There’s no question that the James Bond film franchise – the second longest-running such series in cinema history after Godzilla – comes with certain expectations in the minds of viewers. We can predict, mostly like clockwork, that 007 will wear a tux at some point in every film, he will bed at least one or more beautiful women, he’ll drive an Aston Martin (or some other high-end vehicle), and that he’ll have one polite conversation with the villain before the shooting really starts. There will also be a surreal, psychedelic credits sequence, often a big action scene before the credits, and so on.
But all those iconic trademarks of the Bond film franchise didn’t happen overnight. They were gradually introduced, especially in the early films, with some of them springing from the original Ian Fleming books and others invented by the filmmakers who adapted them. Some have remained virtually the same since their inception,...

The era-defining rapper and producer has spent the last ten years making his first feature film, The Darker the Shadow, the Brighter the Light, almost entirely by himself. He discusses creativity, avoiding musical nostalgia – and why he loves the National Trust
In Dr No, there’s a casino scene featuring Sean Connery as Bond. He’s playing chemin de fer, against the icily beautiful Sylvia Trench (Eunice Gayson). Bond is the bank, cool in a penguin suit, and, when Sylvia asks his name, he replies – of course he does: “Bond. James Bond.” Now, we all expect him to do it, but in 1962, when Dr No was released, it was the first time Connery ever spoke those words on screen.
And Connery said them right here, at Les Ambassadeurs casino, off glitzy Park Lane in London. “Yeah, just through those doors,” says Mike Skinner, Aka the Streets, rapper, musician, writer, producer and now,...

Sequels are practically as old as cinema, with the very first thought to be The Fall of a Nation (1916), a cheapie knockoff/follow-up to the incredibly racist The Birth of a Nation from a year earlier. Ever since Hollywood has been keen to cash-in on sequels and ongoing sagas. Before the term “movie franchise” was even a glint in a studio executive’s eye, MGM was churning out high-quality Thin Man movies at MGM throughout the 1930s and ‘40s while Universal was introducing us to both Dracula’s Daughter (1936) and Son of Frankenstein (1939). One must wonder why the studio never got those two crazy kids together.
And yet, while sequels have been around forever, they’ve generally been seen as lesser-than until recently. By their nature, sequels are derivative, and there have been many filmmakers who were all too happy to embrace sameness while filling their working hours before and after lunch.

This article contains No Time to Die spoilers.
One of the most surprising pop culture moments of last year was the climax of No Time to Die, the 25th film in the James Bond franchise and the final to star Daniel Craig as 007. There’s a fuller explanation of the story and ending here but what it comes down to is that, at the end of his battle with the villainous Safin (Rami Malek), a gravely wounded and infected Bond chooses not to make a spectacular escape and sacrifices himself so that Safin’s lair and the deadly pathogen he had developed are utterly destroyed by a missile strike… and Bond along with them.
Not only does Bond resign himself to his death, but he acknowledges (via radio) being deeply in love with Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) despite five years of estrangement and suspicion. She in turn reveals that her daughter,...

A version of this story about Judi Dench first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Dame Judi Dench and and Sir Kenneth Branagh’s twelfth collaboration since they met in 1987 was a auspicious one: Playing her longtime friend’s grandmother in his autobiographical coming-of-age drama “Belfast” earned Dench her eighth Oscar nomination.
“It is good, always, to know somebody so well that you have a kind of shorthand with them, which I have with Ken because we’ve worked together for such a long time,” Dench told TheWrap. “But this was a very personal story to him and we all, I think, felt a tremendous responsibility to him to get it right. And I hope that’s what we did.”
Dench’s career, of course, was thriving for decades before she and Branagh crossed paths. She spent years in the London theater beginning in the 1950s,...

