Samuel L. Jackson fought to keep the 'Snakes on a Plane' film title from being changed. The actor starred in the 2006 action horror which features passengers fighting a horde of venomous villains which had been placed on the aircraft by a gang boss in an attempt to cause a crash - and he's now revealed studio bosses wanted to give the film a more generic name to keep the snakes a secret but he wasn't happy about it. Speaking to Vulture, the 74-year-old actor explained he was excited about signing on for the movie because of the title, saying: "When I heard about 'Snakes on a Plane', I had just done 'Formula 51' with the director [Ronny Yu]. So I called him, was like: 'Are you going to do a movie called 'Snakes on a Plane'? Is it what I think it is?...

Ever since the 1975 horror blockbuster Jaws made us afraid to go into the water, America has had an obsession with sharks. While great whites get most of the attention, any aquatic killer with sharp teeth will usually quench our collective thirst for marine menace. In 1988, Discovery Channel launched Shark Week, a seven day block of programming filled with nature documentaries, celebrity cameos, and aquatic reality TV designed to explore the wide world of sharks. This annual event has been going strong for the past 35 years, working its way into the public consciousness to become a household name. Each summer’s horror offerings usually bring with it one or more films of the Shark Horror subgenre. Featuring the underwater predators as their villains, these movies vary widely in quality and usually sink or swim based on the verisimilitude of their special effects.

Samuel L Jackson has revealed that he threatened to quit the movie Snakes on a Plane if producers went with its alternative title.
The 2006 action film, directed by David R Ellis, starred Jackson as an FBI agent on a plane where dozens of venomous snakes have been released in an attempt to kill a trial witness.
During an interview on the podcast Pardon My Take, Jackson reflected on how, after filmmaker Ronny Yu was fired from the movie, production company New Line Cinema wanted to change the film’s name.
Jackson said: “The first day I got there, they were passing out new pages, and they gave me this script that said Pacific Flight 121, and I’m like, ‘The f*** is this?’”
The studio told the actor that the film’s name had been changed so as not to spoil its plot.
To which Jackson replied: “You exactly want to do that!

It was the incredibly crass, brilliantly stupid title that sank its fangs into the internet and wouldn’t let go: Snakes On A Plane. Directed by the late David R. Ellis, a stuntman turned director, and starring a never louder Samuel L. Jackson, the airborne, serpent-heavy thriller finally reached theaters on August 18, 2006, after months of inescapable online hype. The film turned a modest profit on its not-inconsiderable $33 million budget, but it was considered a disappointment when judged against New Line Cinema’s sky-high expectations. The studio had been banking on the deafening internet buzz and had even tailored the film to meet fan’s expectations, necessitating five days of reshoots. Now that the film is a decade old, it is time to reflect on what Snakes On A Plane achieved and failed to achieve in 2006, as well as what the film’s lasting impact on popular ...

The one with the plane crash or the one with the bridge? We try to figure out which of the Final Destination movies is the best…
Final Destination is the most existential horror franchise of them all. Its characters don’t get to hope for survival if they can outrun a man with a knife or shoot a zombie square in the head – they’re being hunted by Death itself, and there’s no escape.
The Final Destination franchise masks its incredibly bleak message with bright colors and inventive Mousetrap-style killings, but at heart, they’re about how everyone dies one day, and the whole world is out to get you. Hardly anyone lives to the end of a Final Destination movie; the ones that do generally have to go to extreme measures, and it’s implied they won’t last long beyond the credits.

Go Fly One: Ziman’s Anime Adaptation a Denuded, Unnecessary Endeavor
Those familiar with Yasuomi Umetsu’s 1998 fifty minute anime of the same name will be sorely disappointed in Ralph Ziman’s modernized update of the controversial Kite. But a faithful, live action rendition would have crossed the boundaries and limits of what defines exploitation cinema since we’re talking about an orphaned school girl sex slave assassin. A more fitting nod came from Quentin Tarantino, who culled the origin tangent of O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill from Umetsu, in an anime sequence deemed too violent for live action. While a faithful adaptation would have seemed gratuitous, this end product is unable to elicit any kind of response at all, feeling utterly uninspired in look, tone, or content.

