The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which were announced on December 21, 2022. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 24. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12.

“Batman was always something I was into,” reveals visual effects supervisor Dan Lemmon about “The Batman.” For our recent webchat he continues, “He’s in many ways the most relatable superhero. He’s the one’s most connected to the world that I understand. It was a dream project” Watch the full exclusive video interview above.
“The Batman” is a new iteration of the iconic caped crusader directed by Matt Reeves. In it, Batman solves riddles and uncovers corruption in Gotham City to foil a serial killer targeting politicians. Lemmon says, “Our director wanted this to be the most realistic and grounded Batman to date. It was about keeping it gritty and getting it back to the dark noir detective story. We wanted to make something that was different from a Marvel or some other DC movies, to keep it as familiar to our real world as possible. The danger is,...

Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 Ves Awards, which were announced today.
Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010.

Having already explored the vast photoreal toolsets of Ilm for “Cloverfield” and Weta Digital for the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, director Matt Reeves eagerly implemented their latest advancements for his vision of “The Batman” as a grungy, neo-noir detective thriller. He principally utilized Ilm’s fledgling StageCraft LED-wall volume system (developed for “The Mandalorian”) to add unfinished skylines and Weta’s own virtual production prowess to complete the rainy Batmobile freeway chase with Penguin (Colin Farrell).
The key was seamlessly integrating the VFX around production designer James Chinlund’s reimagined Gotham as a Gothic nightmare and cinematographer Greig Fraser’s ’70s inspired dark lighting (“The French Connection” meets “All the President’s Men”).
“Matt wanted the Gotham cityscapes to be unique and special but still feel real,” said production VFX supervisor Dan Lemmon (the “Apes” trilogy), who works at Weta. “He wanted the forms, architecture, and the fabric of the...

In the recent Avengers: Endgame, Thor sported a radical new look that was a far cry from Chris Hemsworth’s typically ripped appearance. According to co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the God of Thunder’s latest design was intended as a reflection of his grief and guilt, following on from his failure to prevent the snap. And going by recent comments from Industrial Light and Magic VFX supervisor Russell Earl, the character’s Big Lebowski-style makeover was very much a group effort.
Speaking to ComicBook.com, Earl recalled how Legacy Effects provided the prosthetic, before his own team made a few final adjustments:
“That was a great prosthetic. He was wearing a prosthetic that I believe Legacy did for his suit. There was a big scene down the back that we cleaned up and then we just cleaned it up in places where it didn’t quite bend right at the elbows and shoulders.

The introduction of Mark Ruffalo’s Smart Hulk was the great surprise and the visual effects highlight of “Avengers: Endgame.” As Bruce Banner explained in the delightful diner scene before dabing for his selfie: “For years, I treated The Hulk like he’s some kind of disease, something to get rid of. Then I started looking at him as the cure. Eighteen months in the gamma lab, I put the brains and the brawn together. And now look at me: Best of both worlds.”
Thus, it was imperative to pull off the right combination of brains and brawn through the performance-captured animation. The task fell primarily to go-to Hulk specialists Industrial Light & Magic, with Framestore handling the Avengers hangar sequence for the time travel testing. Going off of Marvel concept art, a new twist on the Professor Hulk hybrid from the comics, Ilm took some online footage of Ruffalo and...

Many of us were surprised when Best Picture contender “Black Panther” was completely snubbed for its visual effects by the Oscars and the Visual Effects Society Awards. For a rare superhero blockbuster in the conversation for top prizes, visual effects seems like the strangest field not to nominate it in. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has actually never won an Oscar for its visual effects, but there is still another hope to make history this year: “Avengers: Infinity War.”
It does make sense that “Infinity War” made the cut instead of “Black Panther.” While “Panther” had better reviews and more overall awards appeal, “Infinity War” had showier effects with dozens of super-powered characters and alien locations, plus the motion capture performance by Josh Brolin as the villainous Thanos. And perhaps Ves and Oscar voters felt it would have been redundant to nominate both Marvel movies, especially since the “Panther” characters and...

It’s a very competitive group of films vying for a visual effect nomination this year, but one movie that is almost certain to land in the final five is the already shortlisted “Avengers: Infinity War.” With so many characters from so many different Marvel Cinematic Universe films, it was a huge challenge for the massive VFX team under Visual Effects Supervisors Dan DeLeeuw, Kelly Port, Russell Earl and Special Effects Supervisor Dan Sudick.

