MaryAnn’s quick take… There’s genuine fun here, but the humor is cynical, the heroics are tinged with regret, and it’s all delivered with a cold smack of — yes — political relevance. I’m “biast” (pro): massive Star Wars fan, don’t even get me started
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Damn.
Did we think, at the end of the very first Star Wars movie, that Luke Skywalker was a hero? He was nothing. Nothing.
Did we think Luke Skywalker was a hero? What he did was nothing to what we see here.
Okay, not nothing. But, as Rogue One reveals with brutal clarity, Luke’s lucky Force-assisted like–bulls-eying–womprats bombing run at the Death Star was only the final link in a very long chain of people doing way more brave and way more daring things.

The Force is strong in Pyramid International.
Three months out from the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the outlet has premiered a batch of beautiful artwork for Gareth Edwards’ Anthology film (via HeyUGuys) that essentially offers up a fresh look at the questionable heroes and menacing villains populating the upcoming offshoot.
Chief among them is, of course, Jyn Erso, the “reckless, aggressive, and undisciplined” drifter portrayed by Felicity Jones. Recruited by Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) to spearhead a clandestine mission against the Galactic Empire, one that centers on the formidable Death Star, Jyn Erso is very much the driving force behind Edwards’ hotly-anticipated picture and, in true Star Wars fashion, her father Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) will prove instrumental in the overarching story.
That’s a narrative through line that was merely teased ahead of the arrival of a new Rogue One tie-in novel.

When Rogue One: A Star Wars Story makes a beeline for theaters in December, it’ll mark the first of Disney’s planned Anthology films – standalone stories that will be positioned adjacent to the core, episodic series.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are currently fleshing out their own Anthology flick, one that’ll chart the origins of everyone’s favorite galactic smuggler Han Solo, while there’s also chatter of a potential Star Wars spinoff focusing on Yoda. Big plans, then, and Rogue One director Gareth Edwards is well aware of the task at hand.

If you’ve been watching the Rio Olympics on television, you may have noticed a short TV spot for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It didn’t feature any new footage, but it did reveal that a brand new trailer for Gareth Edwards’ film will be airing on Thursday during the games (which was then later on confirmed by the official Star Wars Twitter account).
We’re not sure yet what Disney plans to show off with the new footage, but it’s a smart move on their part to release another preview. There’s been a lot of bad press surrounding Rogue One lately, what with news that Tony Gilroy has had to step in for Edwards and supervise the reshoots and most of the edits. On Monday, police officer Montrell Jackson was remembered in death the same way he was celebrated in life: as a peacemaker. "Montrell was a man who truly loved being a policeman, and he loved this city that he protected," Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said at Jackson's funeral, held Monday afternoon at the Living Faith Christian Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Jackson, a 32-year-old new father and 10-year veteran of the police department, was one of three law enforcement officers slain on July 17, in what authorities have called a targeted attack on police. His friends and family gathered Monday to say their goodbyes.

Much to the surprise of no one, it appears that the new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the very same one that was showcased behind-closed-doors at Star Wars Celebration Europe, has leaked online.
Remember, it’s a bootleg, so expect a fairly shaky experience. Nevertheless, it certainly chimes with last week’s trailer description, culminating in the reveal of Darth Vader. Well, we say reveal; James Earl Jones’ scenery-chewing big bad is glimpsed in a reflection of what we assume to be the shiny floor of the Death Star itself. But make no mistake, that iconic, rasping breathing apparatus can be heard loud and clear.

In branching off from Disney and Lucasfilm’s core saga, director Gareth Edwards has been tasked with lending Rogue One: A Star Wars Story an identity of its own, effectively diving deep into the period betwixt Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Part and parcel of that creative approach will be to put some distance between Edwards’ Anthology movie and the Star Wars movies of old – The Force Awakens included – and could result in Rogue One cutting out a key element of this most prized universe: the opening crawl.

We are, of course, referring to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Gareth Edwards’ militaristic offshoot that took budding fans behind-the-scenes earlier today with an inspired featurette. Teasing trouble in paradise (the alien planet of Scarif, in this instance), it showcased new footage of Edwards’ ragtag group of anti-heroes as they hitch a plan to steal blueprints for the Death Star.
But one character that remained on the sidelines was Galen Erso, Mads Mikkelsen’s rogue scientist and father to Felicity Jones’ lead heroine, Jyn Erso. Until now, at least.

