On Monday night, November 27, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, the Gotham Awards presented the winners at their 33rd annual event. “All of Us Strangers” went in with a leading four bids, followed by “Past Lives,” “The Zone of Interest” and the TV limited series “Beef” with three apiece. But who prevailed? Scroll down for the full list, updated throughout the night.
The nominations were decided by panels of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators. The winners were then selected by juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors and others directly involved in filmmaking. That makes these awards unique and often results in surprising winners like “The Rider” for Best Feature in 2018 over the higher-profile “The Favourite,” or Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”) for Best Lead Performance in 2022 over eventual Oscar winners Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) and Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”). A 4K Steelbook! Haven’t seen this show lately, and discovered that it holds up remarkably well. Mr. Qt’s sophomore outing made an indelible mark on American movies — the darling of hipster crime filmmaking dazzled viewers with showcase set-piece scenes, entertainingly profane dialogue and ultra-hip inside-out time-shuffling narrative tricks. Add to that genuine star turns, especially Uma Thurman and John Travolta’s iconic dance scene. It’s old-fashioned movie-going in an avant-garde pattern, with raw violence and even rougher language. The stars include Samuel L. Jackson, Harvy Keitel, Ving Rhames, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer and Bruce Willis.

Joining the other two movies in the world of Blu-ray, Lionsgate has officially announced that the Silent Night, Deadly Night Collection is joining the Vestron Video Collector’s Series.
Featuring all-new special features, the Silent Night, Deadly Night Collection includes Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out, Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation, and Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker. All three movies are worth watching for their own reasons – Sndn 3 stars Bill Moseley as the killer, while Sndn 4 is just plain bonkers and has very little to do with the franchise or even Christmas at all – but in my personal opinion it’s Sndn 5 – starring Mickey Rooney! – that is the true underrated gem of this oddball franchise.
You can expect to own the collection on December 13, 2022.

Exclusive: U.S. distributor K Street Pictures has taken on world rights to feature drama Last Call (previously known as Dominion), starring Rhys Ifans and John Malkovich.
Rodrigo Santoro, Romola Garai, Tony Hale and Zosia Mamet also star in writer-director Steven Bernstein’s (Decoding Annie Parker) black-and-white pic about Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
The film is a fictional portrait of Thomas’s last day at New York watering hole the White Horse Tavern, leading up to his untimely death at age 39. Ifans portrays the bohemian word master who had reached significant celebrity during the 1950s with such poems as Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night. Malkovich plays the poet’s confidant and enabler, Dr. Fenton.
The movie was first shown at the Rio film festival in 2016 and then again at the Tallinn film festival in 2017 but producers claim those were unfinished versions of the film and that additional...

Quentin Tarantino may be one of the biggest filmmakers in the world, but he’s never lost the drive to foster young talent. The director received an AFI Honorary Degree in summer 2016, and he returned the favor to the American Film Institute last month by speaking to a group of AFI Fellows at the AFI Conservatory’s Opening Day. The audience was made up of first and second-year Fellows.
While speaking with AFI Conservatory Dean Richard Gladstein, who was an executive producer of “Reservoir Dogs” and a producer on “The Hateful Eight,” Tarantino opened up his toolbox to provide aspiring writers and directors his biggest tip on how to find the perfect story to tell. Most of the audience had not made their first feature, so Tarantino used “Reservoir Dogs” as the perfect anecdote for storytelling inspiration.

When Diane Keaton accepted the 45th AFI Life Achievement Award from Woody Allen in Hollywood Thursday night, it was the end of one of the more memorable AFI tributes. And as one actress after another explained why Keaton was such a significant role model — from Oscar-winners Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon (Keaton-directed TV movie “Wildflower”) and Meryl Streep (“Marvin’s Room”) to Rachel McAdams (“The Family Stone”) and comedienne Lisa Kudrow (“Hanging Up”) — it struck me that all actresses should pay attention to why Keaton is so admired and emulated.
Here are some wise lessons to be learned from the star of “Play It Again Sam,” “The First Wives Club,” “Crimes of the Heart,” “Shoot the Moon,” and HBO’s “The Young Pope.”
1. Stay single.
Keaton launched her Hollywood career with the day-long wedding scene in “The Godfather,” at the end of which she and fellow theater outsider Al Pacino proceeded to get royally drunk.

“Saving Brinton” will premiere at this year’s AFI Docs Film Festival, taking place from June 14 – 18. Set in rural Iowa, the film follows history teacher Mike Zahs as he uncovers the century-old showreels of Frank Brinton, one of America’s first motion picture impresarios, and sets out to premiere the films at a historic local opera house. Zahs’ findings include rare footage of President Teddy Roosevelt, the first moving images from Burma, and a lost relic from magical effects godfather Georges Méliés.

