Interviewed by Jonathan Weichsel
Over the last few years Steven Chang has emerged as one of the most active members of the indie horror community. There is no question that Mr. Chang is deeply passionate about the various artists that he promotes through his Facebook "spotlights," as well as his various Facebook pages. I also like to believe that the artists Chang supports appreciate his boundless enthusiasm for them and their work. I got the chance recently to interview Chang via Facebook's messenger app. You can read our discussion below.
Jonathan Weichsel: How would you describe your role within the indie horror industry? Are you a promoter? Networker? What is your title?
Steven Chang: I am mainly a promoter who does networking when events are available. Such as horror cons or film festivals.
Jonathan Weichsel: Cool! So, how did you first get into indie horror?

We just can't stay away from Freakland, the Spanish fanzine and web store specializing in custom horror replicas, busts and other one-of-a-kind collectibles... and we're back to share some new and returning items that any cult & genre film and TV collector would be thrilled to find under the tree this holiday season. Back in stock for a limited time is the detailed 1:1 scale “Crite” replica (above left) from the 1986 cult classic Critters, measuring nearly a foot high, molded from latex and leather, hand-painted and fitted with false hair. It's available for preorder, along with a smaller version (above right) measuring around 7” tall. Fans of the creepy sci-fi series V should be interested in a couple of new arrivals: a “V Survival Kit” including a full-size blaster replica, sculpted in polyresin and hand-painted, with a packet of faux “V-Dust,” bio-weapon of the human resistance (no, you can't eat it). “The primary goal of Under The Scares [in which—full disclosure—this writer appeared] was to help young filmmakers make good movies without throwing their money away,” says director Steve Villeneuve. The follow-up, he explains, “will focus on the future of independent horror. In this film, I want to show how the evolution of technology has impacted the viewing experience of independent cinema, and the ability of these filmmakers to monetize their product since the 1970s.”
Already announced as part of Independent Scares are such genre veterans as Glass Eye Pix topper Larry Fessenden (pictured above), The Blair Witch Project and Lovely Molly’s Eduardo Sanchez, longtime producer/director Fred Olen Ray, Andrew van den Houten of Headspace, The Woman and others and Independent-International honcho Sam Sherman (pictured right). The Orphan Killer is the brainchild of writer/director Matt Farnsworth. The film is unique in that it's generated an international buzz of interest without ever having had an official release.
Currently marketing the film himself online, Farnsworth has huge plans for The Orphan Killer (review here) and its superstar slasher, Marcus Miller.
"The Orphan Killer is a psychotic horror movie," Farnsworth said. "It's hard to pinpoint exactly what you're going to create when you begin making a film. You've got an idea going in but it never turns out like the exact initial concept. The inspiration for Tok was partly my first film, Iowa…I really liked the practical F/X on Iowa. There was a throat slash, finger cut off, and other practical F/X used. I thought it was amazing when I saw it on film and the blood reminded me of the slashers I saw as a kid in the 80's.

The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

Hey there, interplanetary slaves, it's time for our Fourth of July edition of the show! I thought the guest for Independence Day should be iconic. He should be legendary... and he should want to sing "The Star Spangled Banner."
So I chose the incredible, and incredibly kind, Angus Scrimm of the Phantasm series! Angus was nothing but a joy to chat with. We talked about his beginnings, plenty about the Phantasm series, as well as his latest projects, John Dies at the End and Disciples. Thom Surprenant was the only "terror team" member who could join this show with me, and we were nothing but honored, and yes, we were total "fanboys" at times.
Next week kicks off our partnership with Cosmic Toast and the movie Raze! I am calling this venture Fight or Die...In July! We kick off our events with one of the actresses from the film,...

So this week's edition of The Dungeon Show was another incredible one, and I can't believe the show went off without a hitch! First, my partner Amy Lynes and I spoke to creator and director of The Orphan Killer, Matt Farnsworth, about the success of his financial search for a Behind The Murder documentary. We are so happy and proud of our friends, Matt and Diane Foster.
Next we were visited by the Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska, and what a crazy conversation that turned out to be! We spoke about body modifications, full frontal nudity, and of course their upcoming movie,...

Hey there Fiends! Another great show this week in The Dungeon! This time around we had quite a historic episode. The show was called "It's A Henry Kind Of Night!"
Why you ask? Because we had both men from one of the greatest horror movies ever in the house! That's right. Our special guests were stars of 1986's Henry: Portrait Of a Serial Killer, Tom Towles and call-in guest Michael Rooker!
We spoke to Tom about everything from screenwriting, photography, playing a "dirtbag", along with every single film in the man's arsenal! He was a hell of alot of fun! Then we were graced once again with the presence of our ol' pal, Michael Rooker. This would be the fifth time Rooker has appeared on the show. So why did we have a Henry episode? Anniversary? No. It was just because we love the movie that damn much!

