Urban legends are mostly just that, the stuff of legends. They can inspire some people to do horrifying things and create urban legends of their own. Very often, these stories get the movie or show treatment whether they hue close to anything factual or not. One of the most famous examples of this urban legend which has a serial killer acting out some of the most famously told tales. Often movies that use the “inspired by” tag don’t have much to do with their source material like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre being merely inspired by Ed Gein. What happens when a legend inspires a movie and then the real story comes out years later?...

Scream Factory has announced that they will be bringing the 1981 slasher The Burning (watch it Here) to 4K Uhd this summer – on July 11th, to be exact – and they’re taking pre-orders at This Link. While supplies last, fans who order the 4K Uhd / Blu-ray set through the Scream Factory website will receive an exclusive 18” X 24” rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork. The price is $35.99.
The movie is a very cool slasher and I think Scream Factory has chosen an ideal release date for it, as it’s a great one to put on during the summer.
Directed by Tony Maylam, who also crafted the story with Bob Weinstein, Peter Lawrence, Brad Grey, and, unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein, The Burning has the following synopsis: At summer camp, some teenagers pull a prank on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy. But the joke goes terribly wrong, and the teens leave Cropsy for...

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

Though there’s no sign he plans to retire soon — he has several further projects in the can — producer-star Ron Perlman’s vehicle “Asher” is the kind of movie that often serves as an actor’s onscreen bow-out these days. Like recent “The Old Man and the Gun” or imminent “The Mule,” it provides “Hellboy” star Perlman a way to both stay in the game and acknowledge “aging out” as a veteran criminal whose next job may be his last.
That blend of action genre content and character study is a comfortable mix for Perlman, even if “Asher” doesn’t quite have the stuff to be truly memorable on either count. This leisurely neo-noir, directed by Michael Caton-Jones from a first produced script by Jay Zaretsky, opens today on 10 U.S. screens simultaneous with digital-formats release.
Asher (Perlman) is a dignified silver-haired gent living a quiet, solitary existence in his New York loft apartment.

Now titled The Night Of, James Gandolfini’s dormant passion project Criminal Justice has been given a new lease of life at HBO, and a summer premiere date to boot.
Pitched as an eight-part series, the ensemble drama has been collecting dust on the shelf since the actor’s tragic passing three years ago. There have been some fleeting signs of life, though, particularly when Robert De Niro flirted with the idea of replacing Gandolfini, before backing out of Criminal Justice six months later.
In his steed, John Turturro will take point for HBO’s procedural drama, and the actor is one of the few stars that have remained attached to the project over the years – Riz Ahmed, Bill Camp, Payman Maadi, and Poorna Jagannathan are among that nuclear cast. But during the creative overhaul, the network has beefed up the show’s ensemble quite considerably, enlisting the likes of Michael K. Williams,...

Experiment This: Almereyda Revisits Classic Social Psych Progenitor
American filmmaker Michael Almereyda brings to the screen a pseudo-biopic on one of the more famous social psychologists, Stanley Milgram, whose name should, at the very least, rumble through the memory bank of anyone who has ever taken a Psychology course. But Experimenter, much like academia, is concerned mostly with Milgram’s famed early 1960s obedience experiments, which yielded disturbing results about easily conditioned human beings that society at large was not quite ready to accept, leading to Milgram being treated as something of a pariah within his own academic community. Filmed with a desaturated palette and utilizing props and set backdrops to inflect rather than convey period, Almereyda’s created a cold, clinical portrait of a man whose own familial background informed his timely social experiment, one that’s been referenced and recreated as a tenet of understanding unnerving truths as concerns human behavior.

Michael Almereyda's thrilling Experimenter with Peter Sarsgaard as Stanley Milgram, Winona Ryder as his wife Sacha, Jim Gaffigan as the "Learner", "Teachers" including John Leguizamo and Tom Farrell, and Ned Eisenberg as social psychology pioneer Solomon Asch, is a storytelling experiment on its own.
Busy preparing his new film, starring Lois Smith and Jon Hamm, based on Jordan Harrison's Pulitzer Prize nominated play, Marjorie Prime, Michael met me at a café in the East Village to discuss Experimenter with a quick glance back at Sam Shepard directing The Late Henry Moss in Almereyda's This So-Called Disaster (starring Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, Woody Harrelson, Sheila Tousey and Cheech Marin), and a move forward to more Italo Calvino folktales.
Peter Sarsgaard as Stanley Milgram: "My admiration for him just deepened as I went."

I can't remember the last time I saw two performances this good, wasted in such a substandard film. Won't Back Down is a softball feature trying to play hardball as it tackles the issues facing public schools, refuses to leave any stone unturned and sabotages its own story as a result. Unsure of what he wants to focus on specifically, director and co-writer Daniel Barnz is addressing motivated teachers versus those skating by, upset parents, disadvantaged kids, charter schools with limited space, uncaring unions and private schools that cost too much money. And those are just the surface level issues before you bring in the actual characters. First we have Jamie Fitzpatrick (Maggie Gyllenhaal). She's a single mother, working two jobs. Her daughter is dyslexic and they can't afford private school, they missed out on the charter school lottery and her daughter's teacher is lazy and uncaring. The system is...

I don’t go to movies to be told what to think. Even if I agree with what I’m being told is right, I am offended by the arrogance of having that decided for me.
This is a movie about kids who can’t read for adults who can’t think. My logline for this movie would be: it’s the opposite of Stand And Deliver (stupid students and incompetent teachers) crossed with Not Without My Daughter; reduce and simmer mixture until you reach lowest common denominator.
The movie opens with the superimposed text “inspired by actual events.” That’s quite a suspicious redundancy. My personal opinion (sic) is that all events are actual by definition, unless someone else sees them differently. I presume this is the case as there is no prologue nor epilogue after the film to that describes the “actual events” the film inspired.

Chicago – If you’re not easily susceptible to vertigo and can survive the intro cut scene, “Limitless” proceeds to treat you to one part thrill ride and one part exercise in ridiculousness. While we often go to the movies to escape, “Limitless” manipulatively exploits our deepest and darkest desires for wealth, power and Google-like global conquests.

The film’s frustrations start and end with its story, which was written for the screen by Leslie Dixon based on the novel by Alan Glynn. Dixon, who has come a long way from “Mrs. Doubtfire” with this immediate-gratification film that goes out one ear just as fast as it enters the other, bases her premise on an experimental, non-fda-approved drug with no street name.
Predictable with every try at a twist or turn, even if your brain got extracted from your head you’d still be able to channel from it the...