Through films like Flightplan, Soul Plane, and White House Down, it has taken over a decade for Hollywood to arrive at Non-Stop.
Showing the vitality of Liam Neeson carrying a gun and a broken heart, Non-Stop recently gave the new action hero one of his biggest box office weekends so far. Involving an air marshal using a particular set of skills to hunt and kill someone threatening his plane (to paraphrase Taken), the film may seem like a generic Neeson actioner. But while his character might be a composite of previous roles, the anxiety he tackles within this film is fresh. Considering its box office success (and my mother’s intense experience in watching the movie), Non-Stop works efficiently as a thriller in 2014 because it provides viewers with imagery of in-flight chaos not seen since before 9/11. It is also the indication of a natural progression for how Hollywood films are...

After movies like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, I’m all for horror anthologies abiding by a particular theme. There’s something inherently fun about such a cornucopia of treats, as different directors populate one single film with so many distinctive styles and traits – as long as the segments set the stage for such fun. I’ll always give a horror anthology a try, from Chillerama to The Theatre Bizarre, which is why I’m happy to say we’ve got an exciting anthology coming our way with Fear Paris.
Newly announced, Fear Paris will join the likes of Joe Dante (Gremlins), Xavier Gens (Hitman/Frontier(s)), and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky), as they explore the horrific underworld of France’s iconic capital city. Here’s the full press release, accompanied by a tonal teaser below:

Park City - What makes a great action filmmaker truly great? Is it just the ability to orchestrate and shoot mayhem? If so, then David Ellis would have to be considered one of the greats simply for the highway crash sequence in "Final Destination 2," and pretty much every other scene he ever shot would negate that idea. And if pure mayhem is what makes you great overall, then the destruction of Chicago means that none of Michael Bay's weaknesses as a filmmaker matter, right? There are a number of directors out there right now who deserve more credit than they...

A troubled shoot won't ease the concerns of followers of Kite, the cult Japanese anime written and directed by Yasuomi Umetsu. The Hollywood movie version has been in production for years, but filming stalled when original director, David R. Ellis, died in his Johannesburg hotel room during filming. Ralph Ziman (The Zookeeper) took over directorial duties and this is our first glimpse of the live action adaptation starring Samuel L. Jackson. The original series - consisting of two 30 minute episodes - was banned in many countries, including Norway, where it was outlawed for scenes of "child pornography", which is a criminal offence in Norway. That said, Kite is considered a cult classic in many circles and a Hollywood version was always going to find the going tough. No pressure there then. Unfortunately, Ellis passed away unexpectedly in early 2013, which left many wondering if this particular project would ever move forward. Today, we can show you that it did, as we’ve got a new nine-minute clip that has Samuel L. Jackson introducing the film, a trailer, and the opening scenes of the actual movie. India Eisley costars in the feature – playing a young woman who’s out to avenge the murder of her parents while also assassinating members of a group who deal in the trafficking of young women. The late director David R. Ellis was supposed to reteam with his Snakes on a Plane star for a live-action adaptation of the Japanese anime movie Kite. But since he died just before production was supposed to begin, South African director Ralph Ziman (Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema) had to take over the project. It's been a year since then, and now it sounds like the project is gearing up for the big screen release as Bloody Disgusting has gotten ahold of an early trailer for the film introduced by star Samuel L. Jackson, proclaiming his affection for the original work. There seems to be some cool action, but Jackson could just as easily be playing Shaft again in this film and there wouldn't be much of a difference. Watch it! Final Destination and Shark Night 3D fans, listen up!
Horror Movie a Day will pay tribute to the late, great David Ellis with a 10-year anniversary midnight screening of Final Destination 2 at the New Beverly on March 16.
Why David Ellis? Hmad midnight screening programmer Brian Collins explains:

Where were Andy Griffith, Larry Hagman and other well-known celebrities in this year's Oscars In Memoriam montage? They were online at Oscar.com.
Every year it's one of the more reliably ridiculous award show controversies: Who didn't make the cut for In Memoriam?
When it comes to the Oscars, these "snubs" are particularly sensitive given the prestige and viewership of the show, and the fact that the montage inevitably leaves out names and faces of recognizable stars -- usually those known far more for their work in television than their work in film, which is the medium that the Academy Awards actually celebrate.

