There are plenty of films dealing with dark themes in the illustrious filmography of Steven Spielberg. Prior to his success with Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, or Bridge of Spies, the Ohio-born filmmaker, 77, addressed a subject that was more personal to him.
Spielberg helmed the epic historical drama Schindler’s List in the same year (1993), when he broke box office records with Jurassic Park. Adapted from the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally, the former relates the terrifying true story of German industrialist Oskar Schindler, who employed thousands of Jews during World War II to keep them safe from the Nazi party’s persecution.
Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List
Starring Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley, the film was a box office hit that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards and gave Spielberg his first Best Director Oscar. However, it is also acknowledged for having introduced the Holocaust to a larger public.

“Choices, choices…,” says the narrator, a young seamstress, in this strange and striking debut from Freddy Macdonald. A neo-noir in the early Coens tradition, Sew Torn also features a bold tri-part structure in which the heroine, Barbara (Eve Connolly) — like Lola before her in Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run — gets three standalone chances to pursue a different destiny after stumbling on the bloody aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong on a quiet country road.
It begins with image of a reel of red cotton, a briefcase and a dead body. This is Barbara, who wonders what we’ll make of her story. Macdonald’s film then loops back to explain who Barbara got here, a tale of chance and coincidence that reshuffles its characters in a way that always surprises,...

Steven Spielberg’s Oskar Schindler almost looked vastly different.
The auteur’s Oscar-winning 1994 film “Schindler’s List” was led by Liam Neeson, who portrayed the real-life German businessman who saved more than 1,200 Jews from the Nazis during World War II. However, according to CAA co-founder Michael Ovitz, Mel Gibson was briefly considered for the title role.
“Mel Gibson’s name came up. He was interested. His agent put him forward,” Ovitz told The Hollywood Reporter in a 30th anniversary retrospective cover story. “But it wasn’t going to happen. Steven wanted a non-movie star for the part.”
At the time, pre-“Braveheart,” Gibson was coming off of three “Lethal Weapon” movies.
There were others considered — Neeson recounted in the oral history hearing Harrison Ford and Kevin Costner as well — though Spielberg was personally not naming names.
“A lot of people were interested in playing Schindler, and a lot of them were movie stars,...

"Let's go do what we do and blow some things up!" Lionsgate + Millennium have released one final kooky "Lullaby" trailer for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (otherwise known as Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard without the "the"), another action movie sequel arriving this summer. We've posted two other fun trailers before this one. This crazy trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman villain played by Antonio Banderas. Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson return, with a huge cast including Salma Hayek, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, Caroline Goodall, Rebecca Front, Gabriella Wright, Alice McMillan, Kristofer Kamiyasu, Tom Hopper, Blake Ritson, and featuring Richard E. Grant. This is the kind of amusing, ridiculous marketing that's actually going to get people back into theaters to watch this - hell yes, Lionsgate. Here's the final "Lullaby" trailer for...

"Now let's go do what we do - and blow some things up!" Lionsgate + Millennium Media have debuted the full-length official trailer for the summer's The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (also known as Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard without the "the"), a sequel to that action movie a few years ago. The wacky odd couple is still completing missions, but this time they get entangled with Sonia Kincaid, played by Salma Hayek. The trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman villain played by Antonio Banderas. Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Grant. This looks like fun, but only because it's formulaic action movie fun; even the jokes are obvious.

It’s arguable if 2017’s successful “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” film truly deserves its own sequel, even if it made money, but that said, the cast of Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek, in an action-comedy sound not so bad, right? Plus, there’s the supporting cast, Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, Caroline Goodall, Rebecca Front, Gabriella Wright, Alice McMillan, Kristofer Kamiyasu, Tom Hopper, Blake Ritson, with Richard E.

Ryan Reynolds is trying really hard not to kill anyone in the first trailer for “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.” In fact, he’s on a doctor-mandated psychological “sabbatical” from doing any work as a gun for hire.
That, of course, doesn’t stop him from getting into obscene fire fights and running for his life, this time while trying to protect not just Samuel L. Jackson’s hitman Darius Kincaid, but also Kincaid’s wife: the infamous, international con artist Sonia Kincaid, played by Salma Hayek.
“I promised my therapist no bodyguard. So that means no guns, no killing and no blood,” Reynolds says in the trailer as he attempts to subdue a bad guy.
“Are you using pepper spray?” Jackson responds before erupting into a laughing fit.

“Cold Courage,” produced by Lionsgate, is an adaptation of the series of novels by Finnish journalist Pekka Hiltunen. Simm, Caroline Goodall and Arsher Ali star in the series from writers David Joss Buckley and Brendan Foley.

