cast. According to Collider, sources say the fan-favorite director has his eye on Tom Cruise for the lead, while the studio has their tentacles wrapped around future Professor X James McAvoy.
While this is all rumor, with pre-production on the film only just begun, the story raises some questions, chiefly being the age of the two actors. Having some familiarity with both the story and an older draft of the script, I can say that the main character of William Dyer is written for a young man of 25, perfect for McAvoy, who toplined Universal's hit Wanted. Professor Lake, the driven scientific leader of Mountain's ill-fated artic expedition, is a middle-aged character and far more appropriate for Cruise.

Both James McAvoy and Tom Cruise are said to be in contention for the lead role in Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novella "At the Mountains of Madness" reports Collider.
Apparently McAvoy has emerged as Universal's top choice, whereas del Toro wants Tom Cruise. Either would play geologist William Dyer, the leader of a scientific expedition to Antarctica who comes upon the ruins of an ancient civilisation on a massive plateau amongst gigantic mountains.
The James Cameron-produced adaptation is not scheduled to begin filming until the second half of next year, thus either actor could sign onto the film.

Few days ago we wrote about Guillermo Del Toro and his involvement in a new The Haunted Mansion movie, so you already know that he will be in charge for writing and producing the whole thing. But no directing!
Today, we’re here to solve the mystery, and to report that del Toro’s next project will be an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness.
And, guess what! The film will be produced by James Cameron. So, yes, it will be shot in 3D!
Del Toro has long been fascinated with H.P. Lovecraft’s seminal story, which “is written in first-person perspective by the geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University.

According to reports, Guillermo del Toro will direct the developing 3D feature "At the Mountains of Madness" , to be produced by James Cameron, based on the novella by horror author H.P. Lovecraft.
The sci fi, supernatural horror story was originally written in serialized form for the February to March 1931 issues of pulp magazine title "Astounding Stories", narrated by fictional geologist 'William Dyer', a professor from 'Miskatonic University' who tries to warn against an upcoming scientific expedition to Antarctica.
On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas including the remains of fourteen ancient life forms, completely unknown to science and unidentifiable as either plants or animals.
Because of their resemblance to creatures of myth mentioned in the 'Necronomicon', they are dubbed the 'Elder Things'.

It's official: Guillermo del Toro has no plans to sleep over the next decade. I don't think there is another director working right now who has more potential projects on his plate, and still he's adding more. I guess he can't say no, although in this case you can't blame him as it looks like one of his long time passion projects is finally coming to a head. Last week's announcement about The Haunted Mansion [1] seems to have been met with a wave of indifference, but this should get a few more people excited. Universal may have finally given him the go ahead on his proposed adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. What's more, it will be shot in 3-D, and James Cameron is on board as a producer! The story centers on geologist William Dyer, who discovers an ancient evil during a scientific expedition to Antarctica in the 1930s.

Ever since Guillermo del Toro left The Hobbit, the big question on everyone's mind has been... what will he be directing next!? That question has now been answered, and I think you're going to be happy with it. Del Toro said he would announce his next project shortly after Comic-Con, that it would be a horror film, that it would be shot in 3D and here it is!
Del Toro will be directing an adaptation of the Hp Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness. The film will be shot in 3D for Universal Pictures, and the other big news is that James Cameron is attached to the film project as a producer.
Del Toro's been talking about making this film for some time now, and now it looks like he's ready to jump on board the project and get it into production. At The Mountains of Madness! I can't help...
