- Older brother of Claude Gauvreau, painter, member of the Automatistes group, he signed with his brother and others the Refus global Manifesto authored mainly by Paul-Émile Borduas. He later was a screenwriter and movie and TV producer while continuing to paint.
- He had three children with artist Madeleine Arbour and was after that the companion for 35 years of painter Janine Carreau.