Claes Bang and Olga Kurylenko in The Bay Of Silence
A mysterious disappearance. A terrible loss. A secret buried somewhere deep in the past. The Bay Of Silence offers plenty to intrigue fans of psychological thrillers. It stars Olga Kurylenko as troubled mother Rosalind and Claes Bang as her devoted husband, Will, and was adapted from Lisa St Aubin de Terán’s novel by actress Caroline Goodall, who gave me a call from Croatia, where she’s currently filming, to talk about the story and her admiration for director Paula van der Oest.
“When I was writing, I didn't have any director in mind, particularly,” she begins.” I was just keen to write the story, and see if I can get to the end. And it made sense. But Paula came on board in April 2018, just as we were starting to find finance. I had met her a year before in Los Angeles,...

Why did you choose to become an actor?
Performing was my freedom. I had a childhood stutter but it disappeared when I pretended to be someone else, so acting freed me from the stutterer’s crippling shyness. I desperately wanted to be an actress, but I had no clue how to go about it as a career as my family weren’t in the business, though they loved the theatre. So, I thought if I took every opportunity maybe I’d find my way. I joined the National Youth Theatre and then in my last year of school, I was spotted in a school play. I spent the summer...

The Hand That Mocks the Cradle: van der Oest Overwhelms in Overstuffed Trauma Drama
Some inherent problems with adapting complex or labyrinthine novels into film requires the excision of some source elements, at least if one is adhering to a traditional ninety-minute running time. If Claes Bang didn’t exist so suavely before our eyes, you’d say they don’t make movie stars like him any more: debonair, mature but with sparky wit, and possessed of a flexible accent that is at once evasive and distinctly European. Since breaking out aged 50 in Rubin Östlund’s “The Square,” he could have exclusively cashed in his raised profile on the kind of generically “foreign” villain parts and Europudding filler that tend to await such actors these days, yet he seems to be finding throwback vehicles to match his elegantly out-of-time stardom. First came the slippery, well-dressed art-scene noir “The Burnt Orange Heresy” and World War 2 counterfeiting drama “The Last Vermeer”; now, in a comparably neo-Hitchcockian vein, comes “The Bay of Silence,” in which his coolly compelling man-adrift charisma — backed by sturdy support from Olga Kurylenko and Brian Cox — keeps a splintering mystery together.

"I'm being followed." "You have to get a grip." Vertical Entertainment has released a new official US trailer for a mystery thriller titled The Bay of Silence, made by Dutch filmmaker Paula van der Oest adapting a dusty old novel. When Will discovers his wife and children have suddenly disappeared, his perfect world begins to unravel. Setting out on a frantic search to recover his family and finding them in a remote village in northern France. What happened to his family, why did they disappear? He believes his wife is innocent, only to discover the devastating truth behind her past links her to another unsolved crime. Claes Bang stars, with Olga Kurylenko, Brian Cox, Assaad Bouab, Alice Krige, and also Caroline Goodall (who also wrote the script). This trailer for this film is way more mysterious and creepy, with strange X-rays and other imagery. What the heck is going on here?...

The number of big-ticket dramas coming to the international market continues to increase as viewers embrace shows from all corners and consume them on a dizzying range of channels and platforms.
In a cluttered landscape, movie-inspired shows and book adaptations have built-in marketing appeal and bring a fan base, which is one way to cut through. There are multiple examples of both at MipTV,
from “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “To Catch a Thief,” to Canneseries opener “Vernon Subutex,” based on the hip French novel.
“The Walking Dead” producer Channing Powell envisages a dystopian future about a technology embedded inside our heads, while other series tackle the populist politics taking hold in many parts of the world. Immigration tales from the past, but with a modern-day relevance are also to the fore.

John Simm plays a rabble-rousing populist politician in “Cold Courage,” and Lionsgate has stepped up and taken international rights to the series.
Based on the series of novels by Pekka Hiltunen, the drama is billed as the biggest yet out of Finland and will bow on the Viaplay streaming service in Scandinavia. With a cast from all over Europe and a shoot spanning Belgium, Finland, Ireland, and the U.K., “Cold Courage” is international in scope and ambition.
That was part of the appeal for Simm, a familiar face on British TV, playing The Master in “Doctor Who” and starring in a host of other shows for British networks. “There was a point I was on BBC and ITV at the same time and that was a bit much,” he told Variety. “I thought it would be nice to step away from that for a little bit and do something I haven’t done,...

