There may still be people unaware of the anarchic joy of Tex Avery, so we’re making it our business to enlighten them. This third Volume of Tex’s MGM cartoons has both variety and some top favorites, plus his first, the intense Blitz Wolf and his last, the surreal Cellbound. Plus the insane King Size Canary, the most endearing Droopy cartoon and the minimalist wonder Billy Boy. You won’t believe they showed Avery the door, and let him lend his talents to TV commercials! The disc came out last October but it’s still worth crowing about now.

Film historian Tim Millard has launched an addictive new blog titled "The Extras" in which he interviews various people in the movie industry. Millard is a former Warner Brothers Home Entertainment veteran who went on to create many of the "extras" (i.e bonus content) found on popular home video releases, hence the title of the podcast. For a high profile launch for the podcast, Millard turned to an appropriate interview subject: George Feltenstein, with whom he worked with for many years at WB. The average retro movie fan may not know Feltenstein by name, although he is a legend in the home video industry, but anyone who appreciates how classic and cult movies are made available to the general public...

Vintage high-end Film Noir from the classic year 1947! Low Mileage too — this long cut hasn’t been seen since the early laserdisc days. I didn’t know it needed restoring until George Feltenstein talked about it a couple of years ago. It’s a domestic noir crossed with Double Indemnity with a little An American Tragedy thrown in for good measure. Normally squeaky-clean Robert Young throws his hat into the ring with the lowest of noir hero-villains: in this one he double-crosses three terrific noir leading ladies. We can now spell ‘Unspeakable Cad’ with the initial Ry. The most amazing thing about The Warner Film Archive’s new disc is that it restores a full fifteen minutes — Eddie Muller screened They Won’t on his Noir City show not long ago, with no mention that it was the short, edited version.

MGM’s old-fashioned Irving Berlin musical has superior songs and powerful performances, especially that of Betty Hutton. She gets plenty loud and rambunctious, but it fits the ‘big’ Annie Oakley character. And the talented, under-appreciated Howard Keel really fires up the screen with her in songs like ‘Anything You Can Do.’ The Wac disc contains plenty of George Feltenstein- rescued unused audio material, plus footage … depressing footage … of Judy Garland’s attempt in the leading role. Yep, the show may be PC minefield begging for a Cancel Culture intervention, but if it goes we’ll have to put most of Hollywood film history in a landfill.

We are only a few weeks away from the geeky awesomeness that is San Diego Comic-Con, and studios are lining up to show off their upcoming slate of projects. Today, Warner Bros. announced details on what they plan on bringing to the show, including the DC Comics based TV shows, Batman anniversary celebration, and first looks at the final Hobbit film and Mad Max Fury Road.
If you're planning your Sdcc weekend around what could be announced, then these schedules will come in very handy for you. WB has now announced their schedule of events and broken down what they expect to show at this year's event. From the sounds of it we'll be getting our first teasers for The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies and, thankfully, Mad Max: Fury Road.
While some are wondering at the absence of any mention of Batman v. Superman, I wouldn't get too upset just yet.

Taking one of Hollywood's most beloved Golden Age classics like "The Wizard of Oz" and converting it to both 3D and IMAX is a heady undertaking, and one that even "Oz" experts weren't sure would work. However, on September 20, the restored "Oz" will open at IMAX theaters around the world, including the newly renamed and restored Tcl Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd, where it debuted on August 15, 1939. The release is timed to the film's 75th anniversary.
At a presentation September 9 at the Chinese Theater, officials from IMAX and Warner Bros., who now own the MGM musical, spoke about the painstaking, 16-month process by which a movie made with 1939 technology was updated for today.
"I was frightened we were taking a national treasure and I wondered, can you do it poetic justice?" said George Feltenstein, who oversees programming, presentation and marketing for the Warner Archive Collection. "I went from being skeptical to being a praiser.

There was talk earlier this year that it wasn't in the studios' best interest to continue to release classic films on DVD/Blu-ray as the demand for them was dwindling and the cost of restoration was climbing. The article in question even quotes Warner Home Video senior vice president George Feltenstein saying "most of the studios have pretty much said 'Screw it, we're out of here, we're not going to do this.'" Strangely enough, it just so happens Warner Home Video is the home entertainment studio releasing the very first Alfred Hitchcock film on Blu-ray, 50 years after its theatrical release with a restoration price tag I have read cost upwards of $1 million. Perhaps studios are slowing down the release of their classic films, but with Warner's recent Blu-ray release of The Wizard of Oz, the upcoming release of Gone With the Wind and this release of North by Northwest...

