Showtime has canceled its stand up comedy series, I'm Dying Up Here, after two seasons.
Guess it really was dying up there.
Showtime has canceled its Jim Carrey-produced stand up comedy series, I'm Dying Up Here, after two seasons on the pay cable network, Deadline reports.
I'm Dying Up Herewas created by David Flebotte and produced by Carrey. It was based on a book of the same name from William Knoedelseder and sought to tell the under-told story of the birth of the stand-up comedy scene in 1970s Los Angeles. The show followed a group of young comedians headlined by young comedic actors Clark Duke and Michael Angarano as they work the comedy club circuit with hopes of getting their big break on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show.
Notably, Oscar-winning actress Melissa Leo portrayed comedy club owner Goldie Herschlag, a character loosely based on real life comedy club titan Mitzi Shore.

When Jim Carrey isn’t painting political portraits, he’s executive producing one of the best shows about stand-up comedy on TV. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, “I’m Dying Up Here” follows a group of aspiring stand-up comedians and the comedy club where they work out their sets. Created by Carrey and David Flebotte, “I’m Dying Up Here” is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by William Knoedelseder. Gritty and ambitious, the series explores the toughest job in show business with style and wit.
Per Showtime’s official synopsis: “‘I’m Dying Up Here’ delves into the inspired, damaged and complicated psyches of a fictional group of competitive but close-knit comedians mentored by Goldie (Leo), a brassy comedy club owner who rules over her business with an iron fist but nurtures her comedians with tough love. The series takes viewers behind the curtain of the...

Last Week’S Podcast: ‘The Amazing Race’ Host Phil Keoghan on Job Hazards: Too Much Sun and Sensory Overload — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
If there’s a line in comedy, both Kathy Griffin and Bill Maher crossed it this month. Both comedians have made a career out of being politically incorrect –but given the reaction to their antics, Griffin’s photo shoot of a bloodied pumpkin head made to look like Donald Trump, and Maher’s casual use of the “n” word on his “Real Time” series, both took it a step too far.
But where’s the bar in comedy, when being offensive is often part of what it means to be a comedian? Back in January, long before the Griffin/Maher uproar, IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast spoke with Jim Carrey about how comedy has changed as standups have become more scrutinized by their every word.

The dark side of stand-up comedy is always lurking behind the jokes, and “I’m Dying Up Here,” Showtime’s drama series set in Los Angeles’ ’70s comedy scene, aims to bring it to light. Tracking a group of comedians working a club on the Sunset Strip, the first episode slowly teases a tragedy meant to bring everyone together – even if the premiere feels unwieldy prior to the introduction of every member of this large ensemble.
An hour-long drama about the lives of comedians feels a tad antithetical even before you start counting expendable plot lines, but “I’m Dying Up Here” only exacerbates the fixable issues seen in the pilot.
What works best among the many ingredients at play is first how producer Jim Carrey and showrunner David Flebotte highlight the serious side of a world made to look lighthearted. Second, and more simply, is Ari Graynor as Cassie,...

Drop in the Bucket: Cox’s Uneven Directorial Debut
Actress Courtney Cox makes her directorial debut with Just Before I Go, based on the first feature screenplay from television alum David Flebotte. Attempting to navigate a trajectory of meaningful emotional pathos through a gutter of adult humor many write off as mere vulgarity, Cox’s film ultimately feels like the R rated version of some made-for-tv film as it attempts to extend the horizon of outsider ennui to all origins of suicidal tendency. The film isn’t without a laugh or two, but a severe tonal swerve from black comedy to sentimental PSA seems more silly than sincere, and the narrative just simply isn’t strong enough to correctly reconcile the supposed melancholy of its likeable protagonist with such a pedestrian resolution.
After his wife Penny (Elisha Cuthbert) leaves him, pet store worker Ted (Sean William Scott) decides that he wants to kill himself.

It seems this is the year creative time skips became an unexpected fashion in television. Both True Detective and Fargo pulled off the unprecedented move of jumping forward in time in the middle of an episode, and now Masters of Sex has one-upped them both by performing several jumps in the same episode! My knowledge of TV history is far from comprehensive, but I can’t think of any other show that’s done something like this before (except for a few episodes of The Simpsons, in which time is a… malleable concept, to say the least). Of course, multiple series have ended on greatest hits montages in their final episodes (Six Feet Under, for instance), but to my knowledge, no one has plopped an episode...

A review of tonight's "Masters of Sex" coming up just as soon as we pass Stalin's gift shop... "It's hard to tell where you stop and I begin." -Ginny Last week, I wondered if starting the story of season 2 so soon after the events of season 1 was a mistake, given how much ground the show had to cover in Masters and Johnson's career and how little of consequence happened in the immediate aftermath of him being fired. I wonder if an episode like "Asterion" — which over the course of an hour pushes the narrative ahead by three years — was planned from the beginning, which made the season's first half a really long prologue to the next phase of the series, or if Michelle Ashford realized at some point that there wasn't enough material in the late '50s and abruptly shut down various subplots in order to set up this big time jump.