He plays Bond, James Bond, but not for much longer. Daniel Craig has inhabited the role of the iconic secret agent for the past 14 years and counting, but he’s officially saying goodbye to the character with No Time To Die, his fifth outing as 007. Craig’s tenure has been a mixed bag, to be honest, but hopes are high that he’ll be given a fitting sendoff next April. And this new teaser trailer is sure to only ramp up the hype even more, offering up thrilling set pieces, exhilarating action and another globetrotting journey.
Alongside Craig, the supporting cast from 2015’s Spectre are set to return, too. For one, the MI6 gang are present and correct – so that’s Ralph Fiennes (M), Naomie Harris (Eve Moneypenny), Rory Kinnear (Bill Tanner) and Ben Whishaw (Q). After much delay, production’s finally about to begin on Bond 25, the currently untitled fifth movie for Daniel Craig as James Bond. The film’s expected to bring back a few familiar faces from past installments in the franchise, but if this new rumor’s to be believed, it’ll also buff out the cast list with two names that would be huge coups for the series.
SassiLive is the Italian publication that broke the story that Bond 25 would be filming in the Sassi Di Matera in Italy with an expected April start date. The same article also makes the much bolder claim though that both Emma Stone and Dakota Johnson will be “probable” stars of 007’s next adventure, joining returning Bond girl Lea Seydoux opposite Craig.
Before we proceed any further, we should note that this rumor’s a bit suspect in many ways. For one, it...

Stage and screen actor who found fame playing Sylvia Trench, the first Bond girl, opposite Sean Connery
Eunice Gayson, who has died aged 90, was an actor with a film, television and theatre career that spanned several decades. Despite this, she will be forever associated with her unique place in cinema history as the first Bond girl.
Exactly eight minutes into the running of the 1962 film Dr No, Sean Connery utters the words “Bond, James Bond” for the first time, in answer to a question from Gayson, whose character has introduced herself at the card table as “Trench, Sylvia Trench”. With typical efficiency, Bond adds Miss Trench to his list of conquests shortly after their casino encounter and he later finds her hitting golf balls in his apartment dressed only in his shirt. Their playful exchange is momentarily interrupted when he is summoned to Jamaica on a mission, a clear demonstration...

Actress Eunice Gayson, who made screen history by playing the first love interest of James Bond on the big screen, has passed away at age 90. Gayson played the sexy, single woman Sean Connery's 007 encounters at a high end gambling club in the first Bond thriller "Dr. No" in 1962. Gayson's character set the standard for future "Bond Girls" by portraying an independent, self-assured woman who had no pangs of guilt in regard to engaging in a sexual relationship for the pure pleasure of it. In fact, it is she who seduces Bond, turning up in his apartment and putting a golf ball while clad only in one of his shirts. The character, Sylvia Trench, also appeared in a brief love scene with Bond in the second film in the series, "From Russia with Love". Gayson got the role because she had worked with director...

"Miss Anders... I didn’t recognize you with your clothes on."
It's been 50 years this month since James Bond first made the leap from the printed page to the silver screen with the release of Dr. No in theaters. Six different actors — Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig — have played Ian Fleming's timeless character over the decades and, while his spy gadgets and cars may change, you can always count on Bond to surround himself with beautiful, resourceful, and downright deadly women.
Considering February is Bond Month on Reelz, we thought this would be a great time to look back at the sexy women who have helped to make James Bond the cultural icon of masculinity he has become. Is Ursula Andress's Honey Ryder still the top Bond Girl, the pinnacle of spy intrigue sex appeal, or is it time to christen a new queen?...

Deborah Lipp, the Ultimate James Bond Fan, is listing 007 of her favorite things as we count down to Skyfall
I spent a couple of years compiling lists made by James Bond fans; primarily favorite movies, least-favorites, and ranked lists of the whole series. The fun thing to discover is, when it comes to James Bond, everyone's an outlier. Every single movie appeared on someone's favorites and someone's least-favorites. Plus, everyone's list had a unique feature, an eyebrow-raiser. I bet if we did a poll here -- should we do a poll here? -- the same thing would happen.
So, eyebrow-raiser and all, here's my top 007 Bond films...
001 From Russia With Love (1963)
To me, the second Bond movie is the greatest of them all. It's the perfect blend of Bond ingredients: Action, adventure, exotic locations, sex, mystery, espionage, music, humor, visual impact, and an outstanding cast. Beyond Sean Connery and the...

