Mexican director Diego Luna’s Abel (2010), a beguiling comedy-drama about a strange young boy, throws up many more questions than answers. For a while it appears that young Abel might be both catatonic and possessed of telekinetic powers, such is the effect of his brooding presence on household objects. Later, I wondered whether the story was veering off into the territory of a body-swap comedy. One thing is clear, though: Luna’s film is a heartfelt depiction of a devoted mother who is determined to do right by her troubled son.
The face of nine-year-old Abel (Christopher Ruíz Esparza) is first seen in huge close-ups as he watches a snail crawling along his finger. After two years in the psychiatric ward of a local hospital, doctors now want to transfer him to Mexico City. His mother Cecilia (Karina Gidi) can’t bear the idea of a further separation and hopes...

Diego Luna makes a fine directorial debut with this insightful satire on Mexican family life
As an actor, Diego Luna made his name as the horny teen starring opposite Gael Garcia Bernal in the 2001 movie Y Tu Mamá También; now he makes an accomplished debut as a feature director with this enigmatic satirical nightmare, set in Mexico, on the theme of patriarchy and the family. Abel (Christopher Ruíz-Esparza) is a disturbed nine-year-old in a psychiatric hospital, having suffered a breakdown and retreated into silence, apparently as a reaction to his father's abandoning the family three years before. His mother Cecilia (Karina Gidi) persuades the doctors to allow him home, where Abel begins to speak, eerily inhabiting the persona of the missing dad: talking sternly to the teenage daughter, demanding his breakfast etc. The family plays along – and Luna shows how Abel's delusion answers their need to have a man about the house,...

Mexican actor, Diego Luna's fascinating directional debut, Abel, tells the story of a mentally ill nine year-old boy who becomes convinced he's the man of the house when he returns from the hospital for a trial week at home.
No longer able to stay in the women's ward, Abel's mother is distraught when told he might need treatment further afield in Mexico City Hospital. Convinced his mother's love and the reassuring natural presence of his brother, Paul, and sister, Selene, will cure him, she's given a week to see if his new surroundings will prompt an improvement. Within a day, Abel is miraculously talking again, but what he utters is rather puzzling.
Initial signs of Abel's deluded belief that he's the man of the house afford moments of surreal light comedy as he fixes the toilet; takes up the good parent's nightly rounds of putting the children...

Sundance-bound and tired of flipping through each film individually on the schedule? Staying comfortably home, but don't want to be left out of the conversation about the indies likely to dominate the discussion for the next year? Well, we've got a guide for you.

Tons of Park City alumni are bringing their latest films, but I'm a bit surprised that March-pegged releases of The Weinstein's All Good Things and Focus Features' Greenberg aren't getting a Park City push. Instead, as expected, Sony Pictures Classics will show up and they get to showcase Get Low and A Prophet (Spotlight section) once again, and they'll preem Holofcener's Please Give. Overture will introduce Philip Seymour Hoffman's directing debut (Jack Goes Boating) and Fox Searchlight will preem Duplass Bros.' untitled comedy, which I'm calling Center of Attention - because its a great title considering the subject matter. - With the biggie announcements in the Premieres sections, I think I'm officially batting .300 with my predictions. On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.
The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:
Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.
The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.
Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the out-of-competition section of Premieres. Some very anticipated films that we have been tracking are included. Films like The Runaways, starring Kristen Bell and Dakota Fanning as the 70s girl rock group headliners, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie. We have also been following The Company Men and Nowhere Boy, so we are excited to see these films at Sundance 2010.

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.
Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).
I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).

Yesterday we were happy to bring you the Competition Line-Up for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, which we'll be covering in January live from Park City, Utah.
