Nominations for the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards have been announced with the surprise of two international titles — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” — the first time two international titles have been nominated by the guild.
The lineup includes many of the Oscars’ usual suspects as voting for nominations is underway. Rounding out the noms are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives” and “Poor Things.”
After being shut out of the SAG nominations, indie distributor A24 is the only studio to land two films in the top category with “Past Lives” and “The Zone of Interest.”
When the Academy expanded its best picture lineup from five to 10 nominees in 2009, the PGA duplicated the move. Since then, the guild has averaged eight of its 10 nominees translating to an Oscar Best Picture nod. However, last year saw only seven,...

The 2023 Producers Guild of America Award nominations stunned on Thursday with a shocking inclusion of the Brendan Fraser best-actor vehicle “The Whale” making the lineup, in addition to four sequels — “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”
A24 led the tally for all movie studios with the Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” joining “The Whale” in best picture. The animation live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” made the list of animated features, which also included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “Turning Red.”
Rounding out the 10 films for best picture was “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “The Fabelmans” and “Tár.” The top award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, is a strong predictor for the best picture Oscar.

“Coda” has been named the best produced film of 2021 at the Producers Guild Awards, throwing the Oscar race for Best Picture into complete turmoil only eight days before that show takes place on March 27.
The win comes at the only awards show besides the Oscars that uses ranked-choice or preferential voting in its best picture category, and it reinforced a feeling that the longtime Oscar favorite, “The Power of the Dog,” might be too divisive to win under a system that looks for a film with broad support.
Coupled with its SAG Awards win for ensemble, a category in which “The Power of the Dog” wasn’t even nominated, “Coda” now has to be considered a very strong Oscar contender and maybe even the new front runner, even though it is missing some of the nominations once thought necessary for a Best Picture winner.

A weekend trio of big wins for Netflix at the DGA, BAFTA and Critics Choice awards has given Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” the gas required to make it over the finish line. That’s if it can keep its closest competitors — “Belfast” from Kenneth Branagh and “Coda” from Siân Heder — at bay.
The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which is the top prize from the PGA Awards, has been one of the most vital and telling precursors from all major guilds. In 2009, both the PGA and the Oscars switched the voting for their highest honor to a preferential ballot system. In terms of films perceived to be divisive with audiences, PGA has become the litmus test for whether or not those contenders have the goods to win.

A few minutes ago, the Producers Guild Awards concluded, and with that, we can now say with a fair amount of certainty that Nomadland is in the driver’s seat for Best Picture. The Academy Awards could still potentially throw a curveball, but the odds don’t favor that. Rather, it sure seems like this movie is the Oscar pick. Sit tight for the rest of the guilds to chime in, but if you had to pick a film to repeat with the Academy, Nomadland is the one, especially after PGA… Here’s all of the winners from the Producers Guild Awards: Darryl F. “Nomadland” look home the top film prize at the 2021 Producers Guild Awards Wednesday, bringing it closer to a Best Picture win. The winner of the PGA Awards’ top prize has historically been a strong indicator of which film will will go on to win the Best Picture Oscar. Since 1989, the PGA winner has matched up with the top Oscar 21 out of 31 times. It happened in 2018 with “Green Book,” but not last year: “1917” won at the 2020 PGAs, but the Academy Award for Best Picture went to “Parasite.”
This year, 10 movies competed for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures (see the full list of nominees and winners below). Seven 2021 PGA nominees for the top prize are also 2021 Oscar Best Picture nominees: “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound Of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

Indie studios and streamers dominated the nominations for the 32nd annual Producers Guild of Awards, which were announced on Monday by the Producers Guild of America.
Netflix and Amazon each landed three films on the list of 10, with Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” making the list along with Amazon’ “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “Sound of Metal.”
The nominees also included A24’s “Minari,” Searchlight’s “Nomadland,” Focus Features’ “Promising Young Woman” and the sole film from a major studio, Warner Bros.’ “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

As the film industry’s long, excruciating march to the Academy Awards toils on, TV continues to surf painlessly in its wake.
On Saturday, Hollywood’s producers took center stage, with the Producers Guild of America Awards held at the Hollywood Palladium. While the ceremony celebrates both film and television, its reputation as a significant indicator in the Oscar Best Picture race often means that TV takes a backseat to its big screen brethren.
All the same, the celebration featured seven TV categories, in addition to honoring several luminaries of the medium, among them Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and “Grace and Frankie” creator Marta Kauffman.
Many of the evening’s awards served as an echo of the Emmy awards, with the producing teams for HBO’s limited series “Chernobyl” and Amazon Prime’s comedy series “Fleabag” repeating their series accolades from September.
But the big news of the evening came from the drama series category,...

