Chained for Life (2018)Chained for Life, by Aaron Schimberg, shares a name with another film and that is not without some deliberate purpose. Schimberg’s film is not a remake but a reclamation and interrogation of a type of film that showed the limits of good-intentioned art about non-normative groups of people where they are merely subjects and not authors. The prologue to the 1952 Chained for Life, an exploitation film meets rather ludicrous crime procedural, begins with a directive to its audience. “This story has a real problem!” a middle-aged judge says in his monologue to the viewer as he sits down in his office. Directed by journeyman Harry L. Fraser and produced by Poverty Row veteran and jack of all trades George Moskov, this sixty-nine-minute film is more social experiment than anything else. Imagine a Stanley Kramer “problem picture” in low-budget William Castle clothing. The film presents a dilemma...

The 34th annual Atlantic Film Festival (Aff) announced its full festival program, featuring over 190 films and a full slate of special events, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 11-18.
"A film festival’s primary reason for existing is to celebrate film and to say this year’s line up of films and events is a celebration is a dramatic understatement,” said Wayne Carter, Executive Director. “The sheer breadth and quality of films from both our Atlantic region and beyond offers something for everyone and when you match that with special events that deliver an experience to remember we confidently feel we are raising the bar like never before."
“Our Government is pleased to support this iconic event through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, as part of our commitment to building a strong, competitive regional economy, said the Honorable Rob Moore, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency). The Festival generates tangible benefits for our region, opening new doors to international markets for local artists and industry professionals.”
The Atlantic Film Festival’s Gala Red Carpet Opening Night will take place at a new venue this year, the Dalhousie Arts Centre’s Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. Sponsored by NBC Universal, Telefilm Canada and the Canada Media Fund, this star-studded evening will feature the
Opening Gala presentation of "Elephant Song," directed by Charles Binamé ("The Rocket," "Seraphin" ).
Set in 1966, a psychiatrist (Bruce Greenwood) cautiously pries one secret after another from a charismatic but unbalanced patient (Xavier Dolan) concerning the disappearance of the patient’s doctor. What begins as a psychological cat-and-mouse game quickly becomes a far more serious exchange about loss, memory and mystery, with deadly consequences all around. Fuelled by moving performances from an all-star cast, including Bruce Greenwood, Xavier Dolan, Catherine Keener and Carrie-Ann Moss, "Elephant Song" is an exceptional trip into the world of imagination and desire. "Elephant Song" is produced Richard Goudreau and Melenny Productions and is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One.
Following the Opening Gala film presentation is the Opening Night Party. Penned as one of Halifax’s ‘most anticipated parties of the year’, the red-carpet event is once again sponsored by NBCUniversal and will take place at the Cunard Centre on Thursday, Sept. 11.
The Festival's Closing Gala presentation on Thursday, Sept. 18 will be "Maps to the Stars" by director, David Cronenberg. His latest feature film sees the veteran horror director veering into satire, comedy, and social commentary while still providing enough shocks to satisfy his old audience as he courts the new. This time out it is Hollywood itself that is the Toronto filmmaker’s target, telling multiple tales of past-it thespians, desperate wannabees and out-of-control child actors all colliding in a fast-paced, fame-obsessed world where nobody holds anything back. Both funny and terrifying, "Map To the Stars" sees "All About Eve" accelerated into Entourage on steroids.
"Maps to the Stars" is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One.
Featuring the newest and most anticipated films of the year, moviegoers will want to be first in line to see the eight films comprising the
2014 Rogers Special Presentations. Savour the sights and sounds of soon to be award-winning films: ’71 , a moving combat film set during a terrifying riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971; "Foxcatcher," starring Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo; Simon Pegg as a disillusioned psychiatrist on the hunt for meaning in "Hector and the Search for Happiness;" Mike Leigh’s "Mr. Turner," featuring the award-winning performance of Timothy Spall; the hilarious and heart-warming film, "My Old Lady" with Kevin Kline, Kristen Scott Thomas and Maggie Smith; Jake Gyllenhaal’s career-defining performance in Dan Gilroy’s "Nightcrawler;" and Ruba Nadda’s
"October Gale," starring Patricia Clarkson, Scott Speedman and Tim Roth.
The Aff will once again feature French films from Canada and around the world. This year’s Cinéma En Français S.V.P. program will take place from Friday, Sept. 12 to Monday, Sept. 15 and will feature two Gala Presentations. Xavier Dolan’s "Mommy" will be the Gala Français Canadien and Jean-Luc Godard’s "Adieu au langage 3D" ("Goodbye to Language 3D") will be the Gala Français International – reuniting the two Jury Prize winners from this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Rounding out this year’s complete program is a top-tier line up of features and documentaries from Canada and throughout the world. Viewers will delight in a wide range of features such as: François Girard’s "Boychoir;" Kristen Stewart in both "Camp X-Ray" and "Clouds of Sils Maria;" Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s "Coming Home" (Gui Lai); "God Help the Girl" by Belle & Sebastien’s Stuart Murdoch; Cannes opener, "Grace of Monaco;" Sundance winner, "Whiplash;" Palme d’Or winner, "Winter Sleep;" and many more.
Select documentaries include: Nick Cave-focussed "20,000 Days on Earth;" a career-spanning look at one of film’s greatest directors in
"Altman;" the story of Russian hockey dominance in "Red Army;" a look inside Sesame Street’s most beloved character in "I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story;" and an exposé of bird poaching in "Emptying the Skies," among many other captivating and enlightening titles.
Also included in this year’s line up are Short Film Programs, featuring both a Canadian and international selection, a ViewFinders: Films for Youth program, film retrospectives at the Dalhousie Art Gallery, and the Festival’s always popular Late Shift program, which this year will screen the 40th Anniversary Restoration of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Strategic Partners , a one-of-a-kind event focusing on film, television and digital fiction, from across Canada and around the world, will take place as part of Aff, Sept. 11-14. Paris Hilton and Lil Wayne have joined forces for a new Edm-inflected single. "Last Night" features Hilton's breathy vocals over a pulsing pop house beat that sounds more than a bit like an earlier song by her rumored ex-boyfriend, Nick van de Wall (better known as Afrojack).
Consider the following: "Take Over Control," a 2010 banger featuring Afrojack's production and Eva Simons' vocals, introduced van de Wall's sound to mainstream audiences. Listen to the drop, which comes in at 1:02.
Now listen to Hilton's new jawn, specifically the drop at, yes, 1:02:

Hilton, who debuted the track in June at an ill-fated DJ gig, stirred up a bit of controversy by opening a handbag and accessories store in the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

A little while back, I had the distinctive honor of talking to horror film director Nick Millard, the genius behind Criminally Insane, Death Nurse, and dozens of other wonderful films. Mister Millard has been in the biz since the 1960s, starting out making sexploitation films like Uta and Nympho. In 1975 he went into horror with Criminally Insane, and in 1977 he made action movie history with .357 Magnum. Nick has always been one of my all-time favorite directors, ranking with Norbert Moutier, Todd Sheets, James Bryan, and Doris Wishman, so I had to restraint my inner fanboy to bring these words to print. Take it away, Nick!
Adam Mudman – I’ll kick things off in the best way possible; by asking how you got your start. How did this all begin? How were you raised, and how did it impact your decision to become a filmmaker?
Nick Millard – I remember how it started.

Ok, we have to officially start wondering what the hell is going on here. In tragic and bizarre news a man dubbed the Miami Zombie was found eating the flesh of another man, and now new details have surfaced regarding that case, which seems to just be the tip of the iceberg.
According to NBC the girlfriend of the face-eating attacker who mauled 65-year-old Ronald Poppo said her boyfriend was either unknowingly drugged or placed under a voodoo curse. She told the Miami Herald the attacker, identified as 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, was “sweet and well-mannered.” The girlfriend, who asked that her name not be disclosed, said she was shocked to hear her boyfriend was the man everyone was calling the “Miami Zombie.”
Incredibly this isn't the only bizarre incident that has occurred over the last couple of weeks...

Opening with a headshot of chef Ferran Adrià sampling a luminescent fish popsicle in the dark, El Bulli: Cooking in Progress immediately lets you know this isn't just another food documentary. The movie returns to Austin after screening at SXSW this year for a run at Violet Crown Cinema.
A pioneer in the molecular gastronomy movement, Adrià is a controversial chef whose legend is based on the extreme re-imagining and deconstruction of food both common and exotic, and whose restaurant was considered the best in the world. While some dishes are as visually sensual as a Georgia O'Keefe painting, some are more remiscent of an Edward Weston photograph, transcending the commonplace. What looks like a peanut in the shell may actually be completely edible, with a salty "shell" enveloping a liquid peanut, or a mojito cocktail contained within sugarcane.
At the beginning of the film, Adrià and his staff are...

With a reputation a mile high and a 2008 auction record of $1.6 million for a 1925 photograph of a nude, the closest most of us will ever get to one of Edward Weston's prints is looking at one behind glass in a museum. Or so it might seem. Photography long ago has won the battle to be considered a fine art, based not only on the esteem of connoisseurs but on prices that can match notable paintings and sculptures. Still, works by the most lionized photographers of the past century are much more affordable than those of their counterparts in painting and sculpture, and some can look downright cheap in comparison. For instance, one can buy an Ansel Adams (1902-84) photograph for $225, an Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) for $300 and a Walker Evans (1903-75) for just $28. One may...

