Happy Friday, dear readers! One of our annual traditions here at Daily Dead is that, once a year, we take a few weeks to celebrate a notable time period in the horror genre. And since 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of all the great classics that were released during 1981, we thought it only made sense to pay tribute to the films of that year with our Class of 1981 series.
Starting on Monday, August 16th, we will be kicking off our two-week celebration of the killer horror and memorable sci-fi movies that were released throughout 1981. And if you feel like celebrating right alongside us, I’ve gone ahead and put together this handy list of where you can stream an assortment of ‘81 classics on a variety of platforms (both subscription-based and free).
And remember, be sure to check back here every day on Daily Dead for all kinds of 1981-related fun, as...

An American Werewolf in London is another one of those moves that I enjoy watching every year around Halloween. It has everything that makes for a great classic horror movie. The movie was incredibly bloody, violent, and scary, but one of the things that I liked about it most was the humor. It made me laugh, and that was all thanks to the character Jack Goodman, who was a rotting corpse with an upbeat and cheerful attitude. He's actually one of my favorite characters ever in a horror movie. I came across a lot of fun behind the scenes information about the film, and maybe there's something here that you've never heard of before. So without further ado, here are 15 fun facts about An American Werewolf in London.

An American Werewolf In London (1981)
Written and directed by John Landis
Starring: David Naughton (David Kessler), Griffin Dunne (Jack Goodman), Jenny Agutter (Nurse Alex Price), Don McKillop (Inspt. Villiers) and Paul Kember (Sgt. McManus)
I will be honest with all of you; I am not a huge fan of ‘The Howling’. I know, I know. One of the most revered werewolf films ever made with a huge base of fans and critics alike. By all accounts I should be among them, but there is just something about it I do not gel with. It’s not a badly made film and it boasts some really incredible visual effects (you don’t see a natural lady garden in this day and age, either) and Dee Wallace was very likeable in the lead role, but as a whole, I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it wasn’t precisely to my tastes,...

One of the few things that really brings me joy watching The Walking Dead is seeing how the FX team works zombie cameos into the show. Last month, we saw none other than Jack Goodman's corpse from An American Werewolf in London lurch across the screen. Tonight? We saw a zombie makeup inspired by a very familiar face from George A. Romero's Day of the Dead...

"The Walking Dead" is not a show to thrive on celebrity guests. Aside from Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and F/X god Greg Nicotero (who works on the show anyway), there have been no celebrity zombie appearances. But there have been plenty of zombie tributes.
Dynamo writer John Squires recently compiled a list of zombie "cameos" from "The Walking Dead." The list consists of zombies on the show designed to look like (in)famous zombies from films past, and we'll review them here.
If you've noticed any that may been have missed, please feel free to add them in the comments section below.
Season 1, Episode 4 - Day of the Dead - Doctor Tongue
Dr. Tongue from Day of the Dead was the first zombie seen in the film, which was Greg Nicotero's first feature. He worked as an assistant to Tom Savini, and Dr. Tongue was just...

I think it’s pretty safe to say that The Walking Dead wouldn’t be The Walking Dead without Greg Nicotero, a guy that was born and bred to bring the zombies from Robert Kirkman’s comic series to life on the small screen. Nicotero began his career as a special makeup effects artist, cutting his proverbial teeth on the sets of films like Day of the Dead and Evil Dead 2, and not only is he in charge of the zombie makeup on The Walking Dead, but he’s also become an executive producer and even occasional director of the show.
Nicotero has been given a lot of freedom when it comes to designing the walkers that Rick and the gang are perpetually on the run from, and he’s had a whole lot of fun with that freedom over the years. It’s not uncommon for him to throw...

This week’s sidekick is An American Werewolf in London's Jack, dedicated friend to recently-bitten, self-hating werewolf David. Let’s make that dead-icated. Poor Jack doesn’t make it too long into the story but he comes back with a vengeance, and is probably the only sidekick in history to try to convince the lead character he’s better off dead.
Written and directed by John Landis, with makeup by Rick Baker, An American Werewolf in London is the perfect blend of horror and humor.
Film: An American Werewolf in London
Year: 1981
Sidekick: Jack Goodman (Griffin Dunne)
Why this Sidekick Is Better Than the Lead: Jack is great comic relief in the film. He’s always ready with a one-liner, and despite the fact that he’s clearly dead as evidenced by his ever-decaying exterior, he tends to be the voice of reason.
Moment of Glory: Jack’s first...

[In the returning daily October series "Oscar Horrors" we look at those rare beasts. Film contributions in the horror genre that went on to Oscar nominations. Here's new contributor Peter Swanson...]
Here Lies ... An American Werewolf in London, which won the 1981 Academy Award for Best Makeup, the first year that award was given in regular competition.
Peter from Armchair Audience here. A quick story first. As a film-obsessive I've tried hard to not be that guy (you know the one) who insists his/her friends watch all their favorite movies. However, a few years ago and in a mildly intoxicated state, I forced my wife and dinner guest to sit through An American Werewolf in London, accompanied by my own personal commentary track. When werewolf-bitten David Kessler (David Naughton) first turns into a hairy beast I (allegedly) repeated the phrase,"Best transformation scene ever," about twenty times. That phrase has come to haunt me through the years--my wife likes to spring it on me any time I suggest watching a movie to friends.
Here's the thing: It is the best transformation scene ever.

Get ready to howl at the moon again. John Landis. classic film is one that comes up every time there is a list of the best werewolf movies ever made. The film is a delicious mix of gore and comedy that also features some great special effects from the masterful Rick Baker. It.s nice to see some wet work as we.ve been inundated with CGI. David Kessler (David Naughton) and Jack Goodman (Griffin Dunne) are two American college students backpacking across the Yorkshire moors. The duo is attacked by a beast, after being warned to stay off the moors by the sinister villagers. Jack is killed. David is mauled and is taken to a London hospital. He wakes up...

Leno tussle isn't the first for Whdh owner
NBC is adamant that it will be victorious in the surprise standoff with a rebelling Boston station that is refusing to air Jay Leno's primetime talk show in the fall.
"Jay Leno fans will not be disappointed," NBC TV Network president John Eck said. "Make no mistake. The new Leno show will air at 10 p.m. weeknights in the Boston market on NBC."
Whdh's Thursday announcement that it plans to replace Leno's 10 p.m. show with a local newscast raised the question over how much control affiliate stations have over primetime.
Whdh owner Ed Ansin was quoted as saying his station can opt not to air NBC's new show because it "will be very adverse to our finances." But Jack Goodman, former general counsel for the National Association of Broadcasters, sided with NBC, which says a station can't permanently drop network programming.