Moments ago, the Producers Guild of America finished up their annual awards show, highlighted by the Darryl F. Zanuck Award, their version of Best Picture. The PGA top prize is a reliable indicator of future Oscar success, since eight of the last ten winners here have gone on to take the Academy Award as well. Are we in line to see that happen again? Considering that the Producers Guild opted to reward Sam Mendes’ 1917, and the fact that that film is currently surging, we very well might be seeing just that. Read on for more, as well as the rest of the winners… PGA not only went for 1917 in their top category, but they rebuffed the Academy with their Documentary prize, going with Apollo 11, despite it not being nominated in Best Documentary Feature. In the Animated field, they picked Toy Story 4, arguably keeping it the slight Oscar favorite in Best Animated Feature.

Updated with full list of winners: The Producers Guild unveiled the year’s best in film and TV producing Saturday at the 31st annual PGA Awards at the Hollywood Palladium, with Universal’s 1917 taking the top film prize. It keeps the momentum going strong for Sam Mendes’ World War I epic, which is produced and financed by Amblin Partners and New Republic, after it picked up the Golden Globe for Best Picture – Drama earlier this month.
The PGA via its marquee category has picked the Best Picture Oscar 21 times in its 30-year history, including Green Book, another Universal pic, last year, and Fox Searchlight’s The Shape of Water in 2018.

“1917” has won the Producers Guild of America’s award as the best-produced feature film of 2019, giving it an important victory at an awards show that usually honors the film that goes on to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The film, an immersive drama about World War I that was fashioned to look like a single shot, triumphed in a field that also included top Academy Award contenders “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” “Parasite” and “Joker.” While the PGA win makes it a de facto frontrunner of sorts in that race, this is a year in which the Oscar race still feels unsettled.
“Apollo 11” won the award for documentary feature, while “Toy Story 4” won for animated feature.

This is one of the most reliable predictors for the Academy Award category of Best Picture, so pay attention! The ten movies cited in their top category (known as the Darryl F. Read on for more… You can see all of the Producers Guild citations below, but the ten films honored in the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures category are 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Knives Out, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. Over the weekend, the guilds really chimed in with their awards, potentially shaping the Oscar race in a big way. We saw the Ace Eddie, the Producers Guild of America, and the Screen Actors Guild hold their ceremonies, each of which impacted things, to one degree or another. As always, Ace, PGA, and SAG have some of the most direct crossover with Academy members, so what they think does hold water. Are any one of them the be all, end all? No, but they cumulatively represent a lot of what potential Oscar voters are thinking at the moment. So, you must give them credence. The big winner of the weekend was La La Land, though Hidden Figures has now created some interesting new dynamics to the race. That film took advantage of La La Land not being in SAG’s Best Ensemble lineup, beating out Moonlight for the prize. La La Land...

Eyes are always on the Producers Guild Awards, because their choice of top motion picture, the David O. Three are two topics sure to dominate the movie conversation in December 2015: "Star Wars" and awards. The latest volley comes from the Producers Guild of America, which has unveiled the nominees for the best Television Series of the year. Read More: The 20 Best Breakthrough Directors Of The Year For drama, it's essentially a highlight reel of the most popular prestige programs at the moment. My only question would be why widely admired "Fargo" didn't make the grade. For comedy, again there are no surprises, but no left-of-field choices either —the choices are all pretty mainstream fare, though it's nice to see "Inside Amy Schumer" get recognized. Meanwhile, HBO's much talked about "The Jinx: The Life And Deaths Of Robert Durst" gets a nod in the non-fiction realm. The PGA awards will be handed out on January 23, 2016. The Man from Uncle review: A fizzy antidote to 007
Suave spy caper The Man From Uncle opens this week, revamping the cult '60s TV series and bringing it to the big screen for the first time in nearly 50 years. If you've never seen the original show or its eight movie spin-offs, here's your handy guide to get you up to speed...

The original idea to make a television series about a suave, sophisticated spy who travelled the world fighting villainy came from producer Norman Felton. He was interested in presenting each episode from the point of view of an innocent person - say, a housewife or a farmer - who find themselves drawn into an adventure beyond their wildest dreams.