“We knew from the beginning that this was going to be very big and very special,” says “Avengers: Infinity War” visual effects supervisor Kelly Port. The effects veteran knew he had his work cut out for him with this highly anticipated superhero epic. This VFX team is now on the official Academy short list for voter consideration. Watch our exclusive video interview with Port and fellow VFX supervisors Dan DeLeeuw and Russell Earl above.
See Josh Brolin could make Oscar history with his motion-capture performance in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
Perhaps the greatest challenge for the effects team was creating the character of Thanos (Josh Brolin), a hulking purple baddie hell-bent on wiping out half the universe’s population by gathering the powerful Infinity Stones. DeLeeuw and his team wanted to incorporate as much of Brolin’s features as possible into the original Marvel design of the character. “A lot of...

It’s been 10 years since Robert Downey Jr. suited up as Tony Stark in the iconic Mark 1 armor in “Iron Man.” Back then the VFX had to look good to win over CG skeptic Jon Favreau, but Industrial Light & Magic stepped up and earned the first of eight Oscar nominations for Marvel.
Eighteen movies later, with the record-breaking “Avengers: Infinity War,” Marvel continued its superhero and box office dominance, while their photo-real VFX have never been better, advancing cutting edge modeling, shading, lighting, rendering, facial and motion capture, and explosive simulations.
Who knows? Maybe Marvel will even earn its first VFX Oscar for Thanos, the badass, unstoppable star of “Infinity War,” performed with great intensity and inner turmoil by Josh Brolin, and brilliantly mo-capped and animated by Digital Domain and Weta Digital (for the third-act Titan battle). That would be a fitting culmination. So, in honor of the McU’s 10th anniversary,...

The airport battle at the heart of "Captain America: Civil War" was conceived as a choreographed ballet by the Russo brothers: Captain America (Chris Evans) has gone rogue and tries to get on the Quinjet, but he's met by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and the two teams face off, each with their uber objectives. But then this splinters off into mini-beats with Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) trying to kill Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) just trying to fit in and becoming the wild cards. Read More: 6 Ways to Write a Marvel Movie, According to the Screenwriters of 'Captain America: Civil War' "We were trying to figure out who's fighting who, the strengths and weaknesses of each superhero, but it's a non-lethal fight ,so what can we do to show that?" offered Industrial Light & Magic VFX supervisor Russell Earl. They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.
The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.
Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.
Need some help in that office Oscar pool or at the party you’re throwing at home? Wamg is here to help.

Good Morning Oscar fans! Today is nomination day!

Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.
Let’s get right to the big shockers – No Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature or Life Itself in Best Documentary Feature.
Also missing among the presumed nominees were Ava DuVernay (Selma, directing), Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, directing), Jennifer Aniston (Cake, best actress), David Oyelowo (Selma, best actor), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, best actor), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, best actor), Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:
Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.

The Best Visual Effects is often the place where the Academy recognizes what it is frequently accused of avoiding elsewhere: mainstream spectacle. Blockbusters reign in this category, at least at the nomination stage, with fantasy films, franchises and other money-makers always featuring prominently. The branch also has its specific fetishes, at least historically (talking animals immediately jumps to mind), though, in recent years, it has seemingly been all 3D, all the time. While some names are "favorites" of the branch (John Frazier, Joe Letteri), this branch is hardly the most insular and tends to be more concerned about the work on display. We will receive a hint of the way they are...

Awards season may have come and gone, but sci-fi fans still have something to look forward to with today's announcement of the Saturn Award nominees.
The awards, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, recognize excellence in these genres, which are often underrepresented at other awards shows.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, this year's big movie contenders are "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2," "Hugo," tied with 10 nominations each.
A number of the movies scoring big have been commercial successes but have not received awards show love, including J.J. Abrams' $260-million grossing monster hit "Super 8," which nabbed eight nominations, and "Captain America: The First Avenger," which earned nearly $400 million worldwide, coming in with six.
One of the most surprising cross-genre hits is Woody Allen's romantic comedy "Midnight in Paris," which took home the award for Best Original Screenplay at Sunday's Oscars, in...

it's not Tuesday but it's time for a Top Ten anyway... as this is yesterday's news already!
AMPAS used to hide their membership roster like the vote tallies but in the information age, they've opened up. Now we get to see the whole list of new invitees each year. I wonder how they keep they're membership around 6,000 given how many people they invite annual. Maybe enough people reject the offer, stop paying their dues, or pass from this mortal coil each year to balance it out?
You can read the full list of recipients at Indiewire, but as is the Film Experience tradition, we like to pinpoint the newest (potential) members whose future ballots we'd most like to see. So let's have at it.
New Academy Member Ballots We Most Want To See

They're two separate people but we'd like to imagine them filling out their ballots together inbetween sets.