The American Film Institute Conservatory has a new dean in producer Richard Gladstein, and he shamelessly chased down the job.
Gladstein — president of Film Colony, producer of Best Picture Oscar nominees “Finding Neverland” and “The Cider House Rules,” as well as a bevy of Quentin Tarantino movies — comes to a Los Feliz hillside campus that is still bruised after two fractious years under the last dean, Jan Schuette, who last November agreed to step down at the end of June.
No one is more surprised than Gladstein at how much he wanted the gig. He put in a long stint with Harvey Weinstein at Miramax Films, where he started as head of production in 1993. “Oddly it was the same day that Disney bought the company,” he said. “So my first-day press conference with Jeffrey Katzenberg was my initiation. The AFI feels akin to that. The place is bursting with creativity,...

Like so many budding filmmakers of his generation, Doug Liman got his start in movies by fiddling with his father's Super 8 camera. Then aged eight, Liman "Picked it up, started making movies with it, and never stopped."
By the time he'd reached his early 30s, Liman's ambitions had finally paid off. His films Swingers and Go, released in 1996 and 1999, were made cheaply and recouped healthy profits. Urgent and effervescently told, they were the product of a young, talented filmmaker on the rise. Liman's rising profile soon saw him land the kind of deal that a few dozen other hopefuls would have sold their souls for - Universal signed him up to make a film based on Robert Ludlum's spy thriller, The Bourne Identity.

Did Quentin Tarantino stumble this time out? His tale of western killers sharing a snowbound cabin builds almost zero suspense, and the verbal excess and violent grossness lack Tarantino's usual clever, wickedly funny edge. And 70mm cooped up in a dim interior? It's A Long Day's Journey into Lincoln Logs. Totally dig Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ennio Morricone, though. 'Finding Neverland' movie: Johnny Depp as James M. Barrie, with the Llewelyn Davies family: Kate Winslet, Freddie Highmore, Joe Prospero, Nick Roud and Luke Spill. 'Finding Neverland' movie review: Losing reality Back in 2001, German-born director Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, World War Z) brought a much welcome non-Hollywood touch to the independently made psychological drama Monster's Ball. Besides the daring (if way overlong) sex scenes, that film imparted a refreshingly realistic atmosphere that was much enhanced by Forster's minimalist approach. As the title implies, his follow-up effort, Finding Neverland (2004), has absolutely nothing to do with reality, whether Peter Pan author James M. Barrie's or anyone else's. Even so, Forster's early, no-nonsense directorial touch is sorely missing from what is little more than your usual big-studio holiday movie whose “magical moments” might as well have been created by a computer. 'Finding Neverland' plot: James M. Barrie...

There are still seven days to go until I can (officially) discuss the greatness of The Hateful Eight, but let me peek my head out for a minute and say that those who see it really, truly should do so in 70mm. This is more than a matter of cinematographic pleasure, no matter how much you’ll find therein; it’s also a pretty key part of the experience, with an overture and intermission showing a very nifty structural gambit on Quentin Tarantino‘s part.

After months of speculation, the full cast line-up for Quentin Tarantino’s next pic, The Hateful Eight, has officially been announced. Following Deadline’s breaking news this morning, which suggested Channing Tatum was circling a part in the western, The Weinstein Company delivered a press release to verify the rumours.
The statement outlines an impressive list of names that’ve long since been linked to the project and who precisely they’ll be playing. Those we already knew; Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen and Bruce Dern comprise the main cast, with Tarantino newcomers Demian Bichir and yes, Channing Tatum rounding out the full roster. The last minute ‘tacking on’ of Tatum’s involvement in the release suggests it was hastily included in a rush after Deadline’s scoop. Twenty years ago today, Quentin Tarantino and Harvey Weinstein unveiled the filmmaker’s sophomore movie — an ambitious anthology of crime stories, all interconnected and metatextualized — at a late Saturday night screening at the Cannes Film Festival. A little over three hours later, as the crowd staggered out of the Palais des Festivals, they knew they had an audience favorite on their hands. Soon, they would be able to add Palme d’Or winner, Best Picture Oscar nominee, the first indie film to break the $100 million mark, a gamechanger and a modern classic to the list.

The Time Being
Directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain
Written by Nenad Cicin-Sain and Richard N. Gladstein
USA, 2013
A passionate starving artist is at the center of The Time Being, an overly portentous new drama that doesn’t see such a central figure as being too stereotypical. No, this is a movie about how Art is Serious, so serious, in fact, that focusing entirely on one’s work trumps trivial matters like work, family, friends, and more. Though the movie is packed with pretty images, thanks entirely to the skill and craft of its fairly overqualified cinematographer, The Time Being is a mostly limp portrait of the artist as inwardly selfish and ambitious.
Wes Bentley plays Daniel, so dedicated to his art—he paints based on photographs he takes of the world at large—that one could imagine this guy as being Ricky Fitts from American Beauty all grown up; this man...

