This weekend’s onslaught of smaller new films will have awards contenders and big names to jostle with at the box office. Awards hopefuls Foxcatcher and The Homesman begin their theatrical runs in limited New York and L.A. rollouts, with the former a likely winner in the first weekend when the numbers come in Sunday. The films from Sony Pictures Classics and Roadside Attractions, respectively, tell particularly American stories, though from very different eras. The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart took time off in 2013 to work on his directorial debut. Open Road’s Rosewater, starring Gael García Bernal, will begin its theatrical rollout this weekend. It will be the biggest opener of this weekend’s cadre of specialty newcomers, playing in several hundred locations in the U.S. and Canada. Actor Chris Lowell also makes his filmmaking launch with Beside Still Waters. The project had smooth sailing until it came time for distribution,...

FX's latest drama Tyrant is a strange case.
The drama (premiering Tuesday at 10/9c) stars Adam Rayner as Bassam "Barry" Al-Fayeed, the second son of a dictator (Nasser Faris) who left his homeland — the fictional Middle Eastern country of Abuddin — and started his own family in California. But when Barry's wife Molly (Jennifer Finnigan) urges him to return to Abuddin after 20 years for his nephew's wedding, Barry is quickly sucked back into the family drama he tried to escape, most notably by his loose-cannon brother Jamal (Ashraf Barhom).
Summer TV: Check out all the must-see new shows
Although the show's attempt to lift the veil on life in the Middle East is the most compelling aspect of the project, it's also perhaps the most problematic when it comes to selling a commercial television show. But the show's creative team...

I’ve written a lot about Showtime’s Homeland for ScottFeinberg.com, as it’s one of the best dramas on TV.
From discussing the the drama’s incredible pacing to giving you reasons to watch, I’ve championed the series since its 2011 debut. Each week leaves me with my jaw on the floor in all of the best ways — except for last week’s chapter, “Broken Hearts.”
[Spoiler Alert] The episode largely followed our heroine Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), as terrorist Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban) abducted and held her hostage. During this time, Nazir negotiated with his supposed follower Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) to get the serial code for Vice President William Walden’s (Jamey Sheridan) pacemaker. Nazir’s plan was to remotely manipulate the vice president’s pacemaker and kill him, and the scheme actually worked.
So why am I so down on the hour?...

"Homeland," are you trying to give us a heart attack?
The psychological thriller turned the dial all the way up on the suspense in Season 2's third episode, "State of Independence."
The tension builds from the opening scene at the Beirut airport. When security officials illegally confiscate a memory chip from Saul's (Mandy Patinkin) briefcase, it seems Carrie (Claire Danes) will never see Brody's suicide video. His bait-and-switch makes us smile -- but only for a moment, because back in D.C., the CIA is ripping out Carrie's heart and stomping on it for good measure. After she basically saves America and serves up the world's greatest terrorist, Abu Nazir (Navid Negahban), the agency shuts her out of the debriefing for the successful mission.
Meanwhile, just hours before Brody (Damian Lewis) is scheduled to make an important speech at his wife's (Morena Baccarin) fundraising event, that irksome Roya (Zuleikha Robinson...

"Homeland"'s Season 2 premieres Sunday (Sept. 30), and we're going deep undercover. That's intelligence code for "We're sitting on the sofa the whole weekend in anticipation of critically acclaimed, Emmy-sweeping thriller's return. "
It's not too late to catch up: Showtime is airing a marathon of Season 1 -- all 12 epsiodes -- Saturday starting at noon Et. Of course, you can always catch it online and DVD, but do you really want to be late to this party? (We're looking at you, "Breaking Bad" newcomers.)
If you can't wait for the first episode (or the second, which we've seen and are still finding pieces of our brain in the living room), please enjoy these spoiler photos from the first three episodes.
We already knew Carrie (Claire Danes returns to Beirut to assist the CIA with a crucial mission, but why is Brody (Damian Lewis paying another visit to the tailor (Nasser Faris)? What is Abu Nazir plotting now?...