The James Bond franchise turns 50 this year and with the 23rd Bond film Skyfall set to open on 26th October in the UK and on 9th November in North America, what better a time to reflect on 22 films and 50 years of Bond history?
It is for good reason that James Bond is considered a British treasure – almost escaping the boundaries of fiction to exist in a near-regal status to the extent that he was included in the Opening Ceremony for this year’s London Olympics alongside the Queen herself. Over those 22 films, the character has gone through various physical changes, moving away from the self-conscious camp of former versions to the grittier, darker Bond that we currently have with Daniel Craig.
But one thing has always remained – that unquantifiable cool factor that makes Bond one of the most enduring and recognisable figures from the glorious and colourful history of cinema.

As James Bond prepares for his 23rd official outing in Skyfall and to mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time I have been tasked to take a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
Ian Fleming died just one month before the release of the third James Bond film, Goldfinger in August 1964. Even though both Dr. No and From Russia With Love had been successful and well received it was not until Goldfinger that James Bond truly became a worldwide phenomenon and it is a tragedy that Fleming never lived to see the full impact his creation had on popular culture.

Following the huge success of the first James Bond film Dr. No, producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were keen to start production on a follow-up. With United Artists offering the pair $2 million, double the budget of Dr. No, to quickly get a sequel in the works Broccoli and Saltzman were left to decide which of Fleming’s novels to adapt next.
In an interview with Life magazine the then Us President John F. Kennedy had mentioned the Bond novel From Russia With Love in a list of his top ten favourite books.

Last night at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London, BAFTA paid tribute to the production designer Sir Ken Adam, who turned 90 last year. Sponsored by the Albert R. Broccoli and Dana Broccoli Foundation, guests enjoyed a champagne reception followed by the event which was hosted by Matthew Sweet who introduced the many guests who took to the stage and honoured the great designer. Coming to you weekly from my vantage point in good old Blighty, it’s Slashfilm UK. Anglos and Anglophiles rejoice. This week's is a special installment including 90 minutes of audio to stream or download. During last weekend's rollicking Fan Fest event at the London Film Museum, I was honoured to host three on-stage Q&As. The first was with Stephen Lang, Avatar's Colonel Quaritch; the second was with Richard Kiel, aka James Bond villain Jaws, and Blanche Revelac, who played Jaws' love interest, Dolly; and the last was with Bond girls Eunice Gayson and Madeline Smith. Here are audio recordings of those sessions, each one picking up just after I was introduced to the stage. You can either right-click on the following links to download them, or just play them in your browser. Stephen Lang - discussing Avatar, his acting career and, just a little, Conan [audio:http://media.libsyn.com/media/slashfilmcast/Stephen_Lang_Slashfilm.mp3] Richard Kiel and...

Former Bond girl Eunice Gayson has vowed never to undergo cosmetic surgery - because the wrinkles on her face tell the "story of her life".
The actress, who played sultry Sylvia Trench in Dr. No and From Russia With Love, admits she was born with natural good looks, but she's never been tempted to resort to the surgeon's knife to turn back the years.
Gayson says, "I am 76 and proud of it. I feel great and I am well. (Cosmetic surgery) is not for me. My face is the story of my life - it's the good, the bad, the successes, the failures - there have been some of those! The happiness, the childbirth - it's all there. I'm fond of my face. It's part of my soul, part of my heart, my mind. Why would I want to negate that, submit myself to the surgeon's knife in exchange for what I consider to be a blank canvas? I inherited good genes from my parents, I admit that, this makes a lot of difference (because) it's a good head start, excuse the pun."
And Gayson insists she learned an important lesson about her looks after a beautiful pal was disfigured in a car accident.
She adds, "I had a wonderful friend who (Italian portrait artist Pietro) Annigoni painted. He said she was the most beautiful woman in the world.
"She was disfigured in a car accident and she said to me - at that time I was very young and immature and terrified of what I saw in this (hospital) bed, and she said, 'Don't worry, I still have my painting.' And that set me thinking: It's all inside of you. And she overcame it and she became more beautiful because her soul became more beautiful. Before she was beautiful, now she was ravishing."...
