Somehow, the Avengers all made it through Captain America: Civil War alive. There were no casualties among the superheroes in the latest Marvel movie. The major character deaths were Peggy Carter, the villain Crossbones, and the Wakandan King, T'Chaka. But somehow, all of the Avengers and their new superpowered buddies survived all the standoffs, bombings, and villains’ devious plans. The worst injury by far was Rhodey’s partial paralysis. Perhaps the impact of a major Marvel character dying has been weakened by the easy return of supposedly dead characters like Nick Fury, but the McU masterminds have a specific reason for keeping all the Avengers from perishing in Civil War. At a Q&A that followed a screening of the movie in Hollywood on Friday (it was a “for your consideration” event — Marvel’s gearing up for award campaign season), an audience member asked about this low death toll. Here...

The 6th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival makes its move into October this year where it will be screening on Oct. 3-6 at the St. Anthony Main Theater. The fest, while screening new films from all over, does a fantastic job of screening movies by local Minnesota filmmakers.
Some of these locally produced films include Mark Nielson’s spooky road trip flick Land of Sky Blue Water; Adam Jacobs’ suspense comedy Weekend Hat, which was also produced entirely by high school students; Dave Ash’s sci-fi drama Connected, which is co-directed by Paul von Stoetzel, whose short film Twisted Sister screens before the feature; Donny West’s autobiographical documentary Dazzle (The Donny West Story); and Phil Holbrook’s drama Tilt. There are also loads of short film programs featuring work by local filmmakers.

Fans who are eagerly anticipating Marvel's Cinematic Phase 2 (which kicks off with Iron Man 3 next month), will be happy to hear the announcement that production has officially started on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. To go along with that, Marvel has released the first official image and synopsis for the film, which gives some hints about where the film will go. Apparently, Black Widow has more of a leading role this time around...
Outside of the first Iron Man film, of all Marvel's lead-up movies, I think Captain America was one of the better ones. It wasn't perfect, fell into something of a cookie-cutter plot at times, but it was one of the more enjoyable and entertaining comic book movies. So I'm interested to see what comes next, and how they'll move the Captain into the mordern day following the events of Avengers.

Marvel has released the first official photo from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and announced that the movie has started shooting in Los Angeles! Thy've also released a little plot summary for the film that goes like this...
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will pick-up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.
I'm very excited to see that Black Widow is going to play a big role in this story, and not just have a small cameo. This sequel is going to be great. I'm looking forward to seeing how everything turns out!
The movie is set to be released on April 4th, 2014. You can check out the full press release below!

The first official image for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has arrived along with an extensive synopsis, both courtesy of Marvel. The image itself is quite striking and expertly sums up Cap's internal conflict as he fully steps into the modern world. How will he reconcile the shield behind him and the S.H.I.E.L.D. in front of him?
I have to say, this is a great teaser image for the sequel to "Captain America: The First Avenger." If there was one thing fans wanted more of from "Marvel's the Avengers," it was time-displaced Steve coping with the new world around him. This one image pretty much says, "hey, we're dealing with it now." And that's great.
Check out the full synopsis, and a rundown of its major reveals, below.

Today the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced its nominees for the 2013 Saturn Awards, one of the few awards programs in which a lot of us will recognize nearly every production. The awards have been expanded over recent years, so if you are unclear about just what type of productions are honored by the Academy, an explanation is included in the press release below, although it can really be summarized as “we know it when we see it.”
A few head-scratchers, however, just beg to be called out:
Anna Karenina? Les Miserables? Leverage? Elementary? Really? That is some broad definition. No subgenre categories for television. The Academy proofreader should know by now that it’s “Syfy” and not “SyFy” (don’t worry, I fixed it, and sorry, it’s a pet peeve). Adding in historical fiction somewhere somehow without actually mentioning it. The entire category “Best Youth-Oriented...

