April on Broadway, to mangle a phrase from a showtune classic, is bustin’ out all over with no fewer than 14 new plays and musicals set to open before the April 25 Tony Award eligibility cutoff date. So crowded are the final weeks of the 2023-24 theater season that three days each will see the openings of two shows, a Broadway rarity.
Check this page to see Deadline’s takes. Whether you use this page as a guide or as an invitation to argue, drop by often for the latest on Broadway’s offerings. And there’ll be plenty of offerings indeed — here’s the schedule of April openings: The Outsiders (April 11), Lempicka (April 14), The Wiz (April 17), Suffs (April 18), Stereophonic (April 19), Hell’s Kitchen (April 20), Cabaret (April 21), Patriots (April 22), The Heart of Rock and Roll (April 22), Mary Jane (April 23), Illinoise (April 24), Uncle Vanya (April 24), Mother Play (April 25), The Great Gatsby (April 25).

Joker became a topic of discussion as soon as it hit theaters in 2019. And it's not just that Todd Phillips' movie has an ambiguous morality, completely different from typical comic book movies. The director made the audience doubt the reality of what was happening on the screen, allowing everyone to decide which events really happened and which only existed in the main character’s imagination.
The film was initially positioned as an independent work, in no way connected with comic books and especially with the DC cinematic universe. Joker refers more to the early films of Martin Scorsese, often citing Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy.
And even the makeup of the main character does not resemble the classic image of the Joker, but the famous killer clown Pogo, aka John Gacy. This reference is confirmed by the name of the Pogo club where Arthur performs.

If you’ve been anywhere near a television in the last couple of years, odds are you’re already familiar with Dominic Burgess. The British actor broke through in 2017’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” as actor Victor Buono, before popping up in a number of memorable appearances — playing everything from serial killer John Wayne Gacy in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” to an accident-prone man on “The Good Place” whose hideous red boots create an existential crisis for Chidi.
Most recently, the actor has been stealing scenes as Grayman, the stylist to the grande dames (including Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney) on Apple TV’s “Palm Royale” — and as Hamish Moss, a director on the rise on “American Horror Story: Delicate.” That is, he was on the rise before the April 3 episode, in which Moss met a gruesome death at the hands of Kim Kardashian’s devilish publicist.

The documentary Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV has exposed the horrors of working at Nickelodeon, the children’s television channel. Dan Schneider is once again at the center of the controversy, which has rocked the television industry.
The bombshell revelations in a recent documentary highlighted the abuse that the child actors and other staff were subjected to at the height of its popularity between 1990 and the 2010s. Amidst the allegations of racism and p*dophilia, and actors breaking their silence, another possibly damning piece of evidence has come to light.

Nickelodeon dialogue and acting coach Brian Peck got into many controversies after he was arrested back in 2003 on 11 charges of s-xual abuse on a minor. While this minor was unnamed before, it recently came to light that the one abused was actually none other than the American actor cum musician, Drake Bell.

In a soon-to-be-released ID documentary on Nickelodeon, Bell got candid about all of the times he was s-xually assaulted by Peck. But that wasn’t all, one other critical revelation is also released in this documentary: Peck was actually friends with one of the most brutal American serial killers, John Wayne Gacy.

For the first time, Drake Bell is opening up about being sexually assaulted by Nickelodeon dialogue and acting coach Brian Peck.
“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” the upcoming ID documentary airing March 17 and 18, dives into both the alleged emotional abuse by Nick creator Dan Schneider and the physical abuse by Brian Peck.
In 2003, Peck, 43 at the time, was arrested on 11 charges — including sodomy, lewd act upon a child 14 or 15 by a person 10 years older, and oral copulation by anesthesia or controlled substance — but the minor was not named until now.
“My name is Drake Bell and I came here today to tell my story,” Bell says during the documentary’s third episode, before detailing his close relationship with Peck, whom he met at the beginning of Season 2 of “The Amanda Show.”

If you had asked me to name my favourite killer clown movie a few days ago I would’ve said the original 90s TV version of Stephen King’s It; or the Brian Dennehy starring biopic To Catch a Killer, which told the true story of the pursuit of serial killer John Wayne Gacy. Now? It Has to be All Clowns Are Bastards.
Why? Well writer/director Erik Weise has not only crafted a killer clown movie but also a romantic love story, a fourth-wall-breaking comedy and what – to me – feels like a modern-day take on the classic Troma movies of the 80s and early 90s.

