The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.
Le Besco has worked in front of the camera since she was eight, and by her early 20s was already a face of French auteur cinema, with two César nominations — for her performances in Benoît Jacquot’s Sade (2000) and Cédric Kahn’s Roberto Succo (2001) and a best actress honor in Venice for Jacquot’s L’Intouchable (2006).
Her directorial debut, 2004’s Demi-Tarif (Half-Price), the story of three young siblings, Romeo (Kolia Litscher), Launa (Lila Salet), and the youngest, Leo (Cindy David), left on their own in a rundown Paris apartment, was an unmediated look into the world of childhood and drew praise from the likes of Mia Hansen-Løve, whose review,...

The R-rated Kiss of the Damned marks Xan Cassavetes’ feature debut behind the camera, continuing the family tradition as the sister of the brilliant Nick Cassavetes.
The film debuted at Venice last year, and the early reviews suggest that the film brings a new (or, in some ways, old) take to the vampire genre, with nods to the horrors of past decades, and bringing in an explicit sexiness to the fare.
Magnet will be putting the film out through VOD next month, before a theatrical Us release date in May. And now Yahoo Movies have debuted the first red-band trailer to give us a taste of what to expect.

Indie-film producer Jen Gatien (“For Ellen,” “Hounddog”) has pulled together a new project that will bite the hand that doesn’t feed. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Justin Daly, “Douglas Brown” is a Hollywood satire inspired by the inside knowledge he gleaned from grandmother Ingrid Bergman. James McCaffrey, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Zoe Bell, Bill Sage, Dan Hedeya and Robert Forster star in the “Player”-esque story of a reclusive movie star who hires a private detective after he’s anonymously blackmailed. Things turn violent when an aspiring writer is fingered for the crime in a dangerous case of mistaken identity. “It is always incredibly gratifying to work with first-time directors and give a platform to an unheard voice,” says Gatien, “but since I have known Justin since our high school years, it means that much more. Over the years, I have seen Justin work tirelessly to make this film...

#33. Jack and Diane - Bradley Rust Gray If Bradley Rust Gray's drama horror romance is going to be included at the fest this year, it all depends on the kind of strategy Magnolia Pictures decides to employ. The distributor already has a strong relationship with the fest (previously providing titles such as Timecrimes and Troll Hunters) -- add that to the blogger buzz the pic has been receiving, the cast of young indie starlets in heat and the fact that Bradley's wife should also be at the fest with her latest means we can reasonably expect a Park City at Midnight showing for Jack and Diane. #23. The Girl is in Trouble - Julius Onah We can bet that this picture is a lock --- a 2012 debut was probably a more accurate prediction for a festival premiere to Julius Onah's debut feature. I predicted that The Girl Is in Trouble and the Filmmaker Mag 25 New Face Onah would be in Park City -- that production still stands. If this has an edgy, mean streak in it, a Park City at Midnight showing would be welcome. Gist: Written by Mayuran Tiruchelvam and Onah, August’s one night stand with beautiful Signe turns ugly when he discovers footage of a murder on her phone. He knows the dead guy – Jesus Guzman, a dealer. And the killer – Nicholas Feinman, son of New York’s most powerful investment banker. There’s a knock on the door - It’s Angel, Jesus’ brother and feared drug enforcer. Maybe August knows where Jesus is?...

#19. For Ellen - So Yong Kim Fans of So Yong Kim have been waiting for what seems to be an eternity for her third oeuvre to make a festival appearance. After hoping for a showing at Sundance and the major film fests this year, I'd be willing to bet that the filmmaker and producer will travel the festival circuit with not one but two films in 2012 - For Ellen might just be joined to the hip to Bradley Rust Gray's Jack and Diane. I expect this to be included in the Dramatic Competition Section or a Premieres section showing and find a subsequent festival release in Berlin. Gist: This tells the tale of Joby (Dano), an aspiring young rock star, finally agrees to sign divorce papers with his estranged wife (Malone), he discovers that he is about to forfeit all custody of his six-year-old daughter, Ellen. Never having been in Ellen’s life before,...

It'll be back to back production years for the Xan Cassavetes. The eldest daughter of the indie maverick is putting the final touches on her vampire love triangle Kiss of the Damned, a film that should preem at a major film festival in 2012 and now she has lined up her next project entitled 1000 Days of Rage and Hope which will begin lensing in NYC next April. Cassavetes re-teams with Deerjen Film's Jen Gatien and executive producer Jonathan Vinnik who both return in the same capacity as they did for Kofd. Written by Cassavetes, the project sounds very much apropos with the current economical climate and outspoken dissidents on Wall Street and is described by the filmmaker as "a woman with a radical mentality navigates the complexities of relationships, poverty and dreams in New York City, as she analyzes her own complex and deep seated relationship with capitalism." Cassavetes who got...

Read our exclusive interview with Jen Gatien, who served as one of the producers on the new documentary ‘Limelight.’ The film, which was directed by Billy Corben, chronicles the rise and fall of the nightclub career of Gatien’s father, Peter. Known as the king of the 1980s New York City club scene, Peter built and oversaw an empire and helped create the culture that defined an era. However, his club empire declined in the late ’90s after Mayor Rudy Giuliani cracked down on nightclubs. After pleading guilty to a tax evasion charge, Peter was deported back to his native Canada. ‘Limelight’ also features interviews with some of the government officials,...

If you don't count TV doc Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession, we can finally say that Xan Cassavetes has joined her sis, her bro and her pops as a feature filmmaker. In fact, Variety reports that her debut film, Kiss of the Damned has already wrapped and had French thesps Josephine de la Baume (bit role in Gavras' Our Day Will Come and soon to be seen in Confession of a Child of the Century) and Roxane Mesquida (Catherine Breillat regular) and Milo Ventimiglia toplining with supporting roles going to Michael Rapaport, Anna Mouglalis and Riley Keough, who probably received a thumbs up recommendation from Nick Cassavetes (she starred in Yellow). Gist: The Variety piece mentions that some of the films to have influenced the filmmaker/cinephile include: Tony Scott's "The Hunger," Bernardo Bertolucci's "The Conformist" and Harry Kümel's "Daughters of Darkness."
