Sixty years ago, on February 9, 1964: The Beatles make their legendary American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. A record-shattering 73 million people tune in to see John, Paul, George, and Ringo for the first time. It’s the biggest audience any musicians have ever faced. But there’s no evidence that any of the Fab Four are the least bit worried they might fail. The U.S.A. gets a look at these cocky kids, hears their radical new electric noise, and—crucially—sees a theater full of girl fans screaming in ecstasy.

At the 1959 American International Toy Fair in New York, an 11.5-inch plastic ingénue with improbably bombshell proportions made her debut. In her earliest iteration, Barbie was marketed as a “Teen Age Fashion Model” and was based on the German Bild Lilli doll that Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler had seen during her travels to Europe.
At the time, Bob Mackie was studying costume design at the since-closed Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles’ Westlake neighborhood. He would go on to a legendary career in fashion and entertainment, but already his eye for the female form was well defined. When he first saw Barbie, he was not impressed.
“I didn’t think she was very fashionable,” he says of the doll, who originally sported a simple black-and-white Chevron swimsuit, hoop earrings and a perky blond ponytail.

As Billy Wilder prepared to make "Some Like It Hot," his classic comedy about two jazz musicians forced to go on the run as women after they witness a gangland massacre, he found himself in a bit of a casting quandary. His first choices for the roles of the casanova saxophone player Joe and nervy bassist Jerry were, respectively, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Though he eventually cast the stars he wanted, getting United Artists to accede to his demands was a circuitous process.
The primary stumbling block was Lemmon. The then 34-year-old actor was very much in demand after winning Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Ensign Pulver in John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy's blockbuster "Mister Roberts," but he was under contract to Columbia Pictures at the time, and considered unbankable as a leading man. Though Lemmon had given Wilder a verbal commitment to star alongside the already signed Tony Curtis,...

Leslie Phillips, Debonair British Actor of ‘Carry On,’ ‘Doctor’ and ‘Harry Potter’ Films, Dies at 98
Click here to read the full article.
Leslie Phillips, the British actor and Casanova of the Carry On movies who turned to serious supporting roles in Out of Africa and Empire of the Sun before voicing The Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter franchise, has died. He was 98.
Phillips died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, agent Jonathan Lloyd told the BBC on Tuesday.
With an eye for the ladies onscreen and off, the sophisticated Phillips appeared in more than 170 roles across screens big and small, portraying policemen, military officials, reverends and judges. But for audiences in the 1950s and ’60s, he was synonymous with the low-budget Carry On and Doctor series (he took over from Dirk Bogarde in the latter).
In the ’80s, he distanced himself from his playboy roles to lend gravitas to Sydney Pollack’s Oscar best picture winner Out of Africa (1985) and to Steven Spielberg’s...

Billy Wilder's "Some Like it Hot" is a game-changing comedy that continues to define the genre over half a century since its release, but it came very close to becoming a totally different picture. The incredible lead performances from Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe came to define the film, but the casting department almost went in a completely different direction with the role of Jerry/Daphne.
"Some Like it Hot" stars Lemmon and Curtis as two big band musicians looking for a quick buck. When they hear of a traveling band looking for a saxophone and a bass, they think it's kismet — there's just one catch: the band is all women. Desperate for work and in debt all over town, the two men disguise themselves in drag and join the band, where they meet Marilyn Monroe, a seductive but turbulent ukulele player.

Mitzi, who was born Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber, has counted on her resume such titles as actress, singer, and dancer. “Starring the Plaza” by Patty Farmer (Beaufort Books, Hardback, Illustrated, 130 pages Isbn#: 0825308461)
One of New York’s biggest film stars isn’t even a person…it’s The Plaza, the legendary hotel on Central Park where numerous classic movies have been shot. Author Patty Farmer reverently captures the allure of the fabled place in her new book “Starring the Plaza”, which pays tribute to one of Gotham’s truly grand dames (she dates back to 1907). Cinematically, some celluloid gems stand out in our minds: Cary Grant being kidnapped there in North By Northwest, Streisand and Redford as briefly reunited former lovers outside the hotel in The Way We Were and Walter Matthau starring in numerous Neil Simon comedy skits in Plaza Suite. The wonderful anecdotes are accompanied by 180 photos, making this an irresistible addition to any movie lover’s book collection.

