Jessica Barden has set her latest project in the shape of the sports drama An Unsuitable Game from the BAFTA-award-winning filmmaker Mandie Fletcher (Absolutely Fabulous), which will launch sales next month at TIFF.
Barden stars alongside Jessica Brown Findlay and Sian Clifford (Fleabag) in the flick, which is inspired by the true story of a group of female friends who form an amateur football team at the height of the first world war. Despite incredible opposition from the establishment, their male co-workers, and the press – they start to draw crowds and growing popularity. The film is described as a timely, uplifting story of women being disruptive, funny, and inspiring.

For decades, Italy’s box office has suffered the summertime blues due to a scarcity of blockbusters from the Hollywood studios, which noted that Italian audiences were more interested in going to the beach than a movie theater. However, that is changing.
The Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, which runs June 13-16 and is Italy’s single start of summer event, is perfectly positioned to become a prime driver for this crucial seasonal push.
“I’ve been saying for years that summer festivals should promote summer releases,” says Tiziana Rocca, who launched the fest on the island of Sardinia in Italy last year.
Italy’s push for summer releases is the result of a joint effort between the studios and all sectors of Italy’s film industry, largely prompted by the government that recently got all sides to sit at the table and agree to remove this anomaly that was causing...

Dog movies almost always want to make you cry. The ones that just want to make you smile are few and far between. That’s usually the case with pet centric flicks, which is good for emotion, but sometimes rough for animal lovers like yours truly. It’s nice on occasion to not go into a film with a canine companion and have to fret about an impending death. Luckily, one look at Patrick, the new dog centric comedy, and your heart will melt without ever reducing you to tears. It’s far from perfect, but it’s more than cute enough to be worthy of a recommendation. The movie is a comedy about how a dog ends up leading a young woman to happiness. At the beginning, Sarah Francis (Beattie Edmondson) has a life that could charitably be called an absolute mess. After the death of her grandmother, for...

There’s no denying that “Patrick” is absolutely adorable. When a story revolves around a four-legged furry friend — a squishy, huggable pug, at that — that much is to be expected. However, what makes director Mandie Fletcher’s canine-centered romantic comedy work is its ability to engage in between the oh-so-cute closeups of the bug-eyed pup. Though the narrative tends to be a touch too simplistic for most grown-ups, and lacks enough riotous dog action for the little ones, there’s enough bite to make things worthwhile for those who just want to enjoy a sweet, wholesome dog movie.
Sarah’s (Beattie Edmondson) life is in shambles. Her boyfriend has just left her stranded in a new apartment without knowing a soul in the neighborhood. Her entire family thinks she’s turning into a spinster since all her romantic relationships end in woe. She’s depressed and questioning what love has in store for her.

"What was granny thinking? I don't like dogs!" Screen Media has released an official Us trailer for an indie comedy titled Patrick, about a spoiled pug named Patrick who gets bequeathed to a young woman who is having some romantic troubles in her British life. As expected, the goofball pup provides some good laughs and plenty of pain, but he also helps her get back on track - with falling in love. This already opened in the UK last year, and we featured the UK trailer previously. Beattie Edmondson stars as Sarah, and the cast includes Ed Skrein, Emilia Jones, Jennifer Saunders, Meera Syal, Gemma Jones, Emily Atack, and Peter Davison. This looks super cute and kitschy, and perhaps just the perfect amount of campiness. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ poster) for Mandie Fletcher's Patrick, in high def on Apple: You can still watch the original UK...

‘Boy Erased.’
Given the challenging subject, Joel Edgerton’s gay conversion therapy drama Boy Erased opened very respectably in Australia last weekend, its first international market after platforming in the Us.
In part that speaks to the star power of Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as well as Lucas Hedges’ impressive turn as the teenage protagonist and Edgerton’s direction, screenplay and supporting role.
Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Warner Bros’ A Star is Born continued to dominate ticket sales as Sony’s sequel to the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo flopped.
Hindi action-adventure Thugs of Hindostan drew plenty of Bollywood fans while They Shall Not Grow Old, Peter Jackson’s artful mix of restored WW1 footage owned by the Imperial War Museum and BBC audio generated an impressive $178,000 from limited sessions on Sunday.

To celebrate the release of Disney’s new film Patrick, we had the pleasure of meeting the leading star himself, the pug Harley. Naturally, he didn’t say an awful lot, but thankfully he was sat next to the film’s real lead, Beattie Edmondson. We spoke about everything pug with the actress as well as the film’s director Mandie Fletcher.
Edmondson – who is the daughter of British comedy legends Jennifer Saunders and Ade Edmondson – discusses her initial connection with Harley, and what it was like collaborating with a pug. She also told us whether the pair have stayed in touch, and what it is that makes dogs such special companions.
Fletcher also spoke about the challenges of directing a pug, and what a joy it was to have Edmondson on board, and why she felt compelled to convince Disney to take a chance on this talented newcomer. The director,...

