The race by the AMPTP and the WGA to get a deal done by sundown had plenty of folks thinking back to a very memorable episode of Entourage — Doug Ellin, included.
The creator of the HBO comedy was reminded Sunday on X about how the weekend negotiations between the AMPTP and the WGA sounded “like an Entourage storyline.”
Ellin replied, “And on Yom Kippur it sure does.”
Not sure what he’s talking about? Think back 16 years ago to the season 3 episode dubbed “The Return of the King.” The 2007 episode kicks off with the boys at the race track while Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) is arriving at temple before the start of Yom Kippur. That’s when he runs into Nick Rubenstein (Adam Goldberg), the neurotic son of movie producer Phil Rubenstein who is making the movie Medellin with Paul Haggis.

Entourage creator Doug Ellin went full Ari Gold on a writer who posted an essay declaring that the HBO comedy series will be re-edited to reflect modern sensibilities (à la Roald Dahl and Agatha Christie’s books).
There’s just one thing: The essay was satire, which Ellin apparently didn’t recognize.
The piece was written by Max Davison at McSweeney’s (which should have been the first clue) who pretended to be an HBO executive announcing Entourage will be the network’s first series to undergo “sensitivity readings,” noting, “[Since 2011], we have since undergone vast shifts in our views on women, race, and Ed Hardy …. We are merely removing a handful of problematic elements that were more socially acceptable back in Entourage’s time. These include sexism, homophobia, misogyny, anti-Semitism, dubious sexual politics, Asian hate, toxic masculinity, the casting couch, racial slurs, ethnic slurs, sexist jokes, abusive workplace language, mockery of sex workers,...

It seems like Mark Wahlberg and the rest of the Entourage gang may need to hug it out, as Jeremy Piven is saying he’s the major snag in a potential reboot. Wahlberg, whose exploits with his funky bunch (not that one) were a key inspiration for the story and characters, also served as an executive producer.
Speaking with TMZ, Piven (who won three Emmys for playing Ari Gold) said that if Mark Wahlberg can find the time to throw his weight and starpower behind an Entourage reboot, it will be a Tarvold-level victory for all. “If Mark and his team were really behind it, that would be some nice momentum…Listen, Mark wakes up, he gets about 11 minutes sleep. He wakes up and he prays, he crushes the weights, he never stops! So…when he comes up for air in a little crack of time, just make that call to HBO and everybody wins.

He’s not been around for a couple of seasons.” Of course, he is referring to his character on the show, Bobby Axelrod. Entourage star Emmanuelle Chriqui has defended the series after claims it was “misogynistic”.
The series followed a group of men, led by Hollywood actor Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), and their lavish lifestyle in Los Angeles.
Chriqui joined the HBO comedy in 2005 for its second season, and played Sloan, the girlfriend of Kevin Connolly’s Eric, right through to its final run in 2011. She reprised the role of Sloan for the film spin-off in 2015.
In recent years, the show’s legacy has been questioned, with some writers calling the Doug Ellin-directed series sexist for its depiction of women as disposable sexual pursuits.
One person who disagrees with this is Chriqui, whose supporting character was the most prominent woman featured in the show.
During Chriqui’s appearance on Inside of You, podcast host Michael Rosenbaum asked the actor about whether the “bro culture” portrayed in the show “still exists”.

When Martin Sheen began pursuing an acting career in the early 1960s, he made a crucial choice that would follow him for the rest of his life. The then-young actor, who was raised by a Spanish father and an Irish mother, opted to abandon his given name of Ramon Estévez and use the stage name Martin Sheen as a way to get more work.
The move paid off, as Sheen was able to build a highly successful acting career that included roles in movies like “Apocalypse Now” and iconic TV characters including President Jed Bartlet on “The West Wing” and Robert Hanson on “Grace and Frankie.” And the actor is still going strong at the age of 81, as he is currently gearing up to star alongside his son Charlie in “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin’s new show “Ramble On.”
Still, as he looks back on his storied career, Sheen has some regrets.