For this week's episode of our cinematography series Hit Me With Your Best Shot we wanted a slight curveball as a way to celebrate the release of the Costume Design documentary Women He's Undressed. It's now available to rent on iTunes or purchase on other digital platforms. (Jose's interview with the director here). The film is about the legendary Orry-Kelly, who designed a truckload of classic Hollywood features and stars, and won three Oscars in the 1950s for An American in Paris, Les Girls and Some Like It Hot. So those playing "Best Shot" this week could choose any of those three. I watched Les Girls since it gets the least attention and they even use its image for the documentary's poster (left).
Les Girls (George Cukor, 1957) is not well remembered today but curiously it reminds us yet again that mainstream Hollywood in the 50s and 60s paid a lot...

Ron Moody as Fagin in 'Oliver!' based on Charles Dickens' 'Oliver Twist.' Ron Moody as Fagin in Dickens musical 'Oliver!': Box office and critical hit (See previous post: "Ron Moody: 'Oliver!' Although British made, Oliver! turned out to be an elephantine release along the lines of – exclamation point or no – Gypsy, Star!, Hello Dolly!, and other Hollywood mega-musicals from the mid'-50s to the early '70s.[1] But however bloated and conventional the final result, and a cast whose best-known name was that of director Carol Reed's nephew, Oliver Reed, Oliver! found countless fans.[2] The mostly British production became a huge financial and critical success in the U.S. at a time when star-studded mega-musicals had become perilous – at times downright disastrous – ventures.[3] Upon the American release of Oliver! in Dec. 1968, frequently acerbic The...

Martha Stewart: Actress / Singer in Fox movies apparently not dead despite two-year-old reports to the contrary (Photo: Martha Stewart and Perry Como in 'Doll Face') According to various online reports, including Variety's, actress and singer Martha Stewart, a pretty blonde featured in supporting roles in a handful of 20th Century Fox movies of the '40s, died at age 89 of "natural causes" in Northeast Harbor, Maine, on February 25, 2012. Needless to say, that was not the same Martha Stewart hawking "delicious foods" and whatever else on American television. But quite possibly, the Martha Stewart who died in February 2012 -- if any -- was not the Martha Stewart of old Fox movies either. And that's why I'm republishing this (former) obit, originally posted more than two and a half years ago: March 11, 2012. Earlier today, a commenter wrote to Alt Film Guide, claiming that the Martha Stewart featured in Doll Face, I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now,...

Any event that reunites Broadway’s Bye Bye Birdie stars Dick Van Dyke and Chita Rivera, then brings together Astaire (Fred’s daughter Ava) and Kelly (Gene’s widow Patricia) is top-shelf as far as I’m concerned. Tonight, when Jimmy Fallon takes over The Tonight Show, it may sound woefully out-of-date to suggest that he in any way wants to be, or should be, or is going to be “the new Johnny Carson.” The very phrase reeks of Vegas mothballs. Over the last two decades, starting with the moment when Jay Leno launched his Attack Of The Nice Guy blandified makeover, The Tonight Show has effectively been de-Johnny-fied, and Fallon, who is 24 years younger than Leno (and would be 49 years younger than Carson if Carson were still alive), represents a brand new generation — or maybe I should...

Jeanne Crain: Lighthearted movies vs. real life tragedies (photo: Madeleine Carroll and Jeanne Crain in ‘The Fan’) (See also: "Jeanne Crain: From ‘Pinky’ Inanity to ‘Margie’ Magic.") Unlike her characters in Margie, Home in Indiana, State Fair, Centennial Summer, The Fan, and Cheaper by the Dozen (and its sequel, Belles on Their Toes), or even in the more complex A Letter to Three Wives and People Will Talk, Jeanne Crain didn’t find a romantic Happy Ending in real life. In the mid-’50s, Crain accused her husband, former minor actor Paul Brooks aka Paul Brinkman, of infidelity, of living off her earnings, and of brutally beating her. The couple reportedly were never divorced because of their Catholic faith. (And at least in the ’60s, unlike the humanistic, progressive-thinking Margie, Crain was a “conservative” Republican who supported Richard Nixon.) In the early ’90s, she lost two of her...