Hey there, Fiends! Oh man! Tons to mention this time around! First of all, I just returned from the killer Motor City Nightmares convention, and what can I say? It was not only a kick-ass time, but it also made some nightmares come true.
First of all, I met one of my absolute favorite people in cinema, P.J. Soles, and I was a little taken aback by her presence, to be quite honest. It was truly surreal. While there I also set up show dates with class acts such as Bill Moseley, Ken Foree, Tony Todd, and Matt Farnsworth and Diane Foster - the creators of the brutal indie masterpiece called The Orphan Killer! Having finally watched the film all the way through, all I can say is holy shit! If you have Not seen the Orphan Killer, please do yourselves a huge favor - seek it out!
Now, on to the show!

One film festival I'm bound and determined to make it to one of these years is the South African HorrorFest, but for now I'll just have to live vicariously through those of you who live close enough to attend. And after taking a look at this year's lineup, I'm pretty sure that if you are in the area, you won't want to miss it!
Growing into the country's ultimate Halloween event covering indie, new and classic movies, short films, music, literature and a range of Halloween festivities, 2011 marks the annual South African HorrorFest's lucky 7th year! It runs 26 October through 4 November.
Almost each of the exciting feature films and short films make their South African theatrical premieres. The Makabra Ensemble will also debut their Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde movie soundtrack performance, live to the screening of this 1920 silent classic.
In addition to the colourful audience Halloween dress-up event linked up with the live soundtrack show,...

Founder of Shriekfest Denise Gossett was voted one of the top women in Horror for a reason. She puts together one of the biggest and longest running genre festivals out there. She's such a sweet and down to earth lady that it's hard to believe that she's responsible for bringing so much horror into the world. This year was no different.
2011's line-up of films was stellar. Some were more well received than others, but overall it was a pretty impressive batch of feature and short films alike as well as fascinating and enlightening Q&A's after some of the better films. Feature films like The Dead Inside, Absentia, Pig and short films like Certified and Negative Image simply wowed the audience and left people talking long after the screenings were over.
These weren't your run-of-the-mill studio films like some other genre festivals. These were genuinely groundbreaking,...

Marcus Miller is a bad man. The newest cold-blooded (and I mean cold-blooded, this is guy is batshit crazy!) killer to hit the silver screen is the star of Matt Farnsworth's violent new film The Orphan Killer. And he doesn't fuck around.
As you'll see by the trailer below, The Orphan Killer is a very Halloween-esque film. But if you're going to model yourself after something, why not one of the most successful independent films of all time?
So what do we know about this new slasher, Marcus Miller? Just judging by the trailer, he's really, really brutal. I would make the argument that he swings an axe with as much aggression and bad intentions as anyone I've ever seen (but I think that nun had it coming).
The Orphan Killer was written and directed by Matt Farnsworth (he also plays Mike in the film) and stars David Backus as Miller.

A Full Fathom 5 production, Sibling: Marcus Miller the Orphan Killer is getting set to make the rounds at several film festivals in Los Angeles. Smmtok involves childhood trauma and the character Marcus Miller turning from innocent youth to cold-blooded killer. The first trailer is very graphic, very cutting edge, and very not safe for work. Several characters are taken care of by Marcus' favourite tool, the axe. Others endure his torturer, while Marcus searches for some type of murderous resolution to the death of his parents. The trailer is inside, but this is over eighteen material folks.
The synopsis for Sibling: Marcus Miller the Orphan Killer:
"The intense story of a brother and his younger sister who witness their parents' violent murder at a very young age. The girl, Audrey, is adopted by a loving single father, while her brother, Marcus, is left to languish in an orphanage where he is abused.

Iowa tells the story of two people who recieve an unexpected inheritance and use it to set themselves up in the meth business. Think a meaner leaner more graphic vision of tweaking than Breaking Bad and you have a good idea what to expect. Trouble is you’d probably also expect the insight and artistry of a Requiem for a Dream or Trainspotting given the quotes on the box and instead what you get is nowhere near that developed. There is some gorgeous cinematography and the performances are great- especially the ones involving the physical and emotional effects of drug abuse. But the two aspects never seem to mesh. We get to see the heartland but I’m not sure we ever connect it to what drives these people to make such devastatingly poor choices. There are some short extras in the form of two documentaries “Poor Mans...

- Iowa is like a drug-induced walk through the Mid-West. In this sleepy town full of shady characters two young lovers begin cooking up drugs and selling it out of a ranch house, hoping to get enough money to leave their world behind. Soon they find themselves escaping reality, on the run and heading on a downward spiral. The story revolves around a young man (Matt Farnsworth) whose mother (Rosanna Arquette) is plotting to kill him because she wants to live alone with her boyfriend, a local cop. So the young man runs away with girlfriend (Diane Foster) and leaves his girlfriend’s father (John Savage) behind. Together they shack up and bring in two more friends to start their Meth lab. The soon takes effect and everything falls apart. The most intense scenes in the film are the ones where the effects of Meth are displayed using every camera trick in the book.