If you weren't a fan of the Bens on "At the Movies" get ready for a 180 as the new team made up of Chicago Tribune's Michael Phillips and the New York Times' A.O. Scott as the video to the right gives you your first look at the new movie reviewing duo. The video blatantly says to me, "Sorry about the joke we played on you with Lyons and Mankiewicz, here are two guys who know what they're talking about." Lionsgate let everyone know via Twitter that Kick-Ass will arrive on April 16, 2010 and Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables will hit theaters on August 20, 2010. Then we learn Star Trek will be heading back to IMAX this Friday for a two week run. And we also learn Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs a tire-larigot has been picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. Just like Avatar, tickets for The Twilight Saga: New Moon are now...

I have seen the future of classic movies on DVD, and it's exciting.
I recently spent hours sampling titles from Warner Archive, a new initiative that makes dozens of hard-to-find old movies available on demand -- on disc as well as via download.
Warner is initially offering 150 never-on-dvd titles, with at least 20 more to be added every month, for $19.95 each ($14.95 for download). Vintage TV shows and theatrical live-action shorts are to be added in coming months.
Available exclusively at wbstore.com, they span the 1920s (Greta Garbo in "Love") to the 1980s (Kristy McNichol in...

When DVDs began to replace VHS tapes, many film-lovers couldn't wait to see their favorite movies in a better format - a digital format. But the studios were releasing old movies on DVD at a slow rate, sometimes waiting for an anniversary as an excuse to do so. And currently, there are still plenty of classics that have yet to be converted. But that's all about to change. Warner Bros' home entertainment division has come up with a plan to allow custom ordering of 150 films never before released on DVD. Dubbed the Warner Archive Collection, an online vault of films including 1942's "Once Upon a Honeymoon," starring Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers, and 1947's "Possessed," with Clark Gable and Joan Crawford, can be tapped by consumers visiting WarnerArchive.com. Upon the selection and purchase of a title -- at $19.95 per disc -- Warners will burn, package and ship the DVD...

Warner Home Video is gearing up for one of its most ambitious catalog releases ever.
How the West Was Won, the sprawling 1962 MGM Western epic boasting an ensemble cast that includes Henry Fonda, John Wayne, Gregory Peck and James Stewart, will be released Aug. 26 in three newly restored and remastered versions.
What made the project a bit more cumbersome than others is the fact that West is one of just two narrative feature films produced in the original Cinerama three-panel widescreen process, a costly proposition abandoned after just one other simultaneously shot MGM feature, "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm."
During its initial theatrical run, West -- a winner of three Oscars, including best original screenplay -- was shown in theaters specially equipped with three synchronized projectors on extra-wide, slightly curved screens. Later, it was presented on traditional screens with the three separate panels optically joined to form a standard widescreen image, leaving two vertical "join lines" clearly visible on the screen.
The join lines are noticeable as well on the original DVD edition of the film that Warner released in July 1998, barely a year into the format's life cycle.
The film has been a consistent seller for Warner, and George Feltenstein, the division's senior vp classic catalog marketing, has long wanted to produce a special edition.

In an unprecedented move to exploit AOL Time Warner's vast library of classic film titles across several home entertainment venues, the company will let America Online members vote this summer to determine a block of five films that will air in the fall on Turner Classic Movies and will also be released on DVD via Warner Home Video in January. The media conglomerate plans to offer up 20 classic films from its library of more than 6,000 films to AOL members from June 23-July 1 through a varied media campaign using virtually every AOL Time Warner media outlet. Then it will it up to consumers to decide which five classic titles will make it to air on the TCM channel and be packaged on DVD, complete with such bonus materials as commentary tracks, TCM celebrity documentaries and related shorts. The new consumer-driven marketing approach to releasing AOL Time Warner's classic films using both cable and DVD outlets, tagged DVD Decision 2003, was the brainchild of WHV senior vp classic catalog George Feltenstein, who came to WHV from Turner Entertainment Co. just six months ago. "Consumers are constantly asking us when many of our classic titles will be released on DVD," Feltenstein said. "And in this promotion, they get to choose which ones come out first."...