Almost one month ago, the news hit that director David R. Ellis (“The Final Destination,” “Snakes On A Plane”) had been found dead in his Johannesburg hotel room where he was staying while working on “Kite,” a remake of the 1998 Japanese anime film that was set to star Samuel L. Jackson. Now, rest assured that while Ellis is no more, his project will live on. South African director Ralph Ziman is set to take over at the helm. Jackson will stay on board, while India Eisley and Callan McAuliffe have also joined the cast. Ziman’s best-known directing credit is for 2008’s “Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema,” about crime in a post-apartheid black South African neighborhood. The film was generally well-reviewed and praised for its kinetic energy -- something Ziman will need to adapt the dystopian “Kite.” The original anime sparked controversy for its graphic depictions of an orphaned girl turned sex.

When the sudden news of Snakes on a Plane director David R. Ellis passing away surfaced last month, that left the adaptation of he Japanese anime movie Kite, starring Samuel L. Jackson, in limbo. The project was gearing up to start production when Ellis passed away, and it was unclear what would happen. Now a press release (found via The Film Stage) has revealed that South African director Ralph Ziman (Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema) will take over the project. In addition, Maleficent and Underworld: Awakening star India Eisley and The Great Gatsby and Flipped star Callan McAuliffe have both joined the cast. More below! The story doesn't depart too much from the original anime as it follows a young woman (to be played by India Eisley) living in a failed state, post-financial collapse, where the corrupt security force profits on the trafficking of young women. Her father, a police officer,...

As you’ll recall, director David R. Ellis was in South Africa doing pre-production on “Kite”, his adaptation of the Japanese anime by Yasuomi Umetsu when he suddenly passed away last month. The film was set to star Samuel L. Jackson, who was reuniting with Ellis after having worked together on the viral hit (but as it turns out, not box office hit) “Snakes on a Plane”. Well the show must go on, and the producers have hired a replacement director in local filmmaker Ralph Ziman (“Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema”), who will take over directing the film in Johannesburg, with production set to begin sometime later this month. Jackson will remain on the film, and will be joined by young castmembers India Eisley (below, last seen playing Kate Beckinsale’s daughter in “Underworld: Awakening”) and Callan McAuliffe (top, of “I am Number Four” fame). Unlike the sex and violence-heavy offering of the Japanese anime,...

In my interview with Samuel L. Jackson in December, ahead of the release of Django Unchained, he mentioned that one of the projects on his slate was a live-action adaptation of a Japanese anime film called Kite (Yasuomi Umetsu’s 1998 work), which was to be directed by David R. Ellis (who also directed Mr Jackson in Snakes On A Plane). However, as some of you may know, David R. Ellis died on January 7 (this year). Taking over for him, revealed this morning, is South African director Ralph Ziman. Ziman's last film was 2008's Gangster's Paradise: Jerusalema, a film I wrote about on my old blog (S&A wasn't around at the time),...

South African filmmaker Ralph Ziman ("Gangster’s Paradise: Jerusalema") has come onboard to helm the live action remake of Yasuomi Umetsu’s 1998 Japanese anime "Kite".
At the same time, Callan McAuliffe ("Underground: The Julian Assange Story") and India Eisley ("Maleficent") have joined the cast which includes the previously announced Samuel L. Jackson.
The story is a character-driven actioneer about a young woman living in a failed state, post-financial collapse, where the corrupt security force profits in human trafficking.
When her police father is slain, she vows to track the murderer down with the help of her father's ex-partner - unaware he is the man who had her father killed.
Ziman replaces the late David R. Ellis, and filming aims to begin in Johannesburg later this month.
Moisés Cosio, Alejandro Saevich, Anant Singh and Brian Cox are producing.

After two decades working as a stunt man in movies like Smokey and the Bandit, Scarface, and Road House, David R. Ellis moved into the director's seat on the animal-centered Disney movie Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco. From there he went on to helm a string of movies that blended horror and action, but undoubtedly is best known for the willful insanity that is Snakes on a Plane. Ellis' next venture, which reunited him with Snakes on a Plane star Samuel L. Jackson, was similarly wild and ambitious. In 2011, word hit that he was developing a live-action remake of the 1998 anime Kite. Unfortunately, Ellis died earlier this month, leaving the future of this remake uncertain. Preproduction for principal photography in Johannesburg, South Africa, was already underway, so producers scrambled to find a replacement for Ellis. Deadline reports they found one in South African director Ralph Ziman, who helmed...