The closest ever-lovely leading lady Michelle Williams has come to movie musicals is singing briefly (though prettily) as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn. (See above.) Still, The Daily Mail reports that the three-time Oscar nominated actress has been offered the lead role in an in-development remake of the 1959 movie musical South Pacific, which memorably starred Mitzi Gaynor as Ensign Nellie Forbush. There is also buzz that the filmmakers are looking to pursue "someone like Justin Timberlake" for the role of Lieutenant Cable. Rather than pulling inspiration from the Gaynor movie, author/screenwriter Lynn Grossman penned a "richly developed" script that harkens back to the source material for Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1949 Broadway production, a Pulitzer prize-winning novel by James Michener called Tales of the South Pacific. Songs like "There Is Nothing Like A Dame," "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Hai" and "I.m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta...

So here's some interesting news of the day: Bob Balaban is producing a remake of the musical "South Pacific." It's a bit surprising, considering his credits as a producer thus far have been few, with "Gosford Park" the most notable, but yeah, he's hoping to give the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical a contemporary big-screen redo. And he's found someone to possibly be his new Mitzi Gaynor. Michelle Williams has been offered the part of Nellie Forbush, in the movie that will chronicle the romances that bloom between an American nurse and an expatriate Frenchman in the South Pacific, and a U.S. lieutenant and a Tonkinese woman, as race issues play out in the background. And that's really about all. According to the Daily Mail, this version of the musical will incorporate the songs more organically by hewing closer to the novel by James Michener that first inspired the stage show.

Chicago – This weekend is the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) Classic Film Festival, and few movie stars alive represent that classic status better than Miss Mitzi Gaynor. Whether co-starring in movies with Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe, or starring in the film version of “South Pacific,” Mitzi Gaynor always inspires the old “razzle dazzle.”
Francesca Marlene de Czanyi Von Gerber – nicknamed Mitzi – was born in Chicago, and her family moved to Hollywood when she was eleven. She started singing and dancing with the Los Angeles Civic Opera at age 13, and managed to get a contract – and a new last name – with 20th Century Fox Pictures at age 17. Her star shined during the last gasp of glitzy movie musicals in the 1950s, co-starring with Marilyn Monroe in “There’s No Business Like Show Business” (1954), Frank Sinatra in “The Joker is Wild” (1957) and Gene Kelly in “Les Girls” (1957).

Chicago – If a “Mount Rushmore” of American film critics was ever considered, one of the men that would be a strong candidate is Leonard Maltin. An influential film essayist, critic and historian since the 1960s, Maltin also wrote the go-to directory for film buffs prior to the internet, “Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide.”
Maltin’s love of film began in his childhood in Teaneck, New Jersey. He turned that love into self publication at the age of 15, distributing “Film Fan Monthly,” a fanzine dedicated to films from the golden age of Hollywood. This publication led to the next phase in his life, which he relates in a story below. The “Leonard Maltin Movie Guide” became the bible for film lovers – again before the internet – solving many a movie dispute and leading to the phrase “let’s look it up in Maltin.”

There are ten free screenings in all, enabling fans around the country to get a taste of what people experience when they attend TCM’s Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles, now in its fourth year, and scheduled for April 25-28. Jane Powell is a pleasure to be with, a gracious and charming woman who belies her age and doesn’t hide it, either. (She’ll be 84 next month.) It’s hard to believe that she made her film debut some 70 years ago...

