If it's a teen drama you're after, complete with chisled cheek bones, scary fight scenes, and an inter-stellar romance, this may be the film for you. I Am Number Four (2011) features model-turned-actor Alex Pettyfur as a 15-year old alien, John Smith, who's trying to escape the enemy that destroyed his home planet of Lorien. Smith is sent to Earth as a child along with eight others (collectively called the Garde), who are now being hunted and systematically eliminated by the invaders and destroyers of Lorien -- the Mogadorians. Three of his predecessors have been killed, and John is Number Four. The film launches into John's story as a pre-curser to what could pan out to be a long-term franchise. It's based on the first in a series of books by Pitticus Lore that topped the children's chapter of the New York Times Best Seller List last year. As Sci-fi adventures go,...

A young boy from another world is raised on in the mid-west to use his special abilities for the good of all. He struggles to fit in at high school, constantly hiding his true nature under the watchful eye of his mentor. After Smallville, one would have thought the writing team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar would have been comfortable with the subject matter much as Marti Noxon could have used her experiences from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to add some snark and fun to the high school life. Instead, the three combined to pen a middling, ineffective script adaptation of I Am Number Four. The movie, made for just under $60 million earned barely $90 million worldwide and extinguished much hope of a film series to follow the projected six book franchise. Now out from Walt Disney Home Entertainment, the movie is so incredibly devoid of personality and charm, it...

DJ Caruso’s latest teen hero epic, I Am Number Four, is a very solid and entertaining film. Practically executed and well acted it succeeds in ushering a brand new fantasy/reality blended sci-fi series. Character driven, the action doesn’t cover up any of the interesting plot points, focusing much of the story on a simple teenage stranger who finds love in the midst of his topsy, turvy life on the run.
I was surprised at how much I liked this film, sure it has been done before in many different ways but films like this don’t work unless the realism parts are executed effectively and there is an immediate interest in the characters. I love how identifiable characters are in the film. First off, John Smith [Number Four], an alien on the run on Earth, who must lay low in the world of high school, where we all know is easier said then done.
