Back in June we profiled on S & A a new short film documentary in post-production, The Queen’s Suite, by London based filmmaker Corine Dhondee. It chronicles a young British jazz musician and arranger Peter Edwards who recreated and performed, with a hand picked jazz orchestra, one of the jazz master Duke Ellington’s forgotten works, The Queen’s Suite.
Dhondee was inspired to make the film after attending an open rehearsal of the work in 2008 after not only being won over by the music, but also by the inspiring story of an extremely talented young Black British man who was equally inspired by an important yet forgotten piece of black art and culture.
The work, which Ellington wrote in 1958, was written for Queen Elizabeth II after he met her in Leeds when he was invited to perform at a music festival in Leeds. Only one recording was made of the work,...

Now here’s a film that definitely looks interesting to say the least – the new documentary, The Queen’s Suite, by British filmmaker Corine Dhondee. It chronicles a young British jazz musician and arranger Peter Edwards who recreates and performs, with a jazz orchestra, one of the master Duke Ellington’s forgotten works, The Queen’s Suite. The work, which Ellington wrote in 1958, was written after Ellington met Queen Elizabeth II and only one recording was made of it, which was sent to the Queen. It’s remained unperformed since then, except for one performance in 1988.
The film is currently in post-production, though the filmmakers are still actively seeking funds to complete the film, and it’s currently being considered for broadcast by Bet and possibly HBO. It’ll hopefully start playing the film festival circuit soon (though a rough version of the film premiered at CinemaJazz this past April). For more,...

London -- It's all about leveraged cash as public funding for Welsh filmmaking enjoys success with the Oscar nomination documentary shortlist for "Mugabe and the White African."
The documentary's success in the Oscar race is the latest feather in the cap for the Film Agency of Wales.
It details the story of a white Zimbabwean farmer whose family is attacked and loses his farm while the country starves under president Mugabe.
The doc is one of a slew of projects backed with cash from the Welsh Agency, which said Tuesday it has injected over £1 million ($1.6 million) into the local industry to year ending March 2009.
The cash may not seem very much but it is often a key component in the birth of a project.
"One of the substantial financial benefits not evidenced in the throughput of our accounts is the leveraged partnership funding for the various feature films that we support,...
