Costume designer Lynn Falconer has many credits under her fashionable brown leather belt, having worked on such movies as Oculus, Straw Dogs, Before I Wake, The Alphabet Killer and Silent House. Lynn’s latest film, currently still in theaters, Ouija: Origin of Evil presented a new challenge though, as she was given the task of recreating the style of characters living in Los Angeles in 1967. To do this as authentically as possible, while adding her own flare, she visited numerous costume houses, estate sales and flea markets choosing to go down the more classic avenue rather than florals, which didn’t fit the dark vibe of the film. She also drew on inspiration from her own childhood, picking pieces she wore during that time. We spoke...

Set in the 1960s, Mike Flanagan's Ouija: Origin of Evil features a vintage setting for its scares. Playing a key role in bringing the film's bygone era to life is costume designer Lynn Falconer. With Flanagan's latest movie now in theaters, we caught up with Falconer for our latest Q&A feature, and she also provided us with two characters sketches that she did for the film.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Lynn. Were there any specific challenges or rewarding moments that you experienced while working on a horror film set in the 1960s?
Lynn Falconer: Specifically rewarding is finding a funky piece of wardrobe from the past and breathing new life into it by reimagining that piece on a character. I shopped thrift stores, boutiques, and estate sales to find the ’60s period, but while I had a firm rudder for accuracy,...

Director Mike Flanagan chats to us about making a sequel to Ouija, and those Halloween rumours...
Many horror fans were unsurprised but unattracted by the prospect of a sequel to Ouija... until it was announced who would be writing and directing. Mike Flanagan has very quickly become a bit of a star in the horror world, and deservedly so. His films are brilliantly well-made, his ideas are complex, and he's got great storytelling instincts.
And, for what it's worth, his Ouija sequel is actually a prequel, being set in the late 60s. But it's not just your typical period piece where a setting in time is evoked through costume, production design, music and, if you're lucky, the cinematography. Flanagan took one wild step beyond with his movie, and I started by asking him about this when we talked last week.
Tell me if I'm mad. I saw this film digitally but.