Every town seems to have that one house. The one that children walk by with hushed tones and dare each other to sneak onto the porch or ring the doorbell of. In the movies it’s the Myers House, 1428 Elm (at least in the later movies), or the House on Neibolt Street—usually run down and harboring a frightening history. In my neighborhood growing up, it was not a dilapidated old house, just one that seemed very out of place among the homes of the working class that surrounded it. It was a huge two-story white house, buttressed with gigantic pillars, and surrounded by a wrought-iron fence. I never saw anyone come in or out and I always wondered who lived there. In my mind it was a rich old Mrs. Deagle from Gremlins type, and I wondered, “what’s going on in there?” That question is the engine that...

In the wake of indie horror movie Gacy: Serial Killer Next Door earlier this year, Peacock has ordered their own limited scripted series based on the John Wayne Gacy murders.
The new Peacock series comes from “Dr. Death” creator Patrick Macmanus.
Variety reports, “The announcement was made during the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The series is inspired by the 2021 Peacock/NBC News Studios docuseries John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise, with the scripted series sharing the same name.”
Here’s the official synopsis from Peacock: “From 1972-1978, thirty-three young men were kidnapped, murdered and buried in a crawl space beneath their killer’s house. And no one was the wiser. Not for all those years. Why? He was charming and funny. Had a good, All-American job. Was a community leader. Simu Liu is going back to the future. Well, like, five minutes into the future.
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order for an untitled espionage series starring Liu, in which the “Barbie” actor will play first-generation-American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale. He realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears.
James Wan is among the executive producers on the series, which was written and created by Thomas Brandon (“Legacies”). Other EPs on the project include Michael Clear and Rob Hackett from Wan’s Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone will oversee the project for the production company, which recently merged with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse.
Wan/Atomic Monster and UCP/Peacock are already collaborating on a contemporary horror thriller now titled “Teacup.” Ian McCulloch is writing that one, and executive producing alongside Wan.

André 3000’s debut solo album, New Blue Sun, is out now via Epic Records. Stream it on Apple Music or Spotify below.
The eight-song improvisational instrumental album is different from what fans might be expecting from the OutKast rapper: completely bar-free and no beats. Alongside the jazz musings of co-producer Carlos Niño, core sounds on the record include guitar, synth, and live sampling courtesy of Nate Mercereau, with Surya Botofasina on keyboards and synthesizers. André 3000 himself plays a variety of different wind instruments, including a digital wind instrument, a Maya flute, and others made of wood and bamboo.
“I’ve been interested in winds for a long time, so it was just a natural progression for me to go into flutes,” André said in a statement. “I just like messing with instruments and I gravitated mostly toward wind.”

André 3000 will release his debut solo album New Blue Sun this Friday, marking his first full-length LP since his group Outkast released its last record 17 years ago.
The November 17 release date was announced by André during an exclusive interview this morning with NPR. Though welcome news to fans, André cautioned that the new work might not be what longtime Outkast listeners might expect.
According to André, New Blue Sun will be “an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds; a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, aural organism.” Released on Sony Music’s Epic Records, the album packaging will include a label stating “Warning No Bars,” meaning no rapped lyrics.
During the interview with NPR’s Rodney Carmichael, André said, “I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming! And you play it and like,...

Calls for André 3000 to release a solo record, or another recording with Outkast, have followed the musician for nearly two decades. It’s been 17 years since the last Outkast album, and the expectations around his musical output have only grown in that time — meanwhile, he has been roaming around various cities puttering around with his flute. That meandering has brought André 3000 to New Blue Sun, his debut solo album, set for release on Friday, Nov. 17.

André 3000 has announced the release of his long-awaited debut album, New Blue Sun, which will arrive on November 17th.
Right up front, however the OutKast rapper warns fans that the album is not a rap record. The cover artwork says as much, as it includes a label warning that the album contains “no bars.” Instead, according to NPR Music, New Blue Sun is an 87-minute collection of minimalist and experimental music featuring André 3000 playing a variety of flutes and other wind instruments. There are no bars, no beats, no vocals.
“I don’t want to troll people. I don’t want people to think, Oh, this André 3000 album is coming!

