One picketer said it best: “The longer this strike goes, the more detailed these signs get.”
Judging by some of those Simpsons-themed placards, he’s not wrong. But there have also been lots of not-so-veiled references to some of the ongoing strike coverage. (Don’t recognize the reference to Carol Lombardini and The Cheesecake Factory? Read this story. Can’t remember the exact quote about putting people out of their homes? That notorious line originated here.)
Some of the signs also just show signs of fatigue. “I’m gonna be honest I’m running out of clever sign memes,” said one. “Cause, like, seriously?”
It’s now day 120 of the WGA strike and Day 47 of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Here’s what some picketers have to say these days about walking the line.

Monk fans rejoice! According to Tony Shalhoub, a Monk revival film project is happening. Speaking with Dr. Loubna Hassanieh on Unheard Stories, Shalhoub said that, after 13 years, a Monk film is in development for streaming with original cast members returning.
Monk is the USA series that follows Adrian Monk (Shalhoub), a brilliant former San Francisco detective who aids the police as a private consultant who battles with an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Ted Levine, Stanley Kamel, and Bitty Schram featured alongside Shalhoub in the original series. Monk lasted for eight seasons, totaling 125 episodes.
“We’re doing a Monk 90-minute movie for streaming, and we’re going to start shooting that in May,” Shalhoub told Dr. Loubna Hassanieh. “It’s Monk post-covid, so he’s in trouble. So we’re bringing everybody back, all of the characters for a 90-minute streaming thing.”
Oh boy! I bet Monk does not handle the Covid pandemic well.

Woody Harrelson has caused controversy by making an anti-vax joke during his opening monologue on Saturday Night Live.
Appearing on last night’s episode (25 February), the True Detective star, 61, told a long and rambling story about the “craziest script” he’s ever read.
He took about six minutes to get to the punchline, after getting distracted talking about smoking weed, his love of drinking and what kind of tree he was sitting against when he read the script.
Eventually, he concluded: “So the movie goes like this. The biggest drug cartels in the world get together and buy up all the media and all the politicians and force all the people in the world to stay locked in their homes.
“And people can only come out if they take the cartel’s drugs and keep taking them over and over.”
The actor told an awkwardly quiet crowd: “I threw the script away.

HarperCollins imprint Blink Ya Books has acquired publishing rights to Devastation Class, the sci-fi book series penned by Glen Zipper and Elaine Mongeon. That’s the project to which Greg Silverman’s Stampede snapped up rights last fall with an eye on a feature film adaptation. That came before any publishing deal; now, the new two-book pact calls for a 2020 street date.
The plot follows an unlikely group of young cadets forced to mutiny aboard a revolutionary starship to save themselves from an annihilation force of invading aliens. When their escape transports them to a reality they don’t recognize and reveals unimaginably terrifying secrets, they must fight their way home to save not just everyone they love — but also all of human civilization. Standing in their way is an insurmountable enemy, a mystery eons in the making and the fabric of time and space itself.

Ninety-five members of the Writers Guild of America have signed a letter sent to the guild’s board of directors urging that it divest from gun companies and any companies that support the NRA.
The letter, sent to the Board Tuesday, warns “Gun violence enabled by the ready availability of military grade weapons, has become one of the biggest threats to the safety and security of the American people.” The letter continues, “We urge the WGA and the WGA Pension Plan to divest of all stocks of any gun or ammunition manufacturer, and any company that provides material support to the gun industry lobbying organization called The National Rifle Association, whether through donations, deductions or other means (e.g. Federal Express), until such time as sensible national gun reform legislation is passed.”

Mere marketing tool, or thumping good read? Here, David praises the greatness of movie novelisations…
They’re the novels film buffs love to read, and collect omnivorously. The books take up at least a single shelf, and their collectors smile, impressed, at the way a multi-million dollar scene sparkling with special effects can be effectively emulated in prose. Or maybe that’s just me.
But seriously: haven’t you ever watched Lethal Weapon and thought, “This should have been a book!” If you ever have, then track down and pick up Joel Norst’s paperback version and see how he can make maverick cop Martin Riggs jumping off a building while clinging to a hysterical civilian just as breathtaking as when Mel Gibson does it onscreen.
Or how about when James Bond free-falls over a cliff in Goldeneye? Check out veteran Bond novelist John Gardner’s take on it. These scenes,...

