I can’t always write about lesser known films. I mean I can, but I think it’s important to look at films known but not necessarily loved within their specific sub-genre. Case in point: Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery (1981), the last film in his loose “Gates of Hell” trilogy, and usually considered the least of the three. It certainly was by me - until my latest viewing, that is; while not epic in scope like The Beyond (‘80) or as atmospheric as City of the Living Dead, it has a straightforwardness that I find refreshing. As straightforward as Fulci can get, I suppose, in all his Fulci-ness.
For those unaware of the late director and the level of his import, we will need to consult with Cushing’s Ghoulish Glossary, which states:

The House By The Cemetery
Stars: Catriona MacColl, Paolo Malco, Ania Pieroni, Giovanni Frezza, Giovanni De Nava | Written by Lucio Fulci, Giorgio Mariuzzo, Dardano Sacchetti | Directed by Lucio Fulci
Lucio Fulci sure had a way with films, especially his “Gates of Hell” trilogy. Arrow Video now complete their Blu-Ray release of the trilogy with The House by the Cemetery (the other two being City of the Living Dead and The Beyond) and what a release. With an excellent picture quality and a disk full of extras this could arguably be the best way to experience the film, other than on the big screen of course.
The House by the Cemetery starts off by throwing blood and gore at you then changes tone with a Shining style warning to a boy from a picture of a little girl at the window of the titular house not to enter it. In a...

Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery (Quella villa accanto al cimitero) is a wrap to a loosely connected trilogy of films regarding the boundaries between the living and the dead, and Catriona MacColl is in all three.
In The Gates of Hell, a priest’s suicide unleashes a zombie apocalypse. The Beyond is about an old estate in Louisiana, which is discovered to harbor one of the gateways to hell. And lastly, in this film, a family is haunted by the undead owner of their new home.
Catriona MacColl and Paolo Malco play a couple, Lucy and Norman Boyle, who move to a small town in Massachusetts so Norman can complete the research of a colleague who committed suicide. Naturally, the couple goes to live with their son Bob in the same house the man committed suicide in. The house was built and inhabited originally by a Dr.

Dr. Freudstein I presume?
If you enjoyed The Beyond and Zombie, Late Night Grindhouse Midnight offerings of the recent past, I have great news! Director Lucio Fulci and his unique brand of Spaghetti splatter is back at the Hi-Pointe Theater this weekend when a 35mm print of his gruesome 1981 shocker House By The Cemetery is screened at midnights as part of Destroy the Brain‘s Late Night Grindhouse film series.
House By The Cemetery opens with the Fulci calling card – a disgusting, splattery murder – a female teen getting a large knife forced in to her cranium until it protrudes through her mouth. The film then settles into the tale Dr. Norman Boyle (Paolo Malco) who accepts a research assignment abandoned by a colleague who has committed suicide. The project requires him to temporarily take up residence in a New England mansion (that’s by a cemetery! – never a good idea!

The House by the Cemetery (Arrow Video) Limited Edition Blu-ray
You may have just mortgaged your life! Shock gore master Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery is one of the finest typically single-minded exercises in zombie terror. Its just a shame no-one told the Boyle family who move into a gothic style house (by a cemetery) with a bloody past and a guts spraying future, what is yet to come! You’d think they’d twig given the basement door is nailed shut that they should get the hell out. Instead they stay long enough to discover their zombified non rent-paying lodger, the cellar-dwelling, flesh-hungry Dr Freudstein and boy is he pissed!

UK gore and horror fans have real reason to rejoice as Lucio Fulci’s 1981 gut muncher “The House by the Cemetery” has at last been passed uncut by the dreaded BBFC. The film now returns to DVD in all its gruesome glory via Arrow Video as part of their Masters of Giallo series, and comes complete with trailers, a deleted scene and a pleasant, if not exactly earth shattering short feature on the legendary Italian director’s career. A fair amount of work has also gone into the packaging, with the original artwork being accompanied by some specially commissioned lurid art that nicely capture the spirit of the film. The film is set in New England, as the unfortunate Dr Boyle (Paolo Malco, also in Fulci’s notorious “New York Ripper”), his wife Lucy (Catriona MacColl, another Fulci and Italian horror veteran, also in “The Beyond” and “City of the...