Gareth Edwards, still hard at work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is still set as the director of Godzilla 2. He must be relieved to see that they’re moving Godzilla 2 to a new date on March 22, 2019, giving him a little bit of breathing room before these two giant films. Meanwhile, Jordan Vogt-Roberts is working hard right now on Kong: Skull Island, which is set in the same film universe, and which will give us some idea about how we’re ever going to see the big ape go head to head with the traditionally-much-larger fire-breathing lizard. Ah, my favourite dysfunctional family book. Try as I might, I cannot find a better description for this book than X-Men/Fantastic Four on steroids. There’s also more than a passing nod to the self destructiveness of the old Doom Patrol. These are deeply flawed people, but people who ultimately want to do the right thing. That altruism is something that, although admirable, is also something that can be twisted, taken advantage of. The team’s benefactor, Mr. Edwards, has shown us he is a talented manipulator, though up to now it seems to have all been for good reasons. As the team grows, as individual members gain confidence in both their abilities and their place, dynamics may start to shift and any hidden agendas may come to light. Noel Clarke has created a...

We look at what we know so far about Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - plus round up some of the juiciest rumours and bits of speculation...
Nb: The following contains potential spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and speculation about Rogue One.
Even the return of cinema's most charismatic fish can't quite match the anticipation surrounding this year's Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One. That's according to a much-shared survey which suggests that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the movie cinemagoers are most looking forward to in 2016 - beating Pixar sequel Finding Dory to second place and superhero face-off epic Batman V Superman into third.
That level of fervour isn't bad going, really, when you consider that: one, Rogue One isn't a full sequel to The Force Awakens, which is still cutting a swathe through multiplexes, and two, we don't really know a huge amount about it yet.

While Batman Vs Superman, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men Apocalypse and other mega franchises are expected to dominate cinemas in 2016, let’s hear it for the films below. None are sequels, few have titanic budgets, all of them are British and each of them has the potential to be great.
2016 looks to be a particularly strong year for UK crime drama, with Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, Adam Smith’s Trespass Against Us and Michael Apted’s Unlocked on their way. Military thrillers are also well represented this year, with Gavin Hood’s Eye In The Sky, Fernando Coimbra’s Sand Castle, and Simon West’s Stratton incoming. It was relentless and at times unforgiving. It was a season of death (but what do you expect in a hospital drama), betrayal, and excavation of the basest sides of humanity. There was more failure than success, more devastation than joy. Some of our dashing, delightful friends turned out to be monsters. And some of those monsters seem to have gotten away with their crimes. Many who were trying to pull themselves out of despair failed miserably. For the handful who were afforded happiness, it came with a price. And now that all is said and done, we are worse off than when we began. But did I enjoy it? Strangely, yes. But now I’m worried. Before we get started, let’s raise a glass to the forgotten, those overlooked characters whose promising stories died on the vine: Genevieve Everedge and Opal Edwards. I thought these women hinted redemption...

Given how revered Disney's "Pinocchio" is today, it's hard to believe it was a flop when it was first released exactly three quarters of a century ago. Upon its New York City premiere, on February 7, 1940, critics hailed the film as a masterpiece, and even to this day, many prefer it to Disney's pioneering first animated feature, 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Yet it took the film many years and multiple re-releases to make a profit.
Today, of course, the legacy of "Pinocchio" is inescapable. Everyone's image of the puppet-boy with the nose that grows when he lies comes not from Carlo Collodi's original novel but from the kid with the Tyrolean hat and the Mickey Mouse gloves, as drawn by Disney animators. And the opening tune, Jiminy Cricket's "When You Wish Upon a Star," is ubiquitous as the theme music played before every Walt Disney movie and home video release.

Maybe Michael De Luca from Columbia Pictures isn't the only person that thinks Gary Whitta "blows."
A few weeks after an infamous e-mail was leaked from the Sony Hacking scandal, where the Columbia President of Production said "except Whitta whom I think blows," it looks like the writer and LucasFilm are parting ways. Whitta apparently turned in a first draft of the standalone Star Wars spinoff he wrote for Gareth Edwards (Godzilla), and that was the end of that.
The break-up appears to be amicable, with both sides expressing gratitude for the opportunity, but it stands to reason that if LucasFilm loved what they saw that Whitta wouldn't be going anywhere. They likely responded with a bunch of notes and critiques, or told him they'd be bringing in other writers to rewrite his work, and that was enough for him to walk off.
The After Earth writer may now be...

