Richard Franklin, better known for his portrayal of Captain Mike Yates during Jon Pertwee’s run of Doctor Who, has died at 87.
The actor’s death Monday morning was confirmed by Liam Rudden, a friend of Franklin’s who ran his social media. Rudden shared in a family statement that the late actor had “died in his sleep after fighting long term illness.”
“We are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic story telling,” the statement continues. “He is also well remembered outside the family for his long running career in TV and Theatre where he delighted audiences of all ages. This gave him great joy and we know his legacy will last.”
Rudden continued to share tributes on Franklin’s X page, sharing that Franklin would “have loved that he is trending” and writing, “One thing I loved about...

The Initiative arguably marks a new phase of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Oz has left the building, casting off yet another of the early years remnants. Only Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles remain – although James Marsters finally graduates to full-time member and reluctant hanger-on of the Scooby Gang. It's also the story where squeaky-clean curtain head Riley starts to fit into the puzzle. Which can only mean that the series reveals what all these mysterious Commandos are all about.
With the dawning of a new era, both in this season and of the whole show, it's mysterious that The Initiative episode is a bit flat. I guess that any episode which revolves around a bunch of dull army goons wouldn't ever score highly on my list of quintessential ways to spend 45 minutes with the telly. Army and sci-fi rarely go together well, resulting in lots of tedious gun battles and laughable machismo.

Captain Mike Yates
Portrayed by: Richard Franklin
Doctor: Third Doctor
Story: 9 stories, from Terror of the Autons (Jan, 1971) to Planet of the Spiders (June, 1974)
Background: Capt. Yates is an officer in Unit, working under the Brigadier and alongside Sergeant Benton. Based on certain things he says, he seems to come from a somewhat privileged background, but little beyond this is known about his pre-unit life.
Family/Friends: Though we don’t meet any of Capt. Yates’ family, during this time, with the Doctor grounded on Earth, the series featured a recurring cast of characters who came to be somewhat of a family. Yates is very close with the Unit team, including Liz Shaw and her successor, Jo Grant. Even when he leaves Unit, he maintains enough of a relationship with Sarah Jane Smith to be able to call her when he discovers something’s afoot at the Buddhist retreat he’s attending.

Andrew checks out the DVD release of Tom Baker story Terror Of The Zygons...
This review contains spoilers.
It's aptly named, is Terror of the Zygons. Its opening episode is a slow-build towards one gloriously unexpected shock moment. Even now, when you know it's coming, it's a brilliant moment of jarring editing. A sudden reveal, a scream, a zoom into a shadowy monstrous face, cue credits. You don't quite have time to process it before its over.
That's after some enjoyably ripe Hammer horror scene-setting in the north-east of Scotland. Tales of ancient horror are spun to incredulous newcomers, and we occasionally cut away to ineffable alien eyes. Most formidable of all, of course, is Tom Baker. Here he's in prime unnerving form amidst a lot of competition. Perhaps there was a competition between him, Lillias Walker and Robert Russell. That would certainly explain a lot.

Who among us hasn’t sat around watching late-Pertwee Who and thought to themselves, “What is the origin of Mike Yates? Clearly he can’t just be some guy who got assigned to Unit. No, there must be something bigger and more grand! A large, epic, origin story! Yeah!” Who ever thought of that?
Right. None of us. None of us ever thought that. None of us ever really wanted a Mike Yates origin story. We all assumed that he was just this guy, you know? That he was there, and did a job and turned traitor, which was the most interesting thing his character ever did. But we didn’t really need nor want to know exactly how it was he came to be with Unit.
What makes this story, the third in the Destiny of the Doctor series, so terribly interesting is that it...

I you have already finished watching Acorn media’s September DVD release of Midsomer Murders Set 18 and were starting to face up to the reality of having to watch the Charlie Sheen-less Two and a Half Men, then do not fear because the BBC DVD’s for September are here.
Jon Pertwee leads the way as Doctor Who in the classic story Day of the Daleks. The pernicious pepper pots take a bit of back seat in this one but it is the most entertaining story of season nine. Recent Best British TV interviewee Richard Franklin appears in it as do the ape like Ogrons and the whole story reaches a thrilling finale with an all out Dalek assault on an English country mansion. It is available in the U.

Part 2 (Including DVD Features) Due Next Week!
Doctor Who: Day Of The Daleks (1971)

Starring: Jon Pertwee, Katy Manning, Nicolas Courtney & Nick Briggs.
Release Date: 12th September 2011 (UK)
For the past 14 years we have endured countless remastered versions of properties that are undoubtedly a big part of our childhood, such as the rapidly forthcoming Star Wars Blu-ray release, which we have heard George Lucas has still been tinkering with his original footage this year. Of course Star Wars has the problem of incorporating modern day technology and full on effects into a film that is over 30 years old and because of which something about it never fully meshes with the original footage (prime example are when Jabba meets Han in Hope and the musical quartet in Jedi).
But when Doctor Who and its creators attempt a remastered version of a...

Last week we saw the noble Doctor doing his best to save some “almost people” from being liquidated. This week we saw the Doctor going on an unprecedented killing rampage. Quite what Jon Pertwee would have made of it all is a point worth considering. Steven Moffat, like his predecessor Russell T Davies, has a penchant for throwing high energy, action packed scenes our way that make no sense and leave the audience scratching their heads. How and why did the Doctor blow up a whole fleet of Cybermen? He could not save Adric, Katarina or even Rose but he can tear the Universe apart to track down a fairly uninteresting, already married Scottish lass?

Pete heads off to the opening night of the big new Doctor Who arena tour. But is Doctor Who Live worth your cash?
Doctor Who has something of a troubled past when it comes to stage productions. 1974's Seven Keys To Doomsday presented an entertaining story, but without the involvement of any of the actors from the television series at the time, while The Ultimate Adventure was anything but, wasting the talents of Jon Pertwee and Colin Baker in a tale which demonstrated some of the era's worst excesses. And the less said about Richard Franklin's vanity piece Recall Unit: The Great T-Bag Mystery, the better.
The latest attempt to translate the Time Lord to the stage is the unimaginatively titled 'Doctor Who Live', currently touring the country.
Nigel Planer stars as Vorgenson, an intergalactic showman who has invented The Minimiser, a device which allows him to shrink...

When I heard that Tom Baker was recording a new series of Doctor Who CD releases for BBC Audiobooks, I almost fell over. I certainly had to sit down. Author Thomas Wolfe told us you can’t go home again. That certainly hasn’t stopped a lot of folks from trying.
After an absence of nearly 30 years, Tom Baker finally returned to the role of the Doctor in the five-part, six-hour BBC full-cast Doctor Who audio play, Hornet’s Nest. The first part, The Stuff of Nightmares, was released in Britain earlier this month and is available from www.audible.com and www.emusic.com.
Of course, Doctor Who fans are so hard to please they make Star Trek fans look like they’ve had a Vulcan neck pinch. So how does the most long-lived and long-scarfed Doctor hold up after such a long layoff?
First, I should point out that the story, like Baker himself, is witty, charming, horrific, and over-the-top. If you don’t like that, you probably don’t like Baker. Here’s the high concept:...
