New York, NY — February 15, 2023 — The 92nd Street Y, New York (92Ny), one of New York’s leading cultural venues, presents Benjamin Grosvenor, piano, plays Schumann, Prokofiev, and more, on March 16, 2023 at 7:30pm Et at the Kaufmann Concert Hall. The concert will also be available for viewing online for 72 hours from time of broadcast. Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor returns to 92Ny following a 2017 debut, opening his program with Busoni’s transcription of Bach’s Chaconne before Schumann’s C-Major Fantasie. This program’s second half begins with more Ravel with his Baroque homage in modern colors, Le tombeau de Couperin, and closes with Prokofiev’s B-Flat Major Sonata.

One day over lunch some 15 or more years ago, the trailblazing conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, Mark Elder, the Shostakovich scholar and avant-garde composer Gerard McBurney and I discovered our shared passion for the music of Ivor Novello. The slow-burning result of that encounter is the late-night Prom on 9 August celebrating the work and remarkable life of our hero. All those years ago we pledged that we Must Do Something About Ivor, but exactly what was unclear. Novello was the most successful British musical theatre composer of the 20th century before the meteoric rise of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and one of the great figures of his time. But it would have been hard at that moment in the 1990s to have chosen a less fashionable...

His life was as romantic and colourful as his exquisite music, yet his works are rarely performed today. Delius deserves better, writes Julian Lloyd Webber
No other composer polarises opinion like Delius. You either love or loathe his music. And it is rare to find someone who has grown to like it. Although this coming year – the 150th anniversary of his birth – will bring opportunities to reassess his work, that central fact will never change.
I feel as if I have known Delius's music forever. My father was a devotee and I must have heard all of his most famous works (On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring, The Walk to the Paradise Garden, La Calinda, et al) well before I started playing his cello music. I always felt instinctively attuned to Delius's unique musical language, which seemed akin to watching a painting that is slowly changing in a constantly moving canvas of sound.

A quick Elgar discovery for the weekend, after a sneak preview of John Bridcut's film about the composer, Elgar: The Man Behind the Mask, scheduled to be broadcast on BBC4 on 12 November. Bridcut creates some striking scenes with some great Elgarians – Colin Davis, Edward Gardner, Anthony Payne, Michael Kennedy, David Owen Norris – listening to their favourite Elgar works. A simple idea, but it's moving to see the sunlit magic of the soloist's first notes in the Violin Concerto reflected in Colin Davis's smile, or Michael Kennedy's rapt contemplation as he hears the raw melancolia of Sospiri.
Most revelatory of all, at least for me, was watching Mark Elder listen to Elgar's Owls: An Epitaph (one of the...