A couple of months on from the news that Samuel L. Jackson was aboard, anime adaptation Kite has added two new cast members and a new director to its roster. India Eisley and Callan McAuliffe will play significant roles in the exuberantly violent live-action remake. And following the tragic recent death of David R. Ellis, it's now Ralph Ziman who'll be calling the shots. The original anime, replete with copious gore and very dodgy sex, involves a young girl whose parents are murdered, who is adopted and turned into an assassin and sex slave by the corrupt detectives on the case. It's sort of like Hanna crossed with Lilya 4Ever.How much of that source will translate to the new version remains to be seen, but Variety's synopsis gives us, "a young woman living in a failed state after the financial collapse, where a corrupt security force profits on the trafficking of young women.

Ralph Ziman's reboot of Yasuomi Umetsu’s 1998 Kate anime has landed Callan McAuliffe, Samuel L. Jackson and India Eisley. Deadline reports that the film which originally had the late David R. Ellis of Snakes on a Plane on board as helmer, is in pre-production phase in Johannesburg with South African director Ziman helming the film produced by Anant Singh and Brian Cox. The original anime followed a school girl called Sawa who's orphaned in her early teenage years as her parents become victims of a brutal double murder. She's then taken in by detectives Akai and Kanie who are investigating the crime, and act as her guardians. Akai then starts a sexual relationship with Sawa, turning her into his sex slave while under his guardianship. Director David R. Ellis, of Snakes On A Plane fame, died in March 2013. Sarah remembers why his films were kind of great…
Just a quick update here: we've looked back at Snakes On A Plane, Ellis' highest profile film, in more detail here.
Usually, if a film isn’t screened for critics ahead of its release, it’s for a good reason. It’s because it’s terrible. But back in 2006, when Snakes On A Plane wasn’t shown to the press, it wasn’t because it was bad. It was because it didn’t matter. Nothing any critic said about Snakes On A Plane would affect whether the public went to see it or not. They’d already made up their minds for themselves, based solely on its wonderful title.
Luckily, the film pretty much lived up to the promise of its title. It was bold,...

Earlier this month David R. Ellis passed away while preparing to shoot his next film in South Africa and now this week it appears that we've lost another well-liked genre filmmaker. British director Michael Winner has reportedly died at his home in Kensington, west London, after a long battle with liver cancer. Winner was probably best known for his work with Charles Bronson including the first three Death Wish films and The Mechanic (which was recently remade with Jason Statham). He was also a well-known personality outside of the film industry, acting as a restaurant critic for the Sunday Times and also starring in a series of commercials for insurance company esure. He was 77 years old. Winner's career as a director spanned almost four decades, starting with the crime thriller Shoot to Kill and the comedy Some Like it Cool before moving on to a series of Oliver Reed comedies.

Former stuntman and director of Snakes on a Plane
The brazenly trashy, cheap-and-cheerful B-movie is more or less defunct in modern cinema. One of its few authentic latter-day practitioners was the film-maker David R Ellis, who has been found dead at the age of 60 in a hotel in South Africa, where he was preparing to make a live-action version of the violent anime Kite.
Ellis came to widespread attention in 2006 when he directed Snakes on a Plane, the exploitation action thriller with a title that doubled as its own synopsis. Samuel L Jackson played an FBI agent on board a flight packed with venomous snakes planted to kill the witness who is in his care. There have been dumber and more precarious murder plots in the movies, but not many.

1.) Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the latest name to join Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. His character, a cocky gambler named Johnny, is considered one of the film's leads and was originally offered to Johnny Depp. "I love how the first move uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality," Gordon-Levitt said of the project. "Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez." Deadline also expects a few "tough guy actors" to be added shortly, with Josh Brolin considered one good possibility. As for Gordon-Levitt, the deal takes him out of the running for a few other roles he has been mulling over. One of those was the lead in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, which now has Jim Sturgess, Zachary Levi and John Krasinski among those left in contention. 2.) Speaking of Gordon-Levitt, he passed...