The career of Gareth Edwards is one that would make a film school student envious. His first film, "Monsters," was a labor of love, made on a shoestring budget, with the VFX largely done a laptop. The result? A solid indie highlighting a director with a real sense of mood and craft. That effort found him leveraged into the blockbuster "Godzilla," and no matter what you thought of it, the movie was a huge smash, opening last weekend over $90 million at the box office. So what does Edwards do next? He's doing to Disneyland. Kinda. THR reports that he'll direct one of the upcoming "Star Wars" spin-offs. Of course, given the shroud of secrecy around those movies, it's not clear which one it will be, but rumors abound. Earlier this week, fanboys were stirred when a random German site, Star Wars Union (via Nerdist), claimed that a recent Hasbro training...

While competing monster movie franchises have come and gone, Godzilla has endured at the top of kaiju food chain, fending off everyone from King Kong and Mothra to Roland Emmerich's disastrous 1998 "reimagining." Now, some 60 years after the undisputed King of the Monsters' first appearance, Hollywood is getting a second shot at rebooting the legendary monster.
Thanks to director Gareth Edwards taking a page out the tried-and-true Spielberg playbook and an impressive cast, this latest "Godzilla" manages to do the big guy justice, resulting in a crowd-pleasing summer blockbuster that's hitting with both critics and fans. But a few questions still remain. So I put together the following handy survival guide to help you know what to expect from the king of all reboots.
Beware of spoilers.

Not unlike the ‘Big G’ himself, our coverage is unstoppable! Up next is an interview with Aaron Taylor-Johnson from the set of Warner Bros. and Legendary’s upcoming May 16 release of Gareth Edward’s reinvention of Godzilla, stemming from our visit to the Vancouver set last June.
Emanating from director Ishiro Honda’s classic 1954 original of the same name, the 2014 Edwards-helmed Godzilla features actors Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass), Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), David Strathairn (The Bourne Legacy), Elizabeth Olsen and Ken Watanabe, in a script by Max Borenstein, Dave Callaham and Frank Darabont, which pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Mary Parent and Brian Rogers produce alongside executive producers Alex Garcia, Patricia Whitcher, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira.

It’s a sunny day in Southern California. That’s not unusual. An independent movie is being shot in a quiet residential neighborhood. That’s the norm. There are a few horror icons sprinkled throughout the cast. Typical.
What’s not so usual is that The Divine Tragedies isn’t your basic stab and slab. It’s a layered family drama which just happens to have some blood and gore. At the center of this dangerous dynamic is a cop who’s hunting a team of killer brothers – but he’s got an advantage because he’s psychic. That, and he’s played by the great Ken Foree.
We caught up with Ken on set (and some of the other cast... stay tuned for more interviews) and asked him what it’s been like to play the eccentric detective.

Next year’s full of potentially great films, so to help, here’s a list of 25 movies we're most looking forward to in 2014...
These lists of anticipated forthcoming movies have become an annual fixture by now, and as ever, our selection has been tricky to whittle down. In restricting our list to just 25, we've tried to create a mix of the high-profile and the less obvious. Movies such as Non-Stop, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Big Hero Six and Edge Of Tomorrow came close but didn't quite make the cut, even though they have much to offer for their own reasons.
Furthermore, given the number of films competing for space, we've left the latest chapters of The Hunger Games and The Hobbit off the list. We're keen to see both, but we're wary of taking up slots with movies...

Gareth Edwards' "grounded, realistic" new take on Godzilla wrapped filming earlier this year, and debuted its breathtaking first trailer exclusively at Comic-Con.
Following the panel, Digital Spy caught up with the film's stars Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen to ask them what Edwards has done right with the remake.
Both actors spoke about the story's 'human-focused" approach, while Olsen also discussed its real-world relevance.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who also stars, has described Godzilla as having the feel of an independent movie.
> Comic-Con 10 movies highlights: 'X-Men', "Thor', Batman vs Superman
> 'Pacific Rim' special: 5 best giant movie monsters
Godzilla will be released on May 16, 2014.

Comic-Con 2013 is officially over, and we're just hitting the really grim part of our post-San Diego comedown, where we're not capable of doing much besides re-reading panel blogs and weeping quietly into our poster tubes.
To help us through the comedown, we're looking back on the ten coolest things that happened in Hall H on the movies front this year.
Loki enslaves the Hall H audience
Saturday was arguably the greatest day for movies in Comic-Con history, and it wrapped up on a memorable note as Tom Hiddleston, in costume and in character as the villainous Loki, arrived to kick off the Marvel Studios panel. While it ultimately emerged that he was there to introduce new footage from Thor: The Dark World, he first took the time to admonish the assembled crowd of sweaty, sleep-deprived nerds. "Humanity! Look how far you've fallen," he cried. "Lining up in the sweltering heat.

