It was recently announced that Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role of Ash in Sam Raimi’s upcoming Ash Vs. Evil Dead series. The actor is now set to star in a new comedy film called Highly Functional.
In it, Campbell plays a “washed-up former country rock star who’s kidnapped by a young autistic man portrayed by James Frecheville (Animal Kingdom), with the belief that his dying caregiver can only be cured by the star performing.” The rest of the cast includes Annabeth Gish (Sons of Anarchy) and Missi Pyle (Gone Girl).
The movie will be directed by Marc Forby from a script written by Tom Dibble. It’s great to see Campbell land a new movie role. In my opinion, the guy is completely underrated and is not used enough in movies. The world could always use more Bruce Campbell.

• Robert De Niro is in talks for Joy. If the deal closes, De Niro would re-team him with actress Jennifer Lawrence and director David O. De Niro is considering the role of Mangano's father, but his decision reportedly depends on whether Lawrence's deal closes. Russell is rewriting the script, which tracks Mangano's path from single mother in Long Island to QVC star, originally by Bridesmaids scribe Annie Mumolo. The film is...

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Music Box Films) Follow up to the hit The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo finds Lisabeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) and Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) joining forces once again as Blomkvist is about to break a story on Sweden’s sex trade, which leads unexpectedly to a dark secret from Elizabeth’s past. Starts off well, then quickly nose-dives into sensationalism and downright silliness, with a pair of villains who are straight out of a Roger Moore-era James Bond film. A real letdown for those of us who felt Dragon Tattoo had finally breathed life into the cinema’s long-stagnant genre of the thriller. Bonuses: English language track; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

MacGruber (*1/2 out of 4)
If Pixar and its animated output is Hollywood’s safest bet, then full-length features derived from brief “Saturday Night Live” skits have to be the industry’s riskiest gamble. It’s possible you’ll end up with a “Blues Brothers” or a “Wayne’s World,” comedies that extend their single-joke premise and expand the universe for their potentially amusing characters. But more often than not, you’re destined for an unimaginative dud like “The Ladies Man,” “It’s Pat,” “A Night at the Roxbury,” “Superstar” and, now, “MacGruber.” Why do studios continue to green light such projects? Russian roulette players have better survival rates.
The running gag in a “MacGruber” sketch is that the incompetent hero, played by Will Forte as a poor-man’s version of Richard Dean Anderson’s television adventurer MacGuyver, usually explodes right before he does something lewd or ridiculous.

A major problem with trying to make a romantic drama out of the history of Hawaii’s Princess Ka’iulani is that she died young, with relatively little chance for romance or drama. And while Princess Kaiulani makes do with what story it has, the film feels stretched and straining, full of sleepy scenes and pregnant pauses. It’s as though first-time writer-director Marc Forby is hoping that if he waits long enough, spontaneous action or bodice-ripping passion might suddenly break out, to cut through the staid tone. The New World’s Q’orianka Kilcher stars as Victoria Ka’iulani ...

Sometimes the screen really is a reflection of real life. This time, the reflection was of Q'orianka Kilcher who plays the Hawaiian Princess Kaiulani in Marc Forby's new film "Princess Kaiulani." It is the story of a young woman who takes a stand to protect the rights of the Hawaiian indigenous people in the late 19th century. In addition to being an incredible actress, Q'orianka is a passionate activist who is an active spokesperson for Peruvian land rights, so the role of the Princess was a perfect fit! On Monday night, her non-profit organization, Q-On-q, hosted an evening of cultural celebration, activism and urgency at the Historic Crest Theater in Los Angeles. The nonprofit organization mission's is to give a voice to the voiceless, especially indigenous peoples, youth advocates and the environment. Nearly six years ago, at the age of 14,...

By Susan Granger - This potentially fascinating tale of how the Hawaiian Islands lost their independence and were annexed to the United States, coupled with the romantic saga of a beloved half-Hawaiian, half-Scottish princess who battled injustice, is ripe with potential. But British filmmaker Marc Forby drains the inherent drama out of the true story, rendering it a one-dimensional period piece more suitable for the History Channel.

Marc Forby directs and writes the drama as well as producing alongside Nigel Thomas, Lauri Apelian, Ric Galindez and Roy Tjioe. Set against the dramatic island backdrop of Hawaii and based on the inspiring true story, "Princess Kaiulani" is a breathtaking romance about an unlikely heroine and her unwavering fight to defend the independence of her people. In 1888, Hawaii was a paradise teetering on the brink of civil unrest. The tide had turned against the long-incumbent royal family, under the malevolent influence of a rebel party with links to the American government. Within months, the Palace was overthrown, and the royals exiled...

Business was quickly wrapped up but it was done with a healthy number of buys reported. Lower prices have become accepted but the market must have product as this event proved.

Now here's something unusual -- a remake of a classic slasher movie that actually tones down the violence of the original rather than bringing it more in line with today's torture porn standards.
But while playing to a PG-13 rating can have its virtues, Prom Night, a reworking of the 1980 original, needed to substitute the excised graphic stuff with some genuine jolts and creepy scares, along the lines of John Carpenter's first Halloween.
Alas, the awfully bland 2008 version, serving as the feature directorial debut of Nelson McCormick (CSI, Prison Break) and written by J.S. Cardone (The Covenant), offers no such thrills, proving to be about as spine-tingling as an algebra exam.
Obviously targeting a young female demographic, the benign Screen Gems release should handily scare off the young male audience that usually makes or breaks a horror film.
Where the very first Prom Night, itself a shameless Carrie knockoff, presented a mystery killer with a method to his madness -- he was avenging the death of a little girl at the hands of the group of teens he was terrorizing -- not to mention a disco-dancing Jamie Lee Curtis back in her scream queen days, the "reimagined" edition dispenses with ulterior motives.
Here we have senior student Donna Keppel ("Hairspray's" Brittany Snow), who lost her entire family three years earlier at the blood-stained hands of Richard Fenton (Johnathon Schaech) an obsessed teacher who wanted her all to himself.
Now living with her aunt and uncle, Donna is trying not to let her tragic past ruin Prom Night, but, Mr. Fenton has other ideas, having just escaped from his maximum security asylum.
After significantly toning down the usual shock/camp value, Prom Night cries out for the sort of lurking dread and prevailing off-kilter mood that are hallmarks of the more effective psychological thrillers.
There's the obligatory body count, but minus anything resembling originality or resourcefulness, sometimes it's hard to tell if the remarkably demure marks left by the resident psychopath are from fatal stabbings or smudged lip gloss.
Given that the title event has to be one of the dullest prom nights ever recorded on film, chances are good that some of Fenton's presumed victims actually died of boredom.