The Amanda Seyfried-starring Netflix horror movie "Things Heard & Seen" may have been obliterated by critics and audiences alike, but the story's blending of a traditional ghost story and a true crime tragedy has fans fascinated with how the film came to be. Based on the Elizabeth Brundage book "All Things Cease to Appear," the tale centers on a woman named Catherine Clare who moves to a small rural town with her husband and daughter who begin to suspect their new home may have been the site of some gruesome events. The family begins to witness supernatural entities throughout the house, going so far as to conduct a seance to try and get to the bottom of the hauntings. However, things take a turn for the damned when Catherine realizes that the true horror in her home is still among the land of the living.

Serial killer true crime stories are a genre in and of themselves — so much so that the repeated revisiting of murderers like Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy almost turn them into clichés that threaten to trivialize the very real consequences of their killings. But rarely are true crime and social justice as cohesively intertwined on the small screen as they are in “Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York,” a four-part docuseries premiering on HBO.
Directed by Anthony Caronna and executive produced by Howard Gertler from Elon Green’s 2021 nonfiction book, “Last Call” pulls back the curtain on the killing spree of Richard Rogers, a male nurse who, as far back as the 1980s and until 2001 when he was eventually caught by authorities, targeted gay men in New York and New Jersey. His reign of terror also fell at a time when queer people were under...

Director Rod Blackhurst’s stark crime flick Blood for Dust is nothing new under the sun — or, more accurately, the frigid sun of Wyoming and Montana, where the story takes place. But with an array of burnished, lived-in performances from a strong cast and an underlying level of suspense punctuated by a few gnarly action scenes, it’s certainly a watchable little genre venture that could find an audience, especially on streaming.
Fargo (both the movie and the TV series) immediately comes to mind in this early 90s-set thriller that feels very much like a product of the early 90s, with lots of caustic dialogue and outbursts of gory violence against a backdrop of Western American desolation. God made man in his own image, and then man defied His orders, so man was cast out from His garden—or so the story goes in the Bible. Directors Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon made a movie based on this, and it’s the 2023 supernatural horror Nefarious. Jordan Belfi plays psychiatrist Dr. James Martin, who goes into a prison to decide whether a criminal (Sean Patrick Flannery) is mentally fit to be executed, but realizes he’s gotten much more than he bargained for. Shot almost entirely inside one room, the movie raises questions about man’s choices and actions with references to heaven and hell, but it quickly starts reeking of propaganda and not so much horror. Here’s what happens in Nefarious.

Gruesome tales of grisly murder. Horror stories of kids in cults. False confessions and authentic admissions.
True crime has taken over the documentary space, proving a reliable audience attractor for streaming platforms, network and cable channels. While it’s the most popular genre within nonfiction programming broadly speaking, whether that will translate to success with Emmy voters remains an open question. One thing’s for certain: there’s no lack of contenders — twisted tales dripping with blood.
Netflix leads the way with multiple suitors, among them Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, the grim story of one of America’s most notorious serial killers, built largely around recorded interviews between Dahmer and one of his young defense attorneys in the early 1990s. The mark of a memorable acting performance is decided by a number of different factors. How well can you display the intended emotion of the scene? Were the strengths of your performance tailored to make the audience scared? Depressed? Joyful? How about a jack of all trades performance that accomplished all of the above and more?

The killer clown trend has amorphous roots, with anthropologists and clinicians failing to settle on where the slow tilt of clowns into full-borne nightmare material originated. It might have been in Ruggero Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" (riffed amazingly in Seinfeld), or it might be considerably grimmer, inextricably tied to the case of American serial killer John Wayne Gacy. In the modern canon -- whether in film, television, or literature -- the prevailing theory is Stephen King's Pennywise from "It," which popularized the killer clown archetype. Some scholars contend it goes beyond a phobia, becoming something akin to a cultural phenomenon.
Of course, horror audiences remember the Great Clown Panic of 2016, a time when, for some reason, people were dressing up as clowns and running around in the dark. While the reporting then was overblown, there's no denying the killer clown dominates the current age of horror. Yet, audiences might forget these clowns have feelings too.

A preoccupation with mass murderers and the people they kill is nothing new for pop culture. Audiences have always been enraptured by violent true crime stories. Still, with the launch of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story on Netflix this year, it feels like a new era of unrepentant bloody rubbernecking began.
Dahmer (we’ll drop the rest of the tortuous title for now) was a mind-blowing true crime hit for Netflix. The 10-episode series that chronicled the saga of the Milwaukee Cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer broke all sorts of record for Netflix en route to becoming its second most popular season of English language television yet (per Netflix itself). The streamer also boasts that the Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan-created, Evan Peters-starring series is on track to reach 1 billion hours of viewings in the coming weeks. So yeah…it was a big deal.