A riveting mystery drama about living, dying, illusion and reality. In one of the most atmospheric films to come out of California in some time, debut director Nenad Cicin-Sain helms a screenplay by himself and Richard N. Gladstein in the film “The Time Being.” A film ostensibly about painters and painting, the story is more about obsession, self-knowledge and difference between artistic expression and ego. An exciting work by a first time director, this films portends greatness for Cicin-Sain. Wes Bentley plays struggling artist Daniel who is fighting a losing battle balancing his obsession with artistic expression with his relationship with his wife Olivia (Ahna O'Reilly) and his five year old son Marco (Aiden Lovekamp). Time Crime: Cicin-Sain’s Debut an Empty Trinket
On a positive note, the benefit of watching Nenad Cicin-Sain’s directorial (and screenwriting debut) could definitely serve as a testament for the necessity of a well-written screenplay in the filmmaking process. Co-written with producer Richard N. Gladstein (also a feature screenplay debut), The Time Being is an underwhelmingly written piece of cinematic sod, made all the more disappointing for sporting a dazzling visual scheme and fantastic original score. An elaborate set-up moonlighting as a mystery thriller morphs into a confoundingly stagnant familial drama.
A struggling artist, Daniel (Wes Bentley), pursues his artistic endeavors to the detriment of his family’s economic well-being. A recent art exhibit of his work doesn’t result in any sales, but a possible commission is called into Eric (Corey Stoll), who has funded the exhibition space. Daniel Day-Lewis as Vincent Vega? Almost two decades after the release of Quentin Tarantino's game-changing Pulp Fiction, it's impossible to imagine anyone else in the role made famous by John Travolta. But in a new Vanity Fair expose on the making of the 1994 Oscar winner, Travolta's career was so "cold" that producer Harvey Weinstein fought it tooth and nail.
Here are five shocking truths about the making of the movie, taken from the March issue of Vanity Fair, on newsstands in New York and L.A. on January 31 and nationally and on the iPad, Nook, and Kindle on February 5.
Pics: 13 Must-See Movies of 2013

In the 19 years since "Pulp Fiction" hit theaters, the film that made Quentin Tarantino a superstar has become a bona fide cinematic classic. Hell, it was a classic from the moment it first screened at the Cannes Film Festival. But as a new oral history of the film in Vanity Fair shows, "Pulp Fiction" was almost a very different film.
Forget Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis and John Travolta. How about "Pulp Fiction" starring Paul Calderon, Matt Dillon and Daniel Day-Lewis?
Yes, crazy as it sounds, that was almost the cast of "Pulp Fiction," with the most intriguing prospect being the idea of Day-Lewis (who is likely about to win his record two billionth Oscar for "Lincoln") in Travolta's iconic role as Vincent Vega. Day-Lewis, as it turns out, had read the script and desperately wanted the role, but Tarantino was dead set on Travolta, even though Travolta's career was essentially over.

Let’s get the story straight or at least as straight as I can remember it. One cold winter’s eve I sat down with a four pack of Burton Baton from Dogfish Head and drank the whole damn thing plus an Insanely Mad Elf and probably some vodka. Maybe more beer. In fact I find it highly unlikely that in the time where I was a freak booze hound with a penchant for micro brews with an abnormally high amounts of alcohol and sugar that I wasn’t pouring at least one more six pack down my gullet. Why do I “confess’ this? Because when I was imbibing the spirits of the season I was watching Silent Night, Deadly Night parts 3, 4 and 5 for the very first time and while I enjoyed 4 and 5 (you know how I feel about 3), part 4 has come to be somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine.

A prominent theater owner once told me a story about two production assistants hustling it out for little pay on a Dolph Lundgren workout video. Part of the video involved Lundgren running down a sandy hill, so when they needed to do more takes, the PAs had to smooth out the footprints in the sand (of which, yes, there was only one set). The two PAs threw themselves into the task with such gusto that the director was awe-struck. They rolled on their sides down the hill, happily did any other task necessary and even grabbed a dog turd bare-handed to get it out of a shot on a sidewalk. The director talked about them to everyone, claiming they were the best PAs he’d ever seen in his career. One of them was apparently Quentin Tarantino. It’s a bit of a myth that he learned about movies exclusively by working at a video store, and...

The Time Being
Directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain
Written by Nenad Cicin-Sain and Richard N. Gladstein
USA, 2012
It seems like Wes Bentley is stuck in some kind of inauspicious circle. In 1999, he, like every other benefactor in the film, was elevated to instant recognition when Sam Mendes’ American Beauty burst onto the scene (at Tiff no less). Playing the dodgy camcorder shutterbug Ricky Fitts, Mr. Bentley has been hard pressed to find a notable role since, until his performance as Seneca Crane in the 2012 movie adaptation of the popular book, The Hunger Games.
Seemingly back on form, Nenad Cicin-Sain’s The Time Being, however, has Mr. Bentley play a similar character to his breakout role in American Beauty, and one has to wonder if his career arc is again on the decline; especially considering the fact that this movie isn’t nearly as incisive.
In The Time Being, Mr. Bentley is Daniel,...

Ever since his breakout role as Ricky Fitts in 1999′s American Beauty, Wes Bentley has always been an actor worth looking out for. Gladstein, the feature film writing debut for both, and the first clips from this film has now been released, and can be seen below.