Man of Steel and Dark Knight to face off in Zack Snyder sequel, but word still out on the casting of Batman. Also on the Warner Bros Comic-Con panel: Tom Cruise, Sandra Bullock and Godzilla

Zack Snyder will direct the follow-up to his $630m global hit Man of Steel and will reunite with his Superman, Henry Cavill. Warner Bros. Pictures just wrapped their multi-film Comic Con panel this morning in Hall H where fans were treated to footage and cast members from the likes of "Godzilla," "300: Rise of an Empire," "Gravity," "Seventh Son," "The Lego Movie," "Edge of Tomorrow" and in a surprise - "World of Warcraft".
World of Warcraft
Aside from the superhero announcement news, which you can read here, the biggest surprise was a proof of concept style teaser for the Duncan Jones-directed live-action "World of Warcraft" movie which will begin filming early next year. The clip showed a knight standing on a green skied desert as a storm comes in. The knight pulls out his sword, takes a shield from a skeleton, and prepares to face a giant orc with a battle axe.
Godzilla
The next most anticipated film was Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla". Both the trailer from last year, and a new trailer was screened.

"Godzilla" stomped into Comic-Con on Saturday afternoon with director Gareth Edwards and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston in tow, to offer Hall H denizens another look at the iconic monster. Last year, Warner Bros. made a splash by showing early footage of "Godzilla" before any of the stars were even cast in the film. (That's likely because the star, as always, is Godzilla himself.)
Speaking with HuffPost Entertainment before the "Godzilla" panel, Edwards said that his film was influenced by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks as well as the Thailand tsumani. "We try to make this as realistic as we can, and we try to take it seriously," Edwards said.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the third announced earlier today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on ABC.
The network is changing up some of its serialized dramas - removing random repeats in favor of two "uninterrupted runs" of twelve episodes each (one in the fall, one in the spring) for shows like "Once Upon A Time," "Grey’s Anatomy," "Scandal" and "Revenge". The large gaps between the two half-seasons will be bridged by "limited series" designed around only 12-13 episode seasons.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the high-profile "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" rip-off "Gothica", McG's rip-off of Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet" entitled "Westside", the series based on Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain ride, the Annie Potts-led "Murder in Manhattan" about...

Update: The primary cast of Godzilla looks complete (and it didn't work out with Henry Cavill). Aaron Johnson (Kick-a**) , Elizabeth Olson (Kill Your Darlings) and Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") starring and David Straithairn (Lincoln), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Juliette Binoche (Dan in Real Life) and "Hawaii Five-0" actor Richard T. Jones (Super 8) in supporting roles. Production has already begun on the Legendary Films reboot of one of the most popular monster movies of all time.
Jan. 7, 2013 - Henry Cavill, the new Superman in Man of Steel, may be taking on another monster reboot. He's on the short list of actors being considered to star in Godzilla, Legendary's high profile remake. How cool would it be to see Superman take on Godzilla?? Also reportedly under consideration for the role is Scoot McNairy (Argo), and Caleb Landry Jones (Banshee in X-Men: First Class).
A bit of a dustup, though, because Legendary dismissed...

From Wikipedia: Critics have generally received Ender’s Game well. The novel won the Nebular Award for best novel in 1985, and the Hugo for best novel in 1986, considered the two most prestigious awards in science fiction. Ender’s Game was also nominated for a Locus Award in 1986. In 1999, it placed #59 on the reader’s list of the Modern Library 100 Best Novels. It was also honored with a spot on the American Library Association’s “100 Best Books for Teens.” In 2008, the novel, along with (it’s sequel) Ender’s Shadow won the Margaret A. Edwards Award, which honors an author and specific works by that author for lifetime contribution to young adult literature. Ender’s Game was ranked at #2 in Damien Broderick’s book Science Fiction: The 101 Best Novels 1985-2010. Not too shabby. The announcement by DC that Orson Scott Card (author of Ender’s Game and its sequel) will be...

We'll begin tonight's Night Cap with some behind-the-scenes information pertaining to The Dark Knight Rises. To be more specific, the film's villain Bane as played by Tom Hardy and what we didn't see in the final film. Speaking with GQ (via Slashfilm), costume designer Lindy Hemming discusses a scene pertaining to Bane's origin story that wasn't in the final film: The thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn't got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he's learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he's wearing an early version of his waist belt. It's showing support, but it's not the finished one he eventually wears.