With one directing / starring job so far under his belt with spelling bee comedy Bad Words, Jason Bateman is already hard at work on a second. He’s now eyeing a potential third, making a deal to develop, direct and star in an untitled comedy project that apparently blends a wedding and the FBI.Universal is trying to get this one made, having been through several drafts of the script through a years-long gestation that originated with Warner Bros. Back in 2011, Universal attempted to score Steve Carell as a potential star, with Phil Alden Robinson on script duty. Since then, David Flebotte has taken a crack and the current draft bears the keyboard marks of David Bar Katz. It’s that version of the script that Bateman will develop, and hopefully announce a plotline for, as the story – sometimes described as blending My Best Friend's Wedding with Stakeout – remains shrouded in mystery.

Deadline is reporting that Jason Bateman has inked a deal to star in and direct an Untitled FBI Wedding Comedy for Universal. The film will mark the actor’s third time behind the camera, after this year’s Bad Words and the upcoming The Family Fang. Plot details for the project are more or less non-existent, but we do know that David Flebotte and Phil Alden Robinson wrote the script, and David Bar Katz is now doing re-writes.
The words “FBI Wedding Comedy” don’t give us much to go on, but I think it’s safe to say that this is one to keep your eye on. Bateman is one of the most reliable and consistent comedic actors working in Hollywood, and while it’s true that he often plays the same role, he’s pretty damn good at what he does. I’ve loved him ever since his...

Oh Courteney!
Courteney Cox looms large in my personal history as a central figure in two long running franchises (Friends and Scream) that played a major role in my teenage (and further) life. So it takes a lot for me to dislike something Courteney Cox does so violently as I did her directorial debut Just Before I Go. I went in to her new film intrigued and with some mild expectations that she’d be able to transfer the strange, often very dark humor of her current TBS sitcom Cougar Town into something somewhat funny. This new film’s elements of suicide, homophobia, racism, and other eye-raising topics certainly lend themselves to a wicked, taboo-pushing comedy, but what she and screenwriter David Flebotte have delivered instead is one of the most offensive pieces of trash to have come out in quite some time. Before seeing her feature directorial debut Just Before I Go, I never could have imagined just how enraged I could be at Courteney Cox. But this dark comedy is insulting and offensive in just about every way possible. It doesn't understand the line between irreverent humor and offensive jokes. Actually, it doesn't seem to know there is one. As I suffered through the piling on of the tasteless "jokes" and infuriating dialogue that makes up the worst The Tribeca Film Festival had to offer, I resented the 95 minutes of my life I was giving to this garbage, and Cox for thinking it was worth showing the world at all. Written by Desperate Housewives scribe David Flebotte, Just Before I Go stars Seann William Scott as a suicidal man who returns to his hometown to tie up loose ends before offing himself. His bucket list includes screeching at his abusive old...

Even a highly seasoned director would be at a loss to navigate the wild tonal shifts of David Flebotte’s screenplay for Just Before I Go, so it’s not surprising that debuting helmer Courteney Cox isn’t able to make them palatable. While the sitcom veteran displays an easy facility with actors in this tale of a depressed man returning to his hometown to clear a few things from his bucket list before he kills himself, the film receiving its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival is a serious misfire. The central character, Ted Morgan (Seann William Scott), is appropriately first

New York (AP) — Courteney Cox's directorial debut is uniquely personal. It features a cameo from her daughter, Coco, songs by her boyfriend, Snow Patrol's Johnny McDaid, and a scene with her ex-husband, David Arquette. The film opens with 9-year-old Coco singing a song of McDaid's. Later, she briefly appears to spray her father, Arquette, with a hose. As a proud mother, it's Cox's favorite scene. "I couldn't have cut that out," said Cox, who acknowledges their family dynamics are unusually friendly. "If I needed four seconds, that would be the last four seconds to go." Cox will premiere the film, "Just Before I Go," on Thursday at the Tribeca Film Festival. It's the first stab at feature-film directing for the 49-year-old TV star, who readied herself for the opportunity by directing a short, a Lifetime movie and 10 episodes of her TBS sitcom "Cougar Town." HBO is moving forward with a pilot order of the half-hour comedy from Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin - although in what Deadline calls a redeveloped/retooled script, although no word on what exactly that includes. The currently untitled project will star both gentlemen as two young reporters, trying to make it big in Atlanta. The potentially new HBO series will be executive produced by Lorne Michaels, along with Riddle and Salahuddin, with Dave Flebotte serving as showrunner. I'm glad that HBO will be its home. I hope it means that they'll be free to push the envelope a bit, and give us something wholly original. Let's hope that the so-called "retooled" script...

Boardwalk Empire, Season 4, Episode 10, “White Horse Pike”
Written by Dave Flebotte

Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO
Kate is new to Boardwalk Empire this season and her reviews will approach the acclaimed series from the newbie’s perspective.
This week, on Boardwalk Empire: Margaret makes a deal, Sally makes a call, and Narcisse makes his move
This season of Boardwalk Empire has struggled somewhat, due to its rather distracted focus on too many characters. Finally, in episode 10, one of the long-simmering arcs, the conflict between Chalky and Narcisse, comes to a boil, erupting in action and forcing Nucky and several ancillary characters to show where their loyalties lie. It’s frustrating that this is only happening now, but even so, the dramatic confrontation between Nucky and Narcisse is incredibly satisfying and the results of Narcisse’s quiet negotiations are effective. Did we need to...