As we all know, The Avengers has taken the box office by storm over the past six weeks, becoming the first movie of 2012 to take a billion dollars. With the money still rolling in, Marvel – as ever keeping an eye on the future – officially announced today that principal photography has started for Iron Man 3, due out in May, 2013 – just eleven more months before Tony Stark returns to the big screen.
A few grainy set photos have been surfacing in the past week online, as well as shots of Robert Downey, Jr. arriving on set, but now a brilliant official photo has been released in tandem with the official announcement – presumably that suggests the photos so far may not have been part of principal photography.
Shane Black, Downey, Jr.’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang writer-director, is taking over from Jon Favreau behind the camera, co-writing the script with Drew Pearce...

Even though filming for Marvel's upcoming Iron Man 3 started a couple weeks ago, the studio has now released the official press statement for the start of production and have included the first official picture from the set of the film.
Leaks from the set of Iron Man 3 have already been coming in, so I found it kind of funny this morning when I got a press release from Marvel announcing the start of production. Oh well, it's got some information on the cast, and includes the first 'official' image from the set.
That's a whole lot of Iron Man suits in the background there. Obviously this is Stark's basement and looks much like it has in the previous films. While it's nothing new, for Marvel fans looking forward to Iron Man's next outing it's pretty exciting. The full release is below:

The first scene of " The Avengers" is not very good. Deep in a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. base, scientist Eric Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) is conducting experiments on The Tesseract, the blue cube that powered the Red Skull's experiments in "Captain America: The First Avenger." Experiments that, unfortunately, bring to earth Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the vengeful brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), last seen plummeting from Asgard into oblivion. Loki manages to take down S.H.I.E.L.D's best -- Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) -- with ease, and soon the base is decimated. It's a perfectly acceptable place to start, but there's something off about the execution: it's stilted, awkward and humorless, and the action is pretty uninvolving, with a TV-level of scope.
We're not quite sure what happened, because that opening scene is by some distance the worst thing in the film.

Even better is when said story involves bringing one of your favorite fictional characters to life. By assuming full creative control of how their comic properties are adapted to the silver screen, they've turned out a number of entertaining pictures where some of their most famous characters feel like they've truly been brought to life. We're all well aware that the Iron Man films, the Hulk reboot and most recently Thor are all part of a grand plan to unite several Marvel...

The third chapter of Brief Lives is, in its plot, mostly transitional: it gets the characters moving and introduces us to people who will, I expect, be important along the way, but nothing quite begins or ends here.
What we get in this chapter are glimpses and hints, suggestions of much beyond the immediate. The suggestions begin right from the first page, which reveals that not only are there more extremely long-lived people walking the streets of the world than we might have previously presumed, but Earth is not the only planet open to the Sandman’s wanderings — the first panel shows a view of space and the second sentence begins with the phrase, “Even on this planet,” which points not only to other planets, but other planets where there is a sense of time and history, for the sentence continues on to talk of ages and years. Later, when Dream visits Mr.

The Rapture of Unreason
“I grew up around Christians who believed in a seven day creation, preached the reality of Hell and Judgement, and railed against the lie that was evolution. They were also, for the most part, racists and homophobes… And the only difference between them and me was that I had a father who shoved a science fiction paperback into my pre-teen hands and ordered me to read it. After all, it’s pretty hard to be prejudiced against blacks and gays when you’re a-okay with Klingons and the Green Men of Mars.”
– Lou Anders, Bowing to the Future
So the 21st of May came and went without a whiff of the Rapture, nary a hint of Moby Douche, the Great White Fail, breaching the firmament above. No star called Wormwood fallen from the sky, turning a third of the waters to tasty absinthe. No angels treading...

Marvel's mightiest heroes are now assembling under the supervision of Joss Whedon.
It's been announced that production has started in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on team-up adventure The Avengers. It's directed by Whedon, who is also the screenwriter on this hotly-anticipated project.
Filming will then continue in Cleveland, Ohio, and New York City, says the Marvel Studios statement.
A teaser image was also unveiled as the first set picture from the movie and you can see that above. It's an amusingly tantalising hint at the gathering of heroes we will see on the big screen next summer (although I doubt the Hulk would fit in that chair or that it would withstand his weight!)
The official announcement from Marvel confirms who exactly will be joining forces, including familiar faces and new additions.

