Spoiler Alert: Do not read unless you have watched Apple and A24’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which is now playing in select theaters and streaming on Apple TV Plus.
In “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” Denzel Washington plays the titular Lord Macbeth — a Scottish nobleman whose last grasp at power ultimately leads to his downfall.
In addition to memorizing Shakespeare’s powerful soliloquies, the Academy Award winning actor and many in the troupe, including Corey Hawkins (Lord Macduff) and Alex Hassell (Ross), were also required to brush up on their dueling skills for the production, adapted and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Joel Coen.
Neither Washington nor Hawkins were master swordsmen before signing on for the Apple and A24 movie, but Hawkins had previously trained in stage combat and Washington had handled long knives in 2010’s “The Book of Eli.”

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

2021 Muah Awards: ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ and ‘Birds of Prey’ Are Top Makeup, Hairstyling Winners
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” captured the top period feature prizes for makeup and hairstyling at the 8th annual Muahs Guild Awards Saturday night, making it the prohibitive Oscar favorite for the dramatic transformation of Viola Davis as the titular pioneering blues singer. Davis, who landed her fourth Oscar nomination as the sexy, subversive Rainey — the most of any Black actress — was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude for Netflix’s adaptation of the August Wilson play. Davis was fitted with gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair.
Winning both contemporary makeup and hairstyling feature honors at the virtual ceremony was Warner Bros./DC’s “Birds of Prey. He recreated the look of real wooden puppets for the titular hero (played by (Federico Ielapi) and his theater friends by using every prosthetic technique available.

After the cruelest year and amid the weirdest awards season in memory, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Birds of Prey applied two wins apiece to lead the film side of the eighth annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.
With Birds of Prey not among the five nominees for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Academy Awards this month, Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom has emerged as the Oscar front-runner.
Pinocchio scored the night’s final prize for Best Special Make-Up Effects in a Feature at the virtual ceremony held Saturday.
On the TV side, the marquee winners included Bridgerton, The Crown, The Queen’s Gambit, The Mandalorian, Schitt’s Creek and Westworld.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

Horror was in a weird place in the early 1990s. Most of the big franchises of the ’80s had more or less run their course, and in their place were a handful of new “icons” that would be turned into franchises whether it was warranted or not: the Child’s Play movies continued to be a growing concern, as did Candyman and Hellraiser and Leprechaun. One attempt to launch a new franchise that never quite took was 1991’s Warlock, which inspired two sequels of varying quality before calling it quits. All three films are now gathered together on Blu-ray for the first time as part of the Warlock Collection, the latest in the Vestron Video Collector’s Series from Lionsgate.
The original Warlock is genuinely something special—maybe not a new classic, but certainly a really good version of what it is. It’s a film with an impressive...

In the interest of full disclosure, I’ll admit up front that Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir’s character, Remo Williams (aka “The Destroyer”) has played a small, but significant role in my life.
My older sister had been a high-school friend of one of the author’s daughters. Though the passing of time has made the chronology of events a bit hazy, I’m guessing it was through that friendship that I was first introduced to Warren Murphy’s teenage son. It was the son who – upon learning I was a big fan of his father’s pulp-paperback novels – graciously gifted me a personally autographed copy of The Destroyer #3: Chinese Puzzle (1972). This now-tattered paperback proudly sits on my book shelf to this very day. This, I guess, would have been about 1978. I was seventeen years old. I’m fifty-four now and admit I hadn’t...

Director Robert Mandel's F/X is one of the most entertaining and compulsively watchable thrillers of 1986. I originally caught up with it on VHS and, while I was impressed with the film, the ending I found to be both hokey and frustrating, mostly due to the completely out-of-place 1982 song “Just an Illusion” by Imagination that plays over the end credits. I felt that it undermined all that preceded it. However, like William Friedkin's To Live and Die in La (1985) and David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986), F/X is a film that would only grow on me after subsequent repeated viewings. I learned to forgive the inclusion of this song as the final minutes should really be viewed as a visual pun on the film’s overall theme, which begs the question “What is real and what is fiction?”