One of the joys of the Warner Archive program is that movies and television shows for small groups of fans can be released. The restoration costs seem to have reached a reasonable scale and these direct-to-order projects don’t really require the bells and whistles higher profile releases deserve. As a result, we can revel in the stuff we grew up or recall fondly. In my case, that includes a ton of Hanna-Barbera and Ruby-Spears stuff that has been coming out over the last year or two. It also meant I finally got a good copy of the pilot to the Search series.
And while some will turn their noses up to those offerings, they may begin salivating at some of the others that have been released; titles which I personally find not worth our time and attention. One such series is the short-lived NBC clunker Man from Atlantis, best...

We’re dreadfully behind in citing the overabundance of our contributors’ latest releases. There are already enough to fill three bookcases, but here are even more!
Michael Mallory mostly contributed to Comics Scene. He has Two recent books of great note: Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy Of Horror (Universe Publishing, hc, $40). This is a sumptuous coffee table book chronicling those iconic Universal Studios versions of the various monsters: Count Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Phantom of the Opera, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and others. Chapters on each (and coverage of such Universal actors as Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney Jr. & Sr.) offer mostly familiar stories (and rather too much plot synopsis) for those already enamored of the subject. Newcomers to the Universal arena, however, will be entranced by the text. The best part of the book is the visuals...

Starlog contributor and TV writer-producer Lee Goldberg’s latest Monk novel is now in mass market paperback: Mr. Monk Is Miserable (Obsidian, $7.99). This volume takes the compulsively clean hero to France and the foul sewers of Paris—and the title is a reference, actually, to Les Miserables. You can also find his previous book, Mr. Monk Goes To Germany (Obsidian, pb, $7.99), on shelves. The latest one, Mr. Monk And The Dirty Cop, debuts in hardcover this very week (Obsidian, $22.95). Back in San Francisco, the defective detective faces obsolescence as budget cuts force his layoff from cop consultancy. Goldberg is contracted to write at least two more Monk novels. The TV show itself returns on USA Network for its final season next month. See the website, www.leegoldberg.com

Famed director Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Midnight Meat Train which was a good flick, screw you Hollywood!) is signed on to direct an adaptation of Victor Gischler's novel Gun Monkeys, a hard-boiled mystery/action flick about Charlie a hitman whose targets turn out to be cops.. Ok, so maybe that title's a stretch. But the thing is, these are all television writers with solid track records and who could easily and happily fill up those hours of television NBC's handing over to Leno. We're sticking with writer-producers who specialize in drama, that could fill that 10 p.m. slot, and are not currently attached to any series (there's one exception), and a quick glance at IMDb doesn't indicate they have anything in development. There's no reason to believe they couldn't produce a compelling 13 hours of television (remember, we're going with the cable paradigm here -- 13 episodes and you're out.)

USA Network will air the eighth and final season of Monk during the summer of 2009. The beloved series' concluding season will include 16 episodes. With luck, he will continue to live on in Lee Goldberg’s delightful novels.
CBS’s Gary Unmarried was blessed with a full-season order while the network ordered three additional episodes of Worst Week.
NBC has given Medium an order for a total of 19 episodes, six more than previously ordered and less than a full season. With the recent cancellations, the peacock network may be short of inventory. A timeslot for the series’ return has not yet been selected although Monday’s at 10 p.m. following Heroes is most likely.

Lee Goldberg, a television writer and novelist whose credits include “Monk" and “Diagnosis Murder,” thinks Glen A. Larson is a genius, and not because the prolific television writer and producer gave us “Knight Rider” and “B.J. and the Bear,” says CNN. It was Larson who first used the faux curse word “frak” in the original “Battlestar Galactica.” The word was mostly overlooked back in the ‘70s series but is working its way into popular vocabulary as SciFi’s modern update winds down production. “All joking aside, say what you will about what you might call the lowbrow nature of many of his shows, he did something truly amazing and subversive, up there with what Steven Bochco gets credit for, with ‘frak,’ “ Goldberg said. There’s no question what the word stands for and it’s used gleefully, as many as 20 times in some episodes. The word is showing up everywhere—on T-shirts,...

The action film "Fast Track: No Limits" will shoot in Berlin through most of June. It stars U.S. and international actors and is helmed by Axel Sand ("Crazy Race 3"), according to the reports. The script is by Lee Goldberg ("Monk").
A ProSieben spokeswoman confirmed that the company is making the film, but staffers with more information could not be reached at press time.
The plot revolves around an attractive mechanic who is fighting to hold onto her auto shop. She is helped by various friends, all of whom share her passion for car racing.
ProSieben has been successful in the past few months exporting its TV movies to international audiences.
At this year's MIPTV in Cannes, two ProSieben films were sold to various European territories. And in April, Warner Bros. bought the German reality show format "Beat Your Host". But the company has never sold a film to the U.S.