Light on its feet, utterly inconsequential, and quite often a pleasure to look at and listen to, "The Man From Uncle" is Guy Ritchie's big-screen reboot of the classic '60s spy show. Showcasing the charms of Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, and Alicia Vikander, it is a piffle, a fetish piece for anyone who loves the pop side of the '60s, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is not a non-stop action movie, though, and I suspect that on the heels of "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," it's going to be treated more roughly than it deserves. Ritchie has been working with writer/producer Lionel Wigram since "Sherlock Holmes," and they seem to have settled into a pretty happy system of doing things. They share screenplay credit on this one, with the story attributed to Jeff Kleeman & David C. Wilson as well as Wigram and Ritchie, and it's a pretty simple,...

Birdman secured the top prize at the 2015 Producers Guild Awards last night (January 24).
The Michael Keaton film triumphed over the likes of Boyhood and The Imitation Game to take home the Darryl F Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu accepted the award, saying: "On behalf of all of us, our only ambition was to make a risky and experimental exploration of the cinematic language, of an artist's complexity played by the incredible Michael Keaton.
"I feel humbled by this. All the films that are nominated have such an individual voice, the expression behind them - only the people who made them could have made them."
The Lego Movie picked up the animated feature award, beating Golden Globe winner How to Train Your Dragon 2.
AMC's Breaking Bad received the Norman Felton Award, given to the top drama series. It beat shows including Game of Thrones and True Detective.

It seems the Producers Guild and I have something in common as the 2015 Producers Guild Awards were announced this evening and it was Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman taking the the Darryl F. Additionally, the Jerry Seinfeld-created web series, "Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee" won the Producers Guild Award for Outstanding Digital Series while "Breaking Bad" won the Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama. This definitely keeps the race for Oscar's Best Picture open as Birdman was up against fellow Best Picture nominees American Sniper, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, Whiplash and perceived front-runner Boyhood. Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) have announced their film and television nominations for the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards, with winners set to be announced on January 24 and they couldn't have come at a better time... for me at least. I have been spending the last couple of days working on my 2015 Oscar predictions, finally adding predictions for the categories I had not yet set live and putting final touches on those I've had live since March of last year. The Oscar nomination ballots close this coming Thursday, January 8 and you better believe I'm looking at this list to get a better idea of what the industry is thinking. Overall, there aren't any real surprises, though one film continues to make a strong big for a nomination, that being Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler, which has continued to perform well in the precursor nominations. We also see a nomination for...

Paired with its documentary feature nominations, the PGA announced this Monday morning which television shows, specials, and digital series that will compete in the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards. The PGA Awards nominations honor a little bit of everything, including "Breaking Bad," "Cosmos," "Last Week with John Oliver," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and the third season of YouTube’s "Video Game High School." Can’t blame the guild for shallow picks. The PGA Awards major TV category, Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, went to the award-devouring programs we know and love. "Game of Thrones," "Breaking Bad," "House of Cards," "True Detective," and "Downton Abbey," will all compete for top honors. On the comedy side, the PGA honored the entire spectrum of laughs: The genre-bending "Louie" and "Orange Is the New Black" facing off against sitcom staples "Modern Family" and "The Big Bang Theory," with "Veep" making fun of them all...

Hard as it is to believe, but The Man From U.N.C.L.E. premiered 50 years ago today. Impressively, it remains alive and well in the minds of all the Baby Boomer fans who grew up with the series- and a new generation will be introduced to U.N.C.L.E. through the forthcoming feature film. We must recognize the genius of producer Norman Felton who, with Sam Rolfe, developed the concept (along with some brief suggestions from Ian Fleming.) We extend our congratulations to our old friends Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, who have both been major supporters of Cinema Retro since it debuted ten years ago. Happily, both guys are doing great career-wise and never seem to stop working. We also recognize all those actors, directors, writers and crew members whose talents made the show so iconic. A special, heartfelt nod to the legendary Leo G. Carroll, whose contribution to the series is inestimable.

Guy Ritchie’s take on NBC’s espionage series is arriving early next year, with a theatrical debut January 16, 2015, over Martin Luther King weekend. Starring Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill, this will be the first return of the property to mainstream audiences in over thirty years. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ran from 1964 to 1968, and starred secret agents Illya Kuryakin (David McCallum) and, no joke, a guy named Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn), as a two-man team defending the free world from the nefarious organization, Thrush.