Stephen King's 1986 novel "It," for its overwhelming length and chronological sprawl, centers on a very simple and basic horror premise: clowns are terrifying. Perhaps there was a time in his planet's history when pale-faced, blue-haired ghouls with painted-on smiles and gin blossom encrusted noses were considered charming and delightful, but anyone who recalls that time died over a century ago. In 2022, many might readily agree that clumsy, "comedic" traditional circus buffoons are now merely greasy, manic, and threatening.
The monster in King's novel was an impossibly ancient shape-shifting Lovecraftian space deity that fed on human fear, with the ability to read human minds and manifest what they were most afraid of. Perhaps instinctually, the universal fear shape that this creature elected to take was that of a clown. It gave itself the name of Pennywise, and would hibernate in the sewers under Derry, Me, awakening every 27 years to frighten and eat children.

Ghosts, vampires, and werewolves are old news. Nowadays, if you've got plans for a supernatural saga with a "monster of the week" format, then you better have creativity on your side because a deep-dive into the wide world of folklore is an absolute must.
When the series first began in 2005, "Supernatural" welcomed this challenge, happily digging deep to tell the story of two brothers traveling across America to face off against not-so-mythological creatures. This meant everything from tricksters and changelings to grim reapers and hellhounds. For the initial five seasons that series creator Eric Kripke had planned, it was a brilliant opportunity to explore some lesser-known lore. But if you've heard tell of this long-running show, then you probably know that it didn't end with five seasons. "Supernatural" went on for a whopping 15 seasons.
Across 327 episodes, it really feels like Sam and Dean Winchester faced off against every monster there is.

Plot: After Jeffrey Dahmer’s arrest, his defence team has the ghoulish task of recording hours of interviews with him as he describes the brutal murders he committed during his reign.
Review: Like so many other people, whenever I see a documentary about serial killers show up on Netflix, I binge it. While I’ve yet to dig into Ryan Murphy’s ultra-popular Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, I did check-out Joe Berlinger’s brutal documentary series, Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes. This is the latest instalment of what I can only assume is an ultra-profitable series for the streamer, with previous instalments focusing on Ted Bundy & John Wayne Gacy.
What makes these docs so disturbing is that they essentially allow the killers to tell their own stories. While Bundy was elusive until the end, Gary and Dahmer were boastful about their kills, relaying them in gruesome detail.

I literally stared into the abyss of evil and saw things most people shouldn’t see.” So Joe Berlinger, the director behind Netflix’s new Jeffrey Dahmer documentary, tells me over Zoom one sunny autumn afternoon. He is bespectacled with a grey beard and an avuncular whiff of Mandy Patinkin about him.
Through those glasses, Berlinger has seen more than his fair share of things most people shouldn’t. Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, is out this Friday. It comes, very intentionally, two weeks after Ryan Murphy’s controversial dramatisation of events – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters – hit the streaming platform. The Netflix streaming service is having huge success with the series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (read our review Here), so the upcoming docuseries Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes is probably going to be a success for them as well. Conversations with a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes is the third of a series of Conversations with a Killer shows, which started with Ted Bundy and continued with John Wayne Gacy. Here’s the information on this one:

The blood was in the water for Netflix's "Dahmer" well before the series hit the streaming platform on September 21, 2022. The awkward full title aside ("Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story"), the series should have been Netflix gold: it combined the streamer's knack for dramatic true-crime storytelling with the star power of Evan Peters and Ryan Murphy. Certainly, there's been no shortage of content about or inspired by serial-killers in recent years, especially on Netflix.
So why did "Dahmer" drop with such a quietly squishy plop?
"Dahmer" did not received the traditional Netflix treatment, which is never a good sign. As Stuart Heritage notes in The Guardian, the lack of marketing and manufactured buzz for the series screams of low-faith from the streamer:

Fifty years from now when we look back to explore what sort of entertainment defined the 2010s into the 2020s, true crime and serial killer stories will absolutely be at the top of the list. Birthed out of the true-crime podcast boom of the 2010s which led to the true crime docuseries/adaptation explosion we're currently living through, filmmakers and screenwriters have been forced to get a lot more resourceful with their crime stories, considering the truth is often stranger than fiction.