Taciturn hero of film and television westerns
In Hollywood, in the days when men were men, Dale Robertson, who has died aged 89, was considered the epitome of masculinity. In the Clarion Call episode from O Henry's Full House (1952), a giggling, snivelling crook, played by Richard Widmark, whom Robertson, a cop, has come to arrest, keeps calling him "the beeg man". Robertson, an ex-prize fighter, was indeed "beeg" – tall, well-built and ruggedly handsome, with a gravelly voice. He was tough but fair to men, and courteous to ladies, particularly in the many westerns in which he starred in the 1950s, and in his most famous role, that of special investigator Jim Hardie in the TV series Tales of Wells Fargo.
He was born Dayle Lymoine Robertson, in Harrah, Oklahoma, and attended Oklahoma Military Academy, Claremore, where he was named "all around outstanding athlete". During the second world war, he served with Patton's Third Army,...

Kerr in the 1958 box-office blockbuster musical South Pacific (seen above with love interest France Nuyen) and his (few) other post-Tea and Sympathy efforts [Please check out the previous article: "The Two Kerrs in the stage and film versions of Tea and Sympathy."] Director Curtis Bernhardt's Gaby (1956) was a generally disliked remake of Waterloo Bridge, with Kerr and leading lady Leslie Caron in the old Robert Taylor and Vivien Leigh roles (1940 movie version -- and even older Douglass Montgomery and Mae Clarke roles in the 1931 film version). Jeffrey Hayden's The Vintage (1957), starring Kerr and Mel Ferrer absurdly cast as Italian brothers, also failed to generate much box-office or critical interest. MGM leading lady Pier Angeli played Ferrer's love interest in the film, while the more mature and married French star Michèle Morgan (a plot element similar to that found in Tea and Sympathy) is Kerr's object of desire. Given her enduring appeal fifty years after her death, it can easily be argued that Marilyn Monroe was the signature pop culture icon of the 20th Century and her allure is lasting well into the next century. Last year, I read Max Allan Collins’ take on Marilyn’s death before watching Michelle Williams portray her in My Week with Marilyn. Her career has become the spine for the NBC series Smash. Her image is found in commercials, artwork, music videos, calendars, and on and on. While her appeal and persona don’t grab me, I respect her impact on America and the world.

They've tried everything. One host. Two hosts. Four hosts. 32 hosts. Comic hosts. Serious-thespian hosts. Hollywood-legend hosts. Young hosts. Old hosts. Hip hosts. Square hosts. Singing-and-dancing hosts. Every year, it seems, the Academy Awards goes back to the drawing board to figure out what sort of emcee will keep the show lively, attract viewers (especially younger viewers) and keep them from flipping channels during the slow parts. It's a thankless gig; no wonder Billy Crystal, who's done it eight times, decided to sit out for eight years before agreeing to return to host this year's Academy Awards on Sunday night. The job requires a difficult and rare set of skills: a host must entertain both the Hollywood big-shots in the auditorium and regular folks at home. They can poke fun at the huge egos in the room, but can't deflate them with too much snark, and they can't be too inside-baseball.

“Drive” actually topped “Descendants” on the evening, claiming four trophies including Best Actor for Ryan Gosling and Best Supporting Actor for Albert Brooks.
Elsewhere, Viola Davis won Best Actress honors for her role as a Southern housemaid in “The Help,” while Jessica Chastain (who appears alongside Davis in Tate Taylor’s drama) took home Best Supporting Actress honors for her work in Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life.” At this stage of the race, it appears like Chastain’s the one to beat in the Best Supporting Actress race … so long as voters can come to a consensus on which performance they’d like to honor.

Gilbert Cates, best known as the man behind a record 14 Academy Awards ceremonies, died last night (Sept. 31) in Los Angeles. The 77-year-old director and producer collapsed in a parking lot on the UCLA campus; emergency personnel were unable to revive him. Although the cause of death isn't known, Cates reportedly had undergone heart surgery about a month ago. "Gil was our colleague, our friend and a former governor of the Academy," Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak was quoted as saying in an official statement from the Academy. "He was a consummate professional who gave the Academy and the world some of the most memorable moments in Oscar history." Cates won an Emmy for the 63rd Academy Awards ceremony in 1991, his second stint as Oscarcast producer and the year Dances with Wolves won Best Picture. Between 1990 and 2008, he was nominated for 12 other Emmys for his Oscar shows.