In Lil Wayne's world this past weekend, Saturday was bleeding into Sunday morning and the one constant was that Weezy was excited to be working. Wayne shot seven videos between those hours for himself, Rick Ross, Drake, Young Money artist Shanell, Travis from Gym Class Heroes and Diddy.
In the latest clip to come into MTV News from Wayne and his videographer DJ Scoob Doo, the Cash Money Mc takes us on a trip to Miami, where he shot scenes for Diddy-Dirty Money's new video "Strobe Lights."
"I'm the hardest-working man in show business," Wayne said on the way to the set. "Shout-out my n---a James Brown. Young Wayne Carter.
"Look at the attitude, though," he continues with a buoyant swagger.

American model Charis Wilson has died, aged 95.
Wilson, the ex-wife and muse of late photographer Edward Weston, was the subject of many of his best-known nude portraits.
She died on Friday in Santa Cruz, California. No further details of her death were released as WENN went to press.
The pair married in 1939, several years after she began posing for Weston. They divorced in 1946, 12 years before his death.
Wilson married Noel Harris, a labour activist, the day after their divorce. Weston and Harris divorced in 1967. Their daughter Anita Kathryn Harris died the same year, and is believed to have been murdered.
Wilson spent her later professional life writing and speaking about her time with Weston. In 1977 she wrote a reminiscence for photography book Edward Weston Nudes, and in 2007 she appeared in a documentary, Eloquent Nude. She also published a memoir in 1999, entitled Through Another Lens.
Wilson is survived by a daughter, Rachel.

A new action picture is set up at Sony Pictures called The Lord's Day which kind of sounds like Die Hard in the British parliamentary system. To be written by Taken writer Robert Mark Kamen, the movie is about a group of terrorists that take over the British House of Lords on the first day of parliament, taking all of the representatives hostage.
Here's where the John McClane element comes into play: one of the politicians inside the building is a guy named Harry Jones. Harry's old job was with the British military and so he's got the combat training to hunt down the terrorists and pull a Nakatomi on their sorry asses. Of course, this being a Die Hard copycat, Harry's job isn't as straightforward as that as he also discovers that there's a sinister plot afoot (dun-dum-dun!) that, in the words of The Hollywood Reporter "uncovers a more...

Taken writer Robert Mark Kamen and Get Smart producer Atlas Entertainment are collaborating on The Lord's Day , an action thriller that's been set up at Sony, says The Hollywood Reporter . Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the project, which is based on a novel by Michael Dobbs, via their Atlas production company. The book centers on a hostage takeover of Britain's House of Lords by terrorists on the first day of a legislative session. The protagonist is Harry Jones, a member of Parliament who is also a former ranking military officer; when Jones attempts to stop the terrorists, he uncovers a more complex and consequential global conspiracy than anyone could have suspected.

The Lord's Day may have originally been intended for rest and reflection, but Sony are using it to go full steam ahead with the Brit action thriller of the same name.Set in the heart of British government, The Lord's Day will follow a terrorist plot to stage a hostage takeover within the House of Lords, which leads to one of the members, Harry Jones - an ex military man - to try and foil the coup, but inadvertantly uncovers a much more serious and widespread conspiracy. The thriller is based on Michael Dobbs' book of 2008. The writer and sometime Conservative politician, nicknamed 'Westminster's baby-faced hitman', also has a film being made of his examination of the Cuban Missile Crisis called One Minute To Midnight. The script will be written by Marmite-man Taken and Transporter scribe Robert Mark Kamen and produced by Get Smart's Charles Roven and Steve Alexander...

He’s like James Bond or Jack Ryan, except his name isn’t James Bond or Jack Ryan. It’s Harry Jones. Okay, so that doesn’t exactly sound like the name of a former badass military soldier turned legislature, but I’m sure it’ll look better than it sounds. At least with Robert Mark Kamen scripting the movie version of Michael Dobbs’ novel, “The Lord’s Day”, we can expect some good action and tense moments. Kamen is good at that, having not only written the surprise hit “Taken”, but all three “Transporter” movies with Jason Statham. “The Lord’s Day” is a siege movie that will be based on the novel of the same name by Michael Dobbs, which sees Britain’s House of Lords being taken over by terrorists on the first day of a legislative session. It’s up to Harry Jones, former military man turned politician,...

If Am 1200 gets transmitted by a festival near you, I recommend you tune in. Qe spotted this little beauty back in October 2008, and now here are the details.
Am 1200 is not your average low budget short. First off, I'm guessing that David Prior pulled in a ton of favors from his Industry mates to ensure this 40 minute flick enjoys a look every bit as professional as a multimillion dollar production. The story is a treat. We start off with Harry Jones (Ray Wise, it's great to watch his face) giving Sam Larson (Eric Lange, also strong) some worldly and drunken advice on how to cheat their uncaring financial firm out of a big chunk of change. It seems that they follow through on the plan but it ends badly as shortly after,...
