British comic actor of the 1930's and 40's, who began in cabaret and came to fame as performer of bawdy jokes and songs, some of which were banned. In 1932 alone, he sold over 100,000 records. In 1934, he formed a comedic partnership with Tommy Handley, billed as 'Murgatroyd and Winterbottom'.