Created for a world in which our President and the Russian President weren’t BFFs, Hunter Killer is an absurd and occasionally fun military thriller full of grandstanding speeches and special effects that are just good enough. Gerard Butler stars as the stone-faced Joe Glass, the commanding officer of the USS Arkansas who is pulled out of retirement precisely because he’s an out of the box thinker who didn’t graduate from Annapolis (or so we’re told many times in the first 20 minutes). No sir, our man came up in the Navy doing every job on a submarine.
In the film’s opening moments on an American sub, the USS Tampa Bay is shot down in Russian waters leading to high alert in Washington. Under the command of Rear Admiral John Fisk (Common) and Nsa operative Jayne Norquist (Linda Cardellini), an elite Seal squad is sent into Russia...

You know those DVDs that sit in a giant Walmart bin, where, if you’re so inclined, you can spend half an hour sifting for a $2 treasure? The kinds of movies usually dumped unceremoniously into theaters in January, and maybe if you’re going stir crazy you take a chance and find yourself happily surprised? “Hunter Killer” is one of those.
It’s not going to win any Oscars, or give “Halloween” a run for its money. And what it’s doing taking up valuable cineplex space in the fall is anyone’s guess. But sometimes there’s a pleasure to be had in finding one’s low expectations met and even surpassed. And since we’re already damning this one with faint praise, let’s push it further still: As Cold War submarine thrillers starring Gerard Butler go, you could do a lot worse.

It’s no trick for even the most ham-fisted global action thriller to achieve a ripped-from-the-headlines “topicality.” Just throw in a terrorist from the right enemy nation, or an American president with the right haircut. So it’s a weird and musty Twilight Zone indeed that one enters to watch “Hunter Killer,” a grindingly ponderous and bombastic neo-Cold War submarine thriller — how ponderous is it? It stars Gerard Butler, and he’s the most lighthearted thing about it — that in every relevant detail seems three years, if not two decades, behind the times.
Consider its take on the U.S. president. The character, played by Caroline Goodall, is transparently modeled on Hillary Clinton. As a result, one watches her scenes utterly removed from the drama (I use the term loosely) and preoccupied, instead, with thoughts like, “Was this film really shot that long ago?” It was. "Ship ready! Solution ready! Weapon ready!" "Fire!" Lionsgate has debuted one final official trailer for the upcoming submarine thriller Hunter Killer, a modern day submarine movie about an intense American captain who has to rescue another American sub in distress. Gerard Butler stars as Captain Joe Glass, and the movie's full ensemble cast includes Gary Oldman, Common, Linda Cardellini, Caroline Goodall, Michael Nyqvist, Ryan McPartlin, and Toby Stephens. The main plot involves the captain discovering a secret Russian coup, making this the most important mission of his life in order to maintain world order. This is a short trailer, but it's still packed with action - there's snipers, and missile trucks, and torpedoes, and military boats galore. This is probably going to be bad, but maybe so bad it's good? Only way to find out. Here's the final Us trailer (+ new poster) for Donovan Marsh's Hunter Killer, direct from...

"All you have to do is tell me what it's worth to you." Universal has released a new trailer for the upcoming 25th anniversary re-release of Steven Spielberg's iconic WWII B&W classic Schindler's List, which won seven Oscars in 1994. The true story set during the Holocaust is about a German man who operates a factory in Nazi-occupied Krakow, Poland named Oskar Schindler, played by Liam Neeson. He gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis, helping over 1,200 of them to escape to safety. The cast also includes Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Caroline Goodall, Jonathan Sagalle, Embeth Davidtz, Malgoscha Gebel, and Shmulik Levy, among many others. This film is highly regarded as one of the best WWII films ever made. If you've never seen it, it's really a must watch film, important for each and every cinephile to experience at some point. No better time than now.

Tribeca Film Festival’s retrospective screening of “Schindler’s List” marked the first time the cast had seen the acclaimed movie in 25 years.
“I feel so blessed I had the opportunity to tell this story,” said Steven Spielberg, who won Oscars for best directing and best picture for “Schindler’s List” in 1993. “Twenty-five years later, I sat through the whole film, which I hadn’t done in so long, and I was just proud.”
Spielberg and cast members Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Embeth Davidtz, and Caroline Goodall were greeted after the screening with a standing ovation at the Beacon Theater in New York.
During the panel, Spielberg set the record straight on the origins of “Schindler’s List”: Is it true Martin Scorsese could have directed it? “Yes, that’s true.” Is it true Mel Gibson could have been cast in the lead? “That’s not true.”

But it also brimmed with unchecked emotion from director Steven Spielberg and four of his cast members, including Liam Neeson and Ben Kingsley, who all watched the film with a theatrical audience for the first time in nearly 25 years.
Moments after the lights came up after the screening and a long ovation from the Beacon Theatre crowd had subsided, Spielberg said he last saw the film with a theatrical audience in 1993, when it had a series of European premieres. “There were so many moments that washed over me,” he said, his voice charged with emotion.
