Critics love Martin McDonagh’s new film “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which reunites Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, his two leads from 2008’s black crime comedy “In Bruges” as feuding former friends.
The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where Farrell won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and McDonagh won for Best Screenplay. Five years ago, McDonagh won the same award for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” which set the stage for an Oscar in the same category. “Billboards” stars Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell also won Oscars.
So could this be the film that might finally get Farrell his first Academy Award nomination? The actor, who netted a Golden Globe for “In Bruges,” is overdue for some Oscar love, as is Gleeson, an Emmy winner for 2009’s “Into the Storm.”

The Banshees of Inisherin is an excellent film written and directed by Martin McDonagh. It is starred by Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon.
You need to be blind to not notice it: this is an absolutely special movie. It is noteworthy from the very first frame in everything.
Storyline
Pádraic gets up in the morning like he does every day to visit his friend Colm. But this day there is a problem and it is that Colm, for no real reason, no longer wants to be Pádraic´s friend.
Movie Review The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
A film in the flavor of John Ford, quality filming in each frame, composition, very studied photography, elaborated narrative and devoted acting that is outstanding in the two leading roles.
But the film has a character that does not appear: Martin McDonagh, who is outstanding as he was in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing...

On Inisherin a young woman wrestles with her conscience as she tries to decide between starting her own life on the mainland or remaining in service to her beloved brother in the home they share. On Inisherin, a young man struggles to escape the abusive hand of his own father, shunned as he is by the rest of the small community. On Inisherin, the distant thunder of civil war on the mainland plays frequently in the background, constantly threatening to inch ever closer to the island’s residents. And yet…
And yet, on Inisherin, as a half-dozen more dramatic stories are playing, the banshees are instead wailing a song about two friends, Pádraic Súilleabháin and Colm Doherty, who’ve had a mysterious falling out. For Colm, the reasons are clear — he wants to create music and put something new and original into the world, and he doesn’t want to...

Brendan Gleeson hosted Saturday Night Live and was saved by his The Banshees of Inisherin co-star after a rough start to a lackluster monologue. Colin Farrell crashed Gleeson’s monologue after he said he was “weird and wonderful,” providing a lighter and funny mood to the opening segment.
Gleeson was talking about the premise of his new film that revolves around “two fellas who fall out because one of them is a little too needy.”
“I mean, I love Colin to bits, but the story’s not too far from the truth,” he added.
Farrell walked in claiming he was “just passing” as he “was on the way from the mustache shop.” He then took the opportunity to ask Gleeson to ask him a question.
“Is it going to be a needy question?” Gleeson quipped.
“So, who’s your most favorite co-star you’ve ever worked with?” Farrell asked.
“Paddington Bear,...

Every afternoon — for as long as anyone on the tiny, fictional Irish isle of Inisherin can remember — two friends have sat together at the only pub in a town for a few pints of Guinness. This shared ritual might be the only thing these men have in common.
Pádraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farrell), the younger of the two, is a sweet and simple type who doesn’t ask for much from life, and gives it exactly that in return. If he died five yards from where he was born, that would suit him just fine. Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson) is cut from a more intense cloth. An amateur but obsessive fiddler who’s in his 60s and convinced that he has exactly 12 years left to live, Colm is prone to a certain resentment over the smallness of his existence.

Ireland’s rural West was the setting for a cluster of plays hatched out of a remarkably prolific early period in the mid-‘90s that thrust Martin McDonagh onto the map. But aside from the title initially intended to complete his Aran Islands trilogy, The Banshees of Inisherin remained for decades at a larval stage, unproduced and unpublished. The playwright considered it an immature work, floating the possibility of returning to it later in life. Preserving the title but spinning an entirely new yarn to flesh out its suggestion of folk balladry, the writer-director’s superbly acted fourth feature is his most Irish work for the screen to date, and also one of his best.
A dark comedy that evolves steadily into an unexpectedly poignant account of friendship severed — with violent force when distance doesn’t have the desired effect — though never erased,...