Over the weekend, Obsessed With Film was sent an email from an anonymous source claiming to have come into possession of a 08/04/2011 shooting draft script titled “Group Hug”. This is well known to be the secret production title of The Avengers, Marvel/Disney’s ensemble superhero movie that began filming on Easter Monday. The e-mail claimed the 129 page script bore the Marvel Studios letterhead and all the pages were watermarked with the name of the actor who the leaked script belongs too.
I was then asked to contact the source to ‘negotiate terms’.
Out of mild curiosity I asked for visual clarification that the script was real in the form of some photo’s (I was never going to make a serious offer, I just wanted to see which actor will get in trouble for letting his script go loose) and what returned was two images which clearly show the...

I’ve been debating over the last few hours whether or not to release this… We received some photos that are being claimed as pages straight from the script of The Avengers. While the pages mentioned don’t give too many details, it is a pretty cool look into what we can expect from next summer’s superhero flick which pulls in the Marvel comic book characters Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk and Nick Fury.
Now, I can’t confirm these photos are from the actual script, but from the “official” look these pages have, I gotta say they are legit. Anyway, hit the jump to see the leaked script pages for The Avengers.
As you can see from these photos, the film is shooting under the covert name of “Group Hug.” Check out the official press release sent out by Marvel yesterday.

Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow have finally assembled. As we already knew [1], Joss Whedon has officially begun production on Marvel and Disney's mega superhero team up The Avengers, aimed at a May 4, 2012 release. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Marvel has released a very teaserific image from the set as well as an official press release that once again confirms characters from Thor, played by Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgård, are indeed in the film [2]. It also reveals the names of the rest of Whedon's creative team. Read the press release, which also contains your first "official" plot description and check out the photo after the jump. Marvel have started what is sure to be an ongoing mixture of tease and inconsequential nonsense by posting this picture of the set of The Avengers.
It’s a nicely done picture, which simply states to fans – It is happening. There’s a nice S.H.I.E.L.D logo on the wall and the main players director Joss Whedon has to contain all have their chairs, which is good because comfort is all important when you’re saving the world.
With Kenneth Branagh’s Thor doing very well in cinemas and Captain America spitting out decent trailers what we need is a look at Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and Hulk to complete the picture but I’m sure they’ll save that for the trailer.

Here's the first Image and press releases for Marvels superhero team up 'The Avengers,' that has Joss Whedon at the helm:
Joss Whedon's statement:
Hi Pumpkins, joss here. Tomorrow we start shooting (I Think I'm legally permitted to say that). Day one. That's right. We'll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss's keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in "Stormy Monday", drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave] Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I'll be checking in from time to time, if there's news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake) . None of it will be Avengers news -- I have some very denty pillows to remind of that -- but I may have tidbits. (They're not about Firefly. I should say that up front, if only to protect Sis Mo from the Hatorz.

Hello, all! Kurt Osenlund here from Your Movie Buddy, making my inaugural contribution to The Film Experience while Nathaniel explores the (very) wet and (sorta) wild country of Iceland (having paid a visit myself in March, I can safely say he is having one unique vacay).
After scouring the countless monologues filed away in my memory, I settled on Peter Sarsgaard’s climactic outburst in Shattered Glass, the supremely watchable journalism drama from writer/director Billy Ray. Released in 2003, it's the movie that kick-started my undying affection for Sarsgaard, and I know I'm not alone in that regaard (I certainly wasn't alone while heavily sighing after Sigourney Weaver didn't announce his name on Oscar nomination morning). Sarsgaard was solid in Boys Don’t Cry, but that film certainly didn’t offer the scene-stealing showmanship he wields so effortlessly as The New Republic’s conscientious office-bad-guy, editor Chuck Lane.