Title: Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Director: Mandie Fletcher Starring: Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, June Whitfield, Jane Horrocks, Claudia Bing, Gwendoline Christie and Chris Colfer The witticism of ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’ is not up to the standards of British humour. Director Mandie Fletcher opts for a coarse slapstick entertainment, as she condenses in a film the U.K. television show ‘Absolutely Fabulous.’ The comedy’s screenplay was written by Jennifer Saunders, based on her eponymous sitcom, where she plays the character of Edina Monsoon, the owner of a barely successful metropolitan PR company. Her best friend and partner in crime Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) relishes in the high life. Eddy [ Read More ]

Chicago – As far as TV shows that fans wish could be movies, the cult hit “Absolutely Fabulous” was high on the list. The adventures of Patsy and Edina, two middle age Brits with an appetite for self medication, has had a dedicated following since it premiered in 1992. Even though there were six full TV seasons, and various reunions, “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” has emerged.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Although series creator (and portrayer of Edina) Jennifer Saunders wrote the screenplay, the film suffered with a not-quite-enough storyline that made 90 minutes seem longer. However, there are some magic and bizarrely funny moments in the film, even though the substance-abusing duo are getting a bit long in the tooth to keep the characters viable. But this is “Ab-Fab,” and viability is not really high on the radar, darling. For fans of the show, this is welcome fun, and for those not as familiar, caveat emptor.

Topped by Star Trek Beyond, five films grossed over $20 million this weekend for the first time since May 24, 2015 and for only the sixth time ever*. In the five previous instances $45.6 million was the largest gross for the #1 film when Monsters University topped the weekend back on June 30, 2013, which separates this weekend from the rest thanks to the estimated $59.6 million Beyond delivered in its debut performance. Also opening this weekend, and topping the $20 million threshold, was the impressive performance from New Line and Warner's Lights Out along with the rather disappointing opening for Ice Age: Collision Course. Overall, the top twelve grossed over $183 million, up 29.4% when compared to the same weekend last year. The estimated $59.6 million opening for Star Trek Beyond is enough to take #1 for the weekend, but that's a 15% drop compared to the $70.1 million opening for Star Trek Into Darkness, and that's not including the $13.5 million it carried into...

Ever since Absolutely Fabulous swanned onto the BBC in 1992, there's been talk of a feature-film adventure — and now, 24 years later, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie has left Brexit-land to splash down on our shores. Moviegoers are now in the enviable position of spending decadent quality time with P.R. guru Edina "Eddy" Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and her fashionista and champagne-and-coke savant bestie Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley). Diehard fans will find Eddy and Patsy even more AbFab on the big screen. The movie? Not so much. Too many locations, a convoluted plot,...

Eddy and Patsy are still a blast, but too many tired jokes and celebrity cameos pad out a painfully-stretched film
Nearly 25 years since Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) first staggered on to our televisions, they finally make their big-screen debut. And like many TV spin-offs (most recently the Entourage film), material which worked in a 30-minute episode feels as painfully stretched as a botched facelift at feature-film length. Still, the booze-storming performances from Saunders and Lumley provide a welcome, if slightly sozzled, levity. The timing is fortuitous too – the film provides a champagne bubble of counter-programming for both the football-averse and the news-weary.
Directed by Mandie Fletcher, responsible for several Ab Fab television episodes, and written by Saunders, the film, like its subjects, is chaotic, frequently lazy and unhealthily obsessed with celebrity. Famous faces too numerous to list pop up instead of punchlines – this is comedy which leans...

There's a reason sit-com movie spin-offs have a bad reputation. Trying to recreate humour that worked on the small screen for cinema audiences is extremely difficult and, coupled with the fact that Absolutely Fabulous is getting on a bit now, the mere idea of this was a gamble.
The Inbetweeners movies are often cited as examples of this working, but their in-built audience was a lot closer to the original than Ab Fab's is. This is not for newcomers or the mildly curious, then, but it is a veritable treat for children and adults of the 90s, existing fans and anyone who quite likes Saunders' brand of comedy.
It sets up the premise pretty quickly, with an ageing Edina (Jennifer Saunders) informed by Mark Gatiss' book editor that her life hasn't been nearly as interesting as she'd like to think.

Plans are in place for Absolutely Fabulous 2 - assuming the first film hits big...
The first film arrives in cinemas in the UK this weekend (starring Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders, of course), but already, there are plans for another big screen outing for Absolutely Fabulous.
The fate of Absolutely Fabulous 2 inevitably hinges on whether enough people support the first film, but at the premiere of the new movie in London last night, Jennifer Saunders revealed to – yuck – The Sun that “we’re doing it again, certainly. I want this again. If people go and watch it, yes”.
Saunders has no shortage of ideas for another Absolutely Fabulous movie, and now it’s a case of wait and see. Mandie Fletcher has helmed the first film, incidentally, from Saunders’ screenplay.

From Cecil Beaton and Edith Head to Sandy Powell and Colleen Atwood, the work of costume designers is crucial to the look of the characters of any movie.
The Academy Award for Best Costume Design is given out annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for the best achievement of film costume design of the previous year. Films that are eligible for the award must meet a series of criteria, including the requirement that the costumes must have been “conceived” by a costume designer.
None is more important than the costumes and fashion in the upcoming Absolutely Fabulous, provided by artists Rebecca Hale, Giles Deacon and Charlotte Sewell.
Appropriate for their big screen debut, Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hotspots.

Cult British comedy Absolutely Fabulous is getting a big screen adaptation. The film will reunite series stars Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, who first played the parts in a 1990 sketch on the show French & Saunders. The sketch was such a hit that it led to a full-on sitcom based on their characters, Edina and Patsy. Absolutely Fabulous ran from 1992 to 1996, and had a few special reunion episodes in 2011 and 2012. It looks like those reunion specials garnered enough interest to bring us a full-fledged major motion picture.

Edina and Patsy have announced their return in typically stylish fashion today, with Fox Searchlight unveiling the first official image for Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie that reunites Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley following their days on the hit BBC comedy.
Long rumored but never actually conceived until now, Mandie Fletcher will return to helm the big-screen adaptation after directing several episodes of the original TV series.
