“I remember hearing music in my head since I was about three years old,” recalls Kurt Farquhar, the composer for The History Channel’s miniseries “Abraham Lincoln.” “It seemed weird to me, and as I was growing up it never really stopped. Music is going on in my head right now. It’s a lovely score. I wrote my first symphony when I was 12 years old.” Watch the exclusive interview with Farquhar above.

Farquhar describes scoring “Abraham Lincoln” as a “rather lengthy process.” The a three-part historical war drama was directed by Malcolm Venville and includes documentary-style interviews from historians and other contributors, including President Barack Obama. “Malcolm Venville is just a genius,” Farquhar says. “He was so passionate about the project. He knew what he wanted to hear. He had incredible ideas of things to inspire me. We got together and just chatted.

There’s nothing like validation from your peers, especially in Hollywood, but seeing your name emblazoned in a front-end credit on TV is something music supervisors have found elusive — even when the show centers around, or is chock full of, music.
”I worked on a very music-intensive show and asked for a front-end credit because the show was based around music and dance,” says Jen Malone, who this year won a Guild of Music Supervisors (Gms) Award for her work on “Euphoria” (the HBO series shows a title card in lieu of main credits). “The studio said the Directors Guild of America will not allow it because they consider a music supervisor to be a technical credit. Even the TV Academy now recognizes our work with an Emmy category so I’d hope that the DGA reevaluates their stance.”
Guild president Joel C. High puts the big picture into perspective vis-à-vis the small screen.

Veteran publicist Beth Krakower, a respected and tireless promoter for media-music composers and soundtracks, died Wednesday morning at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 46.
Krakower was beloved in the film-music community as a smart, kind and eloquent spokesperson for composers and their projects. Among her clients were “Mission: Impossible” composer Lalo Schifrin (who was just announced yesterday as the recipient of an honorary Oscar) as well as composers Bear McCreary, Blake Neely, Jeff Beal, Cliff Martinez, Kurt Farquhar and Ryan Shore, among others.
Beal, who won Emmys for his TV music with Krakower as publicist, wrote earlier today about “being in her orbit of joy, dedicated work, and brilliance.” He spoke of “working so hard for so many of us collectively.” Neely called her “a wonderful human [who] lived life the right way: optimism, kindness, laughter and love.” Shore referred to her as “passionate,...

Updated: With Wednesday, Thursday and Friday events. Captain Marvel, The Guardians of the Galaxy and whoever is alive from The Avengers won’t be showing up in San Diego, but there will be plenty of other big screen rivals to keep the temperature at a scorching level in Hall H.
At this point in time, many film screenings are oddly missing from the lineup, except for kiddie pic Teen Titans Go! To the Movies! on Friday. Perhaps there will be more as they’re often announced at the last minute or suddenly during the confab (Read Lionsgate’s Blair Witch). Comic-Con has traditionally been a successful launch pad for such fan faves as Sausage Party, Star Trek Beyond, The Visit, Annabelle: Creation and Don’t Breathe. Don’t worry, on the TV side there’s the AMC premiere of Better Call Saul season 4.

Music for television is now as diverse as it has ever been — from traditional orchestra to electronica, from cool jazz to hip-hop beats. That’s partly the result of the vast increase in production in recent years, but also a matter of showrunners’ wide-ranging musical tastes.
The diversity extends to the composers themselves. Women and people of color, for example, are far more visible in TV’s musical community than in the feature-film world. There are multiple worthy Emmy contenders in the two main composition categories: music for a series and music for a limited series, movie or special. Here we’ve singled out a few of them.
Kurt Farquhar, composer for the CW’s superhero show “Black Lightning,” calls his work “neo-urban scoring: a mix of orchestral score, sound design, contemporary urban/club music, R&B and jazz.” Farquhar has added even more diverse sounds during its first season,...

This review originally ran last November when 96 Minutes played at The St. Louis International Film Festival
Racism is never an easy topic to tackle in any medium, so when you add class warfare and the peer pressure of gang culture to the story, it triples the difficulty of pulling off a believable and sincere film. Against the odds, this is precisely what first time writer and director Aimee Lagos has accomplished with 96 Minutes. Inspired by true events, 96 Minutes is a story of four young lives, each of them on separate paths which violently collide.
Brittany Snow (The Vicious Kind) plays Carley, an upper-middle class hard-working white college student studying law. Evan Ross (The Family Tree) plays Dre, a young black man from a gritty part of town whose determined not to fall into the gangster life, despite retaining his friendship with Kevin, played by Jonathan Michael Trautmann, a 16-year old...