The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Mark Cuban, billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner, Shark Tank star and early Internet entrepreneur, is announcing the launch of his latest media venture, a mobile interactive storytelling platform called Fireside.
Cuban, who has spanned tech and entertainment for years — his 2929 Entertainment portfolio includes Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing — is co-founder of the venture with Falon Fatemi, formerly of Google/YouTube. It’s basically a set of tools that let professional content creators easily produce, edit and distribute shows for live audiences, Fatemi said. It helps creators sell tickets to the shows if they want and gathers audience response data to help them fine-tune productions.
Fatemi, who is CEO, told Deadline that Fireside’s proprietary technology can be used by creators from podcasters, authors, musicians, television personalities and comedians to business leaders and policy makers. “Just attacking every single thing that comes out is, in my mind, very dangerous”
“Entourage” creator Doug Ellin said a “wave of righteous PC culture” is to blame for the HBO comedy’s declining reputation in recent years, defending the series as an accurate representation of how men in Hollywood behaved at the time.
“I resent it tremendously,” Ellin said in an interview with Yahoo Entertainment when asked about HBO’s “skittishness” around the series. “Nobody says that about ‘The Sopranos,’ where they murder people, that maybe we should readdress whether murdering people on TV is Ok. … There needs to be a reckoning and social injustices need to [be addressed] in certain ways, but just attacking every single thing that comes out is, in my mind, very dangerous.”

In a lengthy interview with Yahoo Entertainment, “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin criticizes HBO for ignoring his series in the decade since the comedy signed off the network. “I resent it tremendously,” Ellin said, adding that HBO giving “Entourage” the cold shoulder in recent years is due to the same “wave of righteous PC culture” that has created backlash around the series. “Entourage” is often criticized for its misogynistic depiction of women and accused of glorifying toxic Hollywood culture, among other grievances. Ellin said the show was merely depicting Hollywood at the time and would be updated with the times if HBO rebooted the property.
“I don’t think ‘Entourage’ was this vulgar boy-fest that people like to paint it as now,” Ellin said. “When we came out, the New York Times said we were the smartest show on television! If we did reboot the show, it’s not that I...

Between 2004 and 2011, HBO’s Entourage earned big ratings and numerous awards, including six Emmys and a Golden Globe. But in the wake of #MeToo, the comedy about the Hollywood boys club is being viewed in a different light.
On Tuesday, the show’s creator, Doug Ellin, spoke with Yahoo Entertainment and bemoaned the situation, which he says has resulted from a “wave of righteous PC culture.”
“I’m proud of everything we did on Entourage, and I certainly don’t think it’s something that should be a lightning rod,” Ellin said. “It should be looked at for what it was.”
What it was, from Ellin’s perspective, was a “show….about friendship and loyalty and family,” which was “extremely realistic,” in depicting the Hollywood dynamics of its time.

Imagine Entertainment has set its roster of participants of Impact 2, the inventive program where the company empowers outside voices, “creators,” paying the newcomers accepted to the program to develop TV series and movies under the watchful eye of “shapers,” a group of established industry writers and showrunners. The program, hatched by Imagine co-heads Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, this year got over 4000 submissions from 57 countries covering every continent but Antarctica. Tyler Mitchell runs the program.
The “shapers” in this year’s program are: Stacy Traub, Akiva Goldsman, Doug Ellin, Seth Grahame-Smith, Michele Mulroney, Kieran Mulroney and Sascha Penn.
Here are the newcomers whose work was accepted and who will be paid a stipend to create one new project during the boot camp, before all of the work gets pitched to the town. Traub will oversee:

In 2005, Ellin famously launched a fake “Aquaman” as part of the second season of his popular HBO comedy series. In the show’s world, actor Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) played the briny superhero.
“It’s so interesting to me now because the real movie does look like it’s going to be a huge hit and does look like they visualized it in a way that my brain could probably never do,” Ellin told Entertainment Weekly while revisiting the second season storyline. “I thought ‘Aquaman’ sounded like the most ridiculous movie in the world and, to me, the only way to make...