Netflix is set to spotlight the gruesome true crimes of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for the third installment of "Conversations With a Killer" and the streamer already has a premiere date. Season three, titled "The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes," will debut on Oct. 7, according to Netflix. The three-part documentary is not to be confused with Netflix's other project, "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" from "American Horror Story"'s Ryan Murphy and Evan Peters.
Unlike the forthcoming limited series (which has yet to set a release date), "The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes" will feature "never-before-heard audio interviews between Dahmer and his defense team," which delve "into his warped psyche while answering these open questions of police accountability through a modern-day lens," per Netflix.

Ahead of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series “Dahmer,” starring Evan Peters as Jeffrey Dahmer (first look up above), Joe Berlinger‘s true crime series “Conversations With a Killer” is back for a third season that will also profile Jeffrey Dahmer, Variety reports this afternoon.
“Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes” premieres October 7, 2022.
Here’s the official synopsis for the upcoming three-part series…
“When Milwaukee police entered the apartment of 31-year-old Jeffrey Dahmer in July of 1991, they uncovered the grisly personal museum of a serial killer: a freezer full of human heads, skulls, bones and other remains in various states of decomposition and display. One of the scariest movie villains of 2022 so far is the Grabber (Ethan Hawke), the antagonist of Scott Derrickson's supernatural horror film "The Black Phone." The otherwise unnamed villain is a child abductor and killer, plucking kids off the streets in 1970s Colorado. The Grabber isn't onscreen for much of the movie and we learn practically nothing about him, but he's memorable thanks to two important things.
One: Hawke's terrifying performance; who would've thought that a usually reserved performer like Hawke could do a great Robert Englund? Second, the masks. Throughout the film, the Grabber wears an assortment of carved, demonic masks. The upper half of the mask bears horns and eye holes, while the lower halves alternate from a smile to a scowl to no mouth at all.
Even more impressive, these creepy masks actually came about as a result of a change from the source material. In...

Screambox original documentary Pennywise: The Story of It uncovered a wealth of insight into the 1990 Stephen King adaptation. Five years of work from co-directors John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser) paid untold dividends for horror fans.
With exclusive interviews with many of the miniseries’ key players – Pennywise himself, Tim Curry, cast members Richard Thomas, Seth Green, Tim Reid, and Emily Perkins, director Tommy Lee Wallace, writer Lawrence D. Here are six things I learned from Pennywise: The Story of It.
1. George A. Romero was originally attached to direct.
King and George A. Romero were fans of one another’s output, which ultimately led to their friendship and several collaborations, but both wanted to work together more.

When John Wayne Gacy was apprehended in 1978, his modus operandi of targeting teenage boys and history of working as a part-time clown turned him into one of the most notorious and recognizable figures in criminal history. His crimes were partially responsible for the introduction of "stranger danger" discussions, the idea of a house having a crawl space became subject to paranoia, and his horrific reign of terror became the inspiration for the "Galesburg Grabber" in Joe Hill's short story, "The Black...

After a few years toiling away in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where he directed and co-wrote 2016’s Doctor Strange before leaving the sequel, director Scott Derrickson is back where he belongs. The purveyor of two of the best horror films of the past 20 years—2005’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose and 2012’s Sinister—Derrickson is again in his genre element with The Black Phone.
He’s also put his preferred team back together too, as The Black Phone reunites Derrickson with Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill, as well as that picture’s star, Ethan Hawke. Also coming off the bench for this one is famed author Joe Hill, whose short story of the same name is the basis of this sharply focused, frightening, and ultimately moving thriller.

Exclusive: A podcast about the disappearance and murder of a number of Grateful Dead fans is the latest audio series to be adapted for television.
Joe Berlinger, the filmmaker behind iconic rock doc Metallica: Some Kind of Monster and a slew of true-crime docuseries, has teamed up with Wheelhouse Entertainment to develop Dead and Gone as a scripted series.
The podcast, a true crime music mystery set in the world of Jerry Garcia’s psychedelic rock band, comes from To Live and Die in LA producer Tenderfoot TV and Disgraceland producer Double Elvis.
It tells the story of how the bodies of Mary Regina Gioia, 22, and Gregory Allen Kniffin, 18, two fans of the Grateful Dead, were found in the San Francisco Bay, beaten and shot to death in August 1986.
Thirty-one-year-old Ralph International Thomas, a Black man, was arrested and sentenced to death for the murders. He died in prison in 2014, after multiple unsuccessful appeals.