When Lucio Fulci concluded The Beyond with the words "And you will face the sea of darkness, and all therein that may be explored", he might as well have been referring to the banner year of 1981.
Whatever your genre poison, 1981 delivered it in spades. Werewolves ruled the box office with films that not only redefined special effects artistry but remain stellar examples of modern lycanthropic horror – even today. Elsewhere, Satan's son reared his ugly head for a final conflict while David Cronenberg explored factions of warring psychics with Scanners. Sam Raimi's Candarian demons were unleashed in a Tennessee cabin while seemingly endless droves of slashers stalked theaters across the country. Wes Craven doled out one hell of a Deadly Blessing while The Boogens broke free from a Colorado silver mine, endearing themselves to a whole band of cult aficionados who've remained loyal to a film that, thirty years later,...

For years fans have been hoping that Rituals - starring Hal Holbrook (Into the Wild), Robin Gammell (Lipstick) and Lawrence Dane (Scanners) - would finally arrive to DVD. Hope was risen when Code Red teased about a release for years! ....Well it looks like some good news is finally in sight for fans of this little known horror chiller from the 80's.
According to the Navarre Distribution Services website, Rituals will be arriving to DVD on April 5, 2011! However, you better get your copy quick. Anyone remember Final Exam or Savage Streets with Linda Blair. Those films were released by Navarre for Code Red Entertainment. However, those films became quickly discontinued and the value at times on these films shot up to $100! So if you are intent on getting a copy for your collection, you better do so soon after the film's initial release, unless you're willing to fork over that...

Basement Jack
Karen Cook was your average high school student... until the night evil invaded her life. She would soon be known as the lone survivor of a seven-day killing spree perpetrated by a seventeen year old boy the world would come to call "Basement Jack". For the next eleven years, Karen Cook lived in fear that one day Basement Jack would be released. Then, a court hearing in 2006 found that Jack Riley had not received a...

In Hollywood, it is celebrity which makes headlines, but what lasts longest in this industry is respect The key to respect is something nobody on Earth has the time or experience to analyze, but it is an easy thing to gauge: if you were at AMPAS’s tribute to legendary makeup artist Dick Smith, you saw respect in the eyes of the likes of Rick Baker, Linda Blair, and Hal Holbrook. This salute drew the newsworthy likes of J.J. Abrams and John Landis, but this was merely the audience. The great make-up artist Rick Baker moderated panels that included actor Linda Blair, recent Oscar-winner Greg Cannom, and a host of others who came to express their gratitude for this titan of make-up. You also saw a love for the art of makeup, and, indeed, love for the mastery of any art form, whether it be cinematic or otherwise. And you...

Taking place tomorrow, June 17, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater, 8949 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, CA 90211, a Tribute to Dick Smith will honor the make-up effects legend behind "Scanners" and "Altered States." Robert De Niro’s Mohawk in “Taxi Driver,” Linda Blair’s satanic transformation in “The Exorcist,” Marlon Brando’s jowls in “The Godfather” and F. Murray Abraham’s deterioration in “Amadeus” all have one artistic hand in common, that of the makeup effects master Dick Smith. Smith’s creation of new makeup techniques throughout his career not only transformed the art of motion picture makeup, but inspired a new generation of makeup and visual effects artists who have embraced him as a true visionary and mentor. Smith’s work on the “Old Salieri” makeup for “Amadeus” (1984) earned him an Oscar and he received an additional nomination for his makeup work on “Dad” (1989). Scheduled Panelists Linda Blair (Actress, “The Exorcist,” “Exorcist II: The Heretic...

Well, it’s been seven years since Jason Voorhees chopped up foolish teens exclusively. Sure he shared screen time with Freddy Krueger in 2003’s crossover Freddy Vs Jason, yes he accumulated quite the body count in the film, yes it was a lot of fun, and yes the film was pretty damn successful, but diehard fans such as myself certainly missed that special “alone time” with Mr. Voorhees. Now Jason is back, solely stealing the spotlight and the lives of reckless youngins, and despite a mostly negative critical response and dismal box office staying power, he's still one massive murdering machine.
Over the last 29 years Jason has claimed more victims than even imaginable. From random teens, to strange drifters, to diner employees, Jason has eliminated just about everyone to (unluckily) grace the big screen with the masked menace. As a result of Voorhees’ obnoxious kill rate, fans have pondered the...
